MĀNOA — Before Vladimir Kubr dished out a handful of assists as the University of Hawai‘i's starting setter on Saturday night, he was on the receiving end of the ultimate assist before the match even began. 

Kubr, the lone senior for the Rainbow Warriors, started his first career match for the 'Bows on Saturday against CSUN, earning a loud ovation from the Stan Sheriff Center crowd of 8,223 clad in white. The plan to start Kubr on senior night was devised by head coach Charlie Wade weeks ago. But first, he had to let regular starting setter Tread Rosenthal know. 

"It's a good cause for a good guy, and he was absolutely all on board," Wade said of Rosenthal's reaction.

With Kubr at the service line to begin the match, the 'Bows pounced on the Matadors early, jumping out to a 4-0 lead. The Rainbow Warriors led 10-3 when Rosenthal resumed his role as the team's regular setter, sharing an embrace with Kubr as he subbed out. 

Kubr's start set the tone for a 25-15, 21-25, 25-14, 25-16 victory for the No. 2 Rainbow Warriors, who closed out the regular season 26-4 overall and 9-1 in Big West play, 

winning the conference regular season title

 outright. Wade put Kubr back in during the closing points of the fourth set. Kubr, who finished with five assists, drew relentless cheers from fans with seemingly each step he took on the taraflex. 

"Everything. It means everything," Kubr said of the reception he received before, during and after the match on Saturday night. "This might be the best thing that will ever happen to me in my whole life.

"It felt good. But also, it's not just about me, it's about my team. It's about the program. It's about the fans and just the support."

And that favor Kubr received from Rosenthal in starting the match? Kubr did his best to return it, setting Rosenthal for a kill near the end of the fourth set. The 6-foot-11 Rosenthal skied for a spike that sent the Stan Sheriff Center crowd into a frenzy, but the point was overturned following a CSUN challenge. Kubr says it's the first time ever he was able to set ball for Rosenthal. 

, but that's what I expect from him," Kubr said of Rosenthal sacrificing his spot in the starting lineup on senior night. "He's a very selfless man. He's my brother, so we support each other."

"Not at all," Kubr said. "No, I'm actually happy to be honest. We have Louis (Sakanoko) and Adrien (Roure). He should be not setting me."

As Mark Kubr, Vladimir's father, took turns gazing lovingly at his son and the tribute video playing for him on the arena's video board, the tears flowed.

"It was surreal, because I've come to the Islands since I was very young. Since the ’70s, I've worked here, and the Hawaiian people have always taken me in and just been so gracious and kind," Mark Kubr told Aloha State Daily following the match. "For him to play for such an established organization in such a hallowed land, it means the world to me."

During his childhood in Southern California, Vladimir would tag along with Mark, an actor, on set. Vladimir Kubr, an actor, stuntman and model, got an early start in Hollywood, appearing in "Iron Man" and "Alice in Wonderland" as a 3-year-old in 2008.

Mark and Vladimir Kubr both like telling a story about how as a toddler, Vladimir was falling in and out of sleep during a shoot of a particularly important Iron Man scene.

"My first gig was Iron Man," Vladimir Kubr recalled. "The scene in particular was as 

dies, him and Iron Man are fighting on the highway. Obadiah picks up this SUV, and it was a family of five, and there's a little kid in car seat in the middle. That's me. It was 2 a.m. and shooting this, and they had to lift up the physical car, maybe 15, 20 feet in the air. 

"They had to keep waking me up. Because I was a little kid, it was like, bedtime. Jon Favreau, the director, was like, 'Is the kid asleep right now?' And then everyone is kind of freaking out because it's time to shoot, it's time to go. And they're like, 'Wake up the kid.' And as they're trying to wake me up, my dad is slowly walking away to try to just disconnect himself to the situation."

Added Mark Kubr: "I'm like, 'Oh s---,' right? He's asleep. He's asleep in the car. He's supposed to be a stuntman. So, anyway, to make a long story short, he ended up waking up and screaming, and he was perfect." 

Vladimir Kubr says he began playing volleyball because there was a year he didn't make the basketball team. While watching highlights of former UH star setter and 2023 AVCA Player of the Year Jakob Thelle, he set a goal to join the Rainbow Warriors and did so in 2024 after transferring from Pepperdine.

With the sole exception of Saturday night, Vladimir Kubr spent his UH career as a backup to Rosenthal, an AVCA All-American. Still, he has no regrets about staying in the Islands and seeing hs career through with teammates he considers brothers. 

"My father has always told me if you can count the friend number of friends you have on your on one hand, you're good," he said. "Your life is good. I don't have enough fingers for 19 (teammates) at all. I love my team very much."

After the season ends, Vladimir Kubr plans to wrap up his political science degree before moving back home to Southern California, where he'll pursue beach volleyball and more acting, modeling and stuntman opportunities. 

As he watched his son get filled to the brim with lei, Mark Kubr beamed with pride in the man his son has become. 

"I don't care what his endeavors are. I just want him to be a gracious, kind person. I'll be proud no matter what he does," Mark Kubr said. "As long as he's kind to other people, it doesn't matter to me."

Playwright and poet Lee Tonouchi, also known as “Da Pidgin Guerrilla,” did not imagine he would become a writer when he was growing up. But a poem he read in college, which was written in Pidgin, changed his mind.

, and he read it as part of a class at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, where he got a bachelor’s degree in English and a master’s in English with an emphasis in creative writing.

In February, Tonouchi was named the Hawaiʻi Poet Laureate. He is the third person to hold the role, which is named every three years by the Hawaiʻi State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, Hawaiʻi Council for the Humanities, and Hawaiʻi State Public Library System. This month, he is helping kamaʻāina celebrate National Poetry Month.

On Friday, April 17, Tonouchi will give the invocation at the Hawaiʻi State Legislature’s 

. The event runs from 4 to 8:30 p.m. and features Ballet Hawaiʻi, Hawaiʻi Symphony Orchestra, DJ Nate and more. Tonouchi will speak at 4:30 p.m. The event is free. 

Growing up, Tonouchi remembers his grandmother, a former plantation worker from Maui fought to be one of just a few women irrigators — a job usually reserved for men — and was “da biggest Pidgin talker,” but asked him to order at restaurants.

“She never like people hear her talk,” Tonouchi said.

Seeing that made him sad. It also got him thinking. In college, he started to write in Pidgin.

“Da Pidgin talker is always gon be perceived as being not as intelligent as da standard English talker,” Tonouchi said. “So the way I saw ʻem was you get two choices, right? You can either change yourself or try change the perception.”

He decided to dedicate his life to changing the perception. That started with incorporating Pidgin into his work in college creative writing and playwriting classes.

“And then I was like, ʻOh, if I can do my creative stuff in Pidgin, how come I no can do my critical stuff too?” he said.

Soon, he was writing 30-page research papers in Pidgin. And a master’s thesis. In 1999, he founded the literary magazine “Hybolics,” which included space for poems in Pidgin. Later, he developed the 

 at Hawaiʻi Pacific University. He also taught creative writing at Kapi‘olani Community College

. In 2023, the American Association for Applied Linguistics awarded Tonouchi the 2023 Distinguished Public Service Award for raising awareness of important social issues connected to language.

Some of his recent works include the book of poems “Significant Moments in da Life of Oriental Faddah and Son: One Hawai‘i Okinawan Journal,” the children’s picture book “Okinawan Princess: Da Legend of Hajichi Tattoos,” the edited anthology “Chiburu: Anthology of Hawai‘i Okinawan Literature”

His new role as poet laureate includes giving talks and hosting workshops. In February, he was the 2026 Writer in Residence at Punahou School, where he spent six days.

“My goal is try get people who never dreamed dey could ever write, write me something awesome,” he said.

Being a poet is not required to celebrate National Poetry Month.

“Just gotta be one fan of poetry, yeah?” he said. “And I think poetry get so many different styles that even if you no like some poetry, maybe you nevah read da right poetry yet.”

“Go borrow one book,” he said. “For me, it all started from reading ‘Tutu on the Curb.’ So maybe you gon find one poem you fully love, too. And then, oh might start one whole new career.”

WAIPAHU — Come to Waipi‘o Soccer Complex on a Sunday morning, and games are in progress in all directions. The bustling facility has over 20 fields, and nearly all are occupied on the weekends. 

Matches involving teams of nearly all ages and experience levels are being played simultaneously. In one of the back fields, a match involving elementary-aged boys is concluding. Coaches, seated parents and players alike can be heard yelling directions at each other. About 20 yards to the left of the young boys is a separate contest — it is there that the Women’s Island Soccer Association's over-50 division is holding its weekly set of matches. 

Competition in the women's over-50 division, as evidenced by the day's first match between a team named Riggers and another named Leahi Moms, is intense. In staying true to the active nature of soccer, no player on the pitch is idling. One defender made a clean sliding tackle against an attacker, bringing her opponent to the ground and drawing a grunt. The banter between players is equally competitive and friendly. 

In a season that lasts from January to May, there are five teams in the over-50 division. Two matches take place each week, with the fifth team taking a bye. Despite the battles that take place on the field, the league prides itself in fellowship among its players. After each match, members of both teams will have a potluck. Players from the first match will usually stick around and watch the second match, finding a place in the shade to sit while talking story.

The natural sense of community and pride in the league comes from its players understanding what they're doing is uncommon. 

"I'm just happy I can do it. I'm happy to be able to spend time with friends outdoors and be active and really show future generations this is what people at this age do," Kathy Carey, 69, told Aloha State Daily. "It is a commitment. It's not like playing tennis or golf, where you can show up or not show up. You're committing to the team. You need to be here. And we all miss games for various reasons, but if you can, you come and you give it your best and try to be supportive of your teammates."

While some players in the league are in their mid-70s, Alison Okumura is one of the youngest and newest members of the league at 52. As she's observed others playing regularly, she's gained inspiration from those around her. 

"Sundays were always quiet days for me. So, being here with the ladies, it's been really good," Okumura told ASD. "I'm inspired when you see them and you hear all the activities. You guys are, like, top tier. When I retire, I want to be just as active. You guys are so inspiring. You hear them talk about what they do — pickleball, they do swimming in the pool, they do water aerobics. They do line dancing and stuff like that with each other. It's inspiring for me to see what's in my future."

When it's time for Okumura's team, the Hale‘iwa Tsunami, to take the field against Holomua, both teams have gone through a brief warmup ahead of a match that features 40-minute halves with a water break midway through each half. Substitutions are unlimited and used liberally on sunny days such as this one. 

Okumura, a striker for Hale‘iwa, scores within the first five minutes of the game. Hale‘iwa's goalkeeper, Manu, made a diving save on a penalty kick to preserve the team's lead. 

Maintaining the decorum is the lone referee, Mike Fricano, a mustachioed man originally from New York, who blows his whistle and makes each call with conviction, even if players may not agree. "I was in the best position possible to see that," he sternly tells one after one of his determinations. 

In multiple instances, Fricano didn't grant the teams their substitutions unless they were ready near the halfway line before the ball went out of play. "Where are the subs? OK, no subs."

But make no mistake. Fricano, who has officiated since 1984, including the last 23 years in Hawai‘i, loves being out there. 

"This is why I'm here, because it's fun," Fricano, who referees matches of multiple age groups and genders across Hawai‘i, tells ASD at halftime. "These guys are great." 

Holomua scored the equalizer approximately 10 minutes into the second half, and neither team would score again despite fierce efforts from both teams. One player was down with an apparent contact injury for about 30 seconds, only to be told "it's just soccer, baby," by a teammate. She got back up. "That was f****** beautiful," the same teammate says to another player after a well-placed through ball. 

After the match, both teams sit in the shade to cool down. Okumura baked scones, just one of the appetizing options among the other baked goods. Her teammate, May Lapa, 66, points out that some members of the team have known each other long enough that they've seen each other become grandmothers. Okumura says teammates such as Lapa have encouraged her to keep moving and be social in order to keep her brain active.

"It's great. It's all in good fun," Okumura said. "It's worth the blisters on my feet to get to kick the ball and all that kind of stuff. I think a lot of people are used to saying 'I'm old' (as an excuse) but in reality, you won't move as good as you did when you were, say, 30 years old, but at least you're moving, right? That's what I get from the ladies, for sure. Once I stepped on the field with them, I told my husband there is no way I'm going to complain because they are suiting up and they come out and play."

Carey played for the men's team at both Punahou and Stanford since neither had a women's team when she first enrolled at each school. She helped the launch of Stanford's women's soccer program, then did the same for the University of Hawai‘i when it transitioned from a club sport to an NCAA Division I team in 1994. The soccer lifer has deep gratitude in having a place to play with her peers.

"To be able to do all I can do, play soccer and everything else at this age, I really feel blessed," she said. "We're all friends and teammates. Sometimes we play with each other, sometimes we play against each other. I think most of us try to keep in mind that we're just out here having fun. Win or lose, it's about having the opportunity to be here together."

Another player on Hale‘iwa, Cheryl Gamiao-Herrod, 62, is said to often lead the team in prayer during postgame potlucks. She says the team and the league has been like family for her ever since she lost her husband in 2023. 

"These guys are my family. It's an extension of my family," Gamiao-Herrod said. "I look forward to games. I try to go to church, too. Just the camaraderie. Meeting people from the other team, just encouraging one another, saying 'good game' or 'nice goal,' just being positive. You can uplift somebody's day. You know, somebody might not be having a nice day. Just give them a touch on the shoulder and ask how they're doing.

"Just to encourage other women that are over 50 that life doesn't end there. They can come out and play sports just like us and exercise and stay healthy and meet friends. At the end of the day, we're all friends."

Hawaiian Council has announced its Aloha in Action Benefit Concert to raise funds for those impacted by the 

, which caused widespread flooding and damage across the state.

It is set to take place on Thursday, April 23, at the Ko Olina Grand Lawn, which is adjacent to Ulua Lagoon 4. The event starts at 5 p.m. Doors open at 3:30 p.m.

“During times like this, we come together as a community,” said Kūhiō Lewis, CEO of the Hawaiian Council, in a written statement. “We are seeing firsthand the impact on families, and we are focused on supporting them and helping communities recovery, while showing what it means to truly kākoʻo one another. As a Native Hawaiian organization, it is our kuleana to rise up and take care of Hawaiʻi and its people.”

The recent storm led to evacuation orders for residents of Haleʻiwa and Waialua. It

The Hawai‘i Supreme Court has rejected a class-action lawsuit by a group of Maui property owners over county taxes.

, updating the county’s zoning designations. In particular, it changed the county’s classification of “non-owner-occupied” condominiums, prohibiting that designation in zoning districts where transient vacation rentals were permitted.

The upshot of this is that some 1,400 condo units on Maui were, overnight, reclassified as short-term rentals, accruing taxes at short-term rental rates, regardless of whether they were actually being used as short-term rentals.

A letter by Scott Teruya — then the Finance Director for the county — projected in 2020 that the new ordinance would impact 1,428 properties, increasing their annual tax burden by an average of $6,300 each, for an aggregate of about $9.1 million in additional tax revenue.

In 2022, condo owner Steven Laub, along with a trust of other taxpayers, challenged the ordinance, filing a suit against the county that eventually went before the state’s tax appeal court.

The tax court found that there was “no rational basis to explain the classification … between neighbors who are using the property in the same way versus taxpayers who are using the property in the identical fashion but simply live under different zoning requirements.”

According to court documents, Maui County issued Laub an undisclosed sum as a refund for their excessive taxes.

However, two Kihei condo owners, Christopher and Janel Piezko, then filed in 2023 a class action suit against the county, seeking their own tax refunds.

The Piezkos claimed that they used their condo as their own vacation home and had not used it as a short-term rental. In addition, the suit that the verdict in the Laub case had found that the taxes collected via Ordinance 5160 were unconstitutional.

This case was less successful. Maui County successfully moved to dismiss the case — arguing that the Piezkos should have used the county’s administrative appeals process to resolve the matter — leading the Piezkos to appeal. The Appeals Court punted the case to the state Supreme Court, which ruled Dec. 30 in favor of the county, dismissing the case.

 that the Maui District Court — and, by extension, the Appeals Court and Supreme Court — simply do not have subject matter jurisdiction over real property tax appeals, which are better directed toward the state Tax Appeals Court, as Laub did.

But even if the Supreme Court was the appropriate venue for the Piezkos to challenge their tax assessment, Eddins opined that they were too late to do so: all tax appeals must be filed by April 9 of the tax year in question. As the Piezkos filed their suit in October 2023 regarding taxes incurred in 2021, they were more than two years late.

Ten teams of local architects, designers and engineers will build a feast for the eyes at Kāhala Mall this weekend, and the public has a chance to vote for their favorite.

The teams will use thousands of cans of food to construct elaborate 3D structures as part of AIA Honolulu's 20th annual CANstruction event.

With a theme of "ExtravaCANza," they’ll draw inspiration from "dazzling parties, glittering galas and show-stopping celebrations," an announcement from 

the Honolulu chapter of the American Institute of Architects, states.

Build Day for the professionals will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13. A Keiki Corner build is set for 10 a.m. until noon the same day.

The structures will then be on display for People's Choice voting from Sept. 13 through Saturday, Sept. 20.

The food will later be donated to Hawai‘i Foodbank while the People's Choice voting also serves as a donation to the organization — one vote is $1.

"CANstruction is an international competition that began in 1993 as a way to unite the design, engineering and construction industry around a creative, charitable cause: building large-scale structures out of canned goods, which are then donated to local food banks," Julia Fink, executive vice president of AIA Honolulu and the Center for Architecture, told Aloha State Daily in an emailed response to questions. "AIA Honolulu brought the event to Hawai‘i in 2006, partnering with Hawai‘i Foodbank, and since then it has become one of our signature community service efforts.

"We continue to host it because hunger remains a serious issue — one in three households in Hawai‘i experience food insecurity. Canstruction gives us a meaningful way to address that need while showcasing the talent of our architect members and partners. It also provides emerging professionals with an early opportunity to take on a leadership role, manage a project from concept to execution and see their work celebrated publicly."

Fink says it's "incredibly rewarding" to reach the 20th anniversary milestone.

"Over 20 years, CANstruction Honolulu has donated hundreds of thousands of cans — 

 to the Hawai‘i Foodbank and brought the community together to enjoy these playful, imaginative structures," Fink says. "The public has come to look forward to it every year, and seeing the joy it sparks is as meaningful as the donations themselves.

"The anniversary is really a moment to celebrate the event’s legacy in Hawai‘i — the partnerships it’s built, the awareness it’s raised about hunger, and the creativity it’s inspired in our community."

According to AIA Honolulu, CANstruction has collected 743,690 pounds of canned food and more than $110,000 for Hawai‘i Foodbank over the past two decades.

This year, AIA Honolulu is partnering with ChefZone, a wholesale club offering food and restaurant supplies, to source the canned goods for the competition, the announcement notes.

<title>If can, can: AIA Honolulu celebrates 20 years of CANstruction</title>

Build Day for the professionals will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13. A Keiki Corner build is set for 10 a.m. until noon the same day. The structures will then be on display for People's Choice voting from Sept. 13 through Saturday, Sept. 20.
