 celebrated the best of Hawaiian and Island music in a glittering event filled with performances and applause on Saturday, July 11, at the Sheraton Waikīkī Beach Resort.

The star-studded evening included performances from Hālau O Kekuhi, Ei Nei, 

, Poʻokela, Anthony Pfluke & Friends, Ahe Mālie and 

, Natalie Ai Kamauu, Melveen Leed, Kainani Kahaunaele & Kainaulono Hāpai, Kalapana.

Ei Nei took home six Nā Hōkū Hanohano awards, including: Group of the Year, Single of the Year, Album of the Year (Producer’s & Artist’s Award), Song of the Year (Composer’s Award), Island Music Album of the Year, and Favorite Entertainer of the Year.

“I wanted to take a moment to just thank all of you guys for voting and also to acknowledge all of the talent and the beauty in this room because I see each and every one of you from Kauaʻi to Hawaiʻi Island,” said Miner in her acceptance speech for female vocalist of the year. “I honor every single person here tonight and how connected we all are. We're each on our own journeys, walking on our own paths, and the uniqueness is our leo, our voice, and so I honor each and every voice here tonight, and I honor the 10,000 kūpuna who stand beside each and every one of us creators tonight and then the future — the future generation of all of us.”

Earlier in the night, Miner won EP of the Year. She accepted that award while holding her daughter.

Alternative Album of the Year for "KŌWĀ.” In his acceptance speech, he told the audience he had been eating chocolate cake when his name was announced. The artist also shared how his grandmother used to tape the awards and make him watch as a kid.

“I just want you guys to know that this means so, so, so, so much to me,” he said. “I really did not think I was gonna win this.”

On a June afternoon in Liliha, police found a man walking the centerline of North Kuakini Street with blood soaking his white shirt. Police asked the man his name. “I’m Jesus Israel Black I!” he told the officers, according to court documents. “I’m a pedophile. It’s a conspiracy. I’m being framed.” He was not Jesus Israel Black the First. He was Joshua, the son.

An hour later, Joshua’s mother found Jesus, 70, lying bloodied on the floor of their Nalanui Street apartment. He was taken to a hospital and died there that night. The son had taken his father’s name and his father’s imagined guilt in the same breath.

It was the third case of its kind on Oʻahu in the past year. Last June, London Opendack was charged with attacking his mother and father with a hammer in their Waikīkī apartment. Court records show he had 

 to stand trial in earlier cases, and twice released. In December, Micah Auna was charged with murder. Police had found his mother’s body at the foot of the stairs in her Hawaiʻi Kai home.

Two of the three men reached for the same story. Auna 

 his mother had molested him and his cousin, so he “pushed” her. Black wore his father’s name and confessed his father’s imagined crime in one sentence. And on Hawaiʻi Island in May, Jacob Baker was charged with killing three elderly men — one of whom had let him harvest coconuts from his land. At one scene, police found “Pedofilio” written on a piece of scrap wood.

Opendack is the exception. His social media posts, still online, show a mind fixated not on predators but on mathematical patterns — number theory as private revelation. The fixation was not new. In a 2022 petition for a restraining order, an ex-girlfriend described finding a note in her driveway that looked like a math proof. On closer inspection it was math symbols arranged into nonsense. His erratic speech, she wrote, pointed to a severe psychological disorder.

A disturbed mind grabs whatever story its culture keeps nearest at hand. A generation ago, the paranoid man heard the CIA in his fillings. Today’s troubled young man, more often than not, finds a predator in his own house.

The fear is not irrational in itself — child predation is real, and our alarm about it is warranted. That is exactly why it has become the costume worn by delusion. Court records note that Jesus Black had ten prior convictions, and none of them were for anything like what his son alleged.

Scripture treats honor of parents as more than good manners. It is the first commandment, Paul observes, that carries a promise: honor your father and mother, that your days may be long in the land. The promise is civic, not merely personal. A society in which honor flows toward age is a society where the old die in their beds. Leviticus extends the same fabric past the household: rise before the gray head, honor the face of an old man. Baker’s alleged victims were not his kin. They were men old enough to be his father, living quietly in Puna.

The Mosaic penalty for striking a parent was death. That severity measures the weight of the offense against the created order. It does not tell a judge what to do with these particular men. The same tradition that gave us Exodus spent centuries separating the gravity of an act from the capacity of the actor.

One of these men was twice found unfit for trial, and twice released. Years later, he allegedly took a hammer to his parents. That raises a policy question for the state.

But the deeper repair happens where the state cannot reach: fathers present in homes, and congregations that do not send their disturbed young men out to the sidewalk. It depends on families that treat the commandment as livable rather than quaint.

None of us will do what these men stand accused of. But the commandment was not written for monsters. It was written for ordinary homes. The commandment covers the way we approach the father who repeats himself, the teacher talked over in class, the kūpuna left to manage alone. Honor frays at the small points long before it tears at the large ones. The extreme cases shock us because some of the old fabric still holds.

We can pray that God’s will be done and that young men would come to know this commandment. We still must do the part of the work assigned to us.

The commandment comes with a promise. Long days in the land are offered to us, if we obey.

Hawai‘i will prohibit the sale of “99.9%” of all e-cigarette products in the state starting next year, per Gov. Josh Green, who signed a pair of bills into law Tuesday.

“Vaping is bad, period,” Green said. “It leads to young people getting addicted to nicotine and it affects their physiology and development. And they get hooked on cigarettes later.”

SB 2175 will prohibit the sale or distribution of any disposable e-cigarette devices beginning Jan. 1, 2027. Any violation of the law will incur a $100 fine per day per product.

While Green discussed SB 2175 Tuesday largely from a health perspective, he added that disposable vapes have increasingly been identified as an environmental problem: not only are they common litter, but the lithium batteries within them can cause fires or release toxic metals into the environment.

HB 1573 is more extensive, requiring that the only e-cigarette and vape liquid products allowed to be sold in Hawai‘i be approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Rep. Scot Matayoshi, a co-introducer of the bill, said Tuesday that limits the number of products to only 45, most of which do not have the sweet flavorings that have made vapes attractive to young people.

However, Matayoshi acknowledged that the most recent vape products approved by the FDA include two fruit-flavored vape pods. Nonetheless, he said the vast majority of fruit- or candy-flavored vape products are not FDA-approved and will be much harder and more expensive for children to access.

In any case, Green said “market forces alone” will likely strongly discourage manufacturers from attempting to gain a foothold in Hawai‘i.

“It’s very difficult for anyone to be in the industry in a market where, let’s be honest, we don’t want them here in Hawai‘i,” Green said.

As written, HB 1573 requires that, beginning Oct. 1, all vape manufacturers attempting to distribute products in the state must submit proof of their compliance with state and federal laws, proof of an FDA marketing granted order and a $1,000 payment for each product line certified with the state.

Then, beginning Jan. 1, 2027, the state Department of the Attorney General, will publish an updated directory of all brand names, products and manufacturers certified in the state. Attempting to sell any product not included on that list will incur a $500 fine for each individual product for sale for a first violation, and increasing incrementally up to $2,000 per product for a fourth violation.

Should the manufacturer itself be found to be offering non-approved products for sale in the state, the manufacturer could be fined up to $10,000 for each product, and could be found guilty of a misdemeanor.

Kalaheo High School student Maya Butts said vaping continues to plague Hawai‘i schools, saying that her school’s bathrooms no longer feel like functioning restrooms, but instead are just “places to vape.”

“I’ve watched my smart, athletic friends completely lose their motivation,” Butts said. “They got hooked on these devices that taste like candy, move on to other substances, then lose their spark altogether.”

Although vapes and e-cigarettes have been used to help wean tobacco smokers off of normal cigarettes, Green said he is skeptical that such a use case outweighs their harm.

“The biggest problem has been getting an entire generation … innumerable middle schoolers and high schoolers hooked,” Green said. “Society has found ways to quit traditional cigarettes through medical means, through behavioral techniques; we should lean on those.”

Lola Irvin, administrator of the state Department of Health’s Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion Division, said adults who have concurrently used traditional cigarettes and e-cigarettes are less likely to successfully quit smoking, while young people who begin using e-cigarettes are more likely to transition to smoking traditional cigarettes.

Furthermore, Irvin said that e-cigarette use has been linked to increased risk of lung and oral cancers, and concluded “it is not a safe product to use for quitting.”

Guests can pre-order their in-flight meals through the Alaska Hawaiian mobile app or website two weeks in advance and up to 20 hours prior to departure.

The new main cabin menu was developed by Maui-based Sheldon Simeon, the chef/owner behind Tiffany’s Restaurant & Bar and Tin Roof Maui.

. “We were looking for a few things: a local chef that has represented Hawaiʻi well around the world in their career; someone who really aligned with our principles of featuring local products and supporting local businesses; and someone who would something warm, inviting and comforting on the aircraft. Chef Sheldon knows what it takes to make an amazing recipe and amazing dishes, and to bring those to life on an airplane.”

At Monday’s media event at Tiffany’s Restaurant & Bar on Maui, Aloha State Daily got a preview of the new Hawaiʻi-inspired menu. The menu features elevated takes on local favorites and comfort foods.

Prices for each meal range from about $11 to $17. For breakfast (flights departing between 6 and 9:59 a.m.), guests can choose from corned beef hash and eggs ($15.99), Island-style French toast breakfast ($15.99), banana pancake breakfast ($15.99), and coconut overnight oats ($10.99).

The corned beef hash and eggs entree features crisped corned beef hash served over roasted breakfast potatoes, topped with a poached egg and Hollandaise sauce.

“We’ve done a ton of tests, and we actually got the perfect poached egg in there,” Simeon says. “The Hollandaise sauce is right over the top, and we got some peppers and some onions in there.”

The banana pancake breakfast comprises three pancakes filled with mashed bananas, served with Portuguese sausage and scrambled eggs. Guests will also get Simeon’s specialty banana bread syrup.

“We took home-baked banana bread and we turned it into a syrup, so you get that fresh-baked flavor when you drizzle it over the top,” Simeon explains. “I think that banana bread is one of the best-smelling things in the world.”

He adds that the French toast and banana pancakes are reminiscent of Sunday morning breakfasts.

“I use the line that ‘Somebody is already thinking of you before you wake up,’” Simeon says. “When you get to have breakfast, I wanted something that’s going to feel like that.”  

For lunch and dinner (flights departing between 10 a.m. and 8:29 p.m.), choose from crispy mochiko chicken and garlic noodles, teriyaki cheeseburger, barbecue teriyaki chicken bento, grilled chicken banh mi sandwich, cheeseburger mac and cheese, sweet and tangy tender greens, and an Italian sub.

“Kamaʻāina that are flying are going to see familiar choices,” Onishi says. “Now, more than ever throughout our cabin, we have more local ingredients sourced in Hawaiʻi — not just in our Island airports, but also in kitchens across the continent. We’re excited to feature as many local flavors from local vendors as much as possible.”

The crispy mochiko chicken with garlic noodles features a crispy, rice flour-coated chicken thigh served with garlicky noodles. It’s accompanied by Simeon’s mac salad, signature spicy-K mayo, sweet teriyaki sauce and his crispy toppings bag.

“‘Fried chicken in the plane — do you have fryers in the back of the plane?’” Simeon jokes. “No, we don’t, but we wanted to mimic that flavor and texture. When people think of mochiko chicken — and fried chicken, in general — they want it crunchy. To mimic that, we have this ‘magic in a bag.’ Dip your chicken in the sauce — the sweet soy or K-mayo — and sprinkle over that kakimochi and furikake to get that crispy, crunchy flavor.”  

The grilled chicken banh mi sandwich features French bread with lemongrass-grilled chicken, fresh cilantro, jalapenos and pickled vegetables. Most entrees come with Simeon’s mac salad.

“This is a legit banh mi sandwich,” Simeon says. “It’s a hearty sandwich; it’s going to be served warm. For the mac salad, we do it local-style, full-flavored with potatoes and extra mayonnaise.”

He says the cheeseburger mac deluxe — a twist on mac and cheese — is one of his favorite dishes on the menu.

“I grew up eating Hamburger Helper,” Simeon says. “There’s just something homey about that; it feels like a hug in a bowl.”

The teriyaki cheeseburger ($15.99) features a teriyaki-marinated beef patty topped with American cheese and housemade pickles in a toasted teriyaki-glazed bun.

“When I think of Hawaiʻi, I think of teri cheeseburgers,” Simeon says. “We make our own patties.”

Guests who want something lighter — but still filling — can opt for the sweet and tender greens ($14.49). The tangy salad is a blend of baby kale, toasted almonds, edamame, grape tomato, quinoa, li hing mango, and a salty-sweet li hing balsamic vinaigrette.

“Our sweet-and-sour salad is another fun one; it’s got a little bit of crunch and a little bit of that burst of flavor from the li hing mui with balsamic vinaigrette,” Simeon says.

He emphasizes that this is the first iteration of the menu, and guests can look forward to more exciting developments to come.

“As you can see by the menu items, it’s not the most avant garde, I’m not trying to make the most fancy (dishes),” Simeon says. “I wanted to connect the stories of what makes us ‘live Hawaiʻi.’ These stories are engrained in these recipes that might look, on the surface, very simple, but it’s deeply rooted. Hopefully, we get to tell those stories to thousands of people in the air. Mahalo to Hawaiian Airlines for letting us have that opportunity."

"After many years with the program, Darren Matsuda will no longer serve as our varsity head basketball coach," an email sent to Punahou basketball families and obtained by Aloha State Daily read in part. "We appreciate his years of service to Punahou and the time he has given to the boys basketball program as head coach, and we extend our best wishes to him."

Matsuda was first named the head coach for the Buffanblu in 2010. He led the Buffanblu to state titles in 2012, 2018 and 

Matsuda also coached Punahou to five state runner-up finishes, most recently in February, back when the Buffanblu lost to Kahuku 40-38 on a Inoke Lloyd layup with three seconds remaining. 

In addition to his success at the state tournament level, Matsuda also guided the Buffanblu to four ILH titles, including in 2026. 

Since the introduction of the state tournament in 1957, Punahou has won 12 HHSAA titles in boys basketball.

A new bento and musubi shop recently opened in Downtown Honolulu.

, whose original location is in Kalihi, just opened another store in Downtown Honolulu. The store is located at 700 Bishop Street; it’s located next to Komala Curry (in the same building at Bar Leather Apron).

The business is known for its reasonably priced bentos. Popular options include grilled salmon ($8.90), nori bento ($6.99), and butterfish ($11.99).

The Downtown Honolulu store also has several exclusive bento options, like mochiko chicken ($10.50), chicken katsu ($10.50) and hamburg steak ($12). Chicken katsu curry ($12.99) is also a Downtown Honolulu exclusive.

Customers can also enjoy a variety of musubi, which is another Downtown Honolulu exclusive. Musubi options range from salmon ($2.99), spicy tuna ($3.19) and tuna mayo ($2.99) to mentaiko ($3.29), unagi ($4.79), kakuni ($4.39) and Spam egg ($3.39).
