Makiki residents are invited to share their ideas for traffic safety improvements at a community meeting planned for Tuesday, Aug. 18.
The City and Council of Honolulu Department of Transportation Services and Honolulu Complete Streets will host the first event of the Honolulu Safer Streets project.
The meeting, which starts at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Makiki District Park's first floor auditorium, will focus on Wilder Avenue between Pensacola and Punahou Street and upper Piʻikoi between Lunalilo and Pensacola Street, according to a news release. The public are invited to provide feedback on areas that need improvement and roadway changes, including lane reconfiguration, crosswalk safety enhancements, bus stop amenities, bicycle facilities, dedicated left-turn lanes and traffic signal adjustments.
South King Street, Beretania Street, Young Street, Kapiʻolani Boulevard, Wilder Avenue, Piʻikoi Street, and Kāheka Street were identified by crash analysis as Oʻahuʻs highest-crash corridors in preparation for the Oʻahu Pedestrian Plan and the Oʻahu Vision Zero Action Plan.
"Although they comprise only a small portion of the island’s roadway network, they account for a disproportionate number of serious injury and fatal crashes. As busy urban streets, they serve thousands of pedestrians, bicyclists, transit riders and motorists daily, while providing critical connections to schools, employment centers, commercial areas, and other major destinations," the news release stated.
The Transportation Department and Honolulu Complete Streets will hold public meetings later this year for the other project corridors.
