7 ways to celebrate Lunar New Year in Waikīkī

Lion dances, calligraphy and stars are just some of the attractions for celebrations for the Year of the Snake! International Market Place and Royal Hawaiian Center are some of the groups hosting celebrations.

The Year of the Snake starts Jan. 29. Events are taking place throughout the state, including in Waikīkī and Chinatown. Aloha State Daily compiled a quick list of some of the activities happening in Waikīkī in the next few weeks.

Jan. 25.

Lion Dance. 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. International Market Place. Lion dance performances will take place throughout Levels 1, 2 and 3 with an educational presentation at Queen’s Court.

Calligraphy. 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. International Market Place. Chinese calligraphers will be at Mauka Court.

Stargazers of Hawaii. 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. International Market Place. See planets such as Saturn and Jupiter, along with stars, through a large telescope at the Grand Lanai. 

Jan. 29.

Lion Dance. 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Royal Hawaiian Center. The Lung Kong Physical Culture Club will host a lion dance, which starts at 5 p.m. at The Royal Grove and continues to stores and restaurants throughout the center.

Feb. 1

Lion Dance. 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Outrigger Waikīkī Beach Resort. Catch lion dance performances by  Sing Yung Dragon and Lion Dance Association.

Feb. 8

Acrobatic Lion Dance. 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Royal Hawaiian Center. Wah Ngai Lion Dance Association will do an acrobatic lion dance at The Royal Grove.

Feb. 9

Chinese Calligraphy by Ina Chang. 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Royal Hawaiian Center. Ina Chang demonstrates calligraphy at The Royal Grove.
