After Lucas Borrow's request for an additional year of eligibility was denied by the NCAA following spring practices, the University of Hawai‘i football team's coaching staff searched far and wide to find a new starting punter. 

Hawai‘i's search led them to somebody who had never played the sport before, albeit in familiar territory: Billy Gowers, a professional Australian rules footballer. A native of Melbourne, Australia, Gowers impressed UH coaches in clips sent over from Prokick Australia, an organization that sends kickers and punters to college football teams. 

Before moving to the Islands, Gowers dabbled in a variety of sports in addition to Australian rules football, including golf, volleyball, cricket, and most recently, kabaddi, a prominent sport in South Asia. 

Back home in Australia, Gowers also developed a passion for cutting hair. A barber and entrepreneur, Gowers has been cutting hair for half a decade, giving out an estimated 10,000 haircuts in that span. He even opened up a shop, Zeppelin Barbers, in his hometown. 

Gowers, 29, left everything behind in order to move to Hawai‘i over the summer and join the Rainbow Warriors on a football scholarship. 

"Everyone here has been amazing, really welcoming," Gowers told Aloha State Daily. "The school is great. The school work, not so much for me, just because it's a bit of an adjustment. But yeah, the place of Hawai‘i is just incredible. The beaches, people, mountains, everything. I love it."

Early returns for Gowers on the field have been promising. The power in his right leg is evident when he's seen booming 75-yard punts in the Mānoa air. The ball can trickle and land further when he rolls out to his right, which he calls his "AFL style" punt. He is not a fan of the term "rugby punt," which has become the default to describe Australian punters in football vernacular. 

"He's just scratching the surface right now," Hawai‘i special teams coordinator Thomas Sheffield said. "There's still so much more left in the tank. He's only really been punting a football for like, seven, eight months. This is all brand new to him, and all we're trying to do is coach him and mentor him and build consistency and get him comfortable with the game."

During fall camp, each practice has been an opportunity for Gowers to learn more about the game leading up to UH's 2025 season opener against Stanford on Aug. 23. In a Saturday scrimmage, he punted behind a shield for the first time, continuing to turn heads with powerful spiral punts that whistled and pierced through the wind. 

Gowers is UH's sixth Australian punter since the turn of the millennium, joining Mat McBriar, Alex Dunnachie, Scott Harding, Stan Gaudion and Borrow. Although Gaudion hasn't punted for the Rainbow Warriors since 2020, he and Gowers both graduated high school in 2014. 

As the rest of Hawai‘i's freshman class settled into campus prior to fall camp, Gowers realized he was at least 10 years older than his classmates. 

"It's been interesting. A lot of the guys here, their bodies are just so big that I kind of look at them and forget that they're young until they start talking. It's been a nice little adjustment," Gowers said. "I've always sort of hung around some younger people as well, playing playing AFL and VFL, so it hasn't been too hard to adjust to. Obviously my interests and all that are a little bit different to what they are, and I'm sort of pretty locked in at the moment. It's still good. It keeps me young, that's for sure. But I certainly don't feel too old. So, that's nice as well."

Added Sheffield: "He's 29, but you got to think him coming to America and just his whole life just turning upside down, he's really like an 18-year-old kid as far as that is concerned, but he's able to handle it better than a 17-, 18-year-old, because he is so much older and much more mature. He blends in really well with the guys. The guys love him."

Gowers is currently studying business at UH, an area where he has a head start due to his real-world experience opening and maintaining a barbershop back home. Teammates and coaches are certainly aware of his haircutting prowess — Sheffield and his kids have already received cuts from Gowers. 

On a recent afternoon, Gowers gave a haircut to Rainbow Warrior defensive lineman Jackie Johnson III. Johnson, a 2021 Roosevelt graduate, is listed as a senior on the roster, but received a haircut from a freshman seven years older than him. While a standard haircut at his shop costs 70 Australian dollars before additional services such as a beard trim, Gowers hasn't charged his teammates or coaches for a cut. 

"I think of it as looking after people's mental health, really. I feel like a haircut can change the way you feel about yourself," Gowers said. "It's good having a haircut. Whether it's a good one or a bad one, hopefully walking away thinking it might be a good one, it's a nice feeling I think."

Gowers spent approxamtely 40 minutes meticulously cutting Johnson's hair with his own clippers and scissors, lamenting that he didn't have his blow dryer with him because of the difference in voltage between Australian and American power outlets. 

The soft-spoken Johnson appeared very satisfied with his fade and beard line up, dapping up Gowers and thanking him before heading back to his home. 

It became evident quickly to Johnson that Gowers is a professional barber. There may be a day when Gowers opens a shop in Hawai‘i, but that would be after he gets a clear answer on how far his American football career could take him. He admits he's only watched one NFL game, the 

, but it was intriguing enough for him to make it his next pursuit. 

"I probably wouldn't have moved across the world at 29 with life so stable, and life is pretty good in Australia. That's the ultimate goal: The NFL," Gowers said. "But look, there's a lot of performance that needs to happen prior to that, as well as a lot of learning from my end. At this rate, I probably don't understand the game as well as I need to be to even be thinking about the NFL. So for me, it's more so just learning the game, understanding the game, and trying to execute the game. 

"So, from there, I think the NFL stuff, whether it happens or not, it's pretty much just up to me whether I'm good enough. ... I think I'll know reasonably quickly if I'm even close to that standard, or ever going to be close to that standard. But right now, I just want to sort of wrap my head around the game and play well for Hawai‘i."

The Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement is now 

, a change the nonprofit announced on Monday, Aug. 11. The rebranding also includes a new tagline: “Hawaiians Advancing Hawaiʻi.”

“Our new name, Hawaiian Council, reflects our work and our commitment, grounded in collective leadership,” said Kūhiō Lewis, the chief executive officer of the Hawaiian Council, in a written statement. “It immediately tells people who we are and who we serve. It also eliminates the confusion that came with the acronym ‘CNHA’ and better reflects our kuleana to lead with unity, intention and pride in our lāhui.”

The nonprofit has been known as CNHA for 25 years, according to representatives of the group. The new logo draws inspiration from ʻaha, "a cord of many strands woven together — symbolizing the collective strength of the Hawaiian people,” according representatives of the nonprofit. It was designed in-house by the Hawaiian Council’s creative team.

“This isn’t a departure from our mission — it’s a deeper alignment with it,” Lewis said. “As we continue to grow and expand our reach, we wanted our identity to reflect who we are today and where we’re headed.”

Hawaiian Council has headquarters in Kapolei. The nonprofitʻs mission is to “enhance the cultural, economic, political and community development of Native Hawaiians,” according to its website. It is also a Native Community Development Financial Institution certified by the U.S. Department of Treasury and a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development certified housing counseling agency.

Much of the West Maui community was destroyed in a wildfire on Aug. 8, 2023, that killed more than 100 people and displaced thousands of local families. Tourism has been slow to return, Hua Momona Foundation 

Founder and President Gary Grube told Aloha State Daily. “It’s going to take some time.”

"Last year’s festival was deeply personal for me, not just as a chef, but as a member of the Lahaina community still healing,” said Zach Laidlaw, executive chef for Maui Music and Food Experience, in an announcement Wednesday. “I’m honored to return and lead the culinary team again—this time with an even bigger mission. Cooking for a cause this meaningful, surrounded by music, ʻohana, and resilience, is a once-in-a-lifetime kind of feeling."

This year’s three-city tour will begin on Aug. 15 and 16 at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa, travel to San Antonio on Sept. 20 and Chicago on Nov. 7, according to organizers. Headliners for Maui will include Paula Fuga, Tavana, Ledward Kaapana, Dumpstaphunk, Ernie Isley and Bernard Fowler of the Rolling Stones, among others. Musicians for the Mainland shows have not yet been announced.

“I feel like it’s part of my destiny to help export the best of the aloha spirit, and of the people, the culture, the music and the food outside the state of Hawai

i because not everyone can afford the plane ride,” 

. “... I’m not doing it for financial benefit. I personally don’t get a dime for the time I put into this.”

Grube, who works in the tech industry and splits his time between Chicago and Lahaina, added, “New this year, we

’re bringing that excitement to Chicago and San Antonio. The important thing besides the people who come to enjoy the event is the talent involved, including local chefs, who will get exposure outside of the state.”

Hua Momona Foundation is the nonprofit arm of Hua Momona Farms, 

which sits on 25 acres in Kapalua in West Maui, growing and selling organic produce, microgreens and more. The Grube family founded the farm in 2019, and in 2021, created the foundation to donate food to residents in need.

Grube told ASD that immediately after the 2023 Lahaina fire, the farm ramped up to provide about 6,000 hot meals per month. The organization continues to serve hot meals, he said, but now closer to 1,000 meals each month. To date, 

has served over 80,000 hot meals to those impacted by the fire.

“It just fuels the soul,” Grube said. “We hear those comments all the time. It’s very rewarding and I think we’re the only ones still doing [providing hot meals].”

In addition to combatting food insecurity in Lahaina, Grube said the foundation is also focused on cultivating youth programs around agriculture and music.

“We really want to scale the Maui youth music programs, raising more money to impact more children and teenagers,” he said. “Stats on mental health show there’s a much higher rate of depression, especially with kids. And what we’re doing is giving kids the opportunity to learn music. If they don’t have a ukulele, we will get them one to borrow and practice with.”

Maui born and raised Chef Naiwi Teruya is the instructor for 

Hua Momona’s Youth Ukulele Ensemble, which Grube said will make its first on-stage debut at this year’s Maui Music & Food Experience.

Looking ahead, Hua Momona Foundation plans to fundraise to build a 3,000-square-foot pavilion on the farm’s property, he noted, which will function as an event and community center “for healing.”  

The building permits took 33 months to get approved, he said, so next steps are finding for sponsors to help bring the vision to life. “I’m grateful they got it done and now we just need to raise the rest of the money to build a permanent facility.”

From Aug. 15 to 16, the Hua Momona Foundation will host its second annual Maui Music & Food Experience at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa, showcasing nationwide musicians and chefs. Proceeds from the tour will go toward the foundation’s efforts to address food insecurity and invest in youth music programs on Maui.

, recently received a $25,000 donation from the 100th Infantry Battalion Veterans organization, or Club 100, for his latest storytelling project about the unit of soldiers from Hawaiʻi who fought in World War II.

ID8's mission is "to foster ideation and expression to create positive impacts." Currently, it is producing a documentary called, “The 100th: Seeds of Aloha.”

The film’s trailer, which includes an original song by Harold Payne titled “They Gave Their All,” was screened June 28 at a gathering commemorating the 83rd anniversary of the formation of the 100th Infantry Battalion.

“The 100th: Seeds of Aloha” is the second part of the Aloha Spirit film trilogy that launched 

 in 2024 and will conclude with “Ono: Foods of Aloha,” which is slated to start production by the end of the year.

Sue told Aloha State Daily that the film is “a story about soldiers going beyond the typical heroism, valor and sacrifice of war to share aloha. … The trilogy of Aloha Spirit films that ID8 is producing begins with Shaka, goes to the 100th and finishes with Ono, which is a food history of Hawaiʻi. All these films are immersive experiences for audiences that convey define and pass on the DNA of the aloha spirit.”

ID8 is continuing to raise funds for “The 100th: Seeds of Aloha,” which he said is intended for audiences from second grade and up. Sue said that the seed money from Club 100 will "help us with our domestic interviews that started at Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum. Marketing already captured 25 interviews but plan to capture at least 50 domestically.”

In the fall, ID8 will travel with a full film crew to Italy, France and Germany "to collect gratitude and connection stories," he said. "The concept of is very key to this film in that we're 80 years past the conflict and wish to create a story of healing and aloha.”

The film’s budget is “$500,000, of which we’ve raised 18% so far,” he noted.

“Our nonprofit does have recurring income on a quarterly basis from the 

 but for the most part, we intend to raise the funds by donors who wish to share aloha spirit with the world, particularly given that 2026 is the 250th anniversary of the United States of America.”

There’s still much work to be done to compile content for the film, Sue said, adding, “We have a tremendous amount of archival content to pull, interviews to integrate, animated, maps, timelines and special effects to integrate.”

The film's postproduction budget is "significant," since ID8 aims to "pay living wages to both our traveling production crew [and] postproduction team," he said. Sue and the nonprofit's board members are unpaid volunteers. 

The overall goal of the Aloha Spirit film trilogy is to “share aloha and help others make the world a better place through aloha," Sue said.

“Shaka, A Story of Aloha” has entered into a distribution contract, which will soon become public, he added. 

“The estimated date of streaming release on a large scale will be November or December of this year. We have retained the theatrical rights to the film and will do platform and education releases on our own. All our films are created to be film classics with evergreen appeal.”

While there are many organizations helping to make this project possible, Sue highlighted a partnership with the 

 based in Connecticut, “which has created a curriculum based on our Shaka film." According to Sue, the curriculum "uses seven- to 13-minute clips as icebreakers in classroom sessions, followed by experiential exercises for students" in

"The first pilot has been through the entire Hawaiʻi [Department of Education] system and from there, potentially, can go out to Choose Love Movement’s 20,000 schools nationwide and schools in 121 participating countries.”

“The 100th: Seeds of Aloha” film will also likely be distributed in a similar fashion, Sue said, with the end goal to be streaming on airlines, cruise ships and more.

“I am most excited about our being able to bottle the concept of aloha and share it with the globe,” he said. “Aloha and the concept of paradise are simply a choice. We can choose to create a living hell around us or a living paradise. And everything we do is a nonprofit we underscore that principle.”

The annual Hawaiʻi Food & Wine Festival is set to return for a 15th event this year with a theme of “FEAST,” which stands for Food, Education, Agriculture, Sustainability and Tourism, according to organizers of the event, who shared the news at a launch event on Wednesday, May 14.

for festival events from Oct. 17 through Nov. 2, which span three islands: Hawaiʻi Island, Maui and Oʻahu.

“What started as a three-day culinary event in Waikīkī in 2011 has grown into a statewide movement that celebrates our chefs, supports our farmers, uplifts Hawai‘i’s food systems and has helped establish Hawai‘i’s reputation as a leading culinary destination,” said Denise Yamaguchi, the chief executive officer of the festival, in a written statement.

Co-founded by Roy Yamaguchi and Alan Wong, James Beard Award-winning chefs and leaders of the Hawaiʻi Regional Cuisine movement, the festival has grown significantly over the years.

In 2024, the festival, which is a program of the nonprofit Hawaiʻi Ag & Culinary Alliance, included more than 100 world-renowned chefs and culinary leaders. To date, it has raised $5 million to support local community and ʻāina-based organizations commited to agricultural and culinary education, according to its representatives.

This year, the festival will have 23 new chefs, including Leah Cohen, Johnny Courtney, Masa Gushiken, Alex Kim, Nini Nguyen, Dominica Rice-Cisneros and Aarón Sánchez, as well as veteran chefs for the festival including Chris Cosentino, Dean Fearing, Brandon Jew, Andrew Le, Robynne Mai‘i, Spike Mendelsohn, Michael Meredith, Masaharu Morimoto, Shota Nakajima, Jason Peel, Sheldon Simeon and Nancy Silverton.

As part of festival activities, Alan Wong will host his first annual Cuisines of the Sun Golf Classic on Friday, Oct. 17, at Mauna Kea Golf Course on Hawaiʻi Island. Other festival events include the 27th annual Roy Yamaguchi Golf Classic on Friday, Oct. 24, at Kāʻanapali Golf Course on Maui.

A few new events include “World of Wagyu, Wine & Whiskey,” which takes place on Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa, as well as the Matcha Chai Brunch, which will include tea-inspired cocktails and a selection of teas guided by a tea sommelier on Sunday, Nov. 2, at the Hyatt Regency Waikīkī Beach Resort and Spa.

After years of discussion, plans to redevelop a property near Ko Olina Resort that currently houses Paradise Cove Lū‘au are advancing.

A joint partnership called Cove Campbell Kobayashi LLC will redevelop the 10.85-acre property as The Cove. This partnership is comprised of the James Campbell Co., a Hawai‘i-based, nationally diversified real estate company with a portfolio valued around $5 billion; locally owned and operated real estate development firm Kobayashi Group; and BlackSand Capital, a Hawai‘i-focused private real estate investment firm.

A final environmental impact statement published in late January says that the project aims to "update the commercial lū‘au show and create and authentic Hawaiian outdoor recreation facility and community gathering place for kama‘āina and visitors that honors and reflects history, culture and connection to place."

Plans call for demolishing several existing dated structures at the site and existing concrete walls within the shoreline setback area, after which the site will be restored to pre-existing conditions before being redeveloped, the EIS states.

Redevelopment will include a new amphitheater and performing arts venue that can house a daily commercial lū‘au and other events.

Other planned updates noted in the EIS include an improved main arrival area, retail shops hosting Hawai‘i-made goods, restaurants and a marketplace, and common areas. An existing wedding chapel and support building will remain and may also be improved, while a "cultural pavilion" and open-air activity lawn areas may be included, it stated.

An announcement from the developers in late January said that the property — acquired by James Campbell in 1877 — has been used commercially since the 1970s and was last redeveloped in the early 1990s. 

When asked how the redevelopment plays into James Campbell Co.'s broader goals, President and CEO Kevin Penn told Aloha State Daily in an email, "The Cove Redevelopment is a transformational project that reaffirms our commitment to West O‘ahu. With a legacy spanning over 160 years, our company will continue to focus on developing projects that provide value for our community with a long-term, multi-generational timeframe. We are proud of our role in the development of Kapolei and we plan to be here for a long, long time.”

In the announcement, Penn said the publication of the final EIS is a "major step" in moving the redevelopment of The Cove forward and is the result of "many years of work with our partners and the community."

“We’re excited to be part of The Cove Redevelopment, a project that will bring a unique facility to the growing ʻEwa region," Alana Kobayashi Pakkala, CEO of Kobayashi Group, said in the announcement. " ... Beyond enriching the community, the project will create long-term jobs closer to home for residents of West Oʻahu."

The developers say the project is expected to generate and sustain an estimated 484 full-time jobs.

Anthony Makana Paris, chair of the Neighborhood Board No. 34 Makakilo-Kapolei-Honokai Hale, said the board has not yet taken an official stance on the project.

He told Aloha State Daily in an email Tuesday that the community has expressed a range of concerns regarding the project but there's also some "guarded optimism among the community about the potential benefits of the redevelopment."

According to Paris, many Ko Olina homeowners are worried about potential impacts to their views, parking availability, beach access, increased commercial traffic and the potential decrease of property values. These concerns are "valid," he says, also noting that he has seen the developer and landowner "thoughtfully address these concerns during the redevelopment process."

Indeed, a number of comments shared after the publication of the draft EIS last year — which are included in the final version of the document — made note of concerns such as traffic, light and noise pollution, parking and the potential strain on infrastructure, among others. 

Paris said, too, that some community members have voiced concerns about the impact of the redevelopment on sacred sites and iwi kūpuna in the area.

"It is essential that these concerns are handled with care and respect, and we hope the developers will take appropriate steps to preserve and protect these important cultural resources," he told ASD. "Again, I have seen the developer and landowner work with various cultural experts, the ‘ohana of those iwi kūpuna at the site, and the larger community in treating the iwi kūpuna and 

Some residents, however, are hopeful that the new spaces planned in the redevelopment will offer more "affordable and accessible options for local families," he said. "This could be a positive outcome that benefits the community." Others, said Paris, have shown enthusiasm for the planned marketplace, which is seen as a chance for local artisans and businesses to "engage with the community and share their work."

"It’s important to note that the developers have made efforts to engage the community over a multi-year visioning process, taking into account feedback from residents across West Oʻahu and beyond," Paris said. "This extended engagement demonstrates a commitment to ensuring the redevelopment aligns with the needs and concerns of our diverse community."

The developers said in January that community engagement will continue throughout the next stages of planning.

A representative for the developers told ASD that the next steps for the project include a review of the final EIS by the City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Planning and Permitting, another presentation to the Makakilo-Kapolei-Honokai Hale Neighborhood Board and public hearings with DPP and the Honolulu City Council.

Paris said the developers have reached out to the neighborhood board to present again, but as of Tuesday, that presentation was not yet scheduled.
