March for Babies is the largest fundraiser for March of Dimes Hawaiʻi, which aims to improve the health of babies and mothers.

The charity walk on Saturday, April 19, will kick-off at 8:30 a.m at Kakaʻako Waterfront Park in Honolulu.

More than 700 registrants are expected to attend, including families, government officials, businesses and other members of the community. Participants can plan to walk 1.25 miles, score refreshments, snacks and giveaways from sponsors and vendors, as well as enjoy live entertainment and kid activities like an Easter egg hunt. 

The organization’s overall goal this year is to raise $280,000, up from $265,000 the year prior – its highest goal ever, according to organizers. Donations help support its prenatal programs, training for Neonatal Intensive Care Unit families and hospital staff, bereavement support, supplies and more.

“This is my fourth March for Babies event and it’s my mission to grow it every year,” said March of Dimes Hawaiʻi Executive Director Candice Fajardo. “Thanks to the generous support from the community,  we can continue to provide resources and educational services for our NICU families across the Islands.”

This event also features an ambassador family each year. Meet the Kumasakis: “After giving birth to premature twins, they lost one son shortly after, and their other son remained in the NICU and then PICU for 554 days. MOD serves hundreds of local families through Kapiʻolani Medical Center’s NICU Family Support program.”

Chick-fil-A Ala Moana owner/operator Kurt Millne, and wife Priscilla, will also be honored for their continued support of March for Babies, Fajardo told Aloha State Daily.

Sponsors for March for Babies 2025 include Hawaiʻi Medical Service Association, United Healthcare Community Plan, AlohaCare, Coca-Cola Hawaiʻi, Steve & Marilyn Katzman Foundation, among other organizations.

Fajardo took the helm of the nonprofit in 2021. She oversees two staff members and said this year, she is focused on expanding her team and providing service to the Neighbor Islands. 

In 2024, March of Dimes Hawaiʻi launched the Supportive Pregnancy Care program at Malama Ke Ola, which provides five months of prenatal education classes. “We had six moms graduate and we’re now in the second cohort," Fajardo said.

More than 750 NICU families were supported by the nonprofit last year, she said, adding that it is in need of more NICU care kits, essentially care packages containing bottles, pumps, diapers, etc. 

“My ʻwhyʻ and reason why I love working at the March of Dimes is being able to fight for the health of all moms and babies to ensure that every family will have healthy babies,” she said.

 a couple weeks back. Since then, people have been sharing their own stories on

 A few years ago, I wanted to try to hike up to the cave, but some point partway up the trail I got hit with a strong feeling I shouldn’t be there, though I didn’t know exactly why. I just knew that there was strong mana and I felt it. Listened to my gut and only recently learned of this story! I was always told to listen to the ‘aīna and it will tell you what you need to know. Haven’t tried to go back since.

Mākua right? My daughter was drawn to the cave... she kept on about going to it so I finally took her there. I took picture facing in and standing at the back facing out. Then I could see all the elementals in the cave and then the other realm. This was all day time too. My daugh felt comfortable there.🤷‍♀️

 My dad is a Makaha boy he always called it Makua cave and always talked about the menehune in there and a story about a Boy Scout troop. The cave is really chicken skin we aren’t allowed to go in there

 Yes many times going there felt like i was being watched. I pūle before going inside and ask for permission with all respect.🙏🏾🤙🏾

 My son can’t enter the cave… he feels something wrong there.

 The cave has this weird physical feeling, almost like if you were standing in a room of magnets pulling on the iron in your blood. Ended up there unintentionally before I realized it was 

 cave. I left offerings for the ancestors with my daughters then decided to move it along.

 had a crazy experience in that cave.. walk in the cave really late at night and started to hear wat sounded like an “old Hawaiian man” groaning like he was in pain or something.. after we heard it the first time we instantly got frozen and silent.. n then it got louder n the sounds moved towards us spooking us out of our minds and running out of the cave.. upon getting back into the truck frantically, we didn’t take notice our truck had bin turned around a full 180 degrees and was facing the cave wen we drove off so quickly. It was only wen we were passing waikomo beach is wen we noticed our truck was facing the opposite direction wen we go back in the truck than wen we first parked.. we parked with the truck facing the beach…. Never went back ever since.

 My Kane’s tutu wahine was born with a sharks mouth on the back of her neck as well. We are truly blessed to still have our connect to our ancients.

 I remember when I was about 10-11 years old my aunty took us to makaha beach to just listened to the waves but of course the gates were closed it was around midnight and when we left to go home we just was coming up to Makua cave and from a distance we seen a haole couple walking out of the cave and the head lights of they’re car was shining into the cave my aunty told my uncle who was driving to pull over to see if they were ok when we pulled over the couple looked like they were talking to each other the guys back was facing us and the women was facing towards us my aunty asked if they were ok but they didn’t say anything the man turned to look at us but he had a blank look she asked again still no word but the man started walking towards the van (our vehicle) and said nothing just a blank look on his face and as he got closer my aunty could sense something wasn’t right so we immediately took off it gives me chicken skin till this day.

 opened last December, crowds were waiting outside the restaurant for its popular soup dumplings. Now that the craze has died down a bit, the eatery just launched ‘sum’ thing new — dim sum service.

Dim sum is now served daily from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The regular lunch menu, which includes soup dumplings, starts at 11:30 a.m.

Once you’re seated at your table, scan the QR code to see the dim sum menu.

The dim sim selection is more limited, compared to that at other restaurants, but there’s still something for everyone. Options include crispy fried shrimp wontons ($7.99), har gow ($6.50), siu mai ($6.50), shrimp and chive dumplings ($6.50), seafood bean curd rolls ($6.50) and lo mai gai ($6.50). The latter features steamed glutinous rice with chicken.

Dim sum is made to order, so there might be a short wait, depending on the time of your visit. The pork hash ($6.50) and shrimp dumplings ($6.50) are my go-to orders, and these don’t disappoint — each piece was fresh and succulent, boasting lots of flavor. The crispy fried shrimp wontons come with a creamy mayo dipping sauce.

Pro tip: If you go for an early lunch around 11 a.m., you’ll get the best of both worlds and can order dim sum and those soup dumplings from the lunch menu once 11:30 a.m. hits.

At this time last year, Adrien Roure was playing one match a week in his native France.   

While the season itself would last anywhere from five to six months, only one day a week would he and his teammates go through the rigors of a game day. Every other day was dedicated to sharpening their skills in practice.   

Halfway through his freshman year at the University of Hawai‘i, Roure admits his new routine has been a grind. The Rainbow Warriors are currently 17-1 overall, having recently swept Lindenwood last week in a two-match series that took place on Wednesday and Friday.   

The Rainbow Warriors had to dig deep to defeat the Lions on Friday night in a four-set match that was almost pushed to five. By the end of the series, the 'Bows completed a stretch of four matches over the course of a week. Prior to that sequence, UH also played four matches in three days in North Carolina from Feb. 20-22.   

“That’s a really different approach of the game,” Roure said in comparing the season in France to collegiate men’s volleyball. "You have like, five days off between games. You can really work and rest. Here, you go on the plane, go somewhere, go back, play. So mentally, you have less time to think about the games, so sometimes you can get into the trap of doing mistakes, like the same mistakes in a row, because you can't really get out of games and put your heads up."

The grind continues this week for the 'Bows, and it doesn't get easier. All 11 matches remaining on the regular season schedule are against ranked opponents, beginning with this week's Outrigger Invitational from Thursday to Saturday at the Stan Sheriff Center. 

The tournament is considered by some to be the premier multi-team event in collegiate men’s volleyball. The 2025 field consists of No. 3 Hawai‘i, No. 5 USC, No. 12 Ball State and No. 19 Penn State. The 'Bows will play Ball State on Thursday, Penn State on Friday and USC on Saturday. First serve for all three matches is set for 7 p.m. 

"I don't think it's hyperbole that it's the premier event in men's collegiate volleyball, and has been," UH head coach Charlie Wade said. "This is the 29th iteration of it. We're fortunate in most years to have had really strong fields, and this is certainly no exception to that. Even with Penn State having a little down year on the their win-loss record (5-10), it's still Penn State. They still have really good players, and they're going to be a really good team, and they're a brand, right? They're a nationally known brand that everybody recognizes, not only in volleyball, but all of college athletics.

"They're really good. Ball State's obviously a top team that we've seen several times. And SC is top five this week. It'll be a battle every night for three nights in a row. It's going to be a challenge, for sure."

Echoing Roure's sentiments on the physical demands of a season was fellow freshman 

"I've never played that many games in a row or like in that short of a period, because my previous years the season starts around September and ends around April. It's a pretty long period. You have a lot of breaks, like probably a game every week," said Titriyski, who was recently named Big West Freshman of the Week for the fourth time. "But I think we're pretty energetic. We have really good stuff here, the athletic trainer helps us a lot. He is here every day for us. ... We were actually talking about this the other day because it's already midseason and we need to take care of our bodies, because it's a lot of games. So it is not easy, for sure, but I don't think it's that hard, because, we're 18, 19 years old. We can take care of it."

Added Wade: "They're young guys. I think they'll respond pretty well. But this time of year, I don't think anybody's really at 100% and three matches in three days is a challenge. So, you get to learn a lot about yourself, a lot about your team on a weekend like this."
