With the start of the new year (and New Year’s resolutions), everyone’s looking to save money and get the most bang for their buck. This series where show you where you can save while still savoring a good meal.

When was the last time you had a $3 hand roll? It sounds ridiculously cheap, but these are the kinds of deals you can find every day from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Kakaako-based Pitch Sports Bar.

Pitch Sports Bar’s happy hour started about two years ago, according to the restaurant’s managing partner/sushi chef Jon Tamashiro. The eatery is known for its hot bar-type eats like salt and vinegar pork rinds, truffle gyoza and chimichurri pork chops, but it has a full sushi counter. The happy hour menu can be enjoyed from anywhere in the restaurant, according to Tamashiro.

“For the hand rolls, we are offering quality ingredients at reasonable prices,” Tamashiro says.

During happy hour, you can find select hand rolls — including imitation crab salad, garlic ahi, scallop mayo, and spicy tuna — for $3 each, which is a steal. During regular hours, these hand rolls cost $5 each.

The $5 hand roll selection (regular price $8) includes ebi chili, salmon ikura, snow crab, spider (softshell crab with sweet onions and Japanese mayo), tuna truffle and unagi. Meanwhile, the $7 hand roll category features more luxe options like amaebi, torotaku (fatty bluefin tuna with takuan and shiso), negitoro, rainbow (King salmon, bigeye tuna and hamachi with shiso), lobster with butter garlic mayo, and U&I. The latter features Hokkaido sea urchin and salmon roe with shiso.

The garlic ahi, salmon ikura, and U&I are the most popular hand rolls, according to Tamashiro.

When it comes to hot foods, the barbecue brisket ($9) and cheese curds with marinara ($9) are the most popular, according to Tamashiro. The latter features golden-brown, breaded cheese curds served with the sports bar’s house marinara sauce.

This year, customers can look forward to a new tier of hand rolls and a menu revamp, according to Tamashiro.

“We also now offer catering and mobile sushi,” he says.
