On January 31, 1835, William Charles Lunalilo was born to High Chiefess Miriam Auhea Kekauluohi and High Chief Charles Kana‘ina. As a grandnephew of King Kamehameha I and a cousin to Kamehameha IV, Kamehameha V, and Kamāmalu, Lunalilo was deeply rooted in royal heritage. He received an education at the Royal School, where he mastered both English and Hawaiian, and was considered a scholar and poet. He was an intelligent man who won the hearts of those around him through courtesy, generosity, and genuine friendliness. But beyond his grace, Lunalilo held a deep respect for family and loyalty.

Since the 1820s, the remains of Hawai‘i’s past monarchs were housed in a Western-style structure on the grounds of ‘Iolani Palace called Pohukaina. Beginning with Kamehameha II and Queen Kamāmalu, Pohukaina became the final resting place for Hawai‘i’s kings, queens, and high-ranking ali‘i. However, after 40 years, the tomb began to fill up.

In 1865, most of the remains of Hawaii’s ali‘i were moved from the burial vault at Pohukaina to the newly completed Royal Mausoleum at Mauna‘ala in Nu‘uanu Valley. Lunalilo took offense that his mother, Kekauluohi, was left behind. In his resentment towards the reigning King Kamehameha V, Lunalilo removed his mother’s remains and deposited them in a secret spot out at sea. Many believe that the treatment of his mother’s remains influenced Lunalilo’s wish to be buried at Kawaiaha‘o rather than Mauna‘ala.

Following the death of Kamehameha V in December 1872, Lunalilo was elected King and took the throne in January 1873. At just 39 years old, Lunalilo’s life was cut short by tuberculosis, and his reign ended on February 3, 1874. He held the title of King for just one year and 25 days. On his deathbed, Lunalilo expressed a wish to be buried among his people rather than among the kings and chiefs.

His initial funeral was marked by a 21-gun salute, and his body was initially laid in state at Mauna‘ala while his gravesite at Kawaiaha‘o Church was under construction. On November 23, 1875, after the completion of Lunalilo’s tomb, his remains were transferred to Kawaiaha‘o for a second funeral. It had been nearly two years since Lunalilo’s death, and King Kalākaua, the new monarch, declined to authorize another 21-gun salute.

But what the king refused, the heavens fulfilled. Reports say that from the time Lunalilo’s body left Mauna‘ala until he was interred at Kawaiaha‘o Church, a dramatic storm passed over Honolulu with exactly 21 thunderclaps occurring during the procession.

A newspaper article noted that on the same day, several large water spouts appeared in the channel between O‘ahu and Kaua‘i. In Hawaiian tradition, such phenomena were considered signs of ‘aumākua, ancestral spirits, escorting their descendants to the afterlife.

For a brief time in the early 2000s, I worked at the school on the grounds of the Kawaiaha‘o Church. During this time, the gates surrounding Lunalilo’s tomb would be left open during the day for visitors, and the groundskeeper would close them at 6:00 p.m. each evening.

One evening, the school was celebrating the Chinese New Year tradition. The staff was asked to find parking on the surrounding streets, to allow the families to park on campus. After the festivities, which included a lion dance, firecrackers, and lots of delicious Chinese food, the staff stayed back to clean up and put the classrooms back in order. 

It was after 8 p.m. when I finally walked through the graveyard, headed toward the front gate. I left my car in a metered stall just outside the church grounds on Punchbowl Street. As I walked along the driveway, I noticed that the gates in front of Lunalilo’s tomb were open, and a man was sitting on the steps of the tomb itself. He was a thin, Hawaiian man, and although he was sitting, I could tell he was fairly tall. He wore a black suit and held a cigar to his lips, the tip burning red as he inhaled before letting out a puff of smoke.

I smiled and nodded my head towards the man, waving my hand in acknowledgement of his presence. In return, he raised his cigar slightly and nodded back. I thought how bold this person must be to sit at the steps of the King’s tomb so casually, and I wondered why the gates were open so late. I walked out of the church grounds, but before I got to my car, I turned around, intending to strike up a conversation and find out who the man was. I know it was less than a minute, but the man was already gone. I quickly glanced around the area, but didn’t see anyone. I decided that any questions would have to wait.

The following day, when I saw the groundskeeper on his riding lawn mower in the graveyard, I walked over to let him know what happened.

“I don’t know if it was a homeless person or a church member,” I began, “But this Hawaiian man in a black suit was sitting on the steps to the tomb, smoking a cigar. He disappeared pretty quickly. I didn’t even see where he went.”

The groundskeeper turned his lawnmower off and leaned toward me, “Try say that again?”

After I repeated myself, the man smiled and whispered, “That was probably the King’s spirit you saw. I seen him too. I don’t know why, but for some reason, he doesn’t like it when the gates are closed when he’s having a smoke. Usually, the police or somebody passing by will see the gate open, and then they give me a call.”

We often talk about mana, the spiritual energy that is present in people, nature, and even inanimate objects. I believe that Lunalilo’s mana has impressed itself upon this space and everything in it.

In 2010, for King Lunalilo’s 175th birthday, the kāhili or feather standards that stood over the King’s crypt were replaced. The trustees of Lunalilo Home asked master feather artist Aunty Paulette Kahalepuna to take on the task of creating the kāhili.

Fashioned from feathers attached to long poles and sometimes adorned with ivory, bone, or wood, kāhili were used to symbolize the presence, lineage, and status of ali‘i. I was honored to be part of the small army of novitiates and expert feather workers who helped create the replacements for the King. When the final knot was tied and the work deemed complete, Aunty Paulette instructed everyone to bring the kāhili outside to the courtyard of the QLCC facility, where we were working.

As the kāhili were being raised, the wind suddenly died. The air was still, the birds were quiet. All we could hear was the drone of traffic passing by. Then, the golden feathers on all three kāhili started to flutter. Some of us looked around and noticed that the leaves on the surrounding trees were motionless while the feathers continued to dance. The sight brought chicken skin. My knees buckled and I knelt before the kāhili as tears poured down my cheeks. It almost felt as if the kāhili themselves were the manifestation of his royal highness.

In that moment, I fully understood what kapu meant, even though, to this day, I don’t have the words to describe it. It’s more than ‘taboo,’ more than ‘sacred.’ Much more.

Perhaps meaning can be found in the name, Lunalilo, ‘so high up as to be lost to sight.’

The recent devastation wrought on our state with relentless storms and subsequent flooding was troubling to say the least. 

For those of us who emerged relatively unscathed we need to do two things.

One is to praise your respective Higher Power who, in my case, is our Lord Jesus Christ.

Two is to do anything you possibly can to support and assist those who were so negatively affected.

I will leave the former in your personal and capable hands, as faith and prayer is a potent combination.

This is not a doctoral thesis analyzing the thoughts, motives, and actions of others. I am not citing leather bound studies that profess to accomplishing the aforementioned based on exhaustive studies, focus groups and educated guessing. I'll just cut to the chase.

In this land of aloha where we espouse love, affection, thoughtfulness and caring for our fellow kama‘āina there are a number of people who suck.

And this is the perfect time for these immoral and shameless predators to stalk their victims and pounce.

Examples of what I mean: The Aloha State Daily newsroom has recently received alerts from the Building Industry Association of Hawai‘i to beware of fraudulent contractors taking advantage of homeowners in distress; from Hawaiian Electric about a scammer claiming to be from the utility threatening businesses that their power would be shut off if they didn't call a certain phone number to make a payment — be aware that 808-800-9551 is not a real Hawaiian Electric phone number, if you get this scam. There was even an alert from a small local church that someone was going around impersonating their pastor with a bogus fundraising email.

In times of crisis, there is an omnipresent call to help. And we do. But sometimes to a fault.

There were concerns expressed by many wondering if their donations reached the intended beneficiaries after the recent Maui wildfires. If you are petitioned to send money to any organization, it is right and just to vet such groups as much as possible. There are two primary sources I turn to, and those are 

. I understand the focus is primarily on national non-profit and service organizations but it will give you pertinent information to use in your vetting process.

 when contemplating cash and in-kind donations:

Step 1: Cut Out The Middleman & Give Directly

When prompted to give in response to a social media post, direct mail letter, telemarketing call, or other fundraiser, you are asked to focus on the cause or end recipient of your contribution as opposed to the person or company asking you for the donation. Just because the charity is legitimate doesn’t mean the person asking for the donation is. Instead of clicking on a donation link posted by a third-party, open a new browser and navigate directly to the donation page on the charity’s official website. Eliminating the unnecessary middleman will likely mean:

Fewer fees will eat into your donation before it gets to the charity

Your donation will be received by the charity immediately rather than held by a third-party for transfer to the charity at a later date

Scammers are unable to pocket your donation for themselves

You are exposing your personal information to fewer people, putting yourself at less risk for identity fraud or for having your data circulated to companies that may use it to bombard you with ads and additional donation requests

Step 2: Crowdfunding - Careful around crowds.

Donating through a crowdfunding website is not much different than handing cash over to a stranger on the street. Unlike registered charities which are subject to formation filings and reporting requirements like articles of incorporation, bylaws, tax exemption applications, annual IRS tax reporting, and state solicitation filings, crowdfunding campaigns are most often conducted by individuals for whom no public financial reporting is required. There are countless examples of scammers taking advantage of crowdfunding platforms to siphon donations away from people and causes with legitimate needs and redirect this cash to themselves.

When you encounter a crowdfunding campaign that promises to pass funds on to a charity, skip the middleman and donate directly to the nonprofit on its official website.

If a campaign claims to benefit victims of a tragedy or disaster, find financially efficient 

 with a track record of performing good work in similar crises and donate to these instead. Doing so will better ensure that funds get to legitimate victims in a timely manner and are distributed equitably.

If you are moved by the plight of an individual or familyasking for funds to help with medical bills or other personal expenses, donateat your own risk. You could be helping a family in dire need or lining thepockets of a fraudster. There is rarely a way to know for certain. If you do decide to take a leap of faith and make a donation to an individual, make sure you are on the official campaign page of that individual or family and not a copycat page created by a scammer in the wake of a tragedy to confuse donors and siphon funds away for themselves.

Nonprofits may use evocative imagery and heartbreaking stories to create a sense of urgency about an issue, engendering empathy and inspiring you to donate immediately, generously, and repeatedly. While it’s OK for you to allow your emotions to catalyze your giving, when it comes time to make a donation it’s important to think with your head and not with your heart. A charity’s ability to post sad photos, tell sad stories, or provide a handful of anecdotal examples of people it has helped does nothing to inform you about how efficiently it is operating on the whole or if it is even a legitimate charity at all.

One of the best ways to keep emotions in check when making giving decisions is by being proactive rather than reactive. Instead of making a contribution on the spot in reaction to an emotional appeal for donations, think ahead. Consider how much you can afford to donate to charity each year, reflect on which causes are important to you, then seek out efficient and responsible charities working in those causes that conduct the specific types of programs you want to support and have a track record of impactful work.

Step 4: Scrutinize The Claims Charities Make About Themselves

A bad charity is rarely going to tell on itself. In fact, the people running it will go to great lengths to obscure its financial reporting, using accounting tricks or outright lies to make it appear to be operating more efficiently than it actually is. For-profit professional fundraisers soliciting on a charity’s behalf may have a contract with the charity that allows it to skim as much as 90-95% of your donation off the top before passing what little remains on to the charity. Such fundraisers are notorious for crafting highly misleading donation appeals designed to play on your emotions and convince you that most of your donation will be used for a charitable purpose when this is far from the case.

Also understand that sham charities and financially inefficient nonprofits sometimes use ratings published by third-party websites to lend credibility to their organizations and gain your trust. A charity having a high rating or impact profile posted in an online ratings database does not necessarily mean a qualified financial analyst (or any human) has scrutinized that reporting in any meaningful way.  

Step 5: Donate to Top-Rated Charities or Conduct Your Own Research

Nonprofits on the good list generally spend 75% or more of their budgets on programs, spend $25 or less to raise $100 in public support, do not hold excessive assets in reserve, have met CharityWatch’s governance benchmarks, and receive “open-book” status for disclosure of basic financial information and documents to CharityWatch.

 has a primary focus on national organizations however there are localized chapters where you can find online or request annual financial reports on the work and presence they have here in Hawai‘i.

During the Maui recovery there were a myriad of groups stating they were this or they were that. I am sure there were well intended and authentic individuals or organizations accurately making those claims.

I found HCF with their financial accounting and disclosure to be timely and transparent. There were regular updates to a growing balance sheet documenting the source and amount of donations and to whom the disbursements were made. This is a standard that all genuine non-profit organizations should embrace to heighten credibility and confidence among those who support and donate.  

Finally, I understand there are more good people than bad. More generous than opportunistic.

But those heathens are out there and they must know that our generosity should not be confused with ignorance.

Asking questions and getting satisfactory answers will ensure you are truly helping those is need rather than lining the pockets of villains lurking amongst us.

One week after the Wahiawā Dam came feet away from failing, the state will take over ownership of the dam.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources has long sought to acquire the century-old dam, and the greater Wahiawā Irrigation System of which is a component, from its current owner, the Dole Food Company, in order to mitigate various safety issues that Dole was unable or unwilling to correct.

Two weeks ago, the Board of Land and Natural Resources was scheduled to officially take over management of the dam and associated land parcels, but the board meeting was postponed due to the first Kona low storm of the month. On Friday, after the second Kona low 

, the Board will finally decide whether to approve the transaction.

Should the Board approve the acquisition, the roughly 126 acres of land will fall under the care of the DLNR’s Division of State Parks, while repairs to the dam and spillway will be carried out by the state Department of Agriculture and Biosecurity, Andrew Laurence, DLNR’s Communications Director, told Aloha State Daily.

Once improvements to the dam are complete, the land will be transferred again, this time to the state Agribusiness Development Corporation, a division of the state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism.

Dole initially proposed donating the dam to the DLNR in 2021, after the DLNR fined Dole $20,000 for failing to address the dam’s undersized spillway, which doesn’t meet modern federal design standards.

, written prior to the storms this month, noted that “the dam is anticipated to overtop during storm events” and that “the aging concrete spillway structure integrity is uncertain and may potentially be compromised during a significant flow event.”

Following Dole’s 2021 proposal, the state Legislature passed 

 allocating $26 million to DLNR to acquire the dam and spillway and bring them up to safety standards. That bill set a deadline: the transaction must be completed by the end of June or else the funds will lapse.

Following the 2023 bill, Laurence said the DLNR has been conducting various assessments of the parcels involved in the transactions. Amid those assessments, teams found several environmental violations, including improperly stored petroleum products leaking onto the soil, floor drains from a neighboring autobody shop emptying onto the land, and more.

These violations are cited in the BLNR report as additional justification for the DLNR to take over the land.

Several farmers and agricultural groups have submitted testimony supporting the state takeover of the dam, although that testimony was written before last weekend’s flooding.

The Hawai‘i Farm Bureau wrote that the Wahiawā Irrigation System cannot be replaced by individual farmers in Central and North O‘ahu, who rely on the irrigation system to sustain their operations, particularly during drought conditions. Consequently, state ownership is preferable to the possibility of Dole selling the land to other private owners which may raise water rates or disrupt water availability.

Dole itself also testified in support, noting that the company has been seeking to transfer the property to the state for years.

Lawmakers in Hawai‘i right now are looking at the Kona Low flooding and using it as ammunition for one of the most surreal bills under consideration.

, introduced by Sen. Chris Lee (D) in 2025 and revived this month by Rep. Scot Matayoshi (D) in the House. The bill would allow insurance companies to reclaim the money they pay out for a disaster if that disaster is attributed to climate change.

The bill predates the recent Kona Low flooding. In fact, it has more to do with the Lahaina fire, but fans of the legislation are already looking at flooded communities and looking for someone to blame. And more importantly, they’re looking for some deep pockets so we don’t have to pay for the recovery ourselves.

“Given the climate disasters happening right now, we wanted some sort of vehicle moving to address those,” said Kāne

 at Civil Beat. “It’s worth a shot.”

The problem that the bill purports to solve is that insurers have been pulling out of Hawai‘i, or greatly increasing property insurance premiums, following major, expensive payouts such as those stemming from the lethal Lahaina wildfire.

That’s a real problem. A pressing problem. This bill answers it with a metaphysical claim that nothing bad would ever happen in Hawai‘i if it weren’t for climate change, and all climate change is entirely due to evil, dishonest fossil fuel companies.

You have to read it for yourself to see the utter certainty on display. It is packed, top to bottom, with assertions passed off as "findings" and inconvenient truths left out entirely.

One of those inconvenient truths is that human failings by people right here in Hawai‘i might be responsible for damages in a disaster. The bill doesn’t allow for that. It preemptively aims insurance companies at the fossil fuel industry instead.

In that, it’s doing something similar to the $4 billion master settlement over Lahaina rammed through by Gov. Josh Green and the Hawai‘i Supreme Court over the objections of the insurance industry. This matter is still tied up in the courts, mainly because Hawai‘i just decided, on its own, that insurance companies could 

 go looking for responsible third parties to get their money back in the very special case, and the insurance companies are appealing that.

And there are indeed responsible third parties. Hawaiian Electric Co., the state of Hawai‘i , Kamehameha Schools, Spectrum Oceanic LLC, Hawaiian Telcom and affiliates of West Maui Land Co. are paying out that $4 billion dollars because, regardless of what role, if any, that climate change played, all these entities did things, or failed to do things, which in turn allowed a wildfire to destroy a city and kill 102 people. The settlement is their admission.

Normally, when something like that happens, the insurance companies would pay out benefits to policyholders then seek reimbursement from the entities found responsible for the disaster. This is called subrogation. But local government told the insurance companies that they can’t have any of the $4 billion. They weren’t even allowed into negotiations.

In this way, the State of Hawai‘i itself — not climate change — is creating the conditions causing insurance companies to pull out of Hawai‘i and raise premiums. Gov. Green and all these other local power players have told the insurance industry, “If you do business here, you will be left holding the bag.”

The insurance industry, quite reasonably, finds this unacceptable. Would you want to be punished for doing your job?

So back to SB1166. It’s trying to preserve the same kind of total unaccountability for local government and local power players for any future disaster that can remotely be attributed to climate change — and all disasters will get attributed to climate change, believe me — while giving insurance companies a big, fat third-party target in the fossil fuel industry they can go after instead.

Now, I want to talk about that disguise a bit, because it’s thoroughly dishonest.

The bill accuses Big Oil of lying about the potential risks of carbon dioxide’s role in climate change and equates them with tobacco companies using junk science to hide the risks of cigarette smoking. Hawai‘i’s lawmakers are trying to absolve themselves of their role on our fossil fuel-based economy by saying they were misled about oil.

Except they then cite decades of scientific papers and news media coverage about the potential risks of carbon dioxide’s role in climate change. We’ve all been hearing this, since the late 1980s at least, pretty much every damn day.

And why not? It made us all rich. These people advancing this bill — the lawmakers, those in the public who support it — have enjoyed every benefit of modernity that fossil fuels provided.

Are Lee and Matayoshi telling us that if we went back a 150 years, and the coal and oil companies said, “Here’s the 20th century we’re offering, but it might possibly raise the temperature a couple of degrees,” are they telling us that the people in the past would’ve declined?

“Good heavens, no! You keep your abundance, Mr. Fossil Fuel. We’d rather sit here in poverty, in rooms lit by candles, burning wood to cook every meal. We love women washing our clothes by hand in a tub! We love grinding men down with dangerous, laborious construction methods! We love food supplies without refrigeration! We love streets filled with horse poop as we cruelly force these majestic beasts to pull our trolleys and delivery wagons! We love dark streets and hand-pumped water! We love having 70% of the population engaged in back-breaking agriculture!”

Of course not. Of course they wouldn’t. They'd say, "Bring on the air conditioning, please! If the seas rise a little, we'll just scoot back from the shore."

These people now bemoaning modernity and searching for scapegoats have no idea what they’re talking about. They have never experienced a pre-modern life and apparently lack the curiosity and imagination to contemplate how lucky they are to be alive now.

After two back-to-back Kona Low storm systems battered the Islands in as many weeks — bringing heavy rains, flooding and destruction across the state — the National Weather Service in Honolulu says a "gradual return to a more typical northeast trade wind pattern" is expected by midweek.

"A lingering moisture axis over the eastern end of the state, combined with an upper trough, will support periods of locally heavy showers and storms today, mainly over Maui and the Big Island," a NWS 

 shared just after 9:30 a.m. Tuesday noted. "Thereafter, a drier, more stable trade wind pattern is expected from late week through the weekend and into early next week."

, however, remains in effect until 6 p.m. for Maui and 6 a.m.  Wednesday for Hawai‘i Island.

Additionally, a small craft advisory remains in effect for all Hawaiian waters until 6 a.m. Wednesday. The NWS advisory notes that water conditions will be hazardous to small crafts and inexperienced mariners, "especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid navigating in these conditions."
