There’s a new Japanese breakfast option in town — Tonkatsu @ Honolulu, known for its Nagoya-style deep-fried pork cutlets, recently launched its new breakfast menu. Breakfast is served from 8 to 10 a.m. Mondays to Wednesdays and Fridays.

The eatery’s breakfast menu mostly features onigiri for takeout or dine-in. Onigiri are made with Niji No Kirameki rice, which is the same rice featured in the restaurant’s teishoku sets.

Choose from flavors like salmon, spicy cod roe with mayo, tuna mayo and ume. Prices range from $2.50 to $6, depending on the onigiri flavor. The onigiri are a generous size, especially if you opt for the larger tonkatsu options. The tonkatsu is thick, complete with a crispy panko exterior; we opted for the miso version, since we enjoyed the eatery’s housemade miso sauce.

We’re told all onigiri are made with seasoned rice — flavored with dashi and salt — except for the Nameshi (Japanese leafy greens) onigiri. This onigiri is a unique option and features an umami flavor; it comprises a medley of different chopped greens, along with daikon leaves.

If you order two onigiri as a set, you’ll get a $1 discount. The set includes two onigiri of your choice, along with tonjiru, which is a savory pork and vegetable miso soup. The set varies in price; it depends on the onigiri flavors you get.

Customers can also opt for iced matcha or kinako lattes ($5 each). Both lattes are made with whole milk. We loved the creamy, nutty flavor from the kinako latte.

Self-parking is available in the parking lot adjacent to the restaurant (parking lot entrance located along Waimanu Street). Scan the QR code inside the restaurant to get one hour of free parking.
