Asato Family Shop’s “local kine” sherbet will soon be available in Waikīkī.

Asatos Waikīkī is opening this Sunday, Nov. 23. The shop — located within Kings & Queens at Hyatt Regency Waikīkī Beach Resort & Spa — will be open daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

If you’re entering from Kalākaua Avenue, the shop is across from Duke Kahanamoku’s statue.

Business owner Neale Asato always wanted to have a Waikīkī location. The biz had an orange truck toward the beginning of Waikīkī, but the location wasn’t ideal.

The new spot within Kings & Queens Hawaiʻi is in the former space of Dylan’s Candy Bar.

The flavors at the Waikīkī store will be similar to those at the downtown Honolulu location, but the new store will only offer scoops ($6 each) — no pints (customers can find pints at the business’s downtown Honolulu store, and via wholesale at Foodland Farms Pearl City, Ka Makana Aliʻi and Aina Haina stores). The shop will also offer sorbet/non-dairy flavors ($6 each).

“We’ll probably have eight to 10 flavors,” Asato says. “We’ll always be scooping out our seasonal, specialty flavors, and have our classic three. We’ll probably always have POG and a couple staples on the menu.”

The menu currently includes flavors like strawberry, pineapple, Green River, li hing float and more.

This Waikīkī shop will not only offer sherbet, but also Japanese-style shave ice — or kakigori — and a drink bar that features craft sodas with a variety of flavor combinations.

“We’re going to make all kinds of toppings for shave ice,” Asato says. “Maybe mid-December, we’ll start.”

For this Sunday’s opening, the first 100 customers will get free sherbet scoops, and the first 25 customers will get a free reusable Asatos Waikīkī tote bag.

“I’m excited to finally scoop for everyone and share all the flavors of Hawaiʻi,” Asato says. “There’s a lot of locals that go to the beach right here. We have a lot of fun things planned, like events and collabs we can do here. We’re excited to be here.”
