There is plenty to do in the aloha state. This month, Aloha State Daily brings you some of the community’s free entertainment options, including access to local museums and wine tasting.
Hokulea. Daily. The traditional voyaging canoe, Hokulea, will visit Oahu over the next few weeks with stops in Puuloa, or Pearl Harbor, (Jan. 18-24), Ko Olina and Pokai Bay (Jan. 29- Feb. 8), Maunalua Bay and Koko Marina in Hawaii Kai (Feb. 9-14). Details: hokulea.com/pae-aina-statewide-sail.
Hula. Wednesdays. Watch dancers take the stage in a free hula show starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Kuhio Beach Hula Mound across from the Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Hotel. Details: waikikibid.org/events.
Fire dancers. Wednesdays and Sundays. Fire dancers practice from sunset until 9 p.m. on Wednesdays at the Waikiki War Memorial Natatorium near Kaimana Beach and the Waikiki Aquarium. Capitol Modern. First Fridays. This museum’s exhibits, events and activities are “always free!” according to its website. Open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, except Sundays. The monthly First Friday event includes family friendly music and galleries and the sculpture garden are open to the public. Details: capitolmodern.org.
Art receptions. First Fridays. The Downtown Art Center and several other art organizations in the Chinatown Arts District host art receptions and special events. Join the art walk to see showcases featuring the local creative community. Details: downtownarthi.org/events.
Shangri La. First Saturdays. Not quite free but close! For $5, kamaaina, students and active duty military can visit the Shangri La and check out its collection of art, which was put together by philanthropist Doris Duke and includes about 4,500 objects of art from Spain, Morocco, Egypt, Syria, Iran, Central Asia, India and parts of Southeast Asia, according to its website. Live music. First Sundays. Enjoy live music hosted by local bands through a series from the Downtown Art Center. Wine and beer are available at a donation bar. Details: downtownarthi.org/events.
Wine tasting. First Sundays. Enjoy live music and free wine tasting at Kalapawai Café and Deli in Waimanalo. Details: instagram.com/kalapawai_hawaii.
Iolani Palace. Second Sundays. Walk in the steps of Hawaii’s last reigning monarchs. Hosted by the Hawaiian Native Corporation, Kamaaina Sunday offers activities and entertainment and free admission to the palace. It’s a chance for guests to “immerse themselves in Hawaiian culture, taste ono food, support local vendors, enjoy lively entertainment and more,” according to the palace’s website. Pearl Harbor Historic Sites. The Battleship Missouri Memorial, Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum and Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum offer free admission to service members on the anniversary of each military branch’s birthday.
