Interisland shipping is about to get more expensive after the Hawai‘i Public Utilities Commission approved new customer rates for Young Brothers LLC.

The PUC unanimously approved on Monday a 25.75% rate increase for Young Brothers in an effort to stabilize the freight company’s “deteriorating financial condition.”

Effective Jan. 1, the cost of shipping a container between islands will increase by 20%, unless the container is shipped to or from Hilo, in which case costs will increase by 35%.

Similarly, the cost of shipping a car will increase by 30%, the rate for a pallet of dry cargo will increase by 30% and the rate for refrigerated freight will increase by 40%.

 the current average rate to ship a mid-sized car between islands at about $300, but 

 in its proposal for the rate increase that cost will increase by roughly $82-92. Meanwhile, the average cost to ship a 20-foot container between non-Hilo ports is about $700, but will increase by $136.

“These new rates address our most immediate financial solvency risk by better aligning customer rates with the costs to provide and maintain reliable service across every island,” said Young Brothers Interim President Frank Almaraz in a statement Monday.

In exchange, Young Brothers estimates a $26 million increase in revenue, which will help make up for rising costs since the last rate increase more than five years ago.

According to a statement by Young Brothers, the company’s operating costs have increased by 44% since 2020 even as cargo volume has declined by about 14%. In fact, the company has not been profitable since August 2024, and the company anticipates losses in 2025 of more than $24 million.

Even with the rate adjustment, Young Brothers expects to incur a loss of at least $6 million next year.

At the same time, Young Brothers has reinvested more than $120 million into its own infrastructure between 2020 and 2024, including nearly $50 million for two new barges, according to the company.

“[Young Brothers’] financial condition has continued to worsen to the point where it now operates at a net loss, is in arrears with its vendors, and is in a state of default with its lenders,” read a statement by the PUC. That statement added that Young Brothers has repeatedly made requests to the commission for various rate increases, debt financing and other measures to stabilize its condition since 2019.

But despite the PUC’s “serious concerns” about Young Brothers’ financial condition, the commission approved the rate increase in order to avoid disruptions to the state’s interisland shipping. As Young Brothers is the only regulated water carrier for property in the state, interisland shipping cannot function without the company.

Therefore, the PUC announced this latest rate increase alongside an array of measures to monitor Young Brothers’ future operations. For example, the PUC will appoint an overseer to monitor the company’s performance, and will require Young Brothers to provide regular updates on its business plan; the first such business plan update is due by Jan. 31, with further reports due monthly and quarterly.

The company is also prohibited from filing any requests for further rate increases for at least two years, and even after two years, those requests must be backed up by demonstrated improvements to the company’s operations. Young Brothers must also develop a plan to pay outstanding wharfage fees, review its collective bargaining agreements and more.

However, the PUC did not approve a Water Carrier Inflationary Cost Index (WICI), which would allow for smaller, incremental rate changes each year based on inflation. A Young Brothers statement described the WICI as a favorable alternative to abrupt, large rate fluctuations after years without any changes.

“Our customers, businesses, and community organizations have made clear that more predictable adjustments would help them plan for shipping costs,” Almaraz said in a statement. “WICI was designed to modernize the current regulatory framework by ensuring that customer rates keep better pace with the real-world cost of providing service.”

Meanwhile, the PUC, skeptical of the tool, determined that it would have “served to increase rates, offset inefficiencies and mask shortcomings in [Young Brothers’] operations, to the detriment of customers.”

While the new rates take effect in January, they are not additive to a 18.1% temporary rate increase the PUC approved earlier this year. That increase sunsets on Dec. 31.

Sales have recently started for a new residential community coming to Kaka‘ako.

Kahuina — which will have two residential towers dubbed Lamakū and Māmalu — will offer a total of 737 for-sale homes, including a mix of market-rate and affordable units.

The project, bordered by Auahi, Coral, Cooke and Pohukaina streets, is being developed by Kaka‘ako Block C LLC, an affiliate of Stanford Carr Development.

Sales began Oct. 30 for the market-priced residences in its Lamakū tower and are reserved exclusively for kama‘āina for the first 30 days, a recent announcement from the developer noted. Prices for these units begin around $690,000 for one bedroom, $910,000 for two bedrooms and just under $1.2 million for three-bedroom units. 

 will be a 43-story, all glass residential tower, offering a mix of one-, two and three-bed units with lanais in every home, the project website notes.

 is a 32-story tower that also offers one-, two- and three-bedroom units.

 for these Hawai‘i Housing Finance & Development Corp. residences are anticipated to run from the $600,000s for one-bedroom units to $800,000 for three-bed units, but prices can vary based on floor plan, square footage, floor level and other factors.

Additionally, the site says that amenities at Kahuina include a recreation deck with a pool, spa, fitness center, recreation room, barbecue areas, community kitchen, outdoor showers, a children’s play area and storage.

“Kahuina’ means ‘crossroads’ in Hawaiian and represents the coming together of the past and the future,” Stanford Carr, president of President of Stanford Carr Development LLC, said in the announcement. “This innovative new residential community is designed to provide more housing options specifically for kama‘āina to enjoy the comfort and convenience of living in town together with other local families.”

According to the announcement, the name Lamakū means enlightenment, while Māmalu is a nod to Princess 

The towers will be constructed in Our Kaka‘ako, Kamehameha Schools’ mixed-use community.

 Master Plan was approved by the Hawai‘i Community Development Authority in 2009. The Our Kaka‘ako Master Plan encompasses 29 acres across nine city blocks of KS land in the neighborhood, its 

The redevelopment of Our Kaka‘ako’s first four blocks have already been completed as part of Increment I. That includes Keauhou Place and Keauhou Lane on Block A; The Flats at Pu‘unui and 400 Keawe on Block B; The Collection on Block E and SALT at Our Kaka‘ako on Block F.

Development partners have been chosen for four of the five remaining blocks in Increment II, KS notes.

When Hawaiʻi committed in 2014 to becoming 100% renewable by 2045, it signaled a new era of sustainability.

For Kanaka ʻŌiwi innovator Olin Lagon, then a member of the Hawaiʻi Clean Energy Initiative Steering Committee that pushed for the goal, it also revealed a deeper challenge: ensuring that the benefits of clean energy reached everyone, not just those who could afford it.

Lagon realized that underserved communities and renters would face major financial challenges.

“Upwards of 75% of Native Hawaiian families live under the ALICE poverty threshold, which is absolutely criminal. And when I’m talking about the underserved, I’m talking about our Hawaiian community,” said Lagon. ALICE stands for “Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed.”

Two years later, Lagon and his business partner, Forest Frizzell, founded Shifted Energy in his garage to enable widespread access to energy solutions. The company combines smart hardware and software to help utilities balance the grid using everyday devices like water heaters. Powered by advanced machine learning, the system automatically shifts energy use to lower-cost times and stabilizes circuits without users ever noticing a change.

The water heater was just the first of many devices Lagon and Frizzell realized they could manage and control.

“In Hawaiʻi, the water heater is the number one user of energy in most homes,” said Lagon, who explained that many underserved homeowners have cheaply made and inefficient electric resistance water heaters. Shifted Energy sought out to target lowering cost and ensuring quality products.

It took years of tinkering, testing and perfecting. Between pitching to investors and expanding the company, Shifted Energy remained focused on helping those who needed it most. They knocked on doors, talked story, identified issues and sought to solve them. This also included securing funds to get additional work done.

One Waimānalo homestead family had been spending more than a $1000 a month on electricity. Lagon and Frizzell were puzzled. The home had no major electrical appliances such as air conditioning. They traced the issue to a leaking water heater and then identified grant funds to replace the water heater for the family.

“Their bill the next month dropped to $100. There was a $900 swing – and it stayed at that level,” said Lagon.

They also came across homeowners who were sold a bill of goods by unethical companies with no follow-up services. In other cases, Shifted Energy upgraded homes with energy-efficient heat pump water heaters and foresaw other issues.

“They were installed outdoors and started to get damaged,” noted Lagon. “So Forest got some more philanthropy dollars, and we came back out and built enclosures for them, like we don’t have to do that, but we want them to have that thing for 20 years.”

Not only did they introduce their product to households, they also helped people in other ways.

In one house visit, Frizzell came across a kūpuna who could not afford to furnish his home. Lagon said he received a call from his co-founder who was determined to find a bed for him to sleep on that night. After calling friends, they were able to deliver a futon.

Lagon calls this “leaning in” to the work they do. “It’s not just about energy. It’s about people and community. And we do that over and over and over again,” he said.

Both founders practice traditional Native Hawaiian farming on weekends and volunteer with the state’s largest technology education nonprofit, Purple Maiʻa, which works in Native Hawaiian communities throughout Hawaiʻi.

Shifted Energy has grown to manage more devices, so they use energy when it is cheapest. Air conditioning systems, electric cars, heat pumps, solar, and batteries can ramp up when power is abundant and ease off when it is costly. The mission never changed. Serve the people most often overlooked.

The company has completed thousands of installations in underserved neighborhoods in Hawaiʻi, on the continent, and in Canada. They have even expanded pilot programs to Europe and Aotearoa (New Zealand).

“I don’t think there’s another company on this earth that is better than us and we’ll beat anyone in any RFP (request for proposal) head-to-head. That is our legacy of Indigenous innovation and here, like you know, we’re the smartest people in the world and not smart in the ʻwestern’ sense but smart in the community sense. We lean into the strength of diversity,” said Lagon.

Lagon’s pride in what they’ve built is well-founded. On Oct. 9, Shifted Energy announced its acquisition by San Francisco-based Resource Innovations (RI), a major move to advance grid-edge technology and bolster energy equity.

“Adding Shifted Energy’s capabilities to RI’s offerings enables us to deliver scalable, end-to-end DSM (demand-side management) and grid-edge solutions to more customer segments than ever before,” said Lauren Casentini, founder and CEO of RI.

Following the announcement, Frizzell said, “Tomorrow we get back to building solutions that are equitable, innovative, and rooted in the communities we come from.”

Shifted Energy is Lagon’s third social venture to grow from small Native Hawaiian nonprofit roots to national and international work. Two of his previous social ventures were acquired by larger firms.

“When Kanaka ʻŌiwi values guide entrepreneurship, solutions can scale here and then everywhere,” said Lagon. “Of course, this is not easy but when you are doing the right thing, how can you not be inspired to bust your ʻēlemu (butt) for the community?”

He continues to lean in – inventing and building to solve problems in new ways that honor community and create equity.

The char siu look cheong fun ($7.50), which features steamed rice noodle rolls, is a unique option. The noodles boast a nice chew, and we liked how we could adequately taste the char siu.

The café’s assorted dim sum selection includes pork hash ($1.60), shrimp dumplings ($1.60), half moon ($1.85) and mini sticky rice ($1.95). While these snacks aren’t as popular as the mini manapua, they’re still a nice option, and we’re told the sticky rice is a customer favorite.

If you want a sweet treat, opt for the café’s acai bowl ($14.95), which is topped with blueberries, strawberries, bananas, granola and a honey drizzle. The acai is refreshing, but not overly sweet. 

 The café’s drink menu is extensive, ranging from fruit teas($6.50) and milk teas ($5.95) to smoothies ($6.95-$11.95).

The most popular smoothie flavors include strawberry banana ($6.95), passion fruit mango ($6.95), dragon fruit mango ($7.95), matcha green ($7.95) and lychee strawberry ($6.95).

At 7-3 overall and 4-2 in Mountain West Conference play, the University of Hawai‘i football team is enjoying its best season of the decade thus far. The Rainbow Warriors, who are idle this week, will take on UNLV at Allegiant Stadium on Nov. 21 with Mountain West championship game hopes still in play for both teams. 

 over the weekend, clinched the program's first winning season since 2019. 

With two regular season games remaining, the Rainbow Warriors are continuing to battle for a spot near the top of the 

. The 'Bows are also set to play in their first bowl game since 2020 in December, though the details will be determined based on how they finish in conference play. 

The Rainbow Warriors have improved each year under fourth-year head coach 

 and are enjoying a breakthrough season in 2025. Perhaps no player on the roster illustrates the program's rise more than redshirt senior running back Landon Sims, who arrived in 2021 out of 

Peninsula High School in Gig Harbor, Wash. 

The son of former UH running back Travis Sims, Landon Sims joined the Rainbow Warriors as a walk-on. At the end of his freshman season, the program went through a period of turbulence, as public dismay towards then-head coach Todd Graham following a mass exodus of players eventually led to his resignation and in turn, Chang taking the job at the end of January 2022. 

Now a redshirt senior on scholarship, Sims has been a steady member of the UH backfield for three seasons. In 2025, he has 487 rushing yards on 104 carries and three touchdowns, building a reputation as a bruiser. The converted tight end also has 233 receiving yards and two touchdowns on 31 catches.

In a Q&A with Aloha State Daily, Sims goes deep about his family's UH legacy, sticking around in Mānoa through the tough times, bearing the fruits of his labor in 2025 and more.

What's it like being the son of Travis Sims, and what was your level of familiarity with UH prior to college? 

 "I had a pretty normal childhood, I'd say. Good, loving father. We always make the joke when we would come out here that anybody over the age of 50 would know who he was, but anyone besides that, no clue. But yeah, it was good. Very early on, I found a love for Hawaiʻi and he made it very clear that he is who he is today because of his time here and what he learned and what this program made him to be. And I feel very similar in that sense. I wouldn't trade it for the world. There's many different ways my life could've turned out. But, I'm more than happy to end up staying here for all of my time [in college]. It absolutely maybe who I am today."

How did playing high school football during the COVID-19 pandemic go for you? 

"Washington was really strict on that kind of stuff. Going into my senior year, they said we weren't going to have a football season because of COVID. That was in 2021, and most of the dreams of college football or whatever, I wasn't planning on it. But then, out of nowhere, the Governor signed a six-week spring season. We found that out in, I think, February, and then we played in March. We only played six games in that spring, and I ended up going All-State, and I did very well that season. Maybe I do want to play college football. Everyone that's been reaching out, all the scholarships were gone in the fall, so that's kind of my my path to being a walk-on. There's a few schools that were interested and when I made my decision, my dad, he stayed completely out of it. I made the decision with the intention that, OK, I'm gonna try it, and if I don't fall in love with it, then I'll go transfer somewhere else and do the academic route. In another life, I'm a frat president at some university, some state school. But like I said, I'm more than happy that I ended up here, and it's all in God's plan, and very grateful that I found my faith and I found my family, my home away from home with that decision."

The end of the 2021 season, your true freshman year, played out pretty publicly. What do you remember about going through that time period as a player? 

"It's funny, because I came out here an hour early this morning, and I was just sitting on the bench reminiscing. And nostalgia is a hell of a thing. I was just talking to these younger guys, and what makes you feel really old is when you're throwing out names of guys and they have no idea who you're talking about. But I've been here longer than the staff, so I have seen some things. And that '21 year, as bad as people make it out to be, I really enjoyed myself, and I absolutely loved it. That's why I stayed here. Even with the coaching change, I absolutely adored everyone that I met and the culture and the lifestyle here. I was a guy that didn't say a word my first two years out here. I just kept my head down and worked, and I think that's why I was a favorite of coach Graham's. But overall, like I said, I really enjoyed my experience on and off the field. It was just great, and that's why I stuck around."

 Out of all the true freshman that came in with you, there's only four of you left. [Sims, Zhen Sotelo, Tariq Jones, David Cordero. Note: Brayden Schager and Maurice Ta'ala were members of the 2021 freshman class that didn't use a redshirt and exhausted their eligibility in 2024. Current redshirt senior Karsyn Pupunu enrolled at Weber State in 2020 before joining the Rainbow Warriors in 2021]. Do you feel a special bond with those guys? 

Oh, for sure. Most definitely. [Note: Hawai‘i had 29 freshmen listed on its roster in 2021]. This is when the transfer portal was just starting out. They would still recruit high school guys. So, we had a big high school class. But yeah, especially the guys that I walked-on with, special bond. David Cordero, Karsyn, we were very differentiated with how we went about things back when Todd Graham was here. We would have our own devo lifts, they would call it, with just the walk-ons only. We would do everything separate from the team. I thought that was the norm, but it made me who I am today. You just keep your head down, and you work and you work and you work. And then eventually people notice that work. It pays off. Those guys did the exact same thing. Great to see both of them on scholarship now, so very special feeling."

How much are you able to appreciate the season you guys are having after going through some of the program's down years? 

 "I talk about this all the time. You got guys coming in this year, guys coming in last year that get to experience winning, and I think it's the most rewarding feeling in the world, right? I get to help contribute to a program, a season that I never had back in the 3-10 days. I said to 

, I was like, 'Man, practice is fun when we're winning.' It's good vibes that I'd never known, not that all we'd ever know was losing here, but it's definitely a different perspective and I know that our team is very faith-based, and we're giving all the glory to God, whether it's a 3-10 season, whether it's a 10-3 season. But what I'm trying to get these guys on board with is they don't realize we can be one of these legendary teams. We can be a 2007 era team. We can be a 1992 era team if we keep this trajectory and keep winning and keep buying in. [Note: Travis Sims was the leading rusher for an 11-2 Hawai‘i football team in 1992, considered one of the greatest seasons in program history]. The magnitude of this season is great. Just going forward to put Hawai‘i on the map, especially in a day and age where NIL rules all and loyalty is a thing of the past. And college football, like I said, I think it's great and extremely rewarding, and I really wanted to show something from my time here and being able to do that in my last year is the best feeling."

As a college senior, how much thought have you given to your next steps following the season?

A lot of different doorways. Never in 1,000 years would I have thought I would have a chance at playing in the next level if you told me that three, four years ago. But with my track record and being as consistent I've been playing, who knows? I think I'm going to kick myself if I don't pursue that. So, I will be given everything I have and putting effort into going to the next level and playing professional. And if that doesn't work out, then I've done a great job off the field, I think, networking and building my career. That aspect, I've interned at First Hawaiian Bank for the past two years during the summer, and they've done a great job and a great program, just showing me what I kind of want to do with my life and my career. I got my finance degree last spring and I'll get my finance masters this summer. So, definitely something in that realm. But whether I remain here or not, it's up to God, so something I'll pray about, and either/or, I'd be perfectly happy." 

You've seen a lot of people come and go in your five years here. Is there anyone you'd like to shout out? Or are there too many names to name?

"There is a lot to name, but one that one that stands out is Victor Santa Cruz. He was the guy that recruited me here. Fun fact, when I committed, I didn't even know who our head coach was. I was just that out of the loop. I just like, sure, I'll try football. But he's the one that got me here and got me rooted. But just every coach I've had along the way, I've been blessed. I haven't had any negative experiences, from Abe Elimimian to Keiki Misipeka to coach [Anthony] Arceneaux now. Coach Thomas Sheffield was my coach as a tight end for two years. I've just been blessed with great mentors, great coaches, and just a great family atmosphere. And with the transfer portal, it's a bit tougher to build those relationships, because guys come and go every six months. But the guys that stuck around from the start, those are the guys that you can really share bonds with and look back on, like, man, look where we came from. And like I said, it's the most rewarding feeling in the world because of that, just to see how far you've come."

Thanks a lot for your time. Is there anything you'd like to add? 

"Just show as much support as you can as we finish the season out. I think we saw this past week how much of an impact it means when we play at home, when we have the atmosphere and the fans and the weather and just being at home and playing for the state. So whoever it may be, show out and show your support wherever you can."

With a groundbreaking and blessing ceremony on Thursday, James Campbell Co. marked the start of construction on Nāliko, its newest residential community in Kapolei. The $170 million development will bring 300 rental homes to the West O‘ahu community.

, president and CEO of James Campbell Co. since 2024, says the project is “more than new construction. It is an investment in people, in community and in the future of West O‘ahu.”

It’s also a historic moment for the company.

“Over many decades, our lands have supported thousands of homes across Kapolei and West O‘ahu,” he told the crowd gathered Thursday. “This is the first time we are developing a housing community that we intend to own as part of our long-term portfolio.”

The project can be found on 2.7 acres across from Kapolei Regional Park, at the corner of Kama‘aha Avenue and Manawai Street. It’ll feature five stories of residences built around a six-story parking garage, according to an announcement Friday.

TCA Architects designed the project and Moss & Associates is leading construction, which is expected to be finished in 2027.

Penn told Aloha State Daily that there will be a mix of studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom units, but a bulk of those — 175 — will be one-bedroom.

Matthew Caires, vice president of development affairs for the company, told ASD after the groundbreaking that there’s a critical need for rentals, especially affordable rentals.

Of the 300 units in the new development, 80% will be market rate while 20% will be reserved for households earning 80% of the area median income or below, he says. Income limits vary depending on the household size, but you can see the City and County of Honolulu’s 

A project that has been several years in the making, Caires says the company is “incredibly grateful” to get to this point.

, found that Hawai‘i will need an estimated 64,490 additional housing units by 2027 to meet demand.

This project represents another step in our shared kuleana to meet Hawai‘i’s housing needs and to create opportunities that allow West O‘ahu families to build their futures right here at home.”
