There aren’t too many restaurants serving Japanese breakfast on Oʻahu. Outside of hotel buffets, some of your options include Gohan, Fujiyama Texas Hawaiʻi and I-NABA.
One more option has been added to the mix — Nori Bar in Ward Village just debuted its breakfast menu, which is only available on weekends from 8-10 a.m. for now.
Customers can choose from a variety of sets; all of them come with miso soup, rice, nori, tamago, pickles and plum.
We checked out the new breakfast during its opening weekend. So far, the salmon flakes and ikura set ($21) has been one of the most popular options. The salmon is moist and tender, while the ikura add refreshing pops of flavor.
Both this set and the broiled shio salmon set ($19) are breakfast menu exclusives. The latter features a 4-ounce portion of fish.
I love how all sets include crisp pieces of nori so you can create your own handrolls.

The sashimi set includes three pieces of ‘ahi, two pieces of salmon and two pieces of hamachi. It’s ideal for those wanting something on the lighter side.

The hamachi kama set ($21) was another one of our faves. The yellowtail collar boasts a melt-in-your-mouth texture and buttery flavor. Plus, it’s a good portion size.

If you’re craving something meatier, opt for the gyudon beef bowl set ($19). The beef is nice and tender — not dry — and the veggies round out its savory flavor.

If you want something hearty, the eatery’s new tonkotsu ramen ($16) is served all day (yes, even at 8 a.m.). It features pork broth with garlic oil, braised pork charsiu, kikurage, choi sum and green onions. It’s umami and savory, thanks to the stronger garlic flavor — perfect if you’re there for a later brunch or just want something more comforting.
