I have to admit, I was pretty disappointed when KuruKuru Sushi closed in Pearl Kai Shopping Center (its only location is now in Kāhala Mall). I have fond memories of going to the casual sushi spot with friends during college, and it’s one of the few sushi spots close to where I live.

However, all isn’t lost, as another sushi and poke spot opened in the vacant spot.

Domo Café soft opened over the weekend in Pearl Kai Shopping Center. The biz is known for its made-to-order sushi and poke bowls, along with bento and sushi platters. This is its third location; Domo Café’s other locations are in downtown Honolulu and Kāhala.

During its soft opening, the eatery is open for takeout only, but customers are welcome to sit at the tables inside the restaurant. Full-service dining will begin after the grand opening, which will take place sometime after Mother’s Day.

Take your pick from the eatery’s poke bowl selection. Popular poke bowl options include the Domo Special ($16.95) — a colorful medley of salmon, ‘ahi, hamachi, onions and avocado — spicy tempura bowl ($18.95) and mixed bowl with ‘ahi and salmon ($15.95). No matter what you get, rest assured that your order features sashimi-grade ‘ahi.

Sushi rolls and sets range from simpler California rolls ($12.95) to salmon, ‘ahi, hamachi and ebi nigiri ($15.95) and the spicy ‘ahi bomb set ($18.95). The latter features spicy ‘ahi in inari sushi.

Domo Café also offers a variety of bento specials ($16.95), which come with miso soup. If you want something besides sushi, go for the furikake salmon and aburi hamachi combo ($19.95), or misoyaki butterfish with aburi (torched) ‘ahi with salad ($24.95). We enjoy the ‘ahi and salmon nigiri with four-piece California roll and shoyu ‘ahi poke ($16.95).

Domo Café’s Pearl Kai location will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
