Aloha State Daily rounded up several movies with ties to the Islands. “Chaperone” was shot entirely in Hilo on Hawaiʻi Island, while “The Paper Bag Plan” comes from Executive Producer Keʻalohi Lee Lucero, who grew up in Kaʻaʻawa and graduated from Kamehameha Schools and the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Finally, “Tinā” is set in New Zealand but had its world premiere at the Hawaiʻi International Film Festival last year and features actor Beaulah Koale, who has been part of the television shows “Hawaiʻi Five-0,” “NCIS: Hawaiʻi” and “Magnum P.I.”
Three movies with Hawaiʻi ties ...
“Chaperone.” The age-gap story set in Hilo focuses on Misha, a 29-year-old, and the teenager, Jake, who mistakes her for a high school student. With music by Taimane and an entirely American Asian, Native Hawaiian and Pasifika cast, “Chaperone” is in Consolidated Theatres through Sept. 25. Catch the movie in Waimea, Kona and Honokaʻa on Hawaiʻi Island. It will be available digitally nationwide through FilmHub starting Friday, Oct. 3.
“The Paper Bag Plan.” Tickets are now on sale for “The Paper Bag Plan,” an independent film from Executive Producer Keʻalohi Lee Lucero, who grew up in Kaʻaʻawa and graduated from Kamehameha Schools and the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. It was written and directed by her husband, Anthony Lucero. The movie shares the story of a father, Oscar, who is diagnosed with cancer and seeks a way for his wheelchair bound son, Billy, to be independent without him. “The Paper Bag Plan” debuts at Consolidated Theatres at Ward on Thursday, Sept. 18. Lucero will host a post-screening Q+A with the audience on Friday, Sept. 19, and Saturday, Sept. 20. Runs through Sept. 25. Get tickets.
“Tinā.” This movie tells the story of Mareta Percival, who reluctantly becomes a substitute teacher at a private school in New Zealand, where she starts a choir and transforms lives. “Tinā” had its world premiere at the Hawaiʻi International Film Festival last year. In the cast is actor Beulah Koale, who has been part of the television shows “Hawaiʻi Five-0,” “NCIS: Hawaiʻi,” and “Magnum P.I.” The movie has already been showing in New Zealand and Australia but opened in theaters in Guam, American Samoa and Hawaiʻi on Aug. 28. Runs through Sept. 25. Get tickets.
