The University of Hawai‘i football team suffered a 37-27 road loss at Stanford to begin its 2026 season on Saturday afternoon.
Stagnant for three quarters, the Rainbow Warriors trailed 23-7 heading into the fourth quarter. But a miraculous 20-0 run, capped by a 29-yard touchdown reception by Devon Rice, gave the Rainbow Warriors a 27-23 lead with 4:06 remaining.
Stanford took the lead back with a 2-yard Micah Ford rushing touchdown with 1:41 remaining. After getting the ball back, Hawai‘i quarterback Micah Alejado fumbled, and the ball was returned by Punahou alumnus Tevarua Tafiti for a 31-yard touchdown to effectively seal the game with 1:12 remaining.
Offensively, Alejado completed 30 of his 50 pass attempts for 269 yards and two touchdowns and didn't turn the ball over until Tafiti's deciding score. Slot receiver Tama Uiliata had a game-high eight receptions for 62 yards and a touchdown, while Rice had 35 rushing yards on 11 carries and an additional score.
For Stanford, Micah Ford had 99 yards on 25 carries with three touchdowns to carry the Cardinal offense.
A combination of questionable calls and special teams miscues contributed to the loss for the Rainbow Warriors. Stanford went up 16-7 in the third quarter on a blocked punt, while a blocked Sean Olvera-Harle extra point kept the 'Bows at 27 points on their final score. Meanwhile, a review in the first quarter negated a Titan Lacaden reception. Replay appeared to show Lacaden getting pushed out of bounds before making a first down catch, though officials did not acknowledge the shove by a Stanford defender.
Additionally, a Stanford catch that appeared to be made out of bounds on its winning drive was not reversed after review.
Defensively, safety Kona Moore had a game-high 14 tackles for Hawai‘i, including two for loss. For Stanford, Tafiti had a pass breakup in addition to his touchdown.
If Hawai‘i's had held its late lead, it would have counted for the program's first true power conference road victory since a 1994 win at California. Moreover, the 16-point fourth quarter comeback would have been the largest in program history.
The Rainbow Warriors will return home and host UNLV on Sept. 5. Kickoff at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex is set for 4 p.m. The game is deemed a "whiteout," where fans are encouraged to wear white.
