, recently published her debut picture book with 

The story follows a Japanese American girl, around the age of 6 or 7, who is too shy to dance at the Obon festival until her she finds courage with the help of her grandfather, she said. Her inspiration

 was drawn from personal experiences with her grandpa at the Soto Zen Bon Festival in Hanapēpē

“He loved the Bon dance and used to take me there,” Uyemura told Aloha State Daily. “I had these visceral memories of him getting ready, padding down his balding head with hair oil and putting his happi coat on all excited. ... He’d give us money to play games there. ...With the lanterns overhead and the sound of the Taiko drums, which left such an impression on me. 

I knew that was what I wanted to write about.”

“Now, I’m dancing with my grandpa in a different way,” she said with a smile.

Obon season runs from June through September, and in Hawaiʻi, local communities join in celebration of the Japanese Buddhist festival with traditional music, dance and food, to honor ancestors.

As part of her writing process, Uyemura enjoyed researching the meaning behind Obon festival, “

which was what it was missing,” she said.

It originates from the Festival of Souls, which brings spirits back. The dance movements mimic Japanese workers in coal mines, or in Hawai

i, sugar cane workers. My family was raised on the sugar plantations. … When I dance, I feel like my ancestors are with me. But some people go to bon dances because they just like to dance, not everyone is there for spiritual or cultural reasons.”

“I love to write. I majored in English, studied literature, and as a little kid I always wanted to become a writer.”

The kidlit author said there was a lot of “un-training” involved in bringing this fiction manuscript to life, which she started working on between 2014 and 2015. More than 10 years later, 

illustrated by Amy Matsushita-Beal, can be 

 at several major retailers and independent bookstores, including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, the Buddhist Churches of America bookstore, among others.

“I’m good at waiting for things I really want,” 

 said, adding that she waited many years for a dog growing up. “I got over 100 rejections (for the book) and so many times I wanted to give up but would still have a little bit of hope.”

In 2020, she won a mentorship with acclaimed children’s author 

 and said, “that’s when things started to move quickly.”

“It pushed me more. She helped get my manuscript in shape and I feel really fortunate,” 

 told ASD. “I wrote it as a newspaper writer, accurately, well-researched and how I remembered it. It was written in the third person at first before we changed it to first person.”

What also helped as a debut author was feedback and support from friends, though, she was surprised “some cried when they read my book.”

“I didn’t know people were going to have an emotional reaction to it,” 

Friends have gone out of their way to help support me, and I need community. Even emailing updates back and forth with other authors has been keeping me going right now. I’m grateful for the people who show up for me.”

Uyemura continues to freelance, while working to promote the book and 

find agents for 20 more manuscripts. With a background in Counseling Psychology, she previously worked at Psych Central for 9 years and as a coach.

With support from her husband, the pair are raising two boys ages 10 and 12 to read and tell good stories, she said, adding “I have two manuscripts that I wrote about them, and I read them my manuscripts, too.”

Her advice for other local writers? “Kidlit authors work so hard; you just have to let things go and let things happen. My book was supposed to come out last summer; there was so much pressure and the dates kept changing.

“For debut authors, appreciate the moment and don

worry about how sales are going to do. You can’t control everything. Remember the interactions you have with readers and learn from them.”

In late March, the Kailua-based writer launched children’s book, “I am a Bon Dancer,” inspired by her own experiences with her grandfather attending Obon festivals in Hanapēpē. The author is hosting a couple of events open to the public at Kaimukī Library on May 31 and June 2, with more to be announced.

 the City and County of Honolulu after she was fined nearly $600,000 over an improper apartment listing.

In 2019, Sandra May needed a tenant. She had owned a home on Wilhelmina Rise since the 1970s, with a lower unit in the home available for rent by long-term tenants. But after her husband died in 2019, May, living on a fixed Social Security income, needed to make ends meet, but couldn’t find another tenant.

To broaden her search, May listed the unit on several online rental platforms. But May — who her attorney Loren Seehase said “struggles to utilize any kind of technology” — had inadvertently listed the unit as available for less than 30 days.

That same year, the City and County adopted an 

 hiking up fines against property owners illegally hosting short-term rentals. Violators could be fined up to $10,000 for each day a violation persists.

In November 2019, May received a notice of a violation from the city regarding an online property listing. She promptly corrected the listing to show that the unit was only available for periods of 30 days or more, and believed the matter to be done.

Two years later, after the lifting of the Covid-era moratorium on evicting tenants for non-payment of rent, May again was in need of new tenants. Once again she listed the unit online, once again (in 2023) she received a notice of violation from the city, once again she corrected the listing, once again she thought the matter over.

In April 2024, it happened again. Only this time, because this was a recurring violation, the city informed May that she would incur daily $10,000 fines until the listings were corrected.

Unfortunately, May spent much of late March and April in and out of the hospital following a car crash and other medical procedures. By the time she learned of the violation and was able to correct it, 59 days had elapsed — and now she owed the city $590,000.

On the same day, the city also placed a $10,000 lien on May’s property stemming from the second violation.

“She’s like, ‘you know you’re going to put an old lady out on the street,’” Seehase told Aloha State Daily. “‘I can’t pay this, you’d have to take my home.’ And the city responded by saying ‘Well, I guess you’d better get an attorney.’ So, it was a very callous response. Poor Sandra was in tears about it, and there was no conversation, there was no negotiating, there was no listening to reason.”

May sought out attorneys, who referred her to the Pacific Legal Foundation, a public interest law firm that focuses on property rights cases. Even better for May, the PLF works pro bono, Seehase said.

Seehase said the letter informing May of how much she owed the city did not mention any way to challenge the fines. Without a mechanism within ordinances to challenge the situation, Seehase said the only option is to challenge it on constitutional grounds, in federal court.

In particular, Seehase said the case could be argued to be in violation of the Eighth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. That amendment most famously concerns “cruel and unusual punishment,” but also protects against excessive fines.

Seehase said other Eighth Amendment cases have attempted to determine whether particular fines are so ruinous they will destroy a person’s livelihood, weighed in proportion to the actual crime itself.

In this particular case, Seehase said, May’s mistake brought no harm to anybody other than herself.

“This is not the type of situation where we’ve got like a building code violation and lives are imminently in danger,” Seehase said. “This is an advertisement, so there was no harm done to anyone.”

On the other side of the coin, Seehase said the $10,000-per-day fines are the absolute maximum allowed by city ordinance, and that the city could have chosen to reduce those fines at their discretion. Because the city hit May with the $590,000 fines and the $10,000 lien on the same day, Seehase said that “it really kind of appeared that the city went on a vendetta … against poor Sandra.”

Seehase emphasized that, regardless of how the listings may have appeared online, May did not ever offer the property for periods of less than 30 days. If a person attempted to book the property for less than 30 days, May would cancel the booking.

May is seeking relief through the federal court, not monetary damages, Seehase said. Should they win, the court will determine an appropriate remedy, potentially including a partial or total reduction of the fines.

Seehase said the City and County has 21 days to respond once they have been served.

A spokesman for the Department of Planning and Permitting told ASD the department cannot comment on pending litigation.

 recently opened its second location. The business’s original location is close to Hilton Hawaiian Village; Goofy Café & Dine – Waikīkī Beach is on the first floor of The Twin Fin Hotel on Kalākaua Avenue. Its grand opening is Friday, May 29.

While the original Goofy’s Café offers dinner, it focuses on brunch. The new restaurant, which is in the former spot of Wolfgang Puck Express, features an all-day dining experience with menus for breakfast, lunch, happy hour and dinner.

The breakfast menu is offered from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., according to general manager Michael Tabarejo. The menu features customer favorites like smoked salmon eggs Benedict ($24.50), lemon butter garlic shrimp omelet ($21), avocado toast ($18), and the Big Island beef loco moco ($24). However, the Waikīkī Beach café offers buttermilk pancakes with a variety of toppings.

“Pancakes are only at this location,” general manager Michael Tabarejo confirms. “They (the other location) do French toasts. For our eggs Benedicts, we use sourdough bread instead of English muffins.”

The fluffy buttermilk pancakes come with toppings like fresh berries ($20), Hawaiian tropical fruits ($20), brown sugar mascarpone cream ($18) and bacon mac and cheese ($20). The latter features a sweet-and-savory combo, thanks to the melted cheese topping with maple syrup on the side.

The brown sugar mascarpone cream features a velvety mascarpone whipped with brown butter and rich brown sugar.

The eatery’s popular acai bowls are still available at this location. Choose from the fresh berries bowl ($18), Hawaiian tropical fruit bowl ($18) or niu acai bowl ($19). Tabarejo recommends the latter, which includes papaya, strawberries, banana, coconut mousse, chia seeds and coconut flakes.

The eatery’s lunch menu is served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Options range from local corn fried rice ($20) and the Goofy cheeseburger ($21) to fish and chips ($23 lunch, $20 happy hour).

“For lunch, the corn fried rice is amazing,” Tabarejo says. “It’s got some protein (pork belly), vegetables and rice. Our fish and chips are also good; they’re light and crispy. We use Swai (for the fish).”

The fish and chips are served with fries and tartar sauce. The Goofy cheeseburger features a brioche bun filled with a double 4-ounce beef patty, Swiss cheese, American cheese, caramelized onions and house sauce, with fries on the side.

The eatery’s happy hour, available daily from 2 to 5 p.m., is exclusive to this location (the eatery’s Village location doesn’t have a happy hour). Customers can enjoy pūpū-style dishes — like ‘ulu hummus and tortilla chips ($12), truffle fries ($12), spicy ‘ahi nachos ($18) and the Goofy spread board ($15) — along with larger plates like the spicy crispy chicken sandwich ($20) and clubhouse sandwich ($20).

The Island-grown breadfruit hummus comes with local tortilla chips. The Goofy spread board ($15) is anticipated to be a signature option. Pick any three house spreads — fresh guacamole, kalua pork rillettes, ricotta honey pepper whip or truffle local mushroom pate — served with toasted sourdough.

The restaurant’s dinner menu, served from 5 to closing, features heartier options like steak and fries ($48), creamy Tuscan salmon ($35), chicken Parmigiano ($26), confit Branzino ($69) and surf and turf ($120). The latter is designed to serve two people, and includes a 1-pound rib-eye steak, lobster tail and Kauai shrimp. The confit Branzino is a Mediterranean sea bass that features a whole fish served with pistachio caper salsa and roasted potatoes.

Customers can also enjoy a variety of beverages, ranging from beers and wines by the glass or bottle to house cocktails and “Goofy Flow” drinks. The latter are frozen cocktails and come in flavors like liliko

i, peach and starburst ($18 each), which features a mango strawberry syrup. "Goofy Flow" drinks are usually made with rum, but non-alcoholic versions are also available. 

Goofy Café & Dine – Waikīkī Beach also features a takeout window with a separate grab-and-go menu. The takeout window is open from noon to 5 p.m. and features options like furikake fries ($6), volcano loaded fries ($9), volcano chili cheese hot dogs ($13) and more.

The Hawaiʻi Food and Wine Festival is set to return this fall with this theme: traditions and heritage. Last week, the festival announced 11 events, including ones on Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi Island and Maui, as part of a launch event held at the Prince Waikīkī.

This year, the festival’s theme reflects on the cultural roots of Hawaiʻi’s culinary and agricultural communities and celebrates local farmers, ranchers, fishers and chefs.

Denise Yamaguchi, the chief executive officer of Hawai‘i Food and Wine Festival and the Hawai‘i Ag & Culinary Alliance, is looking forward to the evolution of the Feast Summit. 

The conversations that began during our inaugural Feast Summit last year were so impactful that they led to the creation of Feast: Dish & Dialogue, our podcast series that extended those discussions far beyond the conference itself," she told ASD via email after the May 22 launch event. "Through conversations with chefs, educators, farmers, hospitality leaders and innovators, the podcast reinforced something we deeply believe — that food and culinary belong at the center of the plate when we talk about Hawai‘i’s future."

Proceeds from tickets support culinary education and workforce development, as well as local agriculture and sustainability initiatives. To date, the festival has raised more than $5.2 million for these causes.

Now in its 16th year, the festival originally started with a three-day culinary event co-founded by James Beard Award-winning chefs 

“When Roy and I first started the festival, we wanted to create opportunities for the next generation coming up behind us,” Wong told attendees at the launch event. “One of the most meaningful things we've seen is the impact of the festival on culinary students here in Hawaiʻi. This past year, students had the opportunity to work side-by-side with world-renowned chefs, asking questions, observing technique, helping execute events, and building relationships that can shape the course of their careers. I wish I had that opportunity when I was going to school. What makes the festival special is that students aren't just watching from the sidelines, they're interacting directly with mentors and industry leaders from around the world.”

The festival is a program of the Hawaiʻi Ag & Culinary Alliance, a nonprofit that spotlights Hawaiʻi as a world-class culinary destination and supports the farmers, chefs and students who call Hawaiʻi home.

, which is known for its signature pork katsu, recently launched a new kushikatsu menu. It’s available during the eatery’s late-night happy hour, which is nightly from 8:30 p.m. to midnight.

You can choose from vegetable, meat or seafood kushikatsu. They cost $2.80 to $6 each, depending on what you order.

Options include asparagus, shiitake mushroom, lotus root, pork tenderloin, chicken, beef tenderloin, Kurobuta pork loin, oyster, shrimp and more. So far, the Kurobuta pork loin ($4.80) and beef tenderloin ($5) have been customer favorites.

We personally loved the shrimp katsu ($5) and shiitake mushroom katsu ($2.80).

You can also get an assorted kushi katsu set ($15).

The late-night menu also includes popular appetizers like ponzu steak with grated daikon, garlic shrimp, mochiko fried chicken, spicy cucumber and tofu, seared beef tataki and tofu poke.

The mini katsu don and mini katsu curry ($10) are also good deals. The mini katsu curry is a customer favorite.

Customers can also take advantage of $3 drink specials — $3 beers, sake, sho-chu, wines by the glass and sparkling wine.

Validated customer parking is available in the Bank of Hawaiʻi Waikīkī Center lot.

New Zealand actor Temuera Morrison has worked alongside 

, first as his father in “Aquaman” movies and later as King Kahekili, his rival, in the Apple TV+ mini-series “Chief of War.”

 Now, the actors are starring together in “The Wrecking Crew,” where Morrison plays the governor of Hawai’i.

The fast-paced action comedy features estranged brothers Jonny (Momoa) and James (Dave Bautista), who reunite in Hawai’i to find out who murdered their father. The movie launched on Amazon Prime Video on Jan. 27. 

“Hey, if there's any chance to work in Hawai’i, that's the best place to work in the world,” Morrison told ASD. “Stay on Waikīkī. Go and do some filming. Come back to Waikīkī. Have a little swim. Go eat. Go to the mall — Royal Hawaiian [Center] — and watch a little hula. Go try some malasada donuts. Oh, my God.”

“The Wrecking Crew” included 12 days of filming in Hawaiʻi and 43 days in New Zealand, Angela Laprete, the Hawaiʻi producer for the movie told ASD. Laprete is a founder of the 

Hawai’i Film Alliance, which formed in July

 and is advocating for tax incentives that could bring more movies and television shows to Hawai’i.

Morrison first captured Momoa’s attention when he played Jake Heke, the violent and alcoholic father at the heart of “Once Were Warriors” (1994), 

one of the most successful movies in New Zealand film history

“I think he'd seen my movie ‘Once Were Warriors,’ which I was a big part of and it moved him in a way that actually put him into acting,” Morrison said. “So, when ‘Aquaman’ came along, I think he was a big mover in getting me to play his dad. He's just been a big fan of mine. He's like my son, really.”

Over the years, Morrison played Boba Fett in the “Star Wars” movies and the voice of Chief Tui in “Moana,” among other roles. Recently, Morrison and Momoa appeared in “Chief of War,” which was filmed mostly in ‘Olelo Hawai’i. “The Wrecking Crew” focuses on the Hawaiian side of where Momoa grew up, he added.

“He's worked hard,” Morrison said. “He's put himself in a nice, viable place now, where we can make these kind of movies.”

Morrison said with a laugh that he doesn’t look like the state’s current governor, Josh Green.

“Sometimes I ask myself, ‘What the hell am I doing in this film?’” he said. “But anyway, my buddy is asking, so I better just turn up and be the governor.’”

Morrison remembers the first time he met Bautista.

“I met Dave Bautista some time ago, too, when he first started out,” he said. “It was really nice to reconnect with Dave. In fact, when I saw Dave on set for the first time, he goes, ‘Do you remember me?’ I said, ʻOf course, I remember you!’”

“The Wrecking Crew,” a movie starring Jason Momoa, Dave Bautista and Temuera Morrison is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Temuera told Aloha State Daily about the acting advice he gave Bautista, when they first worked together years ago, which resulted in a gift of Louis Vuitton sunglasses on set.
