Kumu Kahua Theatre is hosting a free limited-space workshop for first-time playwrights on Saturday, May 3, at Kualoa-Heʻeia Ecumenical Youth Project in Kāneʻohe. Registration is open to writers from Kāneʻohe to Kahuku through April 17. After that, the intensive opens to anyone, space permitting.
The one-day workshop offers up to 20 writers a chance to work with Hawaiʻi based-theatre artists Daniel A. Kelin II and Harry Wong III. They will teach the basics of structure and character development, as well as how to write dialogue.
Kelin is a playwright and the director of drama education at Honolulu Theatre for Youth. He has written a number of plays and been awarded Fulbright fellowships to work in India. Kelin also worked on the film “After the Endling,”which was featured in eight international film festivals and aired by PBS and Hawaiian Airlines, according to Kumu Kahua Theatre’s website.
Wong is Kumu Kahua Theatre’s artistic director. He has directed more than 100 plays, including more than 50 at Kumu Kahua Theatre. Wong is also a cofounder of the Hawaiʻi Shakespeare Festival.
Kumu Kahua Theatre produces plays about life in Hawaiʻi, written by Hawaiʻi playwrights, for a Hawaiʻi audience.
This entry-level intensive is part of Kumu Kahua’s Supporting Theatre Arts Guidance and Education Series, which provides free or low cost learning opportunities for theatre arts creatives at different levels of experience.
The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Kualoa-Heʻeia Ecumenical Youth Project in Kāneʻohe. To register, go here or call (808) 536-4441.
