Japanese-fusion eatery Sunset Noodle House recently opened in Kailua. According to Jason Chang, one of the restaurant owners, the business’s name is inspired by its neighborhood.

“We are so close to Lanikai Beach; I always go to Lanikai Beach for sunset,” he explains.

The restaurant features a variety of ramen, which feature housemade broths and noodles from Sun Noodle.

“The soup bases take 48 to 50 hours to make,” Chang says. “They are very thick and creamy.”

All ramen bowls feature a choice of thin or thick noodles.

The short rib ramen ($20.99) is immediately eye catching. It features a beef bone soup with short rib, wood ear mushrooms, bean sprouts, egg, green onions and bamboo shoots.

“We specialize in the short rib and tan tan ramen; those have been popular in the last few days,” Chang says.

Meanwhile, the tan tan ramen ($15.99) features a pork soup base, housemade tan tan sauce, char siu, wood ear mushrooms, bean sprouts, an egg, green onions and bamboo shoots. Customers can choose their desired spice level.

Other ramen options include house special tonkotsu ($15.99), chicken katsu ($15.99), vegetarian ($10.99) and seafood ($32.99). The latter includes lobster, scallops and squid, according to Chang.

If you’re not in the mood for ramen, choose from a variety of rice bowls — including mixed tempura don ($16.99), curry chicken katsu don ($15.99) and teriyaki chicken don ($14.99) and build-your-own combo meals. The combo meals feature two-choice ($18.99) or three-choice ($20.99) sets, comprising one or two appetizers and a main entrée.

The combo of seaweed soup, deep-fried gyoza and unagi rice comes highly recommended.

Appetizers range from pan-fried gyoza ($7.25) and chicken karaage ($9.99) to takoyaki ($8.99) and agedashi tofu ($6.99). The pan-fried gyoza boasts a delicate, crispy exterior and succulent interior. We also enjoyed the agedashi tofu, which is soft on the inside and topped generously with bonito flakes.

Chang also recommends trying the eatery’s jasmine lemon tea ($5.95), which is especially refreshing after a savory meal.
