One of the most notable historical facts about this property is that the building on it was burned down on February 27, 1900. On purpose.

As the bubonic plague swept through Honolulu, the Board of Health sought to rid Hawai‘i of the pestilence by fire. On January 20, one “controlled burn” was fueled by strong winds coming down from Nu‘uanu Valley, causing the fire to rage out of control. It burned for 17 days, destroying lives and businesses, and reducing 38 acres of Honolulu’s Chinatown to little more than ash and rubble. Despite the losses in Chinatown, the plague continued to spread.

After the death of a third employee at the Hawaiian Hotel Stables on the corner of Richards and Hotel Streets, the Board of Health once again set fire to the establishment in hopes of eradicating the plague. The outbreak was considered “under control” by March 31.

The stables were rebuilt and remained in use for a few more years until automobiles made them obsolete. Later structures on the Richards, Hotel, and Alakea Street block included physicians’ offices, an art studio, a service station, and an auto dealership, until 1958, when the city opened a new off-street parking garage.

Finally, in 1990, a groundbreaking ceremony marked the start of construction on a new office and retail complex called Ali‘i Place. The 9-story and 23-story structures were approved with plans to house the offices of the Prosecuting Attorney, Police Commission, and other city agencies.

Day after day, the work conducted inside the walls of the Prosecuting Attorney’s office revolves around violence, fear, accountability, and loss. Even when handled professionally and at a distance, those emotions are brought into the office space daily through stories, evidence, testimony, photographs, recordings, and decisions that permanently alter lives.

This creates what many researchers and parapsychologists describe as residual emotional energy. Emotions tend to imprint on the environment, but strong emotions, especially trauma, tend to imprint more deeply than ordinary experiences. In a prosecutor’s office, the emotional residue of grief, moral conflict, anger, and frustration tends to collect in these enclosed spaces.

People who work in these offices may feel uneasy without knowing why. Tension and fatigue are common feelings when entering these spaces. As parapsychologist, Loyd Auerbach explains, this doesn’t require belief in the supernatural. Human beings are highly sensitive to environmental cues such as light, temperature, and sound, as well as to the more subtle effects of memory and residual emotion. When a space is repeatedly used for passionate, contentious, and sensitive work, the body can react before the mind catches up.

The result can be a workplace that feels heavy, draining, or tense even on quiet days.

A former clerk in the building described being shoved in an empty hallway on her way to her boss’s office. When someone suggested she had probably tripped, she emphatically denied it, stating that there was definite pressure against her back, between her shoulders, that pushed her forward and nearly caused her to fall.

“It was absolutely a shove,” she explained. “Maybe it wasn’t a ghost, but it was scary and weird.”

One former deputy prosecutor shared his experiences at Aliʻi Place with me. He said they often happened late at night and in the early morning, when most offices were dark, and the familiar daytime noise had drained away.

On several occasions, he found himself sleeping in his office, as late-night preparations often led to early-morning court appearances. He slept with his office door closed, the hallway outside silent. More than once, he was jolted awake by a loud, deliberate knock on the door. Not a tap or a sound that could be mistaken for settling walls or air pressure. It was a knock that carried intent. Each time, he got up and opened the door immediately, and each time the hallway was empty. There were no footsteps or voices retreating. Nothing to explain who, or what, had been there.

Another incident stayed with him just as clearly. He was alone in the men’s restroom, seated in a stall, when the lights abruptly shut off. The room went completely dark. This was not a motion sensor or timed switch. The lights in that restroom require a manual flip of the switch. The layout made it impossible to see the door or the switch from the stalls, and the walls blocked any direct line of sight. He listened closely. There was no sound of footsteps or of the door opening or closing. No indication that anyone else had entered the room. He sat there in the darkness, aware of how suddenly the space had changed, how absolute the silence felt. When he finally stood and checked, the restroom was empty.

He never claimed these moments were proof of anything supernatural, and he acknowledged that there could be explanations he simply didn’t have. But he does accept that they did happen.

At a place where every decision might hold a person’s life in your hands, he believes that kind of work leaves a mark. And in the quiet hours, when the building is no longer bustling with activity, it sometimes feels as if that accumulated weight finds small ways to make itself known.

When a young Jackie Johnson III wasn't out fishing with his father, one could probably spot him in Pauoa with his best friend, Ka‘eo Akana, and his father, Kip. 

Johnson was essentially an extended member of the Akana family, forging a bond with Ka‘eo when the two were middle school students at St. Francis. Kip, the varsity baseball and football coach at the school, noticed Johnson's competitive spirit as an intermediate baseball player and encouraged him to come out for football. 

"I was a baseball player at first, so football took some getting used to," Johnson recently told Aloha State Daily. 

Baseball was Johnson's first love, but football grew on him each time he stepped on the gridiron. Johnson played varsity ball for Akana at St. Francis, playing fullback and linebacker.

"Jack was always enthusiastic about working hard from a young age," Kip Akana said. "He was a kid that took great pleasure in doing hard things when it would come to training. It was clear to me that he was different."

That mentality carried Johnson through the adversity that would come his way. St. Francis closed as a school, leading to a transfer to Roosevelt. Then the COVID-19 pandemic hit, wiping away what would have been his senior season of high school football. 

Although the HHSAA did not hold a football season in 2020, Johnson continued to hone his craft as a defensive lineman through the TrenchDawg Group, which at the time was a local football organization, specializing in offensive and defensive line play. It was created by former St. Francis offensive line coach Whitley Fehoko. Johnson earned valuable reps against future NFL offensive lineman 

, current Oregon center Poncho Laloulu and others with college offers. 

"TrenchDawgs gave me an opportunity to put the pads on and really develop, because the only way to get better is putting pads on. On top of the lifting and running, it was a great opportunity," Johnson said. 

The tape Johnson put together in TrenchDawg games and practices was enough to garner interest from Division II and III schools. Lawrence Tech, an NAIA school in Southfield, Mich., was the only school to offer Johnson a football scholarship. 

"It wasn't a full scholarship, but I just took it and ran with it," Johnson said. 

Johnson had two strong years with the Blue Devils, establishing himself as one of their best players. He was happy there, but Akana couldn't shake the feeling that he was destined for more. Akana made calls to Hawai‘i head coach Timmy Chang and associate head coach Chris Brown in the 2023 offseason, vouching for Johnson and advocating for him to join as a walk-on. After reviewing his tape, Brown offered Johnson a spot on the team. With where things were in the calendar, Johnson had to leave Lawrence Tech almost immediately. One of Johnson's coaches at Lawrence Tech warned him that moves like the one he was about to make rarely work out. 

Hawai‘i defensive ends coach Jordan Pu‘u-Robinson quickly realized that this TrenchDawg came from a different breed. 

"We were having summer workouts, and we're doing some drills for about 10, 15 minutes, and he got into a big argument with Andrew Choi, who was a senior starter and leader at the time, and Andrew basically called him out and said, 'Jackie, relax. You're a walk-on,'" Pu‘u-Robinson recalled. "That moment, it told me that this kid didn't really care about making friends or being liked. He wanted to be the best. That just shows his competitive nature. And that's really who he is. He's extremely intentional, hard-working and hyper competitive every single day."

When asked about the incident following a recent practice, Johnson said "those guys were like my older brothers. We're close. But yeah, you can't get bullied."

Johnson played in four games in 2023, preserving a redshirt. He played in all 12 games for the Rainbow Warriors in 2024, leading the team with five sacks. He saved his best for last in 2025, earning All-Mountain West first-team honors with 7.5 sacks and 8.5 tackles for loss, cementing himself as one of the most feared edge rushers on the West Coast. 

"Jackie is just a tough warrior. He's competitive, he's tough. He's hard-nosed. He gets after it," UH defensive coordinator 

 said of Johnson, who is listed at 6 feet and 245 pounds on the UH roster. "Need more like him, you know? I mean, he's not the tallest guy, he's not the fastest guy, but what he does, he brings it every single day. And when you have that and those types of players, you'll go to war with them every time."

Ka‘eo Akana, a junior defensive end for the Rainbow Warriors alongside Johnson, is doing his best to treasure the time he has left with his close friend as his teammate. 

"There's no feeling like it. That's my brother for life. Jackie Johnson, my boy. It's just a hard thing to explain," he said following a brief pause. "I love my boy, and we'll send him out the right way."

With one game left in his college career, Johnson will explore his pro options following the 

 on Wednesday. For now, he refuses to look past Cal, which will serve as another opportunity for him to showcase his his skills. 

"God willing on that situation, I have maybe a few avenues to what I'm gonna do after but right now, I'm just focusing on this game," Johnson said. "Quite frankly, I think this is the biggest game of the season. I think we should be attacking it like that. They're a good team, and I'm just extremely excited."

The University of Hawai‘i's 2025 season was extended by nearly a month after gaining bowl eligibility, and the Rainbow Warriors have certainly cherished the extra time.

 on Nov. 29 merely marked the end of the regular season for the Rainbow Warriors. By virtue of their 8-4 regular season, UH qualified for the Hawai‘i Bowl, where it will face California on Wednesday at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. 

With each passing victory, head coach Timmy Chang's debut season in 2022 seems like a distant memory to those who witnessed it. The Rainbow Warriors went 3-10, hampered by a roster that was broken and under repair following the aftermath of the Todd Graham's tenure in Mānoa. 

In the 25 extra days the 2025 team has had between their regular season and bowl game, the 'Bows have been hard at work, studying a formidable Cal team that features 

 in quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele, safety Aiden Manutai and interim head coach Nick Rolovich.

, they've also enjoyed some of the perks of bowl week, which includes a five-night stay in 

Waikīkī and a gift package that includes items such as Oakley sunglasses, JBL headphones, multiple shirts, a Nike sweatsuit and a pair of Nike panda dunks, among a handful of other free goodies. 

"It was four years in the making," associate head coach Chris Brown told Aloha State Daily. "I'm especially happy for guys like Zhen Sotelo and Jalen Smith and 

. These guys who were here from day one, never quit, never gave up. They give their heart and soul, their blood, their bodies out there on the football field."

Despite being O‘ahu residents, the team got to play tourist for the week, taking team trips to Pearl Harbor and 

Wet 'n' Wild in addition to having a team luau. 

"To see these guys actually get rewarded for all their hard work, it's really special. And I'm really, really proud of these guys, and they earned it," Brown said. "But it's always going to be business. We're going to give our 110% to get this victory against Cal. But I know in between our training and our workouts, these boys are bonding with each other, and it's going to be something that these boys will take for the rest of their lives."

Brown was a linebacker for Hawai‘i in the inaugural Hawai‘i Bowl in 2002. The Warriors entered the game 10-2 and were favored against a 7-5 Tulane squad. 

"I will never forget doing the haka. We decided to do the haka before the game started, and we were so exhausted that we decided to never do it ever again," Brown said. 

Tulane began the game with with a surprise onside kick. Hawai‘i, as Brown alluded to, couldn't find consistency throughout the game.

Chang, who is coaching in the Hawai‘i Bowl for the first time, was a two-time Hawai‘i Bowl MVP as a player. 

"Just getting to the game and being grateful to be there, I think those were some of the most important things," Chang said.

In the 2003 Hawai‘i Bowl, Chang didn't start the game but won MVP honors after completing 26 of his 42 passes for 475 yards, five touchdowns and an interception. UH prevailed 54-48, outlasting Houston. Following the game, a 

 broke out between both teams. Helmets were tossed and swung over the course of the 10-minute melee. Although Chang chose not to elaborate on the brawl 22 years later, Brown certainly did. 

"I tell you what, I was alumni at that time, but watching that game, I said, 'Attaboy, great job, Hawai‘i. Nobody comes into our house and pushes us around,'" Brown said. "To see the boys get up and defend the Island and defend their brothers, man, I mean, that's Hawai‘i, you know? Don't expect to just walk over us. We all stand together, and we're not here to get beat. We're here to win. We all, as alumni, were very proud of that day when the boys stood up for themselves."

While Chang and Brown got to enjoy bowl week multiple times, they're now coaching a team that is brand new to it. 

"Just hanging with the boys, doing whatever, going to the beach, going out to eat with the boys, just having that extra conversation with the boys," freshman slot receiver Tama Uiliata said when asked what his favorite part of bowl week was following a recent practice. "Just to know them on a deeper level, not just on the field. You can go have fun with them, just chop it up. The chemistry really plays a part here. Just spending time with the boys that you don't really have during the season."

With bowl week set to come to a close following Wednesday's game, there's only one way the Rainbow Warriors are planning for it to end. 

"I grew up personally watching this game and going to the games with my family," UH star quarterback 

 said. "It's just restoring traditions for a lot of people, a lot of families. Being able to do that for the state, and bring joy back going out there and just put our best showing out."

It's a phrase I coined at the beginning of my radio talk show — which is on its way to 32 years on the air — and that statement is still relevant and it's still invoked today.

Your rates are set by the Honolulu Board of Water Supply in a regulatory capacity and the more you use, the more you pay. It's a semi-autonomous governmental determination.

Government has power and influence over virtually all aspects of our lives.

I'm simply trying to get the message across that if government touches all of our lives whether we like it or not then we should know our government which has the most over arching and sweeping influence over our lives.

A common response is, "I don't trust elections. My vote doesn't really count."

These sentiments appear to be reflected by our embarrassing lack of voter turnout.

[{"type":"text","text":"In the 2024 general election, Hawai‘i voter turnout was 50.3%. "}]

In the 2024 general election, the United States average voter turnout was 64.1% according to Ballotpedia.

Hawai‘i voter turnout is exceedingly lower in mid-term elections and primaries.

The highest voter turnout percentages in recent state history were in the 2020 and 2024 general elections with 55.7% and 50.3%, respectively.

The attributable reason is the name of President Donald J. Trump appearing as a candidate.

Regarding thoughts that your vote doesn't count. Please consider several locals races that were razor-thin in the last election.

Questions about the veracity of election tabulations have concerned (and understandably so) many locals for many years, fueling them not to vote. This is a critical story regarding voter integrity and with your awareness and participation in the hearings process this could be the first step for election reform in our state.

Our chosen system of government is a representative democracy. Our voices and sentiments are codified by proxies that we elect on our behalf. It's then our job to ensure they do. If not then it's our job to remove and select those who will.

I am also very much aware of sentiments expressed that our system of government is corrupt, self-serving, deaf and commands the lowest levels of trust. I understand. But I also understand there are individuals who serve or campaign to serve that are people of integrity, character, selflessness and more who love this community and this nation.

An arrest warrant has been issued for a man suspected of murdering a Kaua‘i woman more than 15 years ago.

On June 23, 2010, 57-year-old Kapa‘a woman Amber Jackson was reported missing. Her body was found 10 days later in a forested area of Keālia, north of Kapa‘a, dead of blunt-force trauma to the head.

While there was not sufficient evidence at the time to connect any suspects to the case, the Kaua‘i Police Department announced Tuesday that 57-year-old Gregory Glaser is sought for second-degree murder.

KPD announced that Glaser had been identified as a person of interest shortly after Jackson’s body was discovered, but without any real evidence, he was able to leave the island shortly thereafter.

“This has been a complex investigation, and our detectives, both past and present, have never stopped working to uncover the truth,” KPD Chief Kalani Ke said in a statement Tuesday.

According to KPD’s announcement, Glaser was last seen on Hawai‘i Island and is described as a Caucasian male about 5-foot-8-inches tall, about 160 pounds, with brownish-gray long hair, brown eyes and a dot tattoo on his abdomen.

Glaser pled no contest in 2024 to second-degree assault on the Big Island, and was sentenced to four years’ probation. That, and a 2014 criminal citation for disorderly conduct in Kaua‘i court, is the extent of his criminal record in Hawai‘i.

“For more than 15 years, this case has remained a priority for investigators who never stopped working on behalf of Amber Jackson,” said prosecuting attorney Rebecca Like in a statement, before adding that, notwithstanding the arrest warrant, Glaser is still presumed innocent until proven guilty.

“Moments like this remind us how deeply one loss can affect an entire community," said Mayor Derek Kawakami in a statement. "I’m deeply grateful for the continued work of the Kaua‘i Police Department and investigators who helped bring this case to this point, and we continue to keep Amber Jackson’s loved ones in our thoughts."
