The beating of taiko drums is just one of many sounds that make Waikīkī come alive during the 43rd annual Pan-Pacific Festival.

, who runs Hawaiʻi Matsuri Taiko and Somei Taiko with his wife, 

, has a few favorite parts of the festival.

“There's the actual playing taiko part, just to be in front of the crowd,” he said. “As I've gotten older, I don't go to Waikīkī too often, so when I go out there — you kind of get your dosage of the Waikīkī crowd, and all the hustle and bustle, and the fun, right? … A lot of times playing taiko in Waikīkī means playing for people who are watching taiko for the first time, and I think it really represents what they're trying to do through the Pan-Pacific Festival is to serve as a gateway between cultures.”

This year, the Pan-Pacific Festival’s theme is celebrating one ocean, many cultures. The free three-day festival, which is supported by the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority, runs Friday, June 12, through Sunday, June 14. The event includes live music, hula and taiko performances, a Bon dance festival, and a 

 block party with food booths and vendors. Most events take place in Waikīkī, but there are also events at Ala Moana Centerstage.

, began playing taiko when he was about 5 years old. He is an original member of 

, which was founded by his mother, Faye Komagata, in 1984. The taiko group has been part of the Pan-Pacific Festival since the 1990s, he added. Now, participating in the festival comes with special memories.

“It brings back memories of those who were part of the festival in the past, and they're no longer here,” he said. “Namely, my mom. Her name is Faye Komagata. One of the big things that she was a supporter of was using taiko instruments as a way to bring people together.”

Taiko became her medium to teach and promote Japanese culture, he said. Today, Hawaiʻi Matsuri Taiko is one of the state’s oldest Japanese taiko ensembles that performs year-round. The group has performed throughout Hawaiʻi and across the Mainland, as well as in Europe and Japan.

In addition to performing at the festival, Hawaiʻi Matsuri Taiko and Somei Taiko will be part of the 

, which is a collaboration with the Pan-Pacific Festival and offers shows at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 13, at the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani Waikīkī Beach’s Ainahau Ballroom. Featured in those performances is the Japan-based group Wako Daiko, guest musicians from

What is Komagata’s favorite thing about Hawaiʻi Matsuri Taiko and Somei Taiko? Sharing what he has learned in taiko with others, he explained.

“That's what I try to promote it is to help others experience what I experienced,” he said.

For Komagata, taiko is also how he met his wife, who was one of the early members of Hawaiʻi Matsuri Taiko.

“We've known each other since elementary school, and it was through taiko that we fell in love,” he said. “So, you can find love in taiko.”

“I had stepped away from TV for a bit, but Amanda, my wife, and I have this mantra to at least take the call,” Noguchi told Aloha State Daily. “I have photographer 

 he and I hit it off on our initial Zoom call. They paid the farmers and donated funds, and it was just like, ʻWhoa, right on! That’s cool.”

Noguchi noted that the “DIRT” crew did their homework on Hawaiʻi and were respectful to the places (including 

ʻi) and people they visited. He also got to be involved in the storytelling. “What I appreciated most was that Josh asked, what do you want to do?”

In response, he recalled telling him, “My manaʻo is take your lāhui with you.”

“To look forward you have to look backward,” Noguchi echoed in the episode.

That, and including his network of colleagues, friends and family. “People know if you invite me to a party, I will invite a few friends. And I’m lucky it turned out that way.”

He added that he even gained some “street cred" with his students, who follow the docuseries.

For Rosen, one takeaway from meeting — and eating with — these local chefs, farmers and faces was that “There’s a sense here that everyone has something to teach,” he says in the show.

A Montana man who allegedly left antisemitic voicemails threatening to kill Gov. Josh Green did it to “shake him up,” according to court records.

Eric Lee Boltz, 51, was charged on June 3 with interstate cyberstalking and making an interstate communication containing a threat to injure a person after he made nine calls to Gov. Green’s office between Dec. 4 and Dec. 15, 2025, making violent antisemitic threats toward Green and his family.

According to an affidavit by an FBI special agent, Boltz, disguising his voice, first called Green’s office on Dec. 4, leaving a voicemail warning the governor that “We’re gonna f***ing kill you and your f***ing kids. Put them in the f***ing oven, you stinking f***ing Jew, you dumb f***ing Jew.”

Subsequent calls, delivered almost daily over the next two weeks, were similarly vulgar, invoking imagery of Holocaust death camps to threaten Green and his family.

Only one voicemail — the second one, delivered on Dec. 6 — appeared to express any kind of comment on Green’s political policies: the caller reportedly said “get your jobs” before continuing into antisemitic invective.

According to the FBI affidavit, Green’s staffers reported the calls to law enforcement and took undisclosed security measures in response.

FBI investigators traced the calls to a cell phone used by Boltz, who was in Arizona during the time of the calls. When the investigators contacted Boltz on Dec. 22, he quickly discerned the purpose of their visit, reportedly saying “Let me guess: this is about Josh Green out in Hawai‘i?”

Boltz told investigators he had been blocked by Green on Facebook and was frustrated at being unable to contact Green or his team on social media. He admitted to leaving the nine voicemails and said he “just wanted to shake [Green] up,” and was “being weird,” and added that he “went a higher level than [he] should have.”

Boltz was subsequently arrested and had his initial court appearance in Montana on Wednesday, June 10. The case was transferred to U.S. District Court of Hawai‘i; future hearings in the case have yet to be scheduled.

If convicted, Boltz faces up to five years in prison and fines of up to $250,000.

This is the second case involving death threats to a state governor to reach Hawai‘i courts this month. On June 1, Honolulu resident Ronald Saville, 48, was arrested in Texas for sending an email to Michigan State Police threatening to commit a mass shooting at the Michigan State Capitol, and calling the FBI to tell them he intended to kill Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

Saville had previously been convicted in federal court for making threats toward then-president George W. Bush in 2006 and U.S. District Judge Susan Mollway in 2012. If convicted again, he too faces up to five years in prison and up to $250,000 in fines.

Saville’s case will also be heard by the U.S. District Court of Hawai‘i.

Five donors are collectively making a $5 million commitment to the student-athletes at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.

UH on Wednesday announced that Bank of Hawai‘i, First Hawaiian Bank and Matson, along with longtime UH supporters Jack Tsui, chair of the Clarence T.C. Ching Foundation and former First Hawaiian Bank president, and Walter Dods, former CEO of First Hawaiian Bank, will each commit $200,000 annually for the next five years via the UH Foundation to support name, image and likeness, or NIL, opportunities for student athletes.

All told, the donations will provide $1 million per year for NIL support, “

helping UH Mānoa retain homegrown talent, recruit high-level student-athletes and provide equitable, Title IX-compliant opportunities across sports in an increasingly competitive Division I athletics environment," UH says. "It will also strengthen a program that generates statewide pride, visibility and meaningful economic impact for Hawaiʻi."

“This extraordinary commitment reflects something that has always made Hawaiʻi special: people who deeply believe in UH and understand the important role athletics plays in bringing our community together,”  UH Mānoa Director of Athletics Matt Elliott said in the announcement. “College athletics has changed, and our objective is to adapt in a way that reflects the values of this university and our state. Our goal is to build a stable, student-centered foundation that supports academic success, competitive excellence and responsible NIL opportunities while ensuring UH Mānoa remains ‘Our Team, Hawaiʻi’s Team.’”

, it wasn't until 2021 that the NCAA, or the National Collegiate Athletic Association, changed rules to allow students to profit from their name, image and likeness.

NIL "refers to a person's legal right to control how their image is used, including commercially," ESPN reported in March. "In college, student-athletes have long been prohibited from making deals to profit from their fame, so they forfeited their NIL rights by signing on with college sports teams. A combination of NCAA rule changes and state laws restored NIL rights to college athletes, and they've been making sponsorship deals ever since."

In 2020, Arizona State swimmer Grant House sued the NCAA in a landmark class action case alleging that the NCAA’s rules forbidding compensation for college athletes were illegal under antitrust laws, Hawai‘i Tax Foundation President Tom Yamachika 

, noting, "The settlement of that lawsuit in 2025 cleared the way for college athletes to be compensated for their name, image, and likeness (referred to as NIL)." You can read more about that 

According to UH, as NIL compensation becomes a "standard component of Division I athletics nationwide," universities across the U.S. have committed "significant resources to support student-athletes." That includes every member of the Mountain West Conference, which UH Mānoa will join as a full member on July 1, the university notes.

"University leaders estimate UH Mānoa needs approximately $5 million annually in NIL support to remain competitive in the Mountain West and on the national stage," UH says.

, which aimed to affirm the right of student-athletes to engage in NIL activities and establish an endowment to support the compensation of student-athletes, died near the end of this year's Legislative session, 

 final reading of the state Senate in an 11-12 vote, with two senators excused.

UH President Wendy Hensel said in the announcement that the new $5 million commitment provides an "important foundation" for Mānoa athletics, but noted that broader support will still be needed for long-term success.

Dods says that the changing landscape of college athletics requires action.

“People can certainly have different opinions about whether college athletes should be compensated, but the reality is already here,” he said in the announcement. “Every school we compete against is investing in NIL, and if we want Hawaiʻi teams to remain competitive and our student-athletes to stay home, then we — the state, the private sector and the broader community — need to step up in some way. We understand the pressures on the Legislature and that everyone is asking for support. That is part of why the five of us decided to act now and help create a foundation others can build on.”

The university underscored the economic impact athletics bring to the Islands, citing a 2015 study by the UH Mānoa Shidler College of Business. That study found that, based on a $35 million athletics budget at the time, UH Athletics generated $66 million in direct spending, produced $128 million in statewide business sales, generated about $7 million in tax revenue and supported more than 860 jobs across the state. An updated economic impact study is almost finished and expected this summer.

“I genuinely believe we are only scratching the surface of what UH Athletics can become,” Elliott said in Wednesday's announcement. “If we build this foundation the right way — with support from philanthropy, corporate partners and ultimately the state — we can retain local student-athletes, compete at a high level and continue creating opportunities for student-athletes who want to stay home, earn their degrees and represent Hawaiʻi the right way.”

According to Elliott, UH Mānoa Athletics intends to launch a new giving society later this year "to honor the individuals and organizations helping strengthen opportunities for student-athletes and support the department’s long-term future."

We are all familiar with parking meters. Why do you think they exist? Probably everyone who’s asked this question would immediately say these devices are only meant to earn money for local governments.

But everyone who says this would be wrong. 

In fact, parking meters were invented for a different reason, which was simply to make people move their cars.

Before the 1930s, in crowded urban areas, it was common for workers to find convenient places to park close to where they worked, and then to not move their cars for their entire work day. If regulations imposed time limits, policemen would usually mark a tire of a parked vehicle with chalk to check if it stayed in the same place. All the owner had to do was to move the car slightly within the required hour or two, and then the law was not being broken. The result was that other people driving downtown to shop or for appointments couldn’t find parking, and businesses would suffer. 

Forcing people to put coins into meters changed this habit. When the time ran out, you could get a parking ticket, and that has always been enough of a threat that most motorists won’t risk it. If necessary, they’ll park elsewhere, or they’ll move their cars. The result is turnover of parked vehicles, freeing spaces for others. Success!

This realization was the work of a man named Carl Magee. He invented the parking meter, and the first examples of his invention went into use in Oklahoma City on July 16, 1935. They worked, and other cities pretty quickly began to install them too.

Remarkably, some forward-thinkers in Honolulu began advocating for parking meters very early. In fact, this began in May 1936, less than a year after the first ones appeared on streets in Oklahoma. Meters came very close to being placed in downtown Honolulu for a trial period in 1937, but this effort failed.

In January 1938, a local newspaper survey of O‘ahu residents showed an intriguing breakdown: 9% were in favor of parking meters, 23% opposed them, and 68% didn’t yet know what they were. 

Regardless of citizen ignorance, this debate was pretty much constant for years, through 1941 … but the arrival of World War II and the necessity of manufacturing huge amounts of material for military use (which excluded parking meters) shut down the discussion till late 1945, after the war had ended. And then the arguments went right back to where they’d already been.

In September 1947 the City & County of Honolulu passed Ordinance #1085 which laid out the entire process of how parking meters were to be chosen and where they were to be placed. In spite of this legal order, again, nothing happened.

Finally, in the summer of 1950, the Hawai‘i Aeronautical Commission, which oversaw Honolulu International Airport, took charge. The most convenient parking spaces at this facility were, not surprisingly, filled with employee vehicles every day. New rules were created to prohibit this and to create zones for workers’ cars, and parking meters were mandated to be installed. This didn’t happen till August 14, 1951, when 101 of them were placed closest to the air terminal. Once this barrier was broken, the resistance to meters in Hawai‘i was overcome at last. 

Downtown Honolulu’s new parking meters had to be fed for the first time on February 1,  1952. And, just as predicted, they worked - motorists were able to find more empty spaces, which quickly made the majority of drivers into parking meter supporters. Of course the meters provided the City & County of Honolulu a new source of revenue as well. The charges were simple: 1c provided 12 minutes, and 5c bought an entire hour, with a maximum of two hours in total. Only two kinds of coins were accepted by the machines: pennies and nickels. Dimes, if inserted, provided nothing and were a total loss for anyone who used one. People soon learned that they were going to need to carry change to be able to park in the busier parts of downtown Honolulu, since an expired meter would bring a ticket that cost $1 (that's $12.45 in today's dollars).

The following year, meters came to streets in Waikīkī and Kaimukī. Business owners in the former location actively denounced the devices, claiming that they would be unsightly and not in keeping with their desire to make the tourist district less urban in appearance, and presumably more like a tourist’s fantasy ideal. Regardless, on July 13, 1953, the 377 meters along Kalākaua Avenue and some of its intersecting side streets were open for business. The next day, 123 meters mostly on Wai‘alae Avenue in Kaimukī were required to be fed. 

Inspired by Honolulu, Hilo too was soon equipped with parking meters which went into operation on September 15, 1952. And just as in Honolulu, discussions soon began to plan where more were to be placed.

Moving to the present — contrary to what might be assumed, parking meters have not simply continued to increase everywhere over time. As shopping areas in particular have evolved in different Hawai‘i locations, meters have sometimes been deactivated or removed in hopes of luring people back. But don’t get your hopes up! They are definitely here to stay, today being primarily activated by credit cards instead of quarters. However it’s done, you will continue to part with money to be able to leave your car someplace.

When it comes to the dining experience at 

, which recently opened on Sheridan Street, Zishan Hameed — whose mother, Shahnaz Hameed, is the business owner and chef — says the business was inspired by Lahore, the cultural capital of Pakistan.

“We chose to emulate the style of street food in Lahore,” he explains. “If you go to Lahore, it’s a food destination. Street food in Lahore is like Dotonburi in Osaka. You show up to a vendor and you eat it (their dish) the way the chef makes it; it’s how they want to express themselves. It’s like an art; my mom wanted to do the same thing here at Biryani King.”

Biryani King opened in the former spot of a Thai restaurant in the beginning of May. The eatery offers a fast-casual, cafeteria-style concept, in which customers can create their own plates from the available entrees and side dishes.

“We named it ‘Biryani King’ because we wanted something that people would know and be able to recognize,” Hameed says, referring to the popular layered rice dish. “This is soul food, Punjabi food; people from India and Pakistan will recognize it. People who are new to the cuisine will take away an understanding of the region as well.”

Everything is made from scratch by Hameed's mother, known as "Mama Hameed" to customers. 

“She blends the spices herself; she makes the ghee herself,” he says. “It’s the most authentic, homestyle food you’re going to have. The people that grew up in Pakistan and India are going to find a lot of comfort in the food.”

He explains Punjabi cuisine is a blend of both Indian and Pakistani flavors. Punjab refers to the region straddling eastern Pakistan and India’s northwestern border, according to Hameed.

“The state and culture of Punjab existed way before there was a Pakistan and India,” he says. “Pakistan, India and Bangladesh were all part of the British empire for a period of time, but before the British were there, there was Punjab. The culture of Punjab is the same because it was there before the border even existed.

“That’s why we chose to put ‘soul food from the heart of Punjab,’ as our slogan — because that’s really what this food is,” he adds. “It’s not Pakistani or Indian food; it’s older than that.”

Hameed explains that Punjab’s geography makes the cuisine different from Nepali-style food.

“The geography of Punjab is kind of like Hawaiʻi in the summer — it’s hot, it feels tropical,” he says. “The other Indian food on the island is mostly Nepali-style, so you’re going to find more creamy dishes, it’s a little heavier. It’s good for the mountain type of climate — the air’s a little thin, it gets cold for a long time.

“Sometimes the spices can be more bold (in Punjabi-style) because it’s hot,” he adds. “People who love spicy food know that the closer you get to the Equator, the spicier things get, the bolder the flavors get.”

Customers can opt for one- or two-choice plates to try a variety of dishes. During the week, the daily menu features options like meat biryani, butter chicken, oxtail, vegetable biryani, chana masala and more. A typical daily plate costs $14.99 for vegetarian options; $16.99 for a mixed plate and $19.99 for meat plates, according to Hameed.

Nihari is a slow-cooked meat stew that’s known for its gravy, according Hameed.

“This is super, slow-cooked beef; it’s got that rich gravy,” he says. “The chana masala always has cumin and onion. Lamb nihari is made in the same way as the beef nihari; it’s super savory.

“We put butter chicken on the daily menu because everybody recognizes butter chicken,” he adds. “We are hoping butter chicken will bring people in and introduce them to some other types of food that are also interesting.”

There’s also a chef special, which rotates every Friday. According to Hameed, previously featured specials include lamb korma (tender lamb in a fragrant sauce infused with cinnamon and cardamom), daal gosht (a hearty lentil and meat stew), aloo gobi (cauliflower and potatoes sauteed with coriander and cumin) and chicken pulao, a classic rice dish featuring chicken cooked with aromatic spices.

The eatery also offers a Sunday brunch menu with different entrée choices. It’s available in the same cafeteria-style format, but with dishes like samosas, chana chaat, pakora and more, according to Hameed. At the end of the counter are a variety of garnishes, chutneys and raita. The green chutney will be the most familiar to customers, according to Hameed, who says it’s made with mint, fresh cilantro and garlic. Garnishes comprise cilantro, limes and peppers.

“Pakora are a kind of snack; they are fritters made with onions, chickpea flour and spices,” he says. “Samosas — which have a veggie filling — and pakora are for people who are looking for something a little bit lighter, but want something crispy. Chana chaat is like a chickpea salad.”

“Our brunch, as far as we know, is the first and only Punjabi-style breakfast on the island,” adds Nikki Hameed, Zishan’s wife. “We started doing it because we had so many people in our Desi community — Indian and Pakistani people — asking for this kind of food. We basically have the classics that any Desi family is going to have for breakfast.”

She explains that many customers ask about the eatery’s featured curries, which they call “handi.”

“We use the term handi because that (the dish) is named after the big pot that it’s cooked in,” she says. “Curry is a dish that has curry leaves in it. Lamb and beef nihari are some of our handis; they have a specific spice blend and a specific way that they’re slow cooked.”

During brunch, each plate comes with a base of halwa — which is like a pudding made with grains, brown sugar, white sugar, coconut and raisins cooked in ghee, according to Hameed — and puri ($3.99 each), which is airy, deep-fried flatbread.

“My favorite for brunch is lamb nihari with halwa and puri,” Hameed says. “It’s sweet and savory, and then you get the puri. Halwa is a staple of Punjabi cuisine.”

The eatery has a tandoor (a cylindrical oven) in its kitchen, which is used to make naan and tandoori roti.

“The tandoor is the heart of our restaurant experience,” Hameed says. “When you go to eat Pakistani or Indian food, in order to get the naan and tandoori roti to taste the way they do, they have to come from a tandoor.”

He explains the big gas burner heats the walls of the clay, and dough balls are patted onto the walls.

“The wall is so hot that, as soon as the dough slaps (onto it), it sticks on there, but the air is passing over the outside of the naan or roti,” he says. “As it cooks the outside, it makes it bubble. It’s a pretty cool technique.”

Hameed says his family is excited for the community to try his mom’s cooking, which features recipes she grew up with and learned to make from her mother.

“We feel so lucky to be here; the people of Hawaii are so supportive,” Hameed says. “My mom is living out her dream. If you want to come and eat food from someone who uses food as a means of art to express themselves, this is the place to be.”
