County and state officials mourned the death of Hawai‘i County Fire Chief Kazuo Todd after his sudden death on Sunday.
The office of Hawai‘i County Mayor Kimo Alameda announced Sunday morning that Todd had died “from natural causes.” He was 45 years old.
Todd served six years as battalion chief before he was appointed Fire Chief in April of 2021, and served in the Fire Department for 21 years before his death.
“Chief Todd was a respected leader in our community and a devoted husband, father, and public servant,” Alameda said in a statement. “For more than two decades, he served our County with dedication and integrity. His unwavering commitment to public safety created an enduring legacy that will continue to protect and uplift our island.”
Gov. Josh Green issued his own statement, calling Todd “an example for those in the first service in Hawai‘i County and across the state.”
“The Office of the State Fire Marshal stands ready to provide any support needed and remains committed to walking alongside the Hawai‘i County Fire Department with respect, compassion and solidarity in the days ahead,” said State Fire Marshal Dori Booth in her own statement.
Following Todd’s passing, Deputy Chief Daniel Volpe will serve as acting fire chief until the Hawai‘i Fire Commission names a successor.
