For multiple years as a teenager in his native Greece, Costas Theocharidis searched for a solution to an ongoing conundrum. He excelled in volleyball and in school, but his options often included one or the other: turn professional and put his education on hold, or go to college and leave volleyball behind. 

Though aware of the NCAA as an avenue to pursue both, collegiate men's volleyball programs were only permitted to divvy up 4.5 scholarships per team at the time. Theocharidis didn't want his parents to pay for his schooling, so he wasn't going to play for anything less than a full scholarship. 

After receiving the fateful offer from University of Hawai‘i head coach Mike Wilton, Theocharidis arrived in the Islands ready to embark on a journey that became so much more than merely his college destination. Theocharidis immediately and continuously provided return on investment to the only school that offered him a full ride. The 6-foot-2 outside hitter was a first team All-American as a true freshman and the AVCA National Player of the Year as a sophomore. His junior year was capped by a national championship in 2002, the first in program history. He wowed the Hawai‘i crowds with his dynamic play. He still refers to his former teammates as his brothers for life to this day. 

"It's one of those things that when you feel deeply ingrained in the fabric of the UH community, those bonds don't just kind of fade away, right? They're always going to be there," Theocharidis told Aloha State Daily in a recent interview. "UH was the the reason why I left my small town in a rural, remote part of northeastern Greece back in '99 and made that leap of faith. I will forever be indebted to my coaches, coach Mike Wilton and his assistant Tino Reyes, for literally going all-in on me and offering me an athletic scholarship and helping realize my dream of coming to states to study and play at the college level."

Despite his accomplishments on the court in a Warrior uniform, Theocharidis' name became mired in controversy as the subject of an NCAA investigation. 

In the fall of 2003, the NCAA stripped Hawai‘i of its 2002 men's volleyball national championship. It was determined that Theocharidis played in 22 matches with other professionals in Europe before enrolling at Hawai‘i in 1999. Theocharidis did not receive any money for playing the matches in question, nor did he sign a professional contract or have an agent. Still, the NCAA ruled that Theocharidis broke amateurism rules. The University of Hawai‘i was fined $5,000 and ordered to return the 2002 championship trophy. Theocharidis was also ordered to return all of his individual awards.

Before it was taken away, Hawai‘i's four-set victory over Pepperdine in the 2002 national championship match gave the school its first-ever NCAA championship in a men's team sport. "The championship point, I remember that very clearly," 

 "As a team, we worked really hard for it. We were basically on a three-year crusade to make it happen. Memories of a lifetime. I will never forget those memories, and it was it was pretty special moment. I would say it's up there in the top three, top five memories of all time for me in life in general. To have it taken away, obviously that was a pretty gut-wrenching experience. It's one of those things that I didn't necessarily deal with at the time, and over the years it was something that was always in the back of my mind."

Volleyball may have ended unceremoniously for 

Theocharidis, but his education continued. After earning a business administration degree at UH, he worked in private wealth management, where his first job in the field was for a firm in Mānoa. He then got a job at Merrill Lynch in Boston before briefly moving back to Europe to get a master's degree from the London School of Economics and Political Science

Following his time in London, Theocharidis worked in corporate finance in New York. His family has made Boston home for the past handful of years, and he's currently working in real estate development. He's also an assistant coach for the MIT men's volleyball team. 

As the years went on, Theocharidis still felt as though he never got closure during his time playing volleyball at UH. He spent four years cementing himself as one of the program's greats, only to see it taken away over a matter of months. Feelings of angst had festered. 

Stripped 2002 national title notwithstanding, the University of Hawai‘i men's volleyball program won national championships in 2021 and 2022. A pair of Greek standouts in outside hitter 

 and opposite Dimitrios Mouchlias were key members of the team, and Mouchlias reached out to Theocharidis. Following their conversations, Theocharidis decided to take in some UH matches at the Stan Sheriff Center during the 2023 season "for the first time in many, many years," he recalled. 

Theocharidis also went to Virginia to catch the team during the 2023 Final Four. Though Hawai‘i's quest for a threepeat was thwarted by UCLA in the national championship match, witnessing the program's rise evoked countless memories for Theocharidis, who realized he had many unresolved feelings about his time as a Warrior. Since then, he has authored a pair of books documenting his experience with UH.

"I do address my personal journey from Greece to Hawai‘i, and having the ride of a lifetime, discussing this whole eligibility ruling and the stripping of the championship," Theocharidis says. "It allowed me to a certain extent to get some closure on the whole thing, and it allowed me to move on with my life as well, because it's something that you cannot change. Whatever happened, happened." 

On Friday evening, all those emotions will be revisited yet again as Theocharidis becomes inducted into the UH Athletics Circle of Honor for the Class of 2026 at the Stan Sheriff Center. 

The announcement was made over a year in advance

 during a Hawai‘i women's volleyball match on Oct. 12, 2025. 

"I'm very thankful to the committee members for taking this very bold step and inducting me," he said. "When you contextualize it, you bring in the full picture of all the stuff that happened in the past, and I'm sure it was not an easy decision. I'm just hoping that the '02 team at some point will be able to join in the Circle of Honor because we did it as a team, and I was surrounded by awesome teammates."

Might the ruling on the 2002 Hawai‘i men's volleyball be revisited, ending with the championship banner being re-raised in the Stan Sheriff Center rafters? 

"I have no control over those things, right? I'm just hoping that the university will step up and recognize that great team," Theocharidis said. "The controversial decision to take away the 2002 championship made me a pariah overnight in college sports. You have active student-athletes basically playing at the highest level in in the Olympics with professional teammates, obviously. And where we are nowadays, the whole concept of being a student-athlete with the existence of transfer portal and NIL, being a student is the priority, right? Getting that degree, graduating, is supposed to be the priority. At least that was my priority when I came to the to the states. I wanted to get a degree.

"I'm cautiously optimistic that the 2002 team, to a certain extent, will eventually be recognized as well, but all those things take time. I don't know when or If it's going to happen, but I'm doing the best I can to actually raise the issue, make everybody aware of that, because again, you have a new (university) president and AD. I'm hoping that at some point, we'll come full circle, and that team will be recognized, and then the banner will be re-raised in the arena."

As Hawai‘i voters begin receiving their ballots for the general election, they may ask: What does Constitutional Amendment Question 2 actually mean?

 to the state constitution will be on the ballot this election. One of those is self-explanatory — should the state Senate be allowed 60 days to appoint judges and justices between April and January, instead of the current 30 days — but the other may seem complicated.

Constitutional Amendment Question 2 asks whether the state should allow the counties to issue “Resilient Infrastructure for Shelter and Equity bonds” — or RISE bonds — to help fund public improvement projects. These bonds would be repaid by future tax revenues on the new developments funded by said bonds, without imposing additional taxes or raising tax rates, and would be exempt from the counties’ debt limit.

The proposed amendment was introduced in the state Senate this year with the stated purpose of attempting to lower the development costs of affordable housing. As noted in 

 — the measure introducing the amendment — the development of new homes requires large up-front investments in water, drainage and other infrastructure.

Rep. Luke Evslin, chair of the House Committee on Housing, said Wednesday that the solution to this has been either to pass on those up-front costs to homebuyers, leading to rising house prices and a lack of affordable housing, or to raise taxes.

RISE bonds would, in theory, present a third option by allowing counties to fund that infrastructure, with the debt being serviced by future increases in tax revenue specifically generated by those selfsame new developments made possible by the infrastructure.

This is not an original concept; 48 other states, excluding Hawai‘i and Arizona, use “tax increment financing bonds,” which operate on the same principle.

Evslin told Aloha State Daily Wednesday that it’s only due to a quirk in Hawai‘i's constitution that the state doesn’t also use these bonds. He said the constitution as written does not permit the counties to issue such bonds, hence the need for a constitutional amendment.

Evslin emphasized that the bonds do not bring an increase in taxes. The property taxes paid by new homeowners in a new development made possible by the bonds will be at the same tax rate as any other comparable development, but the revenues from those taxes will go to pay off the bond, rather than back to the county.

However, Gov. Josh Green said Wednesday that this does not mean the bonds will reduce the counties' tax revenues, as the tax revenues generated by these new developments do not currently exist. Rather than reduce existing revenues, the bonds will simply redirect some future revenues.

Furthermore, the amendment would exempt RISE bonds from counties’ debt limits, which Evslin said means a county could issue any number of the bonds — although, he added, because developments funded via the bonds will still require taxpayer-funded services such as police and fire department responses, counties will likely be judicious in how many they issue.  

Evslin said that the tax increment financing bonds are typically structured conservatively so that the municipality that issues them takes on little to no risk. He said in the event of a disaster wiping out the infrastructure investments — something he said has happened in California — typically the bondholder, not the municipality, is left holding the bag.

The proposal was nigh-universally popular as it passed through the legislature, with major unions such as the Pacific Resource Partnership and the General Contractors Association of Hawai‘i voicing strong support of the amendment. This week, the Chamber of Commerce Hawai‘i urged members to vote yes on Question 2. 

One of the few people to testify against the proposal, Hawai‘i County resident Cindy Freitas, warned about the potential for lost tax revenue and the lack of guardrails for how much of a county’s tax base can be captured by the bonds.

But Green and several other lawmakers spoke in favor of the amendment Wednesday. Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi said there is a roughly 28,000 unit deficit of housing on O‘ahu, which he said RISE bonds can help to reduce.

Kaua‘i Mayor Derek Kawakami called the bonds “a monumental change to how we fund infrastructure,” adding that, after the many disasters of 2026, it is clear that the state’s resilience is dependent on having modern and reliable infrastructure.

“Communities can only be as resilient as the roads that connect us,” Kawakami said.

’s Trini Kaopuiki Clark is planning to leave her role as president and CEO at the end of October for a new opportunity at Hawaiʻi Medical Service Association, or HMSA.

Chief Development Officer Madalyn Kenney Bumanglag will step up to serve in the interim to continue the organization’s “work of creating life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses across the state,” per an announcement from the nonprofit earlier this month.

“Trini has led Make-A-Wish Hawaiʻi with heart, vision and an unwavering commitment to wish children and their families,” said Board Chair Cayenne Pe‘a in a statement. “We are immensely proud of all she has accomplished and deeply grateful for the strong, resilient organization she leaves behind. Madalyn’s experience, steady leadership and devotion to our mission make her exceptionally prepared to guide the organization forward. With our dedicated staff, volunteers, donors and community partners, Make-A-Wish Hawaiʻi will continue ensuring children across the state experience the hope, strength and joy of a life-changing wish.”

Clark became Make-A-Wish Hawaiʻi’s president and CEO in 2019, after a 20-year career in broadcast journalism. Under her leadership, the organization navigated granting wishes through the Covid-19 pandemic amid gathering restrictions, moved headquarters and saw an increase in annual fundraising.

“Although I am stepping away from my role, this mission — and the incredible community behind it — will always remain close to my heart. I look forward to staying connected to the mission as a volunteer and donor,” she told Aloha State Daily in an emailed response to questions.

Clark shared more with ASD about her tenure with the nonprofit and what’s on the horizon.

What prompted this decision for you to leave Make-A-Wish Hawaiʻi right now?

The opportunity came to me during a season of transition for my family, when we were preparing our youngest to leave for college and my husband had recently decided to leave his job. That made me more open to change than I might have been even a month or two earlier. Additionally, the timing felt right because Make-A-Wish Hawaiʻi is strong, stable and well-positioned for the future. With a talented leadership team, a committed board and a clear strategic direction in place, I felt confident that this was the right moment to pass the torch and embrace a new challenge. That said, leaving Make-A-Wish Hawaiʻi was one of the most difficult decisions of my career. The mission and the people there have had a profound impact on me over the years.

Ultimately, the opportunity to join HMSA as vice president of strategic communications and marketing was one that aligned with both my professional interests and my desire to continue serving the people of Hawaiʻi in a different capacity.

What skills/experiences from this role will you take with you to the next one?

This role has taught me so much about leadership and the critical importance of people, purpose, and relationships. I've also learned a lot about how to build and lead high-performing teams, navigate challenges, communicate through periods of change, and align diverse stakeholders around a common mission. 

Most importantly, Make-A-Wish has reinforced my belief in the importance of aloha. Almost always, if your decisions and actions are guided by aloha and empathy, you're going to be okay. Every decision we make affects real people, and I will carry that perspective with me to HMSA.

How was the organization when you first joined, versus how you are leaving it? What improvements around staffing, operations, funding, etc., are you most proud of?

When I joined Make-A-Wish Hawaiʻi, it was already a respected organization with a passionate team and strong community support. Today, the chapter has greater capacity, more efficient operations and a stronger foundation for long-term sustainability.

I’m particularly proud of the investments we’ve made in our people and the strong, healthy culture we’ve built around mission excellence and employee engagement. I’m also proud of how we guided the chapter through the pandemic, achieved record-breaking fundraising results, and earned local and national recognition for excellence and innovation. Those honors include first place in Hawaiʻi Business Magazine’s Best Places to Work for Women category and first place in Pacific Business News’ Hawaiʻi’s Best Workplaces competition.

Most importantly, we've remained focused on the children we serve. Every operational or financial improvement was designed to ensure that all eligible children can receive the transformative experience of a wish.

What is your most treasured memory from your time with 

Without question, I will miss the people. I have had the privilege of working alongside an extraordinary staff, board of directors, volunteers, medical partners, donors, and wish families who show up every day to make the impossible possible for local children.

I will also miss witnessing the life-changing impact of a wish. There is something incredibly powerful about seeing a child reclaim hope, joy, and strength during a difficult medical journey. Being part of those moments is indescribable. I never take for granted the privilege of being part of those experiences.

It’s difficult to choose just one memory because there have been so many extraordinary moments. I’ll never forget Lyla’s wish to be a Navy SEAL, when more than 100 volunteers showed up to play the “bad guys,” or watching Atticus perform on stage with his musical hero, Mr. Rob. I will also treasure the memories I’ve made with our amazing team. They inspire me every day, and I am a better person for having worked alongside them.

Currently, what are the organization's short- and long-term priorities?

In the short term, our priority is ensuring that every eligible child in Hawaiʻi has access to the life-changing power of a wish. That includes increasing referrals, reducing wait times, and continuing to rebuild and strengthen the wish pipeline.

Long term, the focus is on sustainable growth: strengthening awareness of the mission, deepening community partnerships and securing the organization’s financial stability for generations to come. The recently adopted strategic plan provides a clear roadmap for achieving those goals.

What is your best piece of advice for your successor?

Stay focused on the mission and never lose sight of the child at the center of every decision.

And remember, people are at the core of everything we do. Make-A-Wish Hawaiʻi has been successful because of its people. Invest in your staff, trust their expertise, support their growth, and create a culture where everyone feels seen, heard, appreciated, and connected to the impact they're making.

Maui Police Chief John Pelletier stood beside his lawyer in downtown Honolulu on Friday. He said the mayor of his county is under criminal investigation.

Mayor Richard Bissen says he knows of no active investigation.

Days earlier, the Maui Police Commission had voted 6-0 to put Pelletier on paid leave. It is reviewing how Pelletier oversaw the department’s criminal intelligence unit. That unit’s top officer was arrested in August and 

“I think somebody’s trying to influence the mayor’s race on Maui,” Bissen told 

. He faces Council Member Yuki Lei Sugimura on Nov. 3. Ballots reach mailboxes this week.

Pelletier said the claims involve “corruption, fraud and retaliation.” He would not name the agency leading the case. He also would not describe a second inquiry he says his own department has opened.

Council Chair Alice Lee says the lead agency in the first case is the state attorney general. That office would not say whether any case exists. “We’re talking about criminal allegations of embezzlement,” Lee told 

, speaking of a former administration employee.

Maui will vote without knowing whether the chief’s claim is true. That makes it one more thing to weigh, beside a record voters already have.

In April, Bissen’s former chief of staff, Leo Caires, filed a whistleblower suit. I 

 about it at the time. Caires alleges he found a suspect invoice in the Office of Economic Development and traced it to one of the mayor’s aides. He says he was fired when he kept digging.

Earlier, Luana Mahi ran that office. On her watch, nonprofits tied to her family and a former business associate received more than $1.2 million in county money. She was placed on paid leave and later fired.

The mayor’s office has not always been forthcoming, either. Bissen was mayor when Lahaina burned. At 3:32 p.m. that day he texted his emergency management chief: “I’m coming back up after my Dr. appt.” The text surfaced eight months later in the attorney general’s fire report.

 Bissen’s secretary had canceled the appointment. It said the Mayor spent the rest of the day in the county building. A few weeks later, in a 

, the county changed its account. “After further checking,” it said, Bissen had seen his cardiologist in Wailuku at 3:20 p.m.

Bissen may be right that someone is trying to influence the election. But what he calls influence is information. Voters have a right to know what their leaders have done in office.

If Pelletier has real cause to suspect the mayor, speaking before the vote is rational. A chief who has just been put on leave also has his own reasons to talk. Voters can weigh Pelletier’s credibility too.

The claim is unproven, and it should not settle anyone’s vote. Voters can answer influence with calm attention to the facts about each candidate. Then they choose who will best represent them. That’s how democracy works.

Most plates come with corn, a side salad, and a choice of starch (Japanese rice, mashed potatoes or a baguette). 

The entrees are delivered piping hot to diners’ tables with a protective wrapping around the plate. If you choose to add sauces — like homemade steak sauce — the protective layer is intended to prevent the sauce from splashing.

Diners can add toppings to their steaks for an additional charge. Options include garlic whipped cream ($3), truffle butter ($5), or grated daikon with ponzu ($3).

Customers can end with desserts like homemade ice cream and sorbet ($8) or custard pudding ($10).

Dining reservations are accepted for groups of six or more. Limited customer parking is available right outside the restaurant.

Outrigger Hospitality Group recently unveiled newly reimagined guest rooms at its original flagship location, Outrigger Waikīkī Beach Resort.

It's the first guest-facing milestone in a larger $100 million refresh that's underway to reimagine the resort as a "

design-led destination at the birthplace of modern surf culture," a recent announcement noted.

The new guest rooms were designed by PowerStrip Studio in collaboration with WCIT Architecture and DTL – a Hawaiian Strategy Studio.

According to the announcement, among other new design features, each room features "

," or "Beloved children are the plants," a custom mural of Queen Emma's lily garden by Native Hawaiian artist Kamea Hadar; room numbers are paired with surf photography by Zak Noyle; and "graphic rivulets inspired by ʻĀpuakēhau Stream" wind throughout the property.

Monica Salter, vice president of global communications and social responsibility at Outrigger, told Aloha State Daily in an emailed response to questions that the resort has 524 rooms across 17 floors, and every room is being redesigned. Room renovations began in April and all 524 rooms are expected to be finished by December, she says.

Outrigger Hospitality Group started the broader $100 million refresh of the resort 

"The guest rooms are just the first phase," Salter says. "We’ll have a grand arrival staircase that traces the path of ʻĀpuakēhau Stream, the freshwater stream that once ran from the Koʻolau Mountains to this shoreline, an open-air lobby framing Waikīkī and Diamond Head, a surfboard exhibit, cultural center and a newly expanded Voyager 47 Club Lounge, more than three times its former size. Work on our public spaces, pool and retail is ongoing. We’re now only offering newly renovated guest rooms and suites with the rest of the transformation to follow."

When asked why the hospitality group wanted to undertake the $100 million transformation now, Salter told ASD, "

This is where our story began — on the grounds of the original Outrigger Canoe Club, where Duke Kahanamoku helped introduce modern surf culture to the world. Sixty years later, we saw an opportunity to reinvest in this important place and honor that legacy while looking ahead. The transformation is grounded in the history and culture of Waikīkī, while creating a resort that reflects where Outrigger is headed."

The goal is to make the experience feel more connected to the place, she says.

"The design draws from the history of the site, from ʻĀpuakēhau Stream and Queen Emma’s garden to Waikīkī’s role in the origins of modern surfing. Those stories are reflected in details throughout the resort, from the arrival staircase and artwork to the guest room and corridor design," Salter say. "At the same time, the things that have made this resort a Waikīkī landmark remain: its beachfront location, cultural connections and longtime partners and experiences, including Faith Surf School, Blue Note Hawaiʻi and Henry Kapono’s Duke’s on Sunday performances. The physical spaces are being thoughtfully refreshed while preserving the character and sense of place that guests have long associated with Outrigger."
