Everyone’s looking to save money and get the most bang for their buck. This series will show you where you can save while still savoring a good meal.

Basalt Waikīkī’s prix fixe meal ($55) has been around since the beginning of 2020. The three-course meal is a deal — and I was reminded of such during a recent visit to try some of the eatery’s newer dishes. The prix fixe menu is available nightly during dinner.

The prix fixe menu starts with your choice of the soup of the day or Waipoli mixed greens with radish, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, shaved carrots and coconut balsamic dressing.

Pozole was the featured soup during our visit; it featured a hearty, flavorful broth with a slight spice.

While it’s not part of the prix fixe menu, Basalt’s Caesar salad ($15) is a worthy option if you’re looking for an appetizer to share. It features Kula baby romaine, parmesan, Caesar dressing and Basalt’s charcoal croutons. The spongy charcoal croutons take this refreshing salad to the next level.

For the second course, choose between miso black cod with steamed white rice, sauteed local greens and dashi nage, or a 10-ounce Hawaiian salt and herb-crusted prime rib served with garlic mashed potatoes, a vegetable medley, creamed horseradish and au jus.

The prime rib is one of the eatery’s most popular dishes, and it’s a good deal if you’re getting it as part of the prix fixe meal. The included meat option has alternated between the New York steak and the prime rib over the years.

For dessert, choose between a crustless, “burnt” basque cheesecake served with blueberry-chambord sauce or a chocolate temptation cake. The latter features layers of chocolate cake filled with hazelnut and chocolate cream and hazelnut crunch, and topped with a chocolate glaze and raspberry sauce.

While chocolate confections are usually my dessert of choice, I can never turn down the eatery’s basque cheesecake. Basque cheesecake is characterized by its creamy interior and caramelized, slightly burned exterior. Even if you’re full, it’ll be hard to stop eating after just one bite.
