The transportation company Roberts Hawaiʻi will open Limelight Hawaiʻi, a new entertainment venue focused on the kamaʻāina market next month, Roy E. Pfund, the company’s president and CEO, told Aloha State Daily. The venue, which was once Hawaiian Hut, is located on the grounds of the Ala Moana Hotel and will soft open on March 20.

Originally, Roberts Hawai’i purchased the venue as a place for its long-running show, Magic of Polynesia, which had been at the Waikīkī Beachcomber by Outrigger hotel. When the Covid-19 pandemic hit, that show closed, and Roberts Hawaiʻi decided to reimagine the space as one that could serve kama’āina.

Limelight Hawaiʻi is a 6,000-square foot space designed to accommodate weddings, corporate events, fashion shows, and high-level night club entertainment. It can fit up to 700 guests with a stage and 400 guests with table service. The space can accommodate just under 900 with no furniture, he said. The total investment — including buying the space — was about $15 million, Pfund said.

“We're really focusing on the kamaʻāina market,” he said. “And from the history part of how Covid impacted our company —  everything got shut down on the tourism side, and it took a while to build back — I think that was one of the main reasons why we looked at shifting to diversify our base, seeking a greater portion of our business outside the direct tourism industry.”

Roberts Hawaiʻi offers transportation packages to popular tourism attractions on Oʻahu, Maui, Hawaiʻi Island and Kauaʻi, including natural sites, such as 

, and events, such as Germaine’s Lūʻau and Chief’s Lūʻau in Kapolei. The company also operates 

Roberts Hawaiʻi is still in the “hiring mode” for this venue, Pfund added. Eventually, he expects between 50 and 60 employees will be working at this space.

“One of the good things is we do have a large employee base because we're an employee-owned company, an ESOP [employee stock ownership plan] company,” he said. “Hopefully, we can draw on some of the existing employee base, as well, to fill in. Because you have events when you may need a lot of people, and then other days, you're going to need less people, so I think that does help provide some staffing flexibility for us.”

has a 4K LED screen, lights and a sound system. Kalani Rodrigues of OnStage Hawaiʻi, was a consultant for lighting, he added. For audio, they brought in a person who handles sound for national touring acts.

The space can be used for parties and meetings during the day and pau hana with live entertainment in the evenings, Pfund said. On the weekends, especially Fridays and Saturdays, Roberts Hawaiʻi may also bring back some kind of nightclub entertainment, he added. There will also be brunches for special holidays, such as Mother’s Day.

The executive chef for Limelight Hawaiʻi is Jim Gillespie. He brings more than 30 years of experience across Hawaiʻi’s hospitality industry, including executive leadership roles at 3660 on the Rise, Plaza Club, and Sunset Bar & Grill. Jeff Marcello has been named the venue’s general manager. 

“Limelight Hawaiʻi brings together the highest-quality audio and production technology available in a venue of this kind in Hawaii,” said Marcello, in a written statement. “But technology is only part of the story. We set out to create a truly versatile space where live music, conferences, weddings and corporate events are not only supported — but elevated. That same philosophy carries through our menus, which fuse island-inspired flavors with modern favorites, thoughtfully extended into our culinary offerings, craft cocktails, and beverage program. The result is a gathering place designed to flex with the needs of our community, giving both locals and visitors a reason to think of Limelight first for their next celebration.”

The venue has already broadcast its first Super Bowl for an internal audience, and the halftime show; with the volume turned up, it sounded like a concert, Pfund said.

“We did our own Super Bowl preview,” Pfund said. “It works great, showing the Super Bowl on that big screen — that type of thing is what we really are looking at doing. Providing really the opportunity for more kamaʻāina events. So, our focus really is on the local market, as opposed to creating a showroom for some kind of tourist show or that type of thing.”

The business’s second store is located in Kāhala — specifically Kāhala Korner, the same plaza where 

The new store — which is in the former Subway space — will be open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Due to its size, this location is more conducive to takeout.

While this store is smaller than the business’s Downtown Honolulu location, it includes some of its most popular features.

Customers can take advantage of the store’s smoothie machine and DIY ramen machine. Smoothies ($4.99 each) come in flavors like acai; strawberry and banana; and blueberry, strawberry and banana.

Customers can also choose from the extensive ramen selection, then use the machines to cook their ramen.

The store also features a large selection of grab-and-go hot and cold foods.

Hot foods include fried mandoo ($3.39), potato corndogs ($3.49), and tornado potatoes ($3.49). The latter — which features a crispy, spiral-cut potato on a stick — is a customer favorite.

Cold options include sweet and savory sandwiches, musubi, and kimbap.

Similar to its Downtown Honolulu location, this store offers a variety of assorted snacks and customizable drinks.

For many of us, recollections of Paradise Park in Mānoa evoke memories of school field trips and weekend adventures with the family. Walking down the spiral entrance and finding your way through the maze, you might have seen a couple getting married in the gardens. Large bird cages held all sorts of tropical birds that chirped and squawked as you passed. Quite often, a gentle rain cooled you off as you followed the pathways, and then the mist gave way to sunshine once more.

Although the park closed in 1994, the property hasn’t been completely abandoned. The main building holds offices and a visitor’s center with a snack shop, restrooms, and activity rooms. The Halau features a gallery with numerous works by local artists and is available for meetings and events, such as instructional classes or storytelling events. Next to the Halau, the Classroom with its mirror-lined walls, is a hub for diverse dance classes, featuring weekly, in-person sessions that include Scottish Country Dancing, international folk dance, ‘Ori Tahiti (Tahitian dance), and more.

Visitors who hike the Mānoa Falls Trail will find a place to use the restroom, grab a snack, and relax a bit in the visitor’s center. And if you’re lucky enough to run into Aunty Pua, she might have time to tell you about the hauntings in the area.

Down in the park below the main building, nature has moved in, covering nearly everything with vines, mold, and moss. The gardens have all grown over the asphalt paths, leaving narrow, vague remnants of walkways. The remaining buildings in the park are now unstable, often damaged by fallen branches, and their walls are rotted by the continuous moisture of the valley. Fallen trees are left where they fell, no one remaining to clean them up.

Yet the quiet that settled over the grounds was never complete. Long after the birds were gone and the gates closed, caretakers began to speak of strange happenings. In a valley already steeped in legend, it wasn’t long before Paradise Park earned a reputation not just as a place of fond remembrance, but as a place where something still walks after dark.

According to Aunty Pua, a maintenance manager used to see a column of smoke in the mornings, moving down the pathway. He swears it wasn’t mist that often settles in the valley. This smoke seemed to move with a purpose. In another instance, a groundskeeper was catching chickens by the amphitheater one day when something grabbed him from behind and slammed him to the ground, holding him there. When he was finally able to get up, no one was around him. Night marchers are often said to appear as moving columns of smoke or mist, and one is advised to lie face down while in their presence.

and Hawaiʻi Five-0 also reported unsettling poltergeist activity around their food service areas. One incident, centered on a catering truck parked near the park’s amphitheater, so frightened the crew that they refused to return to that location. 

Upstairs in the restaurant, personnel would make a point of leaving by 10 p.m. If they dared to stay any later, they would experience the stoves and lights turning on and off by themselves. Some say it was almost like a “last call” or a “hurry up and leave” signal. Film productions that used the restaurant reported hearing giggling from a girl, and numerous workers saw a woman with wild hair and crazy eyes.

Even the parking lot is not without its own share of hauntings. As the site of several deaths due to accidents and suicides, people have claimed to see dark figures moving in the shadows.

In that dark parking lot, I had a brief conversation with a friend of mine by the name of Dexter Lum. He was the man whom I referred to as my “Sifu” in the craft of Freemasonry. Dexter had reached the height of all levels that a practitioner could reach in our fraternity, except that of the Grandmaster of all masons in the state. But even without the title of a Grandmaster, Dexter still held a measure of influence within the craft. However, when Dexter was in Blue Lodge, he was simply my Sifu, and he helped me understand the particulars of what is required to become proficient in my degree work as a Freemason.

Several years ago, Dexter Lum was killed in a tragic car accident in that same parking lot. I can’t say for sure that Dexter is stuck in that location due to the trauma of his death, but the fact that I had a conversation with his consciousness, his soul, his entity, whatever you want to call it, means that his ghost or spirit is cognizant to a degree. However, he may not be fully aware that he has passed. 

More than a few people have felt an unnerving presence in the lot at night. One of the former restaurant managers used to leave flowers as offerings in the parking lot to appease the spirits, hoping they would leave the restaurant alone.

Today, Paradise Park stands suspended between memory and mystery. What was once a place of celebration and song now rests quietly beneath a canopy of trees, overtaken by the forest. Whether the strange occurrences are echoes of the past or simply imagination, the valley has always carried a spiritual weight that demands respect.

But keep in mind that the park below the main building is closed to the public. There is no circumstance under which anyone is permitted to enter the abandoned grounds without the express permission of the property owners. While the stories may be intriguing and the atmosphere undeniably eerie, the structures are unstable, the terrain hazardous, and the risks very real. Paradise Park may be haunted, but it’s also very dangerous.

[{"type":"text","text":"Tom Pōhaku Stone says he was born to the ocean."}]

A renowned big wave surfer and waterman, Stone is a superb athlete and a self-avowed thrill-seeker with the scars to prove it and countless stories of danger and near-death experiences.

He is also a cultural practitioner, a master carver, an educator, and a Ph.D. candidate credited with almost single-handedly reviving heʻe hōlua (land sledding) and is considered to be Hawaiʻi’s foremost expert in the sport.

Heʻe Hōlua as practiced by our ancestors was an extreme sport unique to Hawaiʻi.

Slides varied tremendously in terms of length, incline, and difficulty. Some were grass slides used for training or recreation. Others were slides built with stones and then covered with hard-packed cinder for more serious competition by aliʻi. The slides were often strewn with pili grass or sugar cane tassels to decrease friction.

Many of the longer slides started up ma uka and ended at the coastline – some at ocean cliffs. The longest and best-preserved rock slide is Kāneaka at Keauhou on Hawaiʻi Island, which, when first constructed, extended about a mile from the hillside to Heʻeia Bay.

Papa hōlua (sleds) range from 12- to 18-feet-long, but are only about six inches wide. They consist of two runners (kāmaʻaloa) made with native hardwoods like kauila lashed to crosspieces (keʻa) made from ʻohe (bamboo). Smaller rails (papa) lashed to the crosspieces served as a platform and hand rails. The kāmaʻaloa were often lubricated with kukui nut oil to make them slide even faster.

Marvels of engineering and design, the aerodynamically constructed sleds can be ridden prone on one’s belly, kneeling, or standing upright, and can travel at speeds in excess of 75 mph.

The practice of hōlua served many purposes. For most people, most of the time, it was purely a fun and thrilling amusement. It was a favorite Makahiki pastime, and spectators would bet on their favorite riders.

Hōlua was also used ritualistically by aliʻi, as portrayed in Apple TV’s "Chief of War." “The aliʻi nui had to perform, to show they’re willing to die if they wanted to lead,” Stone said. “Even though it’s Hollywood style, 'Chief of War' is a great visual of who we were as a people and how we dealt with things.”

Once believed to be a sport reserved for male aliʻi, traditional accounts of the sport describe both male and female riders – commoners and aliʻi alike – prior to western influence. In fact, the best known moʻolelo about hōlua features Pele who rode her papa hōlua on a wave of lava to defeat Kahawali, a prideful young chief from Puna, in a race that nearly killed him.

Growing up, Stone spent a lot of time in Waikīkī where his tūtū made and sold lei. After helping her, he would go down to the beach and hang out around the beach boys. It was Duke Kahanamoku who helped Stone catch his first wave when he was just 5 years old.

Stone was hooked. Whenever he was in Waikīkī, after helping to sell lei, he was at the beach raking the sand until one of the beach boys put a board into the water for him to surf. A young beach boy, Joey Gerard, was one of his greatest influences, “that’s how I started surfing bigger waves – it’s because of Joey Gerard,” Stone recalled.

Having been pegged by his kūpuna as “athletic,” at the age of 4 Stone was sent to live with his great uncle John Solomon, a Kohala rancher. Solomon had no children so the plan was to hānai Stone and have him take over the ranch. “I was being raised to be a cowboy but Uncle John found me very difficult because I was always drawn to the ocean,” he laughed. Stone lived primarily with Solomon for two years.

Whenever he was on Oʻahu, Stone also spent a lot of time with his maternal grandfather, David Kahanu, in Kāneʻohe. “And that’s how we get to hōlua,” Stone explained. “He was training me to learn about it.”

Kahanu told stories about hōlua riding and took young Stone ti-leaf sliding on grassy Kāneʻohe hillsides and mud sliding in Nuʻuanu Valley. He also took him to a grove of mango trees above Pālolo Valley and challenged Stone to jump from tree to tree all the way down into the valley. “He was teaching me to commit; to focus on what I was doing and not to hesitate,” Stone reflected.

Kahanu was one of Stone’s most significant relationships as a child. “I loved being with him whenever I had a chance because that was where he would tell me the stories over a cup of tea and crackers. And then he left, you know, he passed away. So that was that.”

[{"type":"text","text":"A cultural and political awakening"}]

Like many young Hawaiians coming of age in the late 1960s, Stone was increasingly dissatisfied and angry about things he couldn’t quite articulate. Outside of surfing and his interest in ocean sports, he was unfocused and got in trouble with the law.

He dropped out of high school and later joined the military. After being discharged, Stone worked for the City & County of Honolulu as an ocean safety officer and spent his free time surfing and windsurfing.

Then, on Jan. 17, 1993, Stone participated in the ʻOnipaʻa March marking 100 years since the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom. At ʻIolani Palace, he heard the late Haunani Kay Trask’s now-famous speech in which she asserted “We are not Americans! We will never be Americans!”

Hearing those words in that moment was transformational for Stone. He completed his GED, enrolled at Windward Community College (WCC), and never looked back.

[{"type":"text","text":"Reviving the art and practice of heʻe hōlua"}]

A research assignment for a Hawaiian culture class at WCC with Kumu Kalani Meinecke, inspired Stone to learn more about hōlua. “Everyone was focusing on voyaging. But I wanted to focus on what my tūtūkāne had been teaching me and research something nobody knew anything about. That’s how it all began.”

So in 1994, with Meinecke’s support, Stone began learning everything he could about hōlua.

He not only wrote a research paper, but built a papa hōlua (sled) that he named Keahiokekai.

His sled was constructed based on descriptions found in 

 by Māori anthropologist Sir Peter H. Buck (Te Rangi Hīroa). The description lacked details on how to lash the runners to the crosspieces, so Stone improvised and used canoe lashing techniques.

Stone is quick to point out that reviving hōlua wasn’t his accomplishment alone. His WCC classmates, the late Kilohana Duarte and Anne Campbell (now his wife), were his partners. “They were with me almost from day one. The three of us were on this journey.”

Already in his 40s, Stone channeled his talent for big wave riding and began teaching himself to heʻe hōlua. He took his papa hōlua to Maui to ride an ancient slide at ʻUlupalakua, but the tips of his runners broke off in transit. He was still able to ride it, but later took his papa hōlua to Hawaiʻi Island intending to burn it since it was damaged.

Stone went down to Kīholo Bay and left his papa hōlua on the shore while he gathered wood for a fire. When he returned, there were six large honu (turtles) resting on it. Stone took this as a hōʻailona (sign). He did not burn his papa hōlua that day. In fact, he still rides it.

By 1997, Stone had already built several papa hōlua and so was allowed access to the only surviving pre-contact papa hōlua which was housed at Bishop Museum. Stone spent years studying its construction.

“The engineering that goes into hōlua construction is ancient. It’s about balance and flexibility. It’s both scientific and symbolic. If you make the papa hōlua rigid it’s going to break at high speed. You have to build that sense of unified flexibility into it. That’s the most important thing.”

[{"type":"text","text":"Divine inspiration and the role of women in hōlua"}]

Between 1994 and 1998 Stone had a series of vivid dreams. In his dreams he walked the land with a woman he did not know. Eventually, they ended up at Halemaʻumaʻu in Kīlauea and he recognized the woman as Pele. In his dream, Pele explained the proper technique for lashing hōlua.

“I woke up at like 1:00 in the morning, went outside, took it apart, and re-lashed it traditionally,” Stone said.

Hōlua lashing requires a circular double wrap – a pattern that allows the sled’s runners to open slightly and flex forward and backwards. It takes about 375 consecutive feet of sennit.

But Stone learned more than hōlua lashing techniques from his dreams. He also came to understand the important role that women played in hōlua. “My mom always told me when a kupuna visits you, be open and go on the journey. So I did. And I learned more within those moeʻuhane than I learned from my research.”

He learned that the papa hōlua he studied at Bishop Museum was named Lonoikamakahiki and had belonged to Kanemuna, a woman from Hoʻokena. “And then I started to realize, as I searched for hōlua slides, they all have wāhine names.”

According to Stone, the prominence of women in the sport – and it’s connection to female deities like Pele – made hōlua a target of missionaries who not only wanted to suppress traditional religion, but also the prominence of women in Hawaiian society to align with western notions of male dominance and female subservience.

He believes that this is why so little is known about hōlua, and why so few hōlua slides remain.

“In Hawaiian culture, wāhine are more important [than men] because they carry the moʻokūʻauhau,” said Stone. “Hawaiian women had more political, social and spiritual capital than their western counterparts, which clashes with the conventional western Judeo-Christian world view.”

Stone said that what the missionaries “saw” was a dangerous sport that women actively participated in, with slides named after female deities. “They needed to eliminate the worship of females,” he said, noting that erasure of hōlua from Hawaiian consciousness included dismantling many of the slides. And in more than one instance, the stones that formed the slides were reused to build churches.

Now in his 70s, Stone is concerned that outsiders will co-opt heʻe hōlua, monetize it, and profit off of Hawaiian intellectual and cultural property the way surfing – Hawaiʻi’s most famous export – was co-opted in the mid-20th century.

“The reason I’m very choosy about who maintains the knowledge is because I’ve had offers from skateboarding and snowboarding companies. But it’s not for sale,” Stone said adamantly.

Stone is not currently mentoring any hōlua makers or riders outside his own family, although he has previously served as kumu to a handful of cultural practitioners who are now perpetuating ʻike pertaining to hōlua and fabrication of papa hōlua: Kumulāʻau Sing, ʻIliahi Doo, Kunāne Wooton, and Mahi La Pierre.

In his experience, few people want to commit. “It’s a process of pain to make a papa hōlua,” said Stone. “Your hands will be bleeding and your whole body aches because you learn to lash with your fingers, toes, teeth – whatever.”

Reflecting on his twin passions for heʻe hōlua and heʻe nalu (surfing), Stone said that at their essence they are the same.

“Look at it from a cultural point of view. Pele is on one side and Nāmakaokahaʻi (sea goddess and sister to Pele) is on the other. Although the legend is about them battling their way across the islands, I see it as a harmonizing. They go hand in hand,” Stone said.

“Hōlua and surfing are one and the same. If no more waves, ride the mountains.”

ahu location this Sunday, Feb. 15. The business’s new location is on the second level of 

Aiea Shopping Center, next to Ice Garden and Koa Pancake House.

Aiea location is in the former space of a sandwich shop. Construction on the space started after the business’s sister restaurant, Marujuu Hawai

i will be open from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for lunch and from 5 to 8:30 p.m. for dinner Thursdays to Mondays (closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays). The business will be open for walk-ins only; no reservations will be accepted.

The menu at this location is the same as the ones at the business’s Kaimukī and 

Totoya’s original negitoro — which is made fresh daily with local fresh ‘ahi — is the base for the majority of its bowls. Its tokujo bowl ($38.90) — a premium option with original negitoro, salmon roe, sea urchin (Hokkaido uni) and snow crab — is the most popular order.

The eatery’s Fukuju bowl ($39.50) is the second most-popular dish. It features original negitoro with tuna and salmon, red shrimp, scallops, sea urchin, snow crab, tobiko and two pieces of nori.

The salmon bowl with salmon roe ($19.50) is a local favorite. All bowls come with your choice of miso soup — Aosa seaweed miso soup, or upgrade to shrimp head ($3.90) or crab ($4.90) miso soup — or half-size udon noodles ($4.90).

Other dishes on the menu include fresh shrimp combination bowl ($27.90); rainbow trio bowl ($25.90); matsu bowl ($26.90) with Hokkaido uni and salmon roe; and more.

Totoya Hawaiʻi, known for its negitoro bowls, is opening in ʻAiea Shopping Center on Sunday, Feb. 15. The menu here is the same as the business’s other two locations in the Ala Moana and Kaimukī neighborhoods. Customers can now add “ikura showers” when ordering specific seafood bowls.
