After spending nearly two decades sexually abusing girls in his care, former Punahou and youth basketball coach Dwayne Yuen will be behind bars until 2059.

Yuen pled guilty in 2024 to 12 counts of sex trafficking, producing and possessing child pornography and sexual coercion of minors. On Thursday, U.S. District Court Judge Michael Seabright sentenced him on six of those charges to 405 months in prison, a term about 33.75 years in length. 

“I realize this might be a life sentence,” Seabright said. “But it’s the right one.”

Seabright was uncompromising in his description of Yuen, calling him “a predator with a whistle” and casting doubt on any possibility of the man having the capacity to change his ways.

“I don’t think there’s been any defendant before me who I trust less [than you],” Seabright told Yuen, adding that he believes that if Yuen were set free today, he would attempt to prey on girls and young women again tomorrow.

Seabright’s contemptuous verdict came after several emotional firsthand accounts of Yuen’s abuse. Three of his victims — at least ten victims were anonymously identified in court documents — submitted letters to the court that were read aloud by prosecuting attorney Rebecca Perlmutter.

A fourth victim, former Punahou and University of Hawai‘i women's basketball standout Shawna-Lei Kuehu, spoke in person. Although she chose to stay anonymous in the courtroom, she spoke to a crowd of local media following the sentencing.  

“This man is a f***ing monster,” she told Seabright. “A monster who preys on the innocence of a child.”

Kuehu described how she initially met Yuen on a high school campus tour and how the coach inveigled his way into her family’s trust in order to target her. She said he gained her trust, gave her rides home and to school, plied her with gifts and became friendly with her family before subjecting her to abuse.

“He learned all the things that mattered to me, then held them hostage,” she said.

Kuehu went into graphic detail about Yuen’s sexual abuses and said that he ensured her silence through threats and blackmail.

Even when victims had escaped Yuen’s physical abuse, he continued to torment them with hundreds of texts and phone calls a day, many explicitly sexual in nature, constantly switching numbers and messaging services to circumvent blocks. Victims wrote about being monitored, with associates of Yuen keeping tabs on them, and Yuen himself spoofing numbers of victims’ close friends and family.

Other victims wrote about how Yuen’s abuse has continued to traumatize them for years afterward. One wrote that she couldn’t play basketball in college without needing to vomit beforehand, and another that she can no longer view any men who coach women’s basketball without suspicion.

“The charm, the gifts, the attention, the promises,” Perlmutter read from one letter. “It was not about affection, it was about power. The power to prey on the vulnerable.”

The testifiers all recommended strong sentences, and Perlmutter requested that Seabright go above and beyond the recommendations of a pre-sentencing report that advised between 27 and 33 years in prison. Perlmutter advocated for a 40-year sentence, saying that Yuen’s 20-year pattern of repeated abuse makes clear his high risk for recidivism if set free.

As evidence of his character, Perlmutter quoted Yuen’s own words to one of his victims in 2006: “You really think you can keep me from getting what I want?”

On the other hand, Yuen’s attorney Alen Kaneshiro requested a 15-year sentence, saying that a psychological evaluation of Yuen had indicated that he has an unknown neurological disorder that has left him with reduced emotional maturity.

Kaneshiro said Yuen on some level “conceived of himself and his players as peers,” and that he “texted [his victims] as a scorned teenage boy would.”

Kaneshiro also asked Seabright to consider Yuen’s non-abusive acts. For example, he said Yuen was an elementary school teacher, with apparently no reports of abuse.

But Kaneshiro also argued that another reason for leniency was Yuen’s willingness to “volunteer so much time coaching youth basketball,” an argument which drew hisses and murmurs from the gallery.

Yuen himself addressed the court and said he takes full responsibility for his actions.

“I was entrusted with a position of responsibility,” Yuen said. “I misused my position and people were hurt.”

Seabright later said he found Yuen’s statement “shallow” and “not truly remorseful.”

The judge also scoffed at Yuen’s defense that he has been in therapy between 2006 and 2021.

“It obviously didn’t work,” Seabright said. “I think it says a lot about your future dangerousness. I don’t think you can help yourself.”

Ultimately, Seabright said that while criminal sentences should take into account rehabilitation, another goal of sentencing is simple incapacitation: preventing a criminal from committing crimes again.

While Seabright saved his harshest words for Yuen, he noted that the system failed his victims, too. Punahou fired Yuen for sexual misconduct in 2004, and two Punahou girls’ basketball team members obtained restraining orders against him in 2006, but the state Department of Education still hired him in 2007.

Following the sentencing, the victims who chose to attend in person gathered together and debriefed, taking turns hugging each other. Some were in tears. 

"The years that we've been silenced and then with the years that he got with sentencing, yeah," said Kuehu when asked if she was satisfied with the length of Yuen's incarceration. 

Although she was initially apprehensive about speaking in person on Thursday, Kuehu ultimately felt empowerment while delivering her words. 

"I hesitated. I was very anxious about it, but when I got up there and finally found my voice and with the strong women and men that were behind this case, it was empowering," she said. "As I went through it, I definitely felt and found the strength to be able to continue.

"We're gonna go ahead and continue our lives and continue to empower youth and continue to protect those innocent, making sure we continue to be the change that we want to see."

The healing process has not been a linear one for victims like Keuhu, but she says Thursday's sentencing was "definitely a win in that healing process."

"But we just got to take it day by day," she said, "and this is a part of that healing process, and hopefully we can close the chapter and continue on and continue to be strong and go on with our lives from now, knowing that this chapter is closing, that it's behind us."

Construction of the third section of Honolulu's Skyline rail system has taken another step forward as transit officials ready for the second segment to open this fall.

A blessing and groundbreaking ceremony was held earlier this week at the future site of the 

Ka‘ākaukukui, or Civic Center, station in Kaka‘ako for the next phase of the project, the city center guideway and stations.

The CCGS project includes the construction of nearly three miles of elevated guideway and six rail stations, starting near the 

Kahauiki, or Middle Street Transit Center, station and ending at the the Civic Center station, just east of the intersection of Halekauwila and South streets, an announcement from HART, or 

the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation, noted. Construction is expected to be finished by 2030.

The first part of the work will begin in the Iwilei area and includes drilling shafts for the columns that will support the guideway, the announcement noted, adding that working hours will span from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and Saturdays as needed. HART officials say the hours, though, depend on where they're working.

HART — the public transit authority responsible for planning and building the rail system for the City and County of Honolulu —  

 for the design and construction of the CCGS project to Tutor Perini Corp. in August 2024.

CEO and Executive Director Lori Kahikina told Aloha State Daily Monday afternoon that reaching this point is "very meaningful for this team."

It's the second or third time that HART has tried to procure the last segment, she said, "and to finally actually do it, what a milestone it was for all of us."

Utility work for this segment of the rail has been underway for the last two years, but Kahikina said the hope is that the utilities will be finished in the Downtown Honolulu area by the end of the year and the Dillingham corridor by next summer.

"But soon you'll start to see the shafts being drilled and the columns coming up also before the end of the year," she says. 

"Then, once you start seeing the columns come up, of course then the guideway goes on top of that, but simultaneously, they'll start the stations," Kahikina continued. "So maybe in about two years, you'll see stations start to come up."

"Everything's going to be foundation work, then you'll just slowly start to see structure come up out of the ground," Deputy Project Director Matt Scanlon told ASD.

Kahikina says it's premature to talk about possible detours and general road closures, but she noted that the state Department of Transportation director had some "questions and concerns, so we want to see how can we change some of the maintenance and traffic to make sure we minimize the impact."

"We're not going to be able to eliminate it — it is a reality of construction — but hopefully it's not going to be as intrusive as Dillingham  ... . But [it's] a little bit premature to share how many lanes we're going to be closing and in what direction."

Anyone who's driven Dillingham Boulevard in recent years has witnessed the ongoing work that has shifted traffic patterns and caused delays.

Scanlon says that once contractors begin building the guideway, "they'll put down more of a permanent barrier."

On Dillingham, they'll largely be "building in the middle, so you'll see more of a fixed maintenance of traffic setup and then they'll just have an assembly line," he explained. "They'll start with the foundations and then the columns and they'll build the guideway, so it'll start to look like an assembly line going down the road and a little less haphazard than the utilities were, with cones moving around a lot."

 and spans just under 11 miles from East Kapolei to Aloha Stadium. This section includes the rail's first nine stations: K

aualakaʻi (East Kapolei), Keoneʻae (University of Hawai‘i-West Oʻahu), Honouliuli (Hoʻopili), Hōʻaeʻae (West Loch), Pouhala (Waipahu Transit Center), Hālaulani (Leeward Community College), Waiawa (Pearl Highlands), Kalauao (Pearlridge), and Hālawa (Aloha Stadium).

The second section, running 5.2 miles from Aloha Stadium to the Middle Street Transit Center, is on track to open in October.

This portion will add four more stations to the route: Pearl Harbor, the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, Lagoon Drive and Middle Street.

Trial operations just began late last month and the safety certification is being done in coordination with city state and federal agencies, 

(Eastbound passengers take note: you have to exit the train at the Aloha Stadium station before it enters segment two. Once the train returns westbound to the station, you can board the train to continue your trip).

According to Kahikina, segment two is in "system demonstrations," which measures the train's service availability and evaluates its performance and reliability.

Tsuda said they need to reach a 30-day rolling average of 98.5% availability.

"Once we finish that, then we have met all the requirements and we can turn it over to DTS for revenue service," he says. "Right now, based on where we are, we are still on track for the Oct. 15 grand opening and then the 16th ... for passengers to ride."

HART also has to "safety certify the system," which will run concurrently with this demonstration, he noted.

What lessons have HART learned from earlier segments of the rail that they can use during the construction of the third?

"We've gone through a number of items as we finished off segment one and turned over to [Honolulu's Department of Transportation Services], and as DTS has been operating segment one, they've provided some lessons learned that we're implementing," Project Director Vance Tsuda told ASD.

Among the changes you might see include the canopies on the station platforms, he noted. For example, segment one and two have a tensile fabric canopy but segment three will have a more traditional metal roofing material.

Scanlon said, too, that the way the guideway is being built is also changing.

The first two segments have been constructed with "precast segmental construction," where individual segments, "almost like Lego pieces," were built off-site in West O‘ahu and trucked in, he explained. The segments were then assembled with an overhead gantry, or overhead suspended crane, and tensioned together.

"We're going to be building the city center with a more traditional pre-cast girder system," Scanlon continued.

Before, the stations were tired more to when the guideway came through, he says.

Scanlon says that building the guideway and stations independently will allow the contractor to start the stations much sooner than in the first two segments, and will save both time and money.

The state Department of Transportation has an app — actually two — for that.

You can now get the HNL Airport app for the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu and the LIH Airport app for the Līhu‘e Airport on Kaua‘i free from Google Play and Apple Store.

According to the DOT, these apps "offer travelers a new mobility tool to navigate the airport terminal and also includes a link to the respective airport's flight information and airport website which features information about other airport services and guidance."

Using "blue dot wayfinding technology," much like other online navigation maps, a blue dot estimates your location on an airport map to help you navigate through the terminals. You'll also be able to search for points of interest like check-in, baggage claim, agricultural inspection stations, security checkpoints, departure gates, food and drink options, retail shops, lounges, restrooms, ground transport and more, the DOT noted in an announcement this week.

And for the planners in your group, a new online parking count feature can now be found on the 

 and the HNL app's 'Airport Information' link, offering an estimate on how many parking spots are available in different lots. DOT says that the counts re refreshed every 10 minutes.

According to the DOT, future app enhancement will include adding the location of the Skyline rail system's Lelepaua station, which is set to open later this year. Another app for Kahului Airport on Maui is also in the works.

The DOT did not immediately respond to questions from Aloha State Daily seeking more information.

The Aloha International Piano Festival will host its Keʻalohi International Piano Competition from Aug. 17- 24, giving talented young pianists a chance to win more than $30,000 in cash prizes.

This year, contestants in the quarterfinals of the competition range in age from 18 to 28 years old. They represent eight countries, including Russia, Taiwan, South Korea and more.

 the founder of AIPF, ahead of the upcoming competition. Nakamichi, who grew up in Kailua, was inspired to start AIPF because growing up she had her own heart set on taking music to the highest level.

“My aspiration was to go to The Juilliard School in New York City,” she said. “But in order to get accepted to The Juilliard School — or any other renowned conservatories — one would have to start preparing from your junior or senior [year in high school]."

Travel to compete in Mainland festivals is expensive, she added. Nakamichi’s parents were able to send her to a  festival.

“But not many kids in Hawai’i have access," she said.

That is why she decided to start the Aloha International Piano Festival. Nakamichi did indeed go to The Juilliard School, where she received bachelor’s and master’s degrees. She was also the featured soloist in the inaugural concert of the 

Today, the Keʻalohi International Piano Competition occurs every three years, with the first event occuring in 2022.

“We're going to be welcoming 14 quarterfinalists who have passed the preliminary video round,” she said. “The level is is unbelievably high. When I was receiving the video submissions, I just could not believe the quality, and the high level of playing by all of the preliminary competitors.”

Those participating in the competition receive accomodations and food, she said.

“The Keʻalohi only happens every three years,” Nakamichi said. “So if people could think of it like the Olympics of the piano —  because the Olympics only happen every four years. Competition is always so exciting to watch, and then people will get to experience the feel of a serious competition, and the artistry.”

The competition includes free performances for the quarterfinals and semifinals. The top three performers will play with the Hawai’i Symphony Orchestra on Aug. 24.

With each game getting televised on the ESPN family of networks, combined with its sheer name brand recognition, the Little League World Series has upheld its reputation as the biggest platform in youth sports for decades. 

Held annually in Williamsport, Pa., teams from around the world compete for the opportunity to merely appear in the tournament. 

Since 2018, the state of Hawai‘i has become a mainstay in the tournament. Teams from the Islands have won six of the last seven West Regionals, including Honolulu Little League in 2025. 

The 2025 Little League World Series will mark Honolulu Little League manager Gerald Oda's third trip to Williamsport. Oda led HLL to 2018 and 2022 to LLWS championships, going a combined 11-0 in those tournaments. 

Although the 2025 LLWS tournament began on Wednesday, Honolulu will not begin until Friday due to the tournament's bracket draw. Honolulu will take on Connecticut's Fairfield National Little League on Friday at 1 p.m. HST in a game that will be televised live on ESPN. 

Aloha State Daily recently caught up with Oda via Zoom for a Q&A prior to a team dinner in one of the team's first days in Williamsport. 

Congratulations on making it to Williamsport once again. So many people look at it as a once in a lifetime experience, but for you, it's your third time. 

 "I just really feel thankful for these bunch of kids that we have. It's all due to their hard work and their effort and just very grateful. I don't take this for granted one bit. Like you said, it's a once in a lifetime opportunity. But to make it this third time, I deeply appreciate this opportunity to represent again our great state of Hawai‘i to be on this journey with these 12 kids."

 The first two teams you took to Williamsport pretty much dominated the competition. This year's team has had some tight games in 

 but still won them all thus far. Is the ability to pull out the close ones part of the identity of your team this year?

"[The 2025 team] is totally different. It's human nature. You're gonna want to compare. No different from our 2022 team, the first thing people say is, 'How does it compare it to the 2018 team?' They're all different. You know, 2018 team, bunch of hammahs. Thirteen out of the 14 players went on to play college baseball. The 2022 team, they dominated right when they came to Williamsport, which we're very grateful and appreciative of. 

"[The 2025] team is different. It's like making a puzzle. The 2018 team was a totally different puzzle to put together and picture compared to 2022 and no different to this team. We don't have to be like how 2018 was or how 2022 was. We just have to make our own beautiful picture together."

You guys are the last team to take the field in the entire 20-team tournament this year. Do you enjoy the strategy part of that, or are the boys eager to get out there? 

"They're definitely eager to play. But for us, I think it's a benefit being the last team to play. It could work both ways. We played the first day in 2022, which was great. We could get into that rhythm early, and it helped us out tremendously. So vice versa. I'm just hoping that us being the last team in this tournament is going to help us in a sense that it gives the kids a chance to soak it in more so off the field, so that when we step on the field, they're going to be really hungry to play."

 It's been 20 years since the kids from ‘Ewa Beach went to the World Series and became the first Hawai‘i team to win it all. Kids on the teams that followed said they were inspired by that run. Any time there's a team in Williamsport from Hawai‘i, regardless of Island, they gain the entire state's support. You've experienced it a couple of times. What's that support like?

 "A-may-zing [laughs]. That Layton Aliviado team back in 2005 when they went, of course, tremendous. Respect for those guys, because they were the first team to make it here and win it all. And no different from 2008, when Timo Donahue coached the team and they won it all. And even in 2010 when Brian Yoshii took his team and they won the U.S. championship that year. So of course, they laid on the groundwork for us in here in Honolulu Little League, and I deeply appreciate and respect those guys. Since back then, it's always been that same way. I was explaining it to the Mainland reporters that you don't know how Hawai‘i is, that Hawai‘i is a very special place in the sense that of course, you're very competitive with one another trying to represent and get out of the state tournament. But once a team leaves Hawai‘i, it's like, that's our team. 

"We explained to the boys that we are no longer Honolulu. We're Team Hawai‘i. We're representing the entire state of Hawai‘i, and it's our responsibility now to make sure that when we step on the field, whatever we do, that we show the world how great our state is by their behavior, not necessarily just how we play, but by our behavior. And the support and love that we get from everybody back home is tremendous. After winning the regional tournament, almost got 200 text messages like, holy moly. My phone just blew up, which I was very appreciative. I could be saying the same thing about all the parents . ... It could be just a simple text message, a phone call, but just knowing that there's so many people back home wanting us to do well, praying for us to do well, it means a lot."

What kind of ballplayer were you back in the day?

 "Horrible [laughs]. I was not a good baseball player. I wasn't good. You know, I thought I was good. I was cocky as hell. I wasn't really good, but I do have a lot of great experiences from my Little League baseball coaches. Guys that not only did they teach us baseball, but they were just good coaches that really cared for myself and my brothers. ... They taught us the Xs and Os on the ball field. But they taught me, they showed it by how much they cared for myself, along with my brothers. That's who I wish to be. I was not a very good baseball player, but I really had great coaches, though."

 How did you get into coaching? Were you always winning a lot of games?

"My older brother, Donovan, he was a former baseball player at the University of Hawai‘i. After he graduated one of the parents saw him one day and asked him if he was interested in coaching. My brother said yes, and my other brother [and current Honolulu Little League assistant coach], Keith, was coaching with me. We all decided, hey, let's give back. I started the journey some 33 years ago. How I coached when I first started coaching with my brothers, now it's totally different. When I was young, I already thought I knew it all, but I still don't know it all. That's the great thing about coaching. If you stay humble and you always stay hungry to learn, there's so much I can improve on, even to this day. But it's something that's very gratifying for myself along with my brother Keith and (Honolulu Little League assistant coach) Willis Kato, too."

Pretty much every adult involved in Little League baseball is a volunteer. What's your day job like? 

: "I'm an investigator for GEICO Insurance. I work in their special investigations. I'm very fortunate. It gives me a lot of flexibility. Without that kind of flexibility with my job, there's no way I could coach baseball. Of course, I'm very fortunate and appreciative to have that kind of occupation, being an investigator with a great company at GEICO."

One difference in you I noticed from the last time you were on ESPN in 2022 to now is the tattoo on your left arm. Can you explain the significance of it? 

"It's actually a new tattoo. There's actually Kanji on it in Japanese, it means never give up. It's my way of reminding myself that no matter what, never give up. And I explained that to the kids, that even as coaches, as an adult, there's times that I feel like, wow, can we really do it? But, looking at this tattoo on my arm always reminds me to never give up. Nothing we can't accomplish as long as we don't give up."

 Thanks for sharing that. When exactly did you get it? Do you have any other tattoos? 

 "I got it in 2023, so about two years ago. I have one on my back, but you can't see it, it's a smaller one on my back, my shoulder. Me and my best friend actually got it together. It was actually his daughter that gave me the design, that did the ink on my arm. So I very much appreciated that, that she did it for me. ... She went on, and it was painful as hell, but again, it has deep significance. For me, I wanted something that really meant something. I practice Buddhism. 

"There's a carp. There's a waterfall, and so my tattoo is about a carp trying to get up this waterfall. If the carp gets up to this waterfall, it promises that if you can make it to the top, you become this dragon. They call it the dragon game. It's actually a dried up carp trying to make it up to this waterfall. It goes all the way to here, and it turns into a dragon. 

"But it symbolizes that whole never give up thing that even though it seems insurmountable, if you want to achieve greatness, then you cannot give up. ... I will never give up, it all ties into that, and that's the significance of that tattoo. And it reminds me every day that, hey, if you ever want to achieve something great, you got to make great effort, and you cannot give up."

Mahalo for your time and insight, coach. Is there anything you'd like to add? 

 "I just want to say thank you to everybody back home for all their tremendous support and prayers. There's a lot of 

 out there. There's a Mānoa team coached by Matt Apana. There's a Fear 808 team coached by Chris Hino, there's an LA team coached by 

. They're all at the 12U World Series for Cal Ripken in Branson, Mo. And then you have a 10-and-under Hawai‘i Kai team coached by Shane Butcher, they're in 

 Just wishing all those guys the best. All of us are all in the same boat. We're just trying to represent Hawai‘i in the best way possible, and deeply, deeply sending prayers to those guys."

We get the carpaccio di capesante ($35) to start. This fresh scallop sashimi features plump Hokkaido scallops served with sea asparagus, red onions and tobiko caviar with a light champagne dressing.

The Insalata Misticanza ($22) features organic mixed greens and petite vegetables topped with organic carrot dressing and yuzu foam.

It’s recommended to mix this thoroughly; the foam dissipates throughout the salad, enhancing its refreshing flavors.

This classic Roman dish features a savory medley of guanciale (Italian cured meat), pecorino romano and parmigiano Reggiano prepared tableside in an imported pecorino romano cheese wheel.

This dish is designed with cheese lovers in mind, since the Pecorino cheese boasts a strong, nutty flavor. It’s made primarily from sheep’s milk — “Pecorino” is derived from the Italian word for sheep, or “pecora,” according to our server — and is known for its salty and tangy flavor.

The dish is finished with toasted black peppercorns sprinkled on top. The spice is nicely balanced by the sharp cheese.

We were told the eatery used to feature cacio e pepe — spaghetti with black pepper and Pecorino Romano cheese — but changed the cheese wheel dish to feature rigatoni.

This comforting dish features gnocchi in Pomodoro sauce and topped with cherry tomatoes and mozzarella di bufala. The gnocchi is cooked perfectly — not too mushy and with a slightly chewy texture — and the sauce, made from San Marzano tomatoes, is bright yet hearty. The creamy pieces of mozzarella di bufala, though, are its crowning glory.   

Tiramisu lovers, be sure to save room for dessert — the eatery just debuted a new tableside tiramisu experience. Designed to serve two people, the dessert features an impressive presentation and is essentially constructed layer by layer at your table.

Ladyfingers are soaked in a mix of Illy coffee and coffee liquor. Then, the dessert is created with layers of tiramisu foam, the soaked ladyfingers, light tiramisu mascarpone cream and chocolate shavings on top.

The eatery had tiramisu on its menu before, but this latest offering is a more creative rendition. The ladyfingers are adequately soaked and boast a robust coffee flavor, and the mascarpone cream was light and fluffy. We loved how the dish was balanced — not too sweet, but not too bitter.
