Waikīkī Yacht Club held its inaugural Royal Regatta. The event, held at Ala Moana Beach Park and the 

was a celebration of Hawaiian culture and was inspired by King David Kalākaua, who held an annual birthday regatta beginning in 1875. 

"It was really fun," organizer Malia Zimmerman said. "By the time all the paddlers in the community got to our Royal Regatta, they were ready to have fun. We had a really intense year in terms of races. And for our 

 team, we just finished the Na Wahine and then the men's team finished the Molokai Hoe. It was really good timing to kind of wrap up the season in a fun way."

Self-described as "a festive showcase of aloha," the event began 

anoe races were then held across a bevy of divisions, from keiki to teams comprised of paddlers 60 and over. Music by the Royal Hawaiian Band and hula performances were among the entertainment throughout the event. 

"The joy on everyone's faces, that was very fulfilling to see, the paddlers and the sailors have so much fun and have fun together and do it at the same time as being able to honor a king who was so joyful," Zimmerman said. "I think that really brought the whole program together. I've never seen paddlers so happy."

Zimmerman and other organizers are planning to hold the event again in the future, planning it around Nov. 16, 

"We are planning to ask the parks department if we can have the date next year, around his birthday, which is Nov. 16, so somewhere between late October, early November, we will hopefully be able to fit on the park schedule and do this event again and make it an annual event," Zimmerman said. "We're really excited about doing that, and we have so many people that have already suggested other additional races and cultural events that we can have, and eventually maybe expanding it into a full day or two days over the weekend to have an event that honors the king.

"We had just so many good donors and so many sponsors that really believed in this program and saw the vision for it. Just building this vision so people can see exactly what it could be and what it was this year and what it could potentially be, we were just so lucky that so many people came together and believed in this vision for this event and saw what it can be in the future, and want it to keep flourishing."

Located about two miles from Downtown Honolulu, the neighborhood of Mo‘ili‘ili was once primarily agricultural. Rice paddies and lo‘i kalo occupied most of the land, with houses and small businesses scattered about. By the 1960s, apartment buildings, grocery stores, and small shopping centers attracted more people seeking a quieter life while still wanting to remain close to Honolulu. The Mo‘ili‘ili community was tightly knit and soon became known as the floral capital of Honolulu as demand for lei and daily flower bouquets grew.

One gathering place for the Mo‘ili‘ili community was the Kamo‘ili‘ili Church, whose congregation was predominantly Hawaiian. Construction for the simple stone church began in 1850 and was completed three years later. Although the building was restored around 1900 and renamed Rice Memorial Chapel, many in the community continued to call it Kamo‘ili‘ili Church.

In addition to Sunday services, the hallowed building saw weddings, funerals, celebrations, and community meetings throughout its life. For a time, it even served as a Masonic hall to the Cosmopolitan Lodge of the Prince Hall Lodge of African American Freemasons in Hawaii.

A woman I know recalls time spent there as a child, waiting for her parents. With no babysitter at the time, she would have to stay in a small room by herself, where she was left to play, color, or find something else to keep herself busy. In a separate room, her father and the rest of his Prince Hall brothers would have their lodge meetings. In another room was her mother, who would attend the meetings of the Order of the Eastern Star with the other wives of Masonic husbands.

One evening, as a girl, she noticed a Hawaiian man looking in the window from outside. He had dark hair and a beard, thick eyebrows and full lips, and he wasn’t wearing a shirt. The man’s intense gaze was frightening as he pointed to the screen covering the window, indicating that he wanted her to open it. Without speaking, she shook her head, “No.”

Despite her refusal to cooperate, the hook holding the screen popped off on its own, and the man pulled the screen back. My friend said she remembers hearing a blood-curdling scream before realizing it was coming from her. She ran into the men’s lodge meeting and found the masons in a state of upset and confusion. They had apparently seen a Hawaiian man peering in at them from a window high up on the far wall. No outsider could bear witness to a solemn masonic ceremony, so the men went outside to chase the stranger away. They never found anyone hanging around outside, but did note that the window he peered into was nine feet off the ground with no crate, stone, or foothold to climb on.

As time marched on, the church fell into disuse and then disrepair, and was condemned by the city. While the building sat empty, the graveyard, too, had gone untended. In 1968, plans for a new high-rise were announced, and the land beneath the century-old cemetery was chosen for development. Newspapers cited weeds covering gravestones, some of which were broken or leaning awkwardly. Trash had gathered near several plots, more than one tomb was cracked and crumbling, and several markers had already disappeared.

Although the last burial was in the 1950s, letters to newspapers expressed mourning for the loss of history and lament for the irreversible change. One writer posed a warning to other congregations that they may not be exempt from such bittersweet progress in the future.

Work to remove gravestones began in August 1968. Reverend Abraham Akaka of Kawaiaha‘o Church acknowledged the tension between history and progress. He reminded those gathered that every civilization advances by giving up some of its past, saying that growth often demands “selling something of the soul.”

Over the following weeks, workers uncovered the remains of 466 people. Of those remains, 206 were identified, while the rest will forever be unknown. Some graves held the bones of parents and children, while others contained only ashes. The remains were placed in small containers and reburied at Kawaiahaʻo Church in a shared resting place marked by a plaque listing the known names. Above the memorial hangs the bell that once rang from the steeple at Kamoʻiliʻili Church.

In November, Reverend Akaka returned to the site to perform special purification rites. The special blessing was requested because workers were reluctant to enter the area. Using an ‘umeke, a Hawaiian calabash, dating back to the days of Kamehameha I, the Reverend sprinkled the ground with water from the well at Kawaiaha‘o Church while reciting his prayers. It is rumored that more bones were found during construction, including one skeleton measuring nearly nine feet long, near what is now the pool area.

Completed in 1971, the Contessa condominium stands on the old church and cemetery grounds. It boasts 37 floors, 144 units, a sauna, and a swimming pool in the vibrant Mo‘ili‘ili neighborhood. Almost from the beginning, tenants complained of hauntings in the building. One woman enlisted the help of Kahuna nui Emma de Fries to bless her apartment and the entire building after constant construction noise bothered her, even when no one else could hear it. 

More than two decades later, my mentor, Glen Grant, shared another story about the Contessa. A plumber was called to an apartment to fix a kitchen drain. The woman who lived there told him to put his ear to the sink. Although he was hesitant, he crouched and listened and heard voices speaking Hawaiian.

“They’re asking what will be done with their bones,” he said, backing away.

He hurried to the elevator and watched in shock as the doors opened before he touched the button. He stepped in and, as the doors began to close, a hand covered with red mud slid between them, opening them again automatically. Standing there was a tall woman, her body caked in red clay. She smiled and waved as the doors shut once more.

Without warning, the elevator dropped several floors before coming to a sudden stop. Shaken, the plumber took the stairs and never returned to the building.

For more than 50 years, people have passed through the Contessa’s lobby unaware of the hundreds of people that were once buried beneath their feet, and what may still be waiting below the surface.

Before the gates to Kawaiahaʻo Church’s graveyard were locked to the public, I used to stop there during my Ghosts of Old Honolulu tour. One night, as our group stood before the Kamoʻiliʻili Church memorial, an older man asked if he could speak. He said he had worked on the construction crew that built the Contessa.

“I was one of the men digging the foundation for the pool,” he said. “We uncovered a skeleton, about nine feet long. Even I knew we shouldn’t have disturbed it. Reverend Akaka came, blessed the burial, and blessed us. We covered the bones right where they were. They’re still there.”

The Contessa condominium in Mo‘ili‘ili stands where Kamo‘ili‘ili Church and its mainly Hawaiian graveyard had served the community since 1850. The remains of nearly 500 people were moved for the condo, but workers and residents over the years have reported chilling tales of the spirits that remain.

On Tuesday, the University of Hawai‘i baseball team is set to depart for a trip to Japan, which lasts from Nov. 4-10. It is the first known foreign tour in program history. 

"We're so pumped," Hawai‘i head baseball coach Rich Hill said. "Senator (Glenn) Wakai was really the driving force behind this. We had been in talks with him, our administration, 

 have been great about this. It just kind of all came together when we realized that we were going to have support. ... A lot of people just push, push, push to make it happen. There were some roadblocks along the way, like anything when you're trying to do something new, but, man, we got it done, and we're heading to Japan, and couldn't be more excited."

The Rainbow Warriors will spend their trip in the Tokyo area. In addition to sightseeing and cultural exchanges, the 'Bows will play exhibition games against Waseda University and 

Keio University. Waseda and Keio are two of the best teams in Japan and rivals. Hill likened the two programs to "playing LSU and Tennessee."

Before their games against both teams, Hill will require the Rainbow Warriors to watch their opponents warm up and try to take a thing or two away from the disciplined and regimented style of play. 

"It is a choreographed work of art. It's like a broadway musical. The discipline, how accurate catch play is, the energy, the enthusiasm, it's my style of baseball. I love it," Hill said. "I just love the passion that they bring. I love the discipline, the adherence to fundamentals, the desire for excellence. It's really good for our players to see that style of baseball. I'm really looking forward to that."

Taking a trip to Japan as a team had been a possibility but not a certainty until recent weeks. The 'Bows knew to be prepared for the trip beforehand, whether it was getting the proper documentation to travel or planning ahead of classes missed. 

"Everybody's ready to go," star pitcher Isaiah Magdaleno said. "They've been on it. They've been telling us since the beginning, probably like the first (fall) meeting that it was a possibility, and ever since then, we've just been looking forward to it.

"It's super exciting. We usually don't travel in the fall, but we're super excited to get out there. It's a new experience for everybody, and everybody's excited. I feel like we're ready as a team and just really testing out the new team."

Fall ball intensified for the Rainbow Warriors with a trio of intersquad games over the weekend as part of its fall World Series. After returning from Japan, the Rainbow Warriors will host Hawai‘i Pacific for an exhibition on Nov. 15 at 1 p.m. at Les Murakami Stadium. The 2026 regular season then begins in February for the 'Bows. 

"We're a work in progress," Hill said. "Fall is always exciting, because we get to learn a lot about the players that we brought in. At the same time, it's a ramping up process, especially for the freshmen, managing their time, academics, baseball, strength and conditioning. It goes from 0 to 100 pretty quick, but we're figuring out the pieces."

Shangri La Museum of Islamic Art, Culture & Design has a new process for releasing tickets to its oceanside center in Kāhala. Previously, the museum had released tickets quarterly through a partnership with the 

. Now, tour tickets will be released monthly, with any money raised from ticket sales going to HoMA and Bishop Museum.

Shangri La does not keep the profits of its ticket sales. Instead, after costs are met, the proceeds of tours have directly supported the arts at HoMA

ticket sales will also support Bishop Museum.

The new program launched in September. Going forward, tickets will go on sale at 10 a.m. on the first Thursday of each month. The next set of tickets will release 

“We've always loved our HoMA relationship, of course,” Ben Weitz, the executive director of Shangri La, told Aloha State Daily. “They've been with us from the very beginning. We've learned so much becoming a museum with them as our collaborator in crime. And I think the important thing that we were looking to do is just really increase accessibility to the entire Hawaiʻi community. ... In the sense of partnering with Bishop, we wanted to get outside of Downtown and also, at the same time, really uplift another cultural institution, so we thought: ʻWell, why not have both? We could still support HoMA. And why not bring [in] Bishop as the Native Hawaiian, kānaka maoli-focused museum, which is the culture we steward here.’”

So far, tickets for some dates have sold out in as few as 10 minutes, Weitz said.

As part of visits to Shangri La, guests arrive at the site of the hosting museum and are shuttled to Kāhala for a few hours of exploration. After, they are returned to the hosting museum, where they also have admission for the day.

Another change with the new ticketing program? 

, where kamaʻāina could reserve tours for $5, if booked a few months ahead. Under the new system, kamaʻāina pay $20 if they book Thursday or Friday tours, hosted by HoMA. Admission is $25 for Saturday tours, hosted by the Bishop Museum. Non-residents pay $45.

Under the new ticket system, tickets are now released via Shangri La’s new website, 

, which gives Shangri La, instead of HoMa, data about who is booking tours, Weitz explained

“Now we're able to know who the guests are and be able to communicate with them to tell them all the great work we're doing for Hawaiʻi,” he said.

The City and County of Honolulu's home exemption applications are due Sept. 30. 

But if you have questions, the Honolulu Board of Realtors and the city's Department of Budget and Fiscal Services Real Property Assessment Division, or RPAD, have free open houses planned in an effort to help O‘ahu homeowners learn more.

The first open houses were held last weekend, but more are set to take place at FarmLovers Markets in September.

"We started this last year to try and raise more awareness for the real property exemptions and dedication," Suzanne Young, CEO of the Board of Realtors, told Aloha State Daily.

Deadlines are once a year through RPAD, she said, "and we just find that every year, we meet people or hear about people who actually are homeowners who qualify for the property tax exemptions but had no idea that they didn't have one filed with their property, didn't pay attention that there's a deadline."

Last year, the program was held at the BOR offices with very little turnout, she noted.

"We shifted this year and said we need to go out to the communities, and the farmers markets are so well attended, they're out in the neighborhood," Young said. "This past weekend, we were in Kaka‘ako on Saturday and Kailua on Sunday and it blew our expectations."

They were able to find 11 homeowners out of 70 groups across both days who had not filed an exemption, she noted.

The home exemption reduces the taxable value of a home by $120,000 for homeowners under 65, and by $160,000 for homeowners 65 and older.

With the basic homeowner exemption, that means, for example, if your property is valued at $500,000, you'll only be taxed on $380,000, Young explained. 

According to Young, a $120,000 reduction in tax valuation equates to a savings of $420 on your real property tax bill each year. With a $160,000 reduction, that's a $560 annual savings.

To qualify, you have to own and occupy the property as your principal home; your ownership is recorded at the state Bureau of Conveyances in Honolulu on or before Sept. 30 the year before you'll claim the exemption; and you file a claim for home exemption on or before Sept. 30, RPAD notes. You only have to file for the exemption once.

"Our Realtors are all about housing," Young said. "We are the people who are the closest to housing issues, because our Realtors are experts and work with buyers and sellers every single day. This is just part of our community outreach."

, the first home exemption law was enacted in 1896, "to provide some tax relief, encourage homeownership and the settlement of land. In 1896, the home exemption amount was $300."

For all those who have been devout followers of Fatto a Mano, don’t worry: The business isn’t closed, according to owner James Orlando, who just opened new pizza shop 

“This is just the next evolution of Fatto a Mano,” he says. “Fatto a Mano is not dead; it’s just on a hiatus right now. It will be coming back as a storefront, but as of right now, the evolution is Mad Pie, your friendly neighborhood pizza shop.”

Located behind Down to Earth (and in the former space of HICraft Kitchen), Mad Pie offers pizzas by the slice, whole pies, salads and sweets.

Like the pizzas at Fatto a Mano, the pies here are made from naturally leavened sourdough. To Orlando, sourdough is the right way to leaven things because “it adds character, flavor and charisma.”

“I wanted to show the community what sourdough is all about,” he says. “All of our dough is fermented for at least four to five days and a maximum of almost a week. I have a 10-year-old sourdough starter that I feed water and flour to every single day. That’s what leavens the dough; it gives you a healthy crust, it gives you a healthy life, and to me, it’s the right way to leaven all the dough.”

While Fatto a Mano featured seven full-time pies on the menu, Mad Pie’s menu is expanded. It absorbed the seven pizzas from Fatto a Mano, but features several new creations, according to Orlando.

“The additionals are buffalo chicken ranch, our White Iverson and our supreme pizza,” he says. “The white Iverson has a shredded mozzarella base, house pulled mozzarella, an onion jam, housemade ricotta and we’re going to hit it with a sesame seed crust. When it comes out (of the oven), we add some fresh chives and parsley.

“My personal favorite right now is the White Iverson, but I’m a pepperoni kid,” he says.

The menu features several red sauce-based pies, and several white sauce-based ones. The Iverson is designed with cheese lovers in mind — there

’s a slight sweetness from the ricotta, and the sesame seeds give the crust a superb crunch, which contrasts nicely with the creamy mozzarella.

Pizzas are all 18 inches and they’re still made in a Neapolitan-style way, according to Orlando. It takes around 6 minutes for each one to bake.

While a supreme pizza might be considered a staple, Orlando didn’t have it on his menu until customers started asking for it.

“When you go to Costco, everyone wants the supreme pizza,” he says. “This has got our tomato sauce, housemade beef and pork sausage, pepperoni, mushroom, olives, red onions and sweet and spicy peppers.”

The Fungho ($32) has been a crowd favorite at Fatto a Mano. This pie features a mushroom bechamel base with the eatery’s mozzarella blend, which is shredded whole milk mozzarella and a housemade mozzarella, according to Orlando.

“We hand-pull all the mozzarella, let it dry overnight in the fridge, and we cut it by hand,” he says. “We’ve got local mushrooms by Small Kine Farm, and we’ve got housemade garlic herb ricotta. When it comes out of the oven, we’re going to hit it with some nice herbs.”

The Toby ($31), named after Orlando’s dad, is another fun creation. It features a housemade pesto base, whole milk mozzarella, fresh mozzarella, goat cheese and local cherry tomatoes. When it comes out of the oven, kale and truffle balsamic are added on top.

When it comes naming the pizzas, Orlando tried to think of something that’s “fun, relatable and energetic.” The flavor combos are based on his personal favorites.

“Every time I travel or when I’m home alone, thinking about pizza 24/7, I think to myself, ‘What would go well on pizza?’” he says. “Every time I go out to a restaurant and it’s not pizza and I eat a dish, my brain works like Tony Stark. ‘How do I take this dish apart and reconstruct it on a pizza?’”

Having a storefront has been a longtime dream for Orlando, who has worked in the food industry since he was 14 years old. He grew up in South Dakota and moved to the Big Island in high school, and later, moved to O

He recalls his first job, at 14 years old in South Dakota, was making pizzas at a hotel for room service.

“It was frozen dough; everything came from a bag or a can,” Orlando says. “I loved the art of making it, putting it in the oven, the ticket machine, people’s combinations that they wanted. To me, pizza is written in an obsolete vernacular. It’s just so open and there’s no more structure to pizza. Anything can be labeled a pizza now, and I love that idea.”

When he started working at a bakery in his earlier 20s, Orlando fell in love with “the art and science of flour and water.”

“I worked at Baker Dudes for three or four years of my career, and that’s where I learned a lot of the art of baking and the technique and skill, which I’m very grateful for,” he says.

’s been doing the farmers markets on Oʻahu for more than a decade — three years with the bakery, and seven years with Fatto a Mano. 

When he created Fatto a Mano, Orlando remembers building a business portfolio of his “pizza vision.”

“This was always the dream, the passion and the vision,” he says. “I’ve always wanted a wood fired concept, a slice shop concept and the third evolution would be a pasta restaurant — to have all three to complete my Thanos stones of a restaurateur.”

As for that pasta shop: “It’s probably not coming for another decade,” Orlando says. “I’m most excited for the air conditioning in here. I’ve been a mobile business for so long at the farmers’ markets. I’m excited to be in four walls with a super talented crew.”

If you want to take your pizzas to the next level, Orlando recommends adding some of the eatery’s ranch sauces.

“I’m a white dude from South Dakota, so ranch is in my DNA, it’s in my blood,” he says. “We’re doing a ranch program here; it’s all housemade from scratch.”

Choose from house buttermilk ranch, kimchi ranch or charred jalapeno lime ranch ($2.50 each). Or, you can get a flight of three ranch sauces ($7).

“Our house buttermilk ranch has nine things in it; nothing dried, fresh local herbs,” Orlando says. “The kimchi ranch is perfect for crust. Our charred jalapeno and lime ranch is a different take on a poblano crème. There’s a little spice to it; we leave the seeds on there.”

Mad Pie also offers two salads; choose from Caesar ($14) or an Italian salad ($17). At the eatery’s media event, we tried samples of each. The Caesar comprises MA‘O Romaine, house Caesar dressing, shaved Parmesan and sourdough crouton dust. You can add chicken for an additional cost ($3.50).

Meanwhile, the Italian salad includes MA‘O sassy salad, creamy Italian vinaigrette, fresh mozzarella, cannellini beans, red onions, pepperoncinis, soppressata and Kalamata olives.

When customers dine in, they won’t simply be given a number for their order. Instead, Orlando pulls down several vintage trophies from a shelf; he bought them off eBay for this very purpose, he says.

“When you come into Mad Pie and you order for here, we’re going to give you this vintage trophy,” he says. “There’s so many different types with a number on it. This is going to be placed on the table and how we bring your pizza to you. I’ve had this idea since I was in high school and I wanted to open up a pizza shop.”

Be sure to save room for dessert. The biz offers housemade chocolate chip cookies with roasted pistachios ($3.50), along with cannolis ($4 each, two for $7).

“I am Italian and my favorite sweet treats contain pistachios,” Orlando says. “We’re going to do a monthly different type of cookie and a monthly cannoli (flavor).”

The current cannoli filling features chocolate chips. The cannolis are generously stuffed, and the cookies boast slightly crispy edges and a soft, chewy center.

“Because my life is mad crazy and mad busy; I thought it was a dope name,” he says. “I love the slogan, ‘It’s your friendly neighborhood pizza shop.’ I go to New York once or twice a year, and pizza is so involved in the community in New York City. Everyone has their own community neighborhood slice shop that they go to.”
