“Defining Courage” is an immersive live show that honors the legacy of 

Hawai’i’s Nisei soldiers of World War II

. The show will return to Hawai’i for three performances in November. There will be shows on Nov. 8 and 9 at President William McKinley High School on O’ahu, and on Nov. 10 at H.P. Baldwin High School on Maui.

Immediately following the attack on Pearl Harbor, many Selective Service boards 

rejected Americans of Japanese ancestry from military service

. This live show merges footage, eye-witness interviews and original music to tell the story of the 100th Infantry Battalion, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, the Military Intelligence Service and the 522nd Field Artillery Battalion — segregated Japanese American units which included many soldiers who were born and raised in Hawai’i. Tickets are $20 for the shows on Maui and $30 for the ones on O’ahu. 

“McKinley High School was the alma mater of U.S. Senator Daniel K. Inouye, as well as many other young men who went on to serve in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. At a time when Japanese Americans were being incarcerated on the continent, and even here in Hawai‘i solely because of the color of their skin, these brave young men registered to serve to prove their loyalty to the United States,” said Jennifer Sabas, director of the Daniel K. Inouye Institute and former chief of staff to Senator Inouye, in a written statement. “The courage and sacrifice of this greatest generation is deeply relevant today as we face new challenges throughout our country.”

The event is narrated by the Emmy Award-winning ABC7 Los Angeles News Anchor David Ono. The music is by Enzo De Roza and Sheridan Seyfried. The upcoming performances in Hawai’i feature the Grammy Award–winning Daniel Ho, acclaimed songwriter Harold Payne, and the Raise Choir.

Previously, this live immersive show was held in 

, according to the website for “Defining Courage.”

The show is presented by Story Boldly, the Japanese American National Museum, and Outside In Theatre, with support from The Henri and Tomoye Takahashi Charitable Foundation. The project was funded with support from the 

Japanese American Confinement Sites grant program

, which works to acquire and preserve the sites where Japanese Americans were detained during World War II, so “present and future generations may learn and gain inspiration from these sites,” according to its website. The grant program falls under the U.S. National Park Service, which is part of the U.S. Department of the Interior.

Local partners for the Hawai’i performances include Pacific Historic Parks, Daniel K. Inouye Institute, Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii, and National Parks Service. The shows are sponsored by Kaimana Hila, Hawaiian Electric Industries Charitable Foundation, Island Insurance Foundation, First Hawaiian Bank, Servco, ABC Stores, and Zippy's Restaurants. The Wailuku performance is supported in part by the County of Maui.

The Hawaiʻi born artist Tanja Browne gives old surfboards new life by creating elaborate tile mosaics with designs that include tropical seabirds, skulls and mountain ranges.

On Thursday, Oct. 23, Browne and another mosaic artist, Leah Kilpatrick Rigg, will have their art on display starting at 6 p.m. for the opening night of the 

. There will be complimentary food, drinks and live music. The gallery’s nonprofit partner 

Browne “haphazardly started” working with tile about 20 years ago, she told Aloha State Daily.

“I don't know why I chose tile,” she said. “Living on an island, it's hard to get it here. It's expensive. It's hard to handle. It's heavy. I could have been painting.”

“Something about the medium just really pulled me in,” Browne added. “It was something about breaking it down and reconstituting it into something that — once you step away — you see something that becomes greater than the sum of its parts.”

Browne started making tile into art when she was a stay-at-home mom “and I probably needed to crack things up,” she said with a big laugh. Three years ago, she decided to pursue her art more seriously. She took a risk and did a design on a surfboard.

“Because I was born and raised in Hawaiʻi, you're always conscious of the landfill, the landfill, the landfill,” Browne said. “And how much water you're using. And just really trying to be sustainable about things. And so there are all these retired surfboards everyone has from 20 years ago, living under their house, and they can't get rid of them. The minute they find out that someone's going to turn it into art, they're like, ʻPlease take it!’ ”

The boards come to her with so much mana, she said.

“I mean the energy of the shaper, and then the rider and the waves that they've been in, and the memories,” she said.

Browne does not surf, but she did design the trophies for the Hurley Pro Sunset Beach in 2023 and 2024. Browne did not do designs this year since the competition was taken off the 

World Surfing League’s championship tour

 have started saving samples and surplus overruns for her that would normally be thrown away, Browne said.

“Really, despite being made of earth, tile —

because of the glazes — it actually takes a really long time to break down,” she added. “It's not a great thing to go into the construction and demolition pit with all the other stuff. So they were happy to give it to me.”

Browne stores the samples in her garage and challenges herself to use them in projects, she said.

“I will bring in tile,” Browne said. “But as a rule, I do try to use what's on island first. It’s kind of a nice challenge to see how can I take this white boring tile and make it interesting?”

She did her first surfboard project for the Friends of Sunset Beach’s annual art auction, Celebrating the Arts. A friend gave her a board and it “came together like magic,” Browne said. As she walked into the event, people were turning their heads and wanting to touch it, she said. The piece never made it to auction, selling for double the “buy now” price, instead.

Browne’s completed mosaic surfboards usually weigh 30 pounds or less, including packing materials used to keep the work safe when she transports it to neighbor islands or the mainland.

 is located in the former Surfers Bakery space in Ala Moana Center. The Halloween-themed pop-up bar is open daily from 6 p.m. to midnight until Oct. 31. Individuals must be 21 years or older to enter.

The pop-up features a spooky, bewitching Halloween theme. It’s not as gory as its sister pop-up, 

The different sections of the pop-up have various themes. The right side features a scary pumpkin patch.

Meanwhile, the left side of the pop-up is inspired by a vampire’s lair. The middle section boasts an impressive pumpkin display.

The pictures along the wall are inspired by the 

, located at Hawaiʻi’s Plantation Village in Waipahu. The bar area features a graveyard-like set-up. If you look closely, the back wall features “poison bottles,” set up to look like an apothecary.

Ghost Bar features a variety of festive drinks, including witches’ brew ($15), slasher sour ($15), Hocus Pocus ($15), syringe shots ($12) and blood punch cauldron ($45).

Hocus Pocus ($15) features Butterbeer and Tanduay Especia with a whipped topping. The blood punch cauldron ($45) is designed to share and features a mix of passion fruit, orange and guava puree with Kōloa Kaua

Syringe shots ($12) feature Green River, Blue Vanilla or Bubble Gum with a choice of Tito’s, Jameson or Espolon Blanco.
