“It is usually better for everyone involved if the man is the achiever outside the home and the woman takes care of the family.”

Monitoring the Future, a long-running survey of American teenagers, has been tracking agreement with this statement for decades. In 2024, agreement among boys jumped to 41 percent, up from the lows of the late 2010s. Among girls, it nearly doubled to 23 percent.

 in Civil Beat this week. He warned that gender equality is under threat. The manosphere is winning. Tradwife influencers on TikTok are radicalizing your children. The Groypers, Milner explains, are a network of white nationalists, antisemites, and anti-feminists. They are the vanguard of a new and more threatening Republican Party. Democrats, he warns, have no answer.

Read the statement again. Does it condemn single mothers? Does it forbid women from working? Does it bar women from leadership? It makes a modest claim about what usually works. “Usually” is not “always.”

The wording also loads the dice against agreement. Paid work is called “achievement.” Home life is something else. A teenager who sees raising children as an achievement is nudged toward disagreement.

I generally agree with the statement, though I’d add that a woman caring for her family is achieving just as much as a man working outside the home. I suspect many readers agree.

Now look at the trend line, as analyzed at 

Agreement climbed from 1991 to a peak around 2013. It fell through the late 2010s. It rebounded in 2024 to roughly where it had been. The puzzle is not the recent rise. It is everything before it.

Teen agreement was rising for 20 years — before broadband, before the iPhone, before Instagram. No tradwife influencers existed. The manosphere had not been named. Yet the line rose. Milner does not mention this. A theory that blames TikTok for the 2024 number has to explain something: Why was the same belief already climbing, decades before TikTok arrived?

There is a risk in believing polls and not talking to people, so I asked my wife.

She is 34, too old to have grown up with tradwife content. She pointed out that most talk about sex roles frames it as a binary choice — family or career. The real question is usually sequencing.

She started having children at 19. At 34, she’s home with a 10th grader, an 8th grader, a 6th grader, and our three-year-old. Most days she takes the youngest to the park. The other mothers there often express regret — not that they had careers, but that they waited to have children.

There are inspiring stories of women starting careers at 50. There are far fewer stories of women leaving careers to give birth at 50. The order matters.

My grandmother started having her five children in her teens. She was a homemaker first and later worked as a waitress. She didn’t become the schoolteacher she once dreamed of being. She’s 94 this year, with five children, six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. A few years ago she wrote that she has no regrets.

Milner’s column performs a move Democrats have been making for a decade. Take a belief most of the Silent Generation held. Associate it with the worst actors who share some version of it. Insinuate that anyone holding the belief today must have been manipulated into it. Agreement with progressive conclusions is reasoning. Disagreement results from manipulation.

Were the Boomers who rejected traditional sex roles not also shaped by the media of their day? The universities, the press, the sitcoms that made Archie Bunker the butt of the joke?

Plenty of parties have been out of touch and recovered. The party that cannot recover is the one that treats its fellow citizens as inert clay, molded by whichever machine is in charge.

If you want to know why young people are returning to tradition, ask them. The families raising these teenagers are not a problem to be explained. They are neighbors worth listening to.

The Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum will open a new exhibit honoring the work of a trio of Hilo-based artists: 

, her husband, Sig Zane, and their son, Kūhaʻoʻīmaikalani Zane. The exhibit, called "Ea Mai ʻEiwa: Patterns of Practice," opens to the public in the J.M. Long Gallery on Saturday, April 18.

Plans for the exhibit were in the works long before Kanakaʻole, a fifth-generation master hula teacher and the youngest daughter of Edith Kanakaʻole, died on Jan. 3. Kanakaʻole and her husband, Sig Zane, co-founded 

 in 1985. Their son, Kūhaʻoʻīmaikalani Zane, was recently named chief executive officer of the design firm, which creates clothing inspired by Hawaiian plants, moʻolelo and symbols that share Hawaiian stories across the world.

When asked to describe Kanakaʻole in three-to-five words, her niece Kumu Hula Kauʻi Kanakaʻole, who is one of the co-curators of the exhibit, did not pause.

“She's a vanguard,” Kanakaʻole told Aloha State Daily. “She's like our Native Hawaiian vanguard tita.”

“She was genius in utilizing her foundation as hula practitioner, but pushing on in many different ways,” she said.

Soaring above the exhibit is Nālani Kanakaʻole’s installation, “Kūhaʻimoana,” her last large-scale work. It references “Kūhaʻimoana,” a chant that describes the migration of shark gods from the ancestral homeland of Kahiki to Hawaiʻi. The exhibit also features ʻaʻahu, or hula garments and implements designed by Kanakaʻole and made by students of Hālau o Kekuhi, which was founded by Edith Kanakaʻole, and continued by Nālani Kanakaʻole, her sister, Pualani Kanakaʻole Kanahele, and later her niece, Huihui Kanahele-Mossman. 

“My favorite part is the display of nine different ʻaʻahu that were created by Nālani Kanakaʻole and executed by her haumāna, her students,” Kanakaʻole said. “But this collection spans her career and it's informed by so many different things — mostly hula and mele.”

The exhibit includes kapa, or cloth made from bark, as well as new and archival sketches and rubylith artwork by Sig Zane from the past 35 years. It also features family photos of the Kanakaʻole ʻohana, plus memorabilia from the theatrical performance “Holo Mai Pele.” 

The show was co-curated by Sarah Kuaiwa, who is also the museum’s curator for Hawaiʻi and Pacific Cultural Resources.

“I think in the gallery, my favorite thing so far is seeing how Bishop Museum objects interact with the pieces from artists,” she said. “In some early conversations, it was really made clear that the artists have been referencing Bishop Museum collections in their artwork for many years.”

The exhibit also includes sea snail shells.

 are a type of sea snail. And what's really cool about them is that they largely live under sand and in darkness for most of their lives, and so their colors are basically absorbed from the environment that they live in.”

Conversations about the special exhibit started in fall of 2024 and continued in 2025 even as Kanakaʻole’s health declined, she said.

When asked to describe Kanakaʻole in a few words, Kuaiwa highlighted her enthusiasm for this exhibit.

“In relation to this show, she had the most tenacity of spirit,” she said. “She was the biggest supporter of this show and was very excited to be presenting works with objects from Bishop Museum, which have always inspired her and continued to influence her. I think that she had incredible discipline and vision. And we see that in the costuming that she does, but also in how many different forms of art she produced and made.”

Bishop Museum serves more than 200,000 visitors each year, including 20,000 keiki who visit as part of school trips. 

The museum is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Access to the special exhibit is included in general admission which is $33.95 to $38.95 for adults, $30.95 to $35.95 for seniors, $25.95 to $30.95 for youth and free for keiki 3 years old or younger.

It's warm and humid on this Sunday afternoon. The sky is overcast, threatening rain. All in all, it seems like a good day for a cool treat.

Others seemingly had the same thought as a short line snakes out the door at Asato Family Shop on Pali Highway in Downtown Honolulu. 

The name is written in gold above the door and in the tiles once you step inside. Orange palaka print curtains hang in the window. A menu is taped to the door. Available today are pints of sherbet in some classic Hawai‘i flavors: strawberry, pineapple and Green River. There's also Lihing float; pickled mango juice; passion orange guava, and others. Some flavors have already sold out.

April 12 was the last day the Pali Highway shop will open on Sundays for retail sales. Owner Neale Asato says the business will instead focus on scaling its wholesale operations in the coming months.

He stands outside of the small shop as he talks to Aloha State Daily but pauses to greet friends and customers as they walk up, some offering hugs and handshakes.

Asato was recently named a nominee for the 2026 James Beard Restaurant and Chef Awards in the outstanding pastry chef or baker category.

, "embody exceptional talent and leadership within the independent restaurant industry," the James Beard Foundation noted. Winners will be revealed during an awards ceremony in Chicago this June.

Although several Hawai‘i restauranteurs and chefs were named as 

 earlier this year, Asato is the only one from Hawai‘i to advance.

It's an honor to be recognized by the James Beard Foundation, Asato says but he's quick to add that his family helped build the whole business. His wife, children and parents all help out, as have his siblings. 

"I think it's great for Hawai‘i to be recognized for what we're trying to do," Asato told ASD.

Known for its sherbet made in locally inspired flavors, Asato's has been at it's Pali Highway location for a little more than seven years, but the company itself started about a year and a half before that.

Asato says his mom's family owned a number of eateries and before he was born, his parents had a restaurant.

"We all kind of grew up helping at the family restaurant," he says. "I always wanted to open something in the food industry, food business."

Asato later worked at other restaurants professionally, including a stint at Vintage Cave. He worked there for a year, "then worked some other restaurants" but decided he didn't want to focus on cooking.

"I settled on making sherbet at home and then selling it to friends and family."

Sherbet, he says, was nostalgic. His family lived on Maui when he was in preschool and would visit Tasaka Guri-Guri.

"I had no idea I could even get nominated," he says. "So that was a surprise. ... I would never call myself a pastry [chef] or a baker. Even my chef friends, I don't think anyone would call me a pastry chef or a baker."

When the finalists were announced at the end of March, Asato found out through a friend.

"My friend texted me early in the morning," Asato says. "I didn't know. I didn't check the list. I kind of forgot it was that day."

He's still shocked to be the only finalist from the Islands. There's "so much good local talent," Asato says.

When asked about the business' role in the island's overall dining ecosystem, Asato says this:

"We're just trying to preserve the flavors of our childhood growing up in Hawai‘i, from crack seed store, ... all the desserts from family potlucks," he says. "We're just trying to keep those flavors alive and share it with the next generation. That's our goal — make people happy and bring back good memories. That's what we try to do."

Where to celebrate Mother’s Day 2026 – part 2

Playwright and poet Lee Tonouchi, also known as “Da Pidgin Guerrilla,” did not imagine he would become a writer when he was growing up. But a poem he read in college, which was written in Pidgin, changed his mind.

, and he read it as part of a class at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, where he got a bachelor’s degree in English and a master’s in English with an emphasis in creative writing.

In February, Tonouchi was named the Hawaiʻi Poet Laureate. He is the third person to hold the role, which is named every three years by the Hawaiʻi State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, Hawaiʻi Council for the Humanities, and Hawaiʻi State Public Library System. This month, he is helping kamaʻāina celebrate National Poetry Month.

On Friday, April 17, Tonouchi will give the invocation at the Hawaiʻi State Legislature’s 

. The event runs from 4 to 8:30 p.m. and features Ballet Hawaiʻi, Hawaiʻi Symphony Orchestra, DJ Nate and more. Tonouchi will speak at 4:30 p.m. The event is free. 

Growing up, Tonouchi remembers his grandmother, a former plantation worker from Maui fought to be one of just a few women irrigators — a job usually reserved for men — and was “da biggest Pidgin talker,” but asked him to order at restaurants.

“She never like people hear her talk,” Tonouchi said.

Seeing that made him sad. It also got him thinking. In college, he started to write in Pidgin.

“Da Pidgin talker is always gon be perceived as being not as intelligent as da standard English talker,” Tonouchi said. “So the way I saw ʻem was you get two choices, right? You can either change yourself or try change the perception.”

He decided to dedicate his life to changing the perception. That started with incorporating Pidgin into his work in college creative writing and playwriting classes.

“And then I was like, ʻOh, if I can do my creative stuff in Pidgin, how come I no can do my critical stuff too?” he said.

Soon, he was writing 30-page research papers in Pidgin. And a master’s thesis. In 1999, he founded the literary magazine “Hybolics,” which included space for poems in Pidgin. Later, he developed the 

 at Hawaiʻi Pacific University. He also taught creative writing at Kapi‘olani Community College

. In 2023, the American Association for Applied Linguistics awarded Tonouchi the 2023 Distinguished Public Service Award for raising awareness of important social issues connected to language.

Some of his recent works include the book of poems “Significant Moments in da Life of Oriental Faddah and Son: One Hawai‘i Okinawan Journal,” the children’s picture book “Okinawan Princess: Da Legend of Hajichi Tattoos,” the edited anthology “Chiburu: Anthology of Hawai‘i Okinawan Literature”

His new role as poet laureate includes giving talks and hosting workshops. In February, he was the 2026 Writer in Residence at Punahou School, where he spent six days.

“My goal is try get people who never dreamed dey could ever write, write me something awesome,” he said.

Being a poet is not required to celebrate National Poetry Month.

“Just gotta be one fan of poetry, yeah?” he said. “And I think poetry get so many different styles that even if you no like some poetry, maybe you nevah read da right poetry yet.”

“Go borrow one book,” he said. “For me, it all started from reading ‘Tutu on the Curb.’ So maybe you gon find one poem you fully love, too. And then, oh might start one whole new career.”
