A brother-sister duo, originally from O‘ahu, have brought the taste of the Islands to the Big Apple, recently opening their third L&L Hawaiian Barbecue location in New York City.

Franchisees Henry and Sephra Engel already have locations in Manhattan's Lower East Side and East Harlem but opened their third restaurant in Brooklyn on March 20.

Born and raised in Honolulu, Henry Engel told Aloha State Daily that he's been in technology for his whole professional career — up until "taking a little twist here to the restaurant space."

Engel, who is chief revenue officer at Superorder, a restaurant technology company, says that's how he got into the restaurant world. Because of that, he became close with the L&L team "on a technology partnership side of things."

"And obviously, I had strong ties to back home. Grew up eating plate lunch and L&L all the time. Now I'm here in New York City with my sister. ... We were just wanting plate lunch. There's no opportunity to get that here, so we thought maybe we'd take a leap into that."

When asked why they decided on franchising with L&L, Engel lists his reasons.

"I'm a believer in being passionate about what you do, and I'm totally passionate about chicken katsu and loco mocos," he said with a laugh. "So No. 1 is just our level of familiarity with the food. It's our comfort foods that we grew up on."

No. 2, he says, was the opportunity to bring something like L&L to a city like New York, "where, for some reason, there's so many different types of food here, but not much of a presence for Hawaiian barbecue. We kind of saw that as an opportunity."

And No. 3, he says CEO Elisia Flores and the L&L team as a whole, are "fantastic, and they're a true representation of what it looks like to bring the Hawai‘i and aloha spirit culture into the restaurant business world."

There was a lot of hype around the opening of the siblings' first location, Engel says.

"It was highly anticipated," he said. "When we actually had our grand opening at our first store, I think someone started camping out there, waiting at 8 a.m. We don't open until 11 — and it was cold! I mean, it was like 40 degree-weather. So it was highly anticipated and it was pretty bonkers in the beginning in a good way. Every location since has been really exciting for us. The community, the different areas and online have just been really supportive and excited about it."

Henry and Sephra first moved to New York City together in 2018 and have been "in and out over the past few years."

He says he and his sister are "extremely close" and always dreamt of and wanted to start a business together.

"We're very complementary, where I'm very much the one that's flying this plane and she's the one figuring out how to build it as we're flying."

Sephra, he says, runs the back office and does a lot of their tech implementation, while Henry looks for the deals and the real estate, helps build the tech stack and focuses on marketing.

Engel is quick to respond when he's asked what his favorite item is on L&L Hawaiian Barbecue menu.

"Oh, easily the loco moco." On a recent visit to the new location, he says, "I didn't even have to tell the team what I was ordering because it's like an inside joke now."

Blythe Yamamoto, director of franchise sales for L&L, told Aloha State Daily that the company aims to hit 500 stores by 2032.

"We just want to spread more aloha around, share the Hawaiian culture — so that's our goal," she said.

In addition to the Engels' store in Brooklyn, L&L also recently announced the opening of a location in Smyrna, Georgia — its fifth in the Peach State — and one in Benicia, California, bringing the total number locations worldwide to 236.

"We have not gone out and recruited anybody. They are usually friends or family of our franchisees. They are all long-time patrons of L&L. A lot of them grew up in Hawai‘i or California, and as they were growing up, L&L was part of their family. They would have dinners there, and as they got older, they decided, 'You know, I would love to share that with my community that [I'm] in now.' That's kind of what happens."

Yamamoto says she's working with someone who grew up in Hawai‘i but whose husband is from Georgia to open an L&L location in Mulberry, Georgia.

This year, though, Yamamoto says L&L is "trying a little harder" by going to franchise expos, for example.

"We're showing them what we are and ... hopefully find people in certain areas," she says. "We are handcuffed as far as where we're going to open, because we need to find somebody who's willing to open in that area because we do not have corporately owned stores. All those stores are franchised-owned, so it's finding that right person, finding that right place."

For example, Yamamoto says L&L was in Tennessee, but the franchisee decided to close. But there's another ready to move into that area.

"We're looking at Boise, [Idaho], which is going to be new for us. Indiana. So we are hitting new territories, but it is really tied to us finding that person who's interested in opening."

The business started as L&L Dairy back in 1952. Eddie Flores Jr. and Johnson Kam acquired L&L in 1976 and turned into a plate lunch diner.

Sterling Carvalho is out as the head coach of the 

News of Carvalho's ouster was first reported by the Honolulu-Star Advertiser's Billy Hull.

In a letter to Kahuku parents and students, Kahuku High School principal Donna Lindsey wrote in part that "plans are in place to ensure continued support and stability for out student-athletes and football program. An interim head coach will be assigned while we begin the process of selecting a new head coach." 

A reason was not provided for Carvalho's departure from the Kahuku football program in the letter.  

Carvalho, who also serves a bishop when he is not coaching, was named head coach for the Kahuku football team in January 2018 following stints as the team's offensive coordinator, as well as the head coach of the junior varsity team. He replaced Makoa Fretias, who went 11-2 as the program's interim head coach after Vavae Tata's exit in February 2017. 

In six full seasons at the helm, Carvalho went 59-18, leading the Red Raiders to the HHSAA Open Division championship game in each of his last five seasons. 

After the 2020 high school season was wiped out due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Carvalho turned Kahuku into a dominant force in the Hawai‘i prep football scene, leading the Red Raiders to three straight state titles, something that had previously never been done in the program's storied history. 

Carvalho's signature win as Kahuku's head coach came on Sept. 16, 2023, when the Red Raiders stunned defending national champion St. John Bosco of California 30-23. 

Kahuku's quest for a fourth straight state title was halted with a 17-10 loss to Saint Louis in the 2024 HHSAA Open Division championship game last November. 

Carvalho's twin brother, Stewart, served as Kahuku's special teams coordinator during Sterling's tenure with the team. 

Sterling Carvalho coached the Hawai‘i consensus Player of the Year for consecutive years in Kainoa "Kaikai" Carvalho, Stewart's son, in 2021, followed by Liona Lefau in 2022. Kainoa Carvalho will join the University of Hawai‘i football team in the summer following a church mission, while Lefau is a third-year linebacker at the University of Texas. 

Sterling Carvalho and Lindsey did not respond to messages from Aloha State Daily requesting comment on Wednesday.

If you've been following the news today, you've seen headlines that the stock market totally tanked following Pres. Donald Trump's unveiling of reset tariffs on foreign goods. These headlines are illustrated with charts of stock prices that look like 

 box office returns — dropping like a rock. Here's a screen capture of New York Times, where investors, we're told, are "jolted:"

Here's the New York Post, which, while presenting a fairly optimistic take compared to other media, still has an alarming graph:

And as I'm writing this I see the Honolulu Star-Advertiser has just sent out a breaking news blast, carrying a Reuters article titled, "Recession fears send Dow plunging 1,600 points in market selloff." 

You have to scroll down to the eighth paragraph of the article to find that this plunging 1,600-point sell-off represents a 3.98% dip to 40,542.71.

I'm not here today to talk about Trump's tariffs, or whether they're good or bad. I'm actually here to talk about my industry — the news media, and the way it uses true information in misleading ways to generate extreme emotion in readers, and lead them to unwarranted conclusions. This is usually done by leaving out context, and by focusing on the past five minutes. 

If you shorten your time horizon enough, it's absolutely true that stocks plunged, plummeted, tumbled, crashed, whatever verb you think applies to, say, the S&P average over the past five days. I mean, just look at it:

Terrible! But back up. This is what it looks like over the past five years, including today's performance:

Do your feelings about the story change when you see the bigger picture? It's true, stock prices plunged, today. It's also true they plunged down to ... one of the highest points of the past five years. So who gets helped, and who gets hurt, by these editorial decisions to present only the five-day view?

How are the stock prices of some of Hawai‘i largest public companies faring? Let's take that five-year look at a few of them, from different sectors. Here's First Hawaiian Bank:

Again, I don't know where stocks will go, or how this tariff realignment will play out. What I do know is that the evidence my industry has put in front of our faces today to create the impression that it's a disaster is highly skewed toward short-term panic.

It’s prime lunch time — around 12:15 p.m. — but thankfully, the line at newly opened 

The new Downtown Honolulu bento shop soft opened last week with a limited menu, but there are still sufficient options to choose from. Fun fact: The team from now-closed Okonomiyaki Chibo Restaurant is the team behind Oide Kitchen. While the former Waikīkī eatery specialized in okonomiyaki and grilled teppanyaki dishes, this new spot focuses on grab-and-go bento.

“‘Oide’ means ‘welcome’ in Japanese,” says John Higa, one of the managers, who explains that the business’s logo includes the lucky cat.

Bento options range from garlic chicken ($12) and steak don ($20) to chicken nanban ($15), garlic shrimp ($14.50) and salmon ($15). The ‘ahi katsu bento ($14) is one of the most popular orders — so popular that the shop is already sold out during the time of my visit.

The steak don, loco moco and fresh ‘ahi poke don ($13) are all made to order. The loco moco with homemade gravy is a hearty, filling option — and that savory gravy is a winner.

“It’s fresh hamburger; we don’t use frozen patties,” Higa confirms. “We also use Kubota rice.”

The bento shop also offers sides like potato salad ($4) — which comes highly recommended — dashimaki tamago ($7) and edamame ($3). The menu gradually expand to include more dishes, according to Higa.

For John Condrey, the supervising project manager of the recent back-of-house capital improvements to the Neal S. Blaisdell Concert Hall, which cost $10 million, this is just one of many projects he has completed that are in the public eye. 

Condrey works for the facilities division of the department of design and construction for the City and County of Honolulu. 

"From the design profession side, the beauty is that you’re working for your neighbors,” he said. “We're producing something that's significant, that benefits the community.”

Condrey has a background in architecture and project management for large-scale commercial projects and joined the city 12 years ago. 

The recent renovations aim to make the performing arts space safer for workers and bring it up to the level of other performing arts spaces across the nation, according to employees of the City and County of Honolulu, which operates the facility. 

The renovations included significant lighting and electrical upgrades, refurbished seats as well as upgrades to the backstage dressing rooms and the addition of a now mechanized fire curtain, which can come down between the audience and the stage in the event of a fire backstage.

 Neal S. Blaisdell Center, located on the corner of King Street and Kapiʻolani Boulevard, which includes a multi-purpose arena, an exhibition hall, the concert hall, meeting rooms and a parking structure.

“It feels good to have a renovated space that you can share with people who worked in the building on and off — especially sort of resident companies, like the symphony and opera and ballet,” Elizabeth Ishihara, the productions manager for the Neal S. Blaisdell Center and Waikīkī Shell, told Aloha State Daily. “They have a very specific idea of what the space looks like, and it's kind of cool every time that new group comes in for them to be like: ‘Wow! This looks great!’ ” 

More renovations are in the works. Phase 1 Project C of the upgrades will cost an 

, according to documents with filed with the Hawai’i Awards & Notices Data System. It includes irrigation, lights for the exterior of the building and the removal of a wall of mirrors in the front lobby so existing artwork on the sides of the building can be moved into that space, Condrey explained. Originally, the deadline for bids was March 31, but it was extended to April 2. Currently, there are 11 interested vendors. 

“Our next step is to improve the exterior,” Condrey said. “The biggest part of this project is a brand new irrigation system because the existing one is failing. It is totally failed on one side already.”

“It’s failing on this side,” he said, pointing to another irrigation area shown on a poster with project plans. “Hopefully, we get to redo the front plaza to make it more friendly when they need to do some kind of user event out there. And then [add lights to] the building. The buidling has lots of lights around it but no architectural lighting. This project is currently out to bid and we’re hoping that this fall we can start construction.”

[{"text":"Everything was trending towards 2024 being Spyros Chakas' year. ","type":"text"}]

The star outside hitter was the latest elite international men's volleyball player to make his way to the University of Hawai‘i and embrace the Islands as much as it embraced him over the course of his college career. It's why he turned down pro overtures following his sophomore and junior seasons.

"You get offers, but it wasn't something that was enough for me to persuade me to leave Hawai‘i, and honestly, it would take a lot to get me out of Hawai‘i. I was having such a good time with my teammates, my friends in the islands, that I don't think that I would have given up on it," Chakas recently recalled to Aloha State Daily. "Especially after my third year, I've done three years of it. I might as well finish."

Chakas entered his senior year as the star player, floor captain and unquestioned leader for the Rainbow Warriors, who had won national titles in 2021 and 2022 and finished national runners-up in 2023. 

After a team trip to Japan in the fall, the stage was set for Chakas to have a memorable senior season. The 'Bows were considered among the teams in the mix for national title contention, while Chakas was one of the preseason favorites for national player of the year. 

"I was feeling really good going into that season. We had such a good time going to Japan, bonding as a team, and then just playing some really good volleyball. That was a great experience," said Chakas, the Most Outstanding Player in the 2022 NCAA Tournament. "The year started really well, and then going into the season, I was feeling probably my best physically that I felt my four years in Hawai‘i."

[{"text":"Then March 10 happened, and Chakas' college career was suddenly over. ","type":"text"}]

In the fifth set of an intense championship match of the Outrigger Volleyball Invitational, a ball was for set for Chakas, which he swung straight into the UC Irvine block. He landed on his left leg and immediately went down, clutching his left knee. The Stan Sheriff Center crowd of 6,923 went silent. 

The Rainbow Warriors went on to win the match, and Chakas won MVP of the tournament. Following the match, Chakas' teammates went to the training room to check in on him. He knew something was off immediately, but it wasn't confirmed until the next day. 

Chakas went home and was only able to sleep for about an hour before heading to the hospital for a 7 a.m. MRI, which revealed a full ACL tear, a third degree MCL tear and a first degree meniscus tear. Chakas had to wait an additional 10 days to get surgery to allow the swelling to go down. 

From there, a laborious rehabilitation process — both mentally and physically — ensued. His first physical therapy session took place the day after surgery. 

"That was pretty intense, learning how to live with crutches. The first month and a half being stuck in bed, only getting up to go to the toilet was an interesting time," he recalled with a grin.

During UH's five-set win over UC Santa Barbara on March 30, Chakas was part of the starting lineup as the second libero and sat on the bench, a respite from the early recovery stages he was facing at home. 

The Rainbow Warriors went 5-5 in Big West play without Chakas, falling to UC Irvine in the conference semifinals before missing the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2018. 

In exchanging injury stories with others, Chakas realized his wasn't painful as others he had talked to, although he faced a long road ahead to get to where he once was.

As for his pro prospects, a team in Germany that was prepared to negotiate with Chakas after the season ended withdrew their interest following the injury. 

"I saw it all as a lesson, because it was not that I could control whether I got injured or not," he said. "I could only control how I dealt with it. And I think I did a pretty decent job controlling it and learning through it."

Chakas expressed gratitude towards the athletic training staff at UH. With Raiki Miyazato, he was able to learn to slowly get off his crutches and stand on his two feet again, supplemented with workouts at the pool. Meanwhile, strength coach Josh Elms introduced Chakas to leg exercises with the goal of not letting his leg atrophy. Chakas says in the early stages of rehab, his left leg was "skinny as hell."

The countless hours in bed allowed Chakas to self-reflect and learn more about himself. He even watched the fateful match against UC Irvine in which he suffered the injury. 

"I was rewatching the game against Irvine that I got hurt, and then I was watching how tense I was and how hard I was playing. I was like, OK, maybe I need to calm down a little bit sometimes. That was an important lesson," Chakas said. "Getting hurt obviously wasn't great for me or for the team. I believe that we could have done way better. But that doesn't take away the effort that the boys put in after I got hurt. I was really proud to watch them battle every game out, play their hearts out. ... Overall, not the way that I wanted it to go, but there's good things to keep from that season."

Teammates and coaches would frequently visit Chakas, making him plates from the team's postgame spread. Thousands from around the volleyball world messaged him, wishing him well in the recovery process. But when he was left to his own devices, that's when Chakas grew the most as a person.

"The physical part, you get used to it because you don't really have a choice. It's the mental part that you grow up a lot, because you just learn to face adversity in a different way, because it takes something away from you that you're used to doing for so many years. I played volleyball for so many years, and it's what I enjoy to do. So when that is being taken away from you, you just need to find other things to do," Chakas said. "For example, my enjoyment from music grew even more. I still remember being on crutches, and I'll go to (former teammate) Max Rosenfeld's house, and we would just make music together, and we'll just have good times. 

"That would be something that would distract me from my injury or any other issues that might have occurred. You find out so many more things about yourself, because you're not only focused on playing volleyball or winning games. There's so many other sides that you discover. I think that's the main thing that I keep from from this process: Just expanding my character and my interests as as a whole."

Chakas graduated from UH-Mānoa with a BA in psychology and then signed his first pro contract with AONS Milon in his native Greece, the same club team he played with as an amateur. With fond memories of the jam sessions he had with Rosenfeld, the first thing he bought after he landed in Athens was a drum set. 

Physical therapy for Chakas continued after moving back to Greece. After spending months working on his recovery, he began practicing with the team about 10 months following his injury. 

He returned to action on Feb. 19 — less than 11 months after surgery — and delivered five kills and four service aces against Hefestus Florinas. 

AONS Milon is currently in a best-of-five series in the Greek playoffs against Olympiacos, one of the most prominent multi-sport clubs in Greece. 

"It's rewarding," Chakas says of his return to the court. "There's some minor muscle issues that are pretty normal to occur after being out for so long, but I've been jumping well like I did before. I'm even stronger than I was before, so that's really encouraging." 

While the injury Chakas had against UC Irvine ended his season, it certainly didn't end his career. After enduring the hardest parts of the recovery process, he's eager to ascend up the pro ranks in Europe. 

"There's definitely goals in mind of where I want to go and where I want to play, but these goals won't achieve themselves," Chakas said. "I'm the one that has to be putting in the work every day if I want to achieve those goals. So, for example, if I want to go play in Italy, that will not happen if I just manifest or if I pray about it. I gotta actually put in the work. So, yeah, it's still a day by day process, trying to get a little better every day, whether that's physically, mentally or or both."

With a 12-hour time difference between Greece and Hawai‘i, Chakas said he's not able to watch as many matches live, but he'll watch them in full once they're uploaded on YouTube. He remains in touch with former teammates that are still in college, such as starting UH setter Tread Rosenthal and middle blocker Kurt Nusterer. He's hoping to visit the islands soon and show his friends some of the scenery, as well as reunite with poke bowls and spam musubi. 

"It's the best volleyball community I've ever seen in my life. People that actually care about the sport and love the sport and really, really good people that I came in contact with and made friends with over the years, and Hawai‘i is an amazing place itself. The Islands, the nature, the ocean, the mountains, it's something that I'll never forget, and I'll always want to come back to show my friends from here that I was living in Hawai‘i for four years. The food was pretty good, not gonna lie, some food that we don't have in this side of the world."

In the year since Chakas suffered his first major injury, he believes he's able to play at a high level again because of his short-term mentality. Have one good day at a time, and suddenly the starting point is a distant memory. 

"The first thing is that when adversity comes, you can't control what's going to happen to you, but you can control how you're going to deal with it," he said. "When I got injured, my initial thoughts, I was angry and sad and pissed about it. But then I realized that there's no point in me wasting energy in being emotional about it. But instead, I just gotta do my best to come back from it, go to PT, do my strengthening and all that. Just controlling the way that you come back from adversity, and not letting it get you stuck in a place where you don't want to be for a long time. 

"And then the second thing would be to take it day by day. I know that's a cliché, but when you're in a place like I said before, stuck in bed, not being able to get up, thinking long term is not really going to get you anywhere. You just gotta think like, 'OK, I'm gonna do this now.' I'm gonna do these things today to be better, feel better, and then get up the next morning and do the same things. I also had many messages from either kids that have gone through this injury or parents of kids that are going through these injuries. The messages that I would send to them was just be patient. Take it day by day, and be good on yourself. Love yourself."
