Board meetings are about to become a little more interesting, you've just got to BYOB — bring your own board.
Romer House Waikīkī is set to launch Après Surf, a new community surf club hosted by pro surfers Meg Godinez, also known as Aunty Megz, and Makoa Kaleiki Ho. The inaugural, ahem, board meeting will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, July 18, in celebration of Godinez's birthday.
A July 1 announcement from Romer House Waikīkī, the first adults-only hotel on O‘ahu, says that the idea was inspired by the "spirit of après ski culture," or the social activities after a day of skiing.
The day starts with a surf meet-up at 9 a.m., followed by Après Surf from noon to 3 p.m. at the Romer House Backyard Pool and Bar. You can learn more here.
According to the announcement, the time spent surfing will be followed by a "celebratory round of St-Germain Hugo Spritzes and a cool-down recovery session at the Backyard."
“Committed to celebrating the legacy and new discoveries of our iconic Waikīkī neighborhood, Romer House is proud to launch this new series with our friends, Aunty Megz and Makoa Ho, as together, we build a new kind of surf community in Waikīkī,” Ramona Sidlo, mayor of the block, Romer House Waikīkī, said in the announcement.
The lifestyle series will be held quarterly, with the potential for pop-ups if the opportunity arises, Sidlo said in an emailed response to questions from Aloha State Daily.
The second session will be hosted by Ho this fall, "continuing the program's mission to create inclusive cultural moments and to champion authentic community engagement," the announcement noted. That date will be finalized soon.
"Every neighborhood has a spot where visitors and locals rub shoulders — places that some choose to call home, and others seek out for a taste of something entirely different. Romer Neighborhood Hotels are at the center of it all," Sidlo said. "This new lifestyle series at Romer House Waikīkī invites guests and kama’āina to experience the iconic and vibrant heart of Waikiki; to get to know inspirational role models like Megz and Makoa in a uniquely personal way, embrace the wonders of surfing, and the connection through cultural understandings, and to discover the distinctive clubhouse experiences found only at Romer House Waikīkī."
Après Surf is free and open to both the public and guests of the hotel.
Managed by Highgate, Romer House Waikīkī, a Romer Neighborhood Hotel, is located at 415 Nāhua St. It opened in June 2024.
