The week ahead in Hawai‘i sports: Tournament time for basketball

Multiple teams across multiple levels will play to keep their postseason hopes alive this week.

Tournament time has begun in the collegiate basketball world.

Both University of Hawai‘i basketball teams will compete in the Big West Conference Tournament, which begins on Wednesday in Henderson, Nev. The Rainbow Wahine will play in Thursday's quarterfinals at 9 a.m. HST against the winner of Wednesday's game between Cal State Fullerton and Cal State Northridge.

A year after not making the eight-team tournament field, the Hawai‘i men's basketball team is in the conference tournament semifinals after earning a double bye. The Rainbow Warriors will play either Cal State Northridge, UC Davis or UC Santa Barbara on Friday at 5:30 p.m. HST.

Meanwhile, the Hawai‘i Pacific men's basketball team was selected to the NCAA Division II Tournament for the first time since 2017. The Sharks (18-11) earned an at-large bid in the West Region, where they will face 2 seed Saint Martin's at a time to be determined on Saturday.

Other UH sports

The UH men's volleyball team will host the OUTRIGGER Invitational this week, taking on Mount Olive, Lewis and UCLA, respectively, from Thursday to Saturday. All of UH's matches will begin at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased here. The Hawai‘i women's volleyball team has spring exhibitions against Louisville on Monday and Tuesday, both at 7 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Following a Tuesday home midweek game against Chaminade, UH's baseball team will embark on a two-week Big West road trip, starting with a series at Long Beach State that runs from Friday to Sunday.

Local PacWest teams

Hawai‘i Pacific's baseball team has a four-game series against Westmont consisting of doubleheaders at Hans L'Orange Park on Friday and Saturday. The action on both days begins at 2 p.m. Hawai‘i Pacific's softball team has a road series at Concordia with doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday.

Chaminade's baseball team will have a midweek game against the University of Hawai‘i on Tuesday at Les Murakami Stadium. First pitch begins at 6:35 p.m. The Silverswords will then have a four-game home series against Menlo that begins on Friday and ends on Thursday. Meanwhile, Chaminade's softball teams will have a pair of noon doubleheaders against Dominican on Wednesday and Thursday.

Hawai‘i-Hilo's baseball team has 3 p.m. doubleheaders against Vanguard on Monday and Tuesday before a road series at Azusa Pacific that begins on Saturday. UHH's softball team has a three-game road series with Azusa Pacific that begins on Tuesday, as well as a pair of road doubleheaders at Biola on Friday and Saturday.
