The U.S. House of Representatives voted Thursday to pass the Gulf of America Act, a Republican proposal to rename the Gulf of Mexico and require the federal government to update the gulf’s name on all official records.

The vote was split neatly along party lines, with 211 Republicans voting in support of the measure, and 205 Democrats — including Hawai‘i representatives Ed Case and Jill Tokuda — voting against. The only representative to break with their party was Nebraska Rep. Don Bacon, who voted against the proposal.

"In line with the President’s misguided version of what makes America 'great', House Republicans prioritized renaming the Gulf of Mexico over bringing down the cost of living for everyday Americans,” Tokuda said in a statement to Aloha State Daily. “So glad they’ve solved skyrocketing rent, healthcare costs, and egg prices with a name change. Nothing says 'governing' like symbolic rebranding while real problems go ignored.”

Having passed the House, the measure now goes to the Senate for consideration.
