Friday, Jan. 2

Fukubukuro. Participate in one of several annual Fukubukuro, or lucky bag, events across Oʻahu. Senior Reporter Stephanie Salmons put together a list of deals at Ala Moana Center, Ka Makana Ali‘i and more. Locations and times vary, Details.

‘Twas the Light Before Christmas on Ice. Enjoy the magic of the winter season with holiday music, festive decor and the new addition of an indoor ice-skating rink at ‘Twas the Light Before Christmas on Ice inside the Hawaiʻi Convention Center. Admission without access to the skating rink is $30 for adults and $20 for kids. Tickets with access to the rink are $40 for adults and $25 for kids. Senior, military and VIP tickets are also available. Parking at the Hawaiʻi Convention Center is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Open daily through Jan. 4. Details.

Crochet a lei. Learn how to make a crochet lei of pīkake or roselani flowers made from yarn. This workshop run by HouseMart Ben Franklin Crafts is designed for intermediate students who have already mastered basic stitches. The lei may not get completed in class, but students will learn the process so they can complete the project on their own. Supplies are included. Students must be teenagers, or older. The cost is $51.59. Details.

Tahitian Dance with Nalini. Join Nalini Gauthier, cofounder of Tahiti Mana and a creative director, costume designer and choreographer, as she teaches Tahitian dance. Classes start at noon and last an hour at the Waikīkī Community Center. Please arrive 15 minutes early to chat with the instructor before the class starts. The cost is $9. Details. 

Saturday, Jan. 3

Yoga nidra and sound bath. Grab a yoga mat and water and join this weekly class featuring yoga nidra and guided meditation. The drop-in class at the Waikīkī Community Center starts at 1 p.m. and lasts about an hour. The cost of the class is $15. Details.

Mat pilates with Marluz Tagaro. Sculpt, tone, and improve flexibility with Marluz Tagaro at the Waikīkī Community Center. The class starts at noon and runs for about a half hour. The cost is $7. Details.

Lauhala bracelets with Leialoha Mahuka. Create a lauhala bracelet with Weaver and Cultural Practicioner Leialoha Mahuka. The workshop is part of Waikīkī Community Center’s Hawaiian Culture Experience Program and is sponsored by Hawai‘i Tourism Authority’s Kūkulu Ola Program. Materials are provided. Each student will make one bracelet. Doors open at 10:15 a.m. Limited to 16 students. The cost of the class is $12.51. Details.

Sunday, Jan. 4

Da Hui Backdoor Shootout. This invitation-only surf contest on the North Shore features surfers from Hawai’i and around the world. It is held in honor of Duke Kahanamoku. The holding period for the contest runs from Jan. 4-16. Details.
