Hundreds of pages of Portuguese immigration records from the late 1800s onward will be publicly available in digital form.

The Consulate General of Portugal in San Francisco has donated scanned copies of its consular records to the Hawai‘i State Archives, including arrival data of all Portuguese citizens in the state between 1878 and 1934.

Honolulu Councilman and Honorary Consul for Portugal Tyler Dos Santos-Tam told Aloha State Daily that his predecessor in the Consul role, John Henry Felix, died in 2025. Shortly afterward, Felix’s son reached out to Santos-Tam about several aged record books in his late father’s possession.

“They were these dusty old books, they had clearly been waterlogged at some point,” Santos-Tam said. “I asked the folks in Lisbon what we should do with them … and they said they would like them back.”

But, Santos-Tam said, Portuguese officials agreed to scan the records and donate them to the state, allowing Hawaiʻi residents with Portuguese ancestry to learn more about their family histories.

Filipe Ramalheira, Consul General for Portugal in San Francisco, visited the State Archives on Friday to sign the documents officially authorizing the transfer of the immigration data, which included a registration book of Portuguese citizens, passport booklets, tax accounts, deeds and powers of attorney and more.

Santos-Tam said his own great-great grandfather is included in the records, as are the three immigrants credited as the first makers of ʻukulele, José do Espírito Santo, Augusto Dias and Manuel Nunes.

The records differ from Portugal’s own departure records, Santos-Tam said: stowaways and children born en route wouldn’t have been recorded when leaving Europe.

Also included in the records are the names of specific villages and parishes in Portugal and its colonies from whence immigrants originated, their professions, their traveling companions, and, in some cases, surviving photographs.

“There might be some surprises in there, too,” Santos-Tam said. He explained that one of the ʻukelele makers was recorded in the logs as arriving unmarried, yet in the company of a woman with children, potentially hinting at some minor 19th-Century scandal.

Santos-Tam added that, previously unbeknownst to him, his great-great-grandfather’s niece (in other words, his cousin three times removed) traveled to Hawai‘i years later.

“So there might be a whole other set of Santos-Tams here,” Santos-Tam said. “We thought we were the only ones.”

The documents are not yet publicly available, but they will be published and freely viewable via the 

. Santos-Tam said the Archives will work to make the documents searchable in the future, but for the time being, users will need to pore through the records page-by-page, so an eye for cursive handwriting and the Portuguese language is advised.

Meanwhile, users can also browse the State Archives for hundreds of thousands of other records the division 

, including genealogical records and land holding data.

Around-the-clock traffic adjustments are coming to Kamehameha Highway and Dillingham Boulevard as construction of the Skyline rail progresses.

In the coming weeks, HART, or the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation — the public transit authority responsible for planning and building the rail system for the City and County of Honolulu — and Tutor Perini Corp., its contractor for the City Center Guideway and Stations, or CCGS, project, will implement a revised traffic plan for the roadways, beginning with a section of road between Middle Street and Pu‘uhale Road.

The traffic adjustments will be in place 24/7 from March 2026 through December 2030.

HART says that as work along Kamehameha Highway and Dillingham Boulevard moves from utility relocation to guideway and station construction, “traffic plans will be adjusted to accommodate the work.”

“For this first section, between Middle Street and Pu‘uhale Road, one travel lane in each direction will remain open on the mauka side of the street, with barriers installed to safely separate the construction zone from the travel lanes, and the current left turn restrictions will remain in place,” HART notes. “Driveway modifications may be needed, however access to all properties will be maintained.

The Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, an Autograph Collection property on Hawai‘i Island’s Kohala Coast, has unveiled a new $180 million-plus renovation it says is the “most extensive transformation in the property’s 60-year history.”

The renovation, which spans both the hotel’s Main Tower and Beachfront Wing, includes 252 “fully reimagined” guest rooms and suites, along with a refreshed family resort pool with a new oceanfront hot tub and five private cabanas, a recent announcement noted.

Additions throughout both wings include handcrafted textiles, ceiling fans and plantation shutters, bedside lighting control panels, glass lānai doors, bathrooms with deep soaking tubs and more.

There’s also a new oceanfront wellness retreat with a state-of-the-art, 2,500-square-foot fitness center and an adults-only infinity lap pool along with refreshed public spaces with a curated gallery from the Rockefeller Art Collection.

According to the hotel, photovoltaic solar panels that supply about 45% of the resort’s overall electrical energy needs have also been added.

Other enhancements include the redesign of the Mauna Kea Golf Course by Robert Trent Jones Jr., the opening of the 28,000-square-foot 

, upgraded in-room amenities, and updates to the hotel’s restaurants, the announcement notes.

, for example, is a “re-concepting” of the resort’s beachfront dining venue, the announcement notes. Its lunch menu will include items like salads, burgers and Baja-style fish tacos, and evenings will feature contemporary regional Mexican dishes.

 restaurant also received a “refresh and introduced a new hyper garden-to-table menu” the hotels says is centered on local and seasonal ingredients that come from Big Island farmers, fishermen, ranchers and the resort’s new ‘Ulu Garden.

And coming this spring is The Spa at Mauna Kea, which will offer 11 treatment rooms, purification gardens, steam and sauna facilities, a pool and more.

“This renovation was always part of our long-term vision for Mauna Kea Beach Hotel,” hotel manager Kansas Henderson said in a statement provided to ASD. “Plans for the transformation were already underway prior to the [Covid-19] pandemic, and while it understandably paused our timeline, it did not pause our commitment. 

“As travel resumed around the globe, ownership recognized it was the right time to bring this long-planned vision to life, honoring our responsibility to preserve the hotel’s historic legacy and its culturally significant art collection while delivering the elevated and unforgettable experience today’s guests expect. The timing ultimately reflects both commitment and responsibility, ensuring Mauna Kea continues to create lasting memories for generations to come.”

Henderson says that on average, the hotel hosts approximately 25,000 visitors each year.

Mauna Kea Beach Hotel opened with 154 rooms in July 1965.

“It was while swimming in the turquoise waters of Kauna‘oa Bay, surrounded by a vast landscape of lava rock and ranchland with clear views of Maunakea’s summit, that American conservationist and venture capitalist Laurance S. Rockefeller decided to build Hawai‘i Island’s first resort,” a history on the 

. “His inspiration to capture the spirit of this special place and ensure the hotel conformed to, rather than intruded upon, these beautiful natural surroundings, became today’s Mauna Kea Beach Hotel.

Its $15 million build-out made the hotel the most expensive hotel ever built at the time, the site states. Room rates started at $43 per night and included breakfast and dinner. The hotel expanded in 1968 with the Beachfront Wing and has undergone other renovations over the years.

Mauna Kea Beach Hotel shares 1,839 oceanfront acres with The Westin Hapuna Beach Resort and Mauna Kea Residences, which together form the Mauna Kea Resort.

New University of Hawai‘i beach volleyball head coach 

 has decided to throw himself and his team into the fire immediately. 

The Rainbow Wahine will begin their 2026 season, as well as the Alvarez era, at the 

Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic at Queen's Beach in Waikīkī. The 'Bows will play two contests a day from Thursday to Saturday. All six of their opponents are ranked in the 

AVCA Collegiate Beach preseason poll top 10, including No. 1 UCLA, their second opponent on Thursday, as well as No. 2 Stanford, the team's second opponent on Friday. Hawai‘i, by comparison, is currently No. 16. 

"For us as a coaching staff and as players, I mean, this is why you play collegiate sports, is to play this (caliber of competition)," Alvarez said. "All in one weekend I think is going to be a bear, but I think for us, I wouldn't want it any different. 

"We already have scheduled 2027 and it's the same event because we have the best weather. People want to play at Queen's, so we're always going to have this kind of event. So, it's up to us to kind of rise to the occasion. I know we will. And I think through the years, Hawai‘i is always going to be a destination for beach programs to come. We want to be at the level where we can compete against them. And through my years here, we've had great success. ... We're hoping to continue that."

Beach volleyball is a relatively new sport in the collegiate realm. The NCAA has only held championships for the sport since 2016. With its natural association with beaches and love for volleyball as a state, Alvarez believes there is unlimited potential for the University of Hawai‘i to thrive in the sport. Yet, the Rainbow Wahine have never won a national championship, though they have made seven of nine NCAA Tournaments. 

In 2025, the Rainbow Wahine went 14-21, missing the NCAA Tournament, leading the school to move on from former coach Evan Silberstein.

When the University of Hawai‘i selected 

 as its next athletics director, the beach volleyball head coach post was still vacant. Elliott was tasked with making his first hire and chose Alvarez, a 1993 graduate of the school who was also the first assistant coach in program history from 2011 to 2019. 

"Obviously it's an honor. I guess, a little bit of pressure, too, to be his first hire," Alvarez said with a laugh. "Want to do great, but really, the relationship's been great. They've been open. We're 

, a lot of the teams are adding scholarships. He's been real open to us trying to get a little more money, trying to add scholarships, being very supportive of some of the things we want to do. He's been great. I mean, the nice thing about it is that I can go right into his office or text him and get a response, and he also just really believes in the program."

Alvarez, an O‘ahu native, returned to his alma mater because he wanted to bring the program back to being one of the country's top teams. After the first weekend, he'll get a sense of how close to the Rainbow Wahine are. 

"We got a great group, a lot of seniors and redshirt juniors, a lot of grad students, very veteran group," Alvarez said. "It's been kind of a long training process, but I think we're ready to play other people than ourselves.

"You come to University of Hawai‘i to win championships. We're trying to be as good as we can be. We have talent. I've coached here for nine years in the past, and the talent is very similar to what we've had. But we got to put it together. We got to play well. I've got to do a little bit of coaching. The players have to come together. But very excited about the team."

Architect Francis Oda, one of the founders of G70, died Feb. 14 surrounded by family, including wife Caroline and children Reid and Nalani. He was 84.

His work helped shape Hawai‘i’s built environment and reflected his deep respect for culture, community and place,” G70 says. “Over the course of his career, he mentored generations of professionals whose work continues to reflect his values of excellence, humility and service.”

Born and raised in Hawai‘i, Oda made his first trip to the Mainland in 1959 to study architecture at Cornell University, according to the university’s 

“At the time, no one in his family had ever visited the contiguous U.S. and jetliner travel wasn’t available,” the write-up notes. “It took Oda five days just to reach the Cornell campus.”

He received a Bachelor of Architecture from Cornell and a Doctor of Architecture from the University of Hawai‘i, where he was a “distinguished alumnus” and helped develop the Doctor of Architecture program, G70 noted.

Oda also was an adjunct associate professor at the UH School of Architecture.

According to G70, Oda received more than 50 design awards throughout his career, including the American Institute of Architects Honor Award for Our Divine Savior Church in Chico, California.

 His award-winning projects include the Four Seasons Lodge at Koele, the Four Seasons Mānele Bay Hotel, Hanauma Bay Nature Center and the Nanea Golf Clubhouse

He also helped envision master plans and design guidelines for the city of Kapolei, the UH Long Range Development Program, Kanu o ka ‘Āina and Kamehameha Schools Kaiaulu o Kaka’ako Masterplan

, and designed several international projects in French Polynesia, Mauritius and Canada, the firm noted.

Oda was a fellow of the American Institute of Architects, a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners, designated a Mānoa Forum Fellow by UH, received the 

 and was inducted into the Hawai‘i Business Hall of Fame.

, the 2026 president of AIA Honolulu, the Honolulu chapter of the American Institute for Architects, and an associate principal at G70, told Aloha State Daily in an email that Hawai‘i has lost "one of its most influential voices in Francis Oda."

"I remember sitting with Francis a few years ago — he asked us what we were dreaming about. Not what we were working on. Not what our goals were. What we were dreaming. Then he asked about our reality. He understood that balance — between the possible and the present — and that is what stays with me," Hirai says.

"For Hawaiʻi's architectural community, he was one of a kind. He identified early on that our profession carries a unique responsibility — to place, to culture, to the people who experience what we design. You see it in the buildings he left behind across these Islands and beyond. You see it in the culture he built at G70. And you see it in the people he mentored — who are now doing the same for others.

"As AIA Honolulu president, that question still challenges me — what are we dreaming about? What could our profession look like if the next generation had people willing to push their thinking the way Francis pushed ours?"

"A recipient of the Foundation’s Gordon W. Bradley Humanitarian Award, Francis was recognized for his far-reaching leadership and enduring contributions to Hawaiʻi’s civic and cultural life. Elevated to Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, he embodied professional excellence and principled leadership. Through award-winning architecture, visionary master planning, and dedication to architectural education, he strengthened Hawaiʻi’s built environment and the profession. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations."

In addition to his work, Oda was also a senior pastor and board chair of New Life Church Honolulu and served as global chair of Transform Our World.

A celebration of life service is set for Saturday, April 25, at First Assembly of God — Red Hill, Moanalua.
