Like most properties in Honolulu, this plot of land has seen many uses over the past 200 years. In the days of Kamehameha I, when John Papa ‘I‘i was at court, the parcel of land at the ‘Ewa-Mauka corner of Merchant and Bethel Streets contained the hale (houses) of lesser ali‘i.

These low-ranking chiefs often managed local lands, collected food and goods as tribute for the ali‘i nui, served as warriors, maintained community order, and acted as intermediaries between the maka‘āinana (commoners) and the ruling class. But Kamehameha and most of his court only stayed a few years, moving to Hawai‘i Island in 1812.

In 1854, the Privy Council received a petition requesting a lot on which to build a Sailor’s Home. Meant to provide safe, inexpensive lodging and support for merchant seamen, these homes were a purposeful alternative to waterfront taverns. The petition was granted under strict conditions: no intoxicating liquors, no gambling, no disorder, and no women of "lewd" character allowed. The Sailor’s Home welcomed countless seamen until it was damaged in the fires of 1886, after which it relocated to a large, grassy lot between Richards and Alakea Streets.

Originally founded in Japan in 1880, the Yokohama Specie Bank opened its Honolulu branch in 1892 to serve Japanese merchants and plantation workers. The bank first operated from offices inside the Japanese consulate, and quickly became a trusted financial anchor for a growing community.

In 1908, in response to Honolulu’s growth, construction began on a permanent bank on the corner of Merchant and Bethel Streets where the Sailor’s Home once stood. The yellow brick building was completed in 1910 with elaborate terracotta ornamentation over its arched entrances and oculi, the circular openings at the top of the building. It was proclaimed completely fireproof when it opened because the brick-and-steel building had no exposed wood. It had copper-clad doors and sashes, and the window casings were copper-clad wood and marble.  

While Chinese and Hawaiians held accounts there, most of its depositors were Japanese. The building served as the bank’s Hawaiʻi headquarters for more than three decades, giving the community a sense of permanence. But that all ended on December 7, 1941.

On the day of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Territorial Governor Joseph Poindexter ordered the immediate closure of three Japanese banks in Hawai‘i. The Yokohama Specie Bank was seized and repurposed. During the war years, it functioned as a military police station, allowing MPs to coordinate with the Honolulu Police Department then headquartered across the street. Offices that once held ledgers and account books were used to store confiscated goods, while the basement was renovated to include toilets, showers, and barred cells to serve as a lockup for drunk soldiers.

In 1954, the U.S. Department of Justice, acting through its Alien Property Custodian, sold the building. It was then leased to the City of Honolulu for use as the Traffic Citation Bureau. Since that time, the building has seen many different occupants. Newspaper advertisements show an investment firm housed there in the 1960s, and the building was home to the Honolulu Magazine offices from 1982 to 2001.

In 2004, the historic building became home to The Cole Academy, a daycare and preschool founded by news editor Gina Mangieri and named for her son. Here begins our account of its ghost stories.

When the school was still operating in the old building, a friend of ours who worked at the academy spent long days teaching there. She shared her tales of strange happenings at the former bank with us.

In the basement, she often went down to do laundry. To keep the heavy door from closing, the staff often propped it open with a paint can. More than once, as our friend turned her back to sort clothes, she heard the scrape of metal on concrete. The door would swing closed on its own as if someone had deliberately moved the paint can. There was no wind in the basement, and no explanation she could ever find.

In the infant room, the babies sometimes behaved in ways that unsettled the caregivers. The infants would laugh and smile, reaching upward with open hands as their eyes stared at something above them. Nothing was there that the adults could see, yet the children’s attention moved as though they were following a presence floating above them.

There was a former teacher who had taken her own life one night on a lonely beach. Once in a while, when all was quiet, staff would catch a brief glimpse of her. Someone would notice the sway of long dreadlocks disappearing around a corner, or experience the sense of someone just out of sight in certain hallways. Though they never fully saw her, they believed it was their lost coworker.

Upstairs, older students spoke freely about someone they called “Uncle.” They talked about him as if he were familiar and kind.

“Uncle’s happy you’re here,” they would say, “He’s protecting us.”

Although the teachers never saw anyone, the children spoke as if “Uncle” were an actual person. They didn’t seem to be afraid of him, and they never questioned his presence.

Additionally, cameras often revealed orbs drifting through rooms when no one was there. The teachers from the infant room saw them too, small points of light seeming to move with intention around the children.

A few years ago, I was asked to come and bless the building. My friend and her coworker showed me around and pointed out the staircase leading to the basement. I looked down and watched in confusion as a red rubber ball bounced up the stairs. Up, up, up it traveled until it reached the floor in front of me. Then it rolled past slowly down the hall. Needless to say, something wanted my attention.

The building never felt violent. Just occupied. It almost seemed as if some of its former occupants enjoyed their time there and simply decided to stay.

The new year brings us old issues of grave concern and unfortunately antisemitism is at the top of mind, even here in Hawai‘i.

OCTOBER 18, 2023: Two hooded men threw Molotov cocktails at a synagogue in central Berlin.

NOVEMBER 16, 2023: A 53-year-old man was arrested in Tokyo after crashing a car into a barricade near the entrance of the Israeli embassy and injuring a police officer.

MAY 17, 2024: French police shot dead a knife-wielding Algerian man who set fire to a synagogue and threatened police in the city of Rouen.

JUNE 2024: A Jordanian national broke into a solar power generation facility in Wedgefield, Florida, and caused more than $450,000 in damage. In May 2025, he was sentenced to six years in U.S. federal prison for threats against and attacks on businesses over their perceived support for Israel, after pleading guilty in December.

SEPTEMBER 5, 2024: German police shot dead an Austrian suspected Islamist in Munich in an exchange of fire close to the Israeli consulate.

SEPTEMBER 6, 2024: Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, a Pakistani citizen living in Canada, was arrested and charged with planning a mass shooting at a Jewish center in Brooklyn around October 7, 2024 in support of Islamic State, the Department of Justice said.

OCTOBER 10, 2024: A shooting took place near an Israeli target in the city of Gothenburg, which Denmark's national broadcaster said was a unit of Israeli defense electronics firm Elbit Systems.

JANUARY 17, 2025: A home in Sydney previously owned by a senior Jewish community leader was vandalized and two cars were set on fire, with one spray-painted with an antisemitic slur.

JANUARY 21, 2025: A childcare center in Sydney was set alight and antisemitic graffiti was sprayed on the wall.

MAY 22, 2025: Two Israeli embassy staffers were 

OCTOBER 2, 2025: A man drove a car into pedestrians and stabbed a security guard, 

killing at least two people and seriously

 at a synagogue in Manchester where worshippers were marking Yom Kippur.

DECEMBER 14, 2025: Two men, a father and son, used high powered rifles to attack celebrants at a Hanukkah event on Bondi Beach, Sydney, Australia. 15 lives were taken including a 10-year-old child. Authorities confirm Jewish attendees were targets.

These are a select few of a voluminous number of attacks on Jewish people and these are the attacks that are reported while so very many are not.

There may be explanations proffered to explain the burgeoning amount of antisemitism in America and worldwide.

[{"type":"text","text":"It's a reflection of the ever constant deterioration of humanity."}]

To bolster my claim, antisemitism is just one of the growing numbers of -isms in our collective cultures.

Some examples of pervasive toxic “-isms” 

 "racism, sexism, ageism, ableism, heterosexism (i.e., homophobia

“-isms” are the behavioral manifestation of bias, conscious or unconscious, that reinforce oppression and inequities in our culture."

Regarding antisemitism it's referred to as "The Longest Hatred" with roots dating back to the times of Jesus Christ. A foundational basis of this hatred stems from the fallacy that Jews killed Jesus. It was the hierarchal Jewish leaders of the day that used the occupying Romans to fuel their political objective to eliminate Jesus without doing it themselves. Roman leader Pontius Pilate ordered the killing of Christ, and he had the option of preserving His life which he did not.

The Jews did not kill Christ. The Romans did. (This was affirmed by the Roman Catholic Church at Second Vatican.) 

The longevity of "The Longest Hatred" is rife with rationale for antisemitism. The intensity of this hatred continued bolstered by false claims that Jew were responsible for the Black Plague. Why? Anecdotally the Jewish survival rates exceeded all others sparking claims the Jews must have created and spread the Black Plague to fulfill their plans to literally take over the world.

The likelihood of increased survival is attributable to lifestyle fundamentals including personal hygiene and refusal to store exposed food products in the home. Consequentially infected fleas in concert with host rats could not gravitate to the aforementioned food sources, hence a lower infection rate. And, of course, death visited Jews as well. 

Over the centuries antisemitism remained a constant. A continuation of hatred was advanced including rumormongering that the obstinate Jew by not accepting Christ and their Lord and Savior leading to allegations of demon worship and more.

Martin Luther during the reformation of the catholic church continued the inflammation of rhetoric concerning Jews. The rejection of Jews within communities led to them turning to mega unpopular commerce such as moneylending which further perpetuated "The Longest Hate." 

However the discrimination was fueled by the religious leaders and authors of differing faiths.

Some Christians such as the Catholic priest 

, who published the first French translation of the 

, combined religious and racial antisemitism, as in his statement that "From the triple viewpoint of race, of nationality, and of religion, the Jew has become the enemy of humanity." The virulent antisemitism of 

, one of the most widely read Catholic writers in France during the Dreyfus Affair, likewise combined religious and racial antisemitism. Drumont founded the

Adolph Hitler embraced and utilized historic yet virulent and hateful writings from the past and invoked them before, during and after his rise to evil power. At the core of Nazism was the notion that it was the Jew who was sub-human and served as an infection to all especially the proclaimed perfect Aryan man, woman and child. By attaching blame to Jews for the, yes, grievous economic and militaristic conditions in post-World War I Germany, Hitler succeeded in convincing most Germans that the future of Aryan Germany was reliant upon the eradication of Jews.

We're all aware of what transpired which further personified "The Longest Hatred" six million times over.

Holocaust denial, the claim that the Nazi genocide of European Jews during the 

 either never happened or is substantially exaggerated by historical accounts, is a form of antisemitism and conspiracy theory. Political movements seeking to revive the ideologies of the Nazis and other states that participated in the Holocaust, like

There is significant debate about whether 

analogies between Israel's treatment of Palestinians and the Nazis' treatment of Jews

 are antisemitic. Those who say they are antisemitic have termed such analogies "Holocaust inversion" — a form of Holocaust trivialization in which the Holocaust is compared with other events in a way that downplays its severity. Some maintain Holocaust inversion as a type of Holocaust denial.

As I mentioned earlier, there are a myriad of explanations as to why antisemitism exists even today. And we're not exempted in the land of Aloha in the middle of the Pacific.

Why would anonymous individuals terrorize Hawai‘i synagogues with threats of bombing them and their place of worship? Yes, it has recently happened here 

and Kīhei, Maui, and while the Kīhei threat was determined to be a 

, it was one that derived its power from all the attacks that are all too real. Temple El-Emmanuel in Nu‘uanu has faced 

 in the past requiring key code access, omnipresent security cameras and moving in potted plants to prevent IEDs to be used to inflict damage or even worse.

There can be explanations ranging from verbose psychoanalytical pronouncements by professionals to a guy in a bar that simply says that people suck.

I don't know why because I don't understand nor relate to the ism sentiments and how one can spew hatred, inflict terror upon others and commit crimes of abject violence simply based on ones inexplicable hatred of a faith or a race.

I can only infer there are those that are filled with hatred and rage and Jews make a convenient target. Jews serve as an imagined justifiable vehicle to release their hatred and rage although the random selection of any ism would serve their evil purpose.

Diana Birkett Rakow has been at the helm of Hawaiian Airlines for just over two months.

Formerly the senior vice president of public affairs and sustainability at Alaska Airlines

 of Hawaiian in September and stepped into the role in late October.

Alaska Air Group Inc. and Hawaiian Holdings Inc. 

 that Alaska Airlines would acquire Hawaiian Airlines in a deal that was valued at approximately $1.9 billion, including $900 million of Hawaiian’s net debt, according to an announcement at that time. The acquisition was 

 of Hawaiian Airlines at that time, part of an interim Honolulu leadership team that would help guide the airlines through the process of obtaining a single operating certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration.

Birkett Rakow became CEO on Oct. 29, the same day that Alaska Airlines received that 

 from the FAA, a major milestone in the efforts to integrate the operations of the two airlines. 

Both airlines, though, will maintain their individual brands.

During a Jan. 5 press conference at the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, she announced the 

, Hawaiian Airline’s new five-year, $600 million investment that she said aims to modernize its airport spaces, aircraft cabins and technology; expand loyalty benefits for Hawai‘i residents; and support community and sustainability efforts statewide.

Aloha State Daily caught up with Birkett Rakow briefly after Monday’s press conference.

How are things going two months on the job?

“Great,” she says. “The people are incredible. The team members are amazing and I’ve had the great opportunity to get out and work with some of them in maintenance, on the ramp and at the gate, and will continue to do that. It’s a great way to learn. And we’ve got a lot of change going on. We pushed a lot of change through the system with guests and employees and our technology all at the same time. It's not all easy, but I think we’re heading into a place where we can stabilize, we can work on these investments, we can bring our ticketing systems together, which is going to make life better for everybody.”

When asked about her goals in this role, Birkett Rakow says she’s been working on "this combination since the beginning." She was responsible for Alaska’s business in Hawai‘i, “so I’ve cared a lot about this going well,” she told ASD. “My goal is that we successfully bring this combination together and do it in a way that is positive for Hawai‘i.”

As for the newly announced Kahu‘ewai plan, Birkett Rakow says it’s been in the works for nearly a year.

“We started to build the idea as we’ve been getting feedback from employees and guests, and then started to put a more structured plan together over the last probably six, nine months.”

These investments, she says, are good for both the business and the state.

“We rely so much on transportation here, we want to make sure that our guests have a great experience, local guests as well as visitors, and that we’re continuing to invest in a sustainable business.”

 has a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Harvard University and master's degree in public health and public administration from the University of Washington, and had been with Alaska for eight years.

She previously held senior executive roles at Group Health and Kaiser Permanente, and was a health policy adviser for the U.S. Senate Finance Committee.

, Alaska and Hawaiian carried more than 55 million passengers on more than 486,000 flights across their combined global network, and carried more than 40,000 tons of cargo to and from communities across Alaska, Hawai‘i and the Pacific.

It’s never too late to make resolutions about how we can improve ourselves.

This applies as well to our state lawmakers, who will gather later this month for another legislative session that, for good or bad, will affect all of us who live in these beautiful Hawaiian Islands.

With that in mind, here are actions I suggest they could resolve to do during the year ahead:

The analogy here is to cut out the junk food and empty calories. Any nutritionist will tell you that many people underestimate how much they eat in a day, especially when it comes to snacks and treats. Well, little spending increases and pet projects are the cookies and potato chips of the state budget. Taken by themselves, they seem harmless enough, but add them all up and you get budget bloat.

If you can’t stomach going on a crash diet of major spending cuts, then say no to the little temptations. Refrain from tacking on new spending, no matter how small, and approach requests for more spending by asking if it’s really within your “diet.” Maybe post a photo of a nice, slim, balanced budget on your fridge for inspiration.

It’s easy to make big promises when things look good, but don’t back out of those commitments as soon as the road gets a little bumpy. If you promised Hawaiʻi residents meaningful housing reforms or the biggest income tax cut in state history, don’t wimp out.

Challenges are a fact of life, an opportunity to demonstrate how deep your commitment goes. Turning back on a major promise is something that voters will remember for a long time, regardless of how good your reasons for doing so might be.

As the old saying goes, sunlight is the best disinfectant, and right now it seems there is much at the Legislature that needs disinfecting. True corruption is part of the problem, but the simple lack of transparency in the political process itself also feeds the public’s perception that lawmakers aren’t being honest with us.

To promote public trust, lawmakers should insist on no more short-form or “blankety-blank” bills that pass through hearings without all the information the public needs to reasonably judge them.

Also, no more bills get passed from committee to committee only to die before a final floor vote at the hands of just a few legislators.

And no more “Yes, with reservations” votes; if you’re against a bill, vote against it openly.

SO THERE YOU ARE, three simple resolutions for the Legislature in 2026: Go on a diet, keep your promises and increase government transparency.

If our lawmakers can stick to these resolutions, this year could be a great one for everyone who lives and works in Hawaiʻi.

The people have voted and three Hawai‘i eateries have made the list of 

 in the USA Today 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards. The awards aim to rank the 10 best in several areas of travel and lifestyle.

The three restaurants were among the field of 20 vying for a spot on the list. Voting took place in December and the winners were announced Jan. 2.

, located at 116 Wailea Ike Dr. Suite 2204, in Wailea, tops the list at No. 1. The eatery invites visitors to “come as they are for every occasion” and aims to “forge a meaningful connection between the food, the island and the community,” its website states. Chef Chris Cosentino is a Top Chef Masters winner and James Beard Award nominee.

, located at 1312 Front St. in Lahaina. The restaurant is a casual dining spot led by owner and Chef Alvin Savella that offers “a blend of Mexican, local, American and seafood cuisine,” its website notes. Read

Isaiah Corpus, 25, who is from Wahiawā and raised in Waiʻanae, said that he knew as a teenager that he wanted to run his own retail store someday.

“I am the first member of my family to have a store on my own and am proud to have started this business by myself,”

I’ve always been an ocean and beach enthusiast: I taught myself to surf and kayak. I helped at beach cleanups and always want to give back to the ocean and marine life. That’s how I created my business.”

About a year ago, Corpus hatched the plan for 

Shop Kainalu, a Hawaiʻi inspired lifestyle and apparel brand, set to open this spring in Seattle, where he has lived since 2024. 

He added that the initial investment for the venture came from his savings.

said he took a few business classes and met mentors and coaches, who helped with the paperwork like applying for a state business license.

“I didn’t realize how long it would take to retrieve, but despite that, it all worked out in the end,” he said. "Iʻm excited to have my business out there and to launch soon."

While his primary job is with a major U.S. airline, Corpus said, he currently operates a one-man shop, overseeing the fashion and graphic design elements of its products, as well as renovating the new space located between Seattle's University District and Lower Queen Anne, which is expected “to take a couple more months,” he noted.

The store is slated to open in May, with a traditional Hawaiian blessing, he said. Other priorities for Corpus ahead of the launch include working on finalizing the website (currently down), hand drawing more designs to ramp up inventory, while recruiting brand ambassadors and, eventually, a team for the store.

When asked what makes Shop Kainalu stand out, he told ASD, “I use eco-friendly materials such as organic cotton, recycled fabrics and renewable textiles that reduce waste, preserve resources and eliminate harmful chemicals, embracing innovative, slow impact production methods for my store. I want to ensure that every clothing item I make not only elevates modern style but also protects the ocean.”

The brand will soon offer tees, totes, swimwear, and a range of other everyday essentials for men, women, and the home, according to 

The biz’s name in Native Hawaiian means ocean wave, which he says “integrates my purpose behind my story. … On a personal level, [I'm] always surfing, going to the beach, so when you shop at my store, you shop to care for the environment, that’s how the name came up.”

In Seattle, he continues to volunteer at cleanups and noted that a portion of the proceeds from the shop with go toward local ocean conservation groups and nonprofits.  

As a new small business owner, Corpus said he’s "still in the learning process" but has already found support from Seattle- and Hawaiʻi-owned small businesses alike.

Born and raised on Oʻahu, Isaiah Corpus plans to launch Shop Kainalu, a Hawaiʻi inspired lifestyle and apparel brand, in Washington where he now lives. Corpus, a self-described ocean and beach enthusiast, discusses the details leading up to its spring debut, as well as his hope to open another retail store in his island home.
