Hawai’i was named one of GoFundMe’s most generous states of 2025, the crowdfunding platform announced Tuesday.

The Aloha State ranked 13th in the company’s 2025 Year in Help report based on a yearlong analysis of the percentage of repeat donors.

California was the nation’s most generous state, followed by Vermont and Alaska. Ireland, the most generous country for the seventh consecutive year in a row, topped the U.S., measured by donors per capita.

This year, nearly 80 million donations on GoFundeMe benefited individuals and nonprofits around the globe.

“GoFundMe is unique because it brings together people and nonprofits across 20 countries to help one another,” said Tim Cadogan, CEO of GoFundMe, in a statement. “Whether people turn to the vast, engaged community on our platform to celebrate life’s greatest achievements or to support loved ones, neighbors, or causes close to their hearts, our goal is to make that easier — and to foster a trusted home for sustained help and connection. What we continue to see is that when needs grow, individuals and nonprofits respond with even more generosity.”

Locally, more than 86,000 Hawaiʻi residents donated to GoFundMe this year to causes for family, competitions and animals to business, education and emergencies. Fundraisers for Hawaiʻi businesses grew by over 40% year-over-year, per the site.

Here are a few Hawaiʻi-based fundraisers from past reporting by Aloha State Daily:

-Dakota Briley, son of Big Wave surfer Shawn Briley, in critical condition after recent pedestrian-vehicle collision in Hale‘iwa

-How to help ʻohana following the Māʻili wildfire

-Behind the scenes of Kāneʻohe’s Aloha Animal Sanctuary

The most generous Hawaiʻi resident made more than 200 donations on GoFundMe this year, according to the company, which could not provide additional information to ASD.

Other trends from GoFundMe’s report:

  • Essential expense fundraising (food, housing, etc.) rose by 20% this year.
  • Increased amount of fundraisers created for food banks than any other community cause.
  • Fundraisers for volunteering tripled.
  • $330 million was raised for natural disaster relief
  • More than 80,000 organizers activated for a nonprofit cause

GoFundMe’s first donation 15 years ago was a $100 gift to charity. Since 2010, it has helped raise more than $40 billion for over 166,000 nonprofits. For more information, go to: gofundme.com
