Drivers take note: a portion of the H-1 freeway will be closed between the Middle Street merge and the Likelike Highway off-ramp from 8 p.m. Saturday, June 6, to 8 a.m. the following day, as part of ongoing roadwork, the state Department of Transportation announced Wednesday.
The work is part of eastbound improvements between the Ola Lane overpass and Likelike Highway off-ramp. Read more about the project here.
According to DOT, the full closure will allow crews to work on an overhead electrical line installation that spans the freeway; this is work that's being done in preparation of a temporary pedestrian bridge that will be installed before the demolition and reconstruction of the Gulick Avenue overpass.
As part of the upcoming closure, DOT says the King Street on-ramp and Airport Viaduct on-ramp to the eastbound highway will be closed, as will the Likelike Highway on-ramp to and Middle Street off-ramp from the westbound H-1 freeway.
DOT says eastbound motorists will be detoured via Middle Street to North King Street, Dillingham Boulevard or North School Street and will rejoin the highway after the Likelike Highway on-ramp. Meanwhile, westbound drivers will be detoured via the Likelike Highway off-ramp to Dillingham Boulevard and North School Street, rejoining the freeway at Middle Street.
Additionally, another full closure of H-1 is scheduled from 8 p.m. July 11 to 8 a.m. the next day to allow for the installation of the temporary pedestrian bridge, weather permitting, according to the DOT.
Contingency dates of Saturday, July 18; Saturday, July 25; and Saturday, Aug. 1 are tentatively planned should any delays arise.
According to the DOT, this project aims to "improve safety and efficiency on the freeway by eliminating a merge and adding emergency shoulders." Work is expected to be finished in February 2028, which is later than the previously anticipated completion date of October 2027.
