The University of Hawai‘i men's volleyball team won its third national championship of the decade and first since 2022 with a 1

5-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-20 victory over UC Irvine at the Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles on Monday afternoon. 

Hawai‘i finishes its season 30-5 overall, good for the first 30-win season in program history. Meanwhile, UC Irvine, which defeated No. 1 UCLA and No. 4 Ball State in order to reach Mondayʻs championship match, finishes its 2026 campaign 21-9. 

UH, which advanced to the national championship with a 

win over rival Long Beach State in Saturday's semifinals

, fell behind to the Anteaters early.  UC Irvine pounced on the Rainbow Warriors early, jumping out to a 16-5 lead in the first set en route to its 1-0 lead. 

From there, the Rainbow Warriors took control over the next three sets. Kristian Titriyski had a match-high 16 kills for the ʻBows, while Adrien Roure added 15 and tournament MVP Louis Sakanoko had 12 kills on 20 swings to go with his six digs, three blocks, three assists and three service aces. 

In reaching the 30-win mark, UH finished one win above their 29-3 record in 2023 in which it lost in the national championship match. 

In 2026, the ʻBows won the national title despite never ranked No. 1 in the AVCA poll. Heading into the tournament, they were the No. 2 seed nationally. 

"It wasn't a perfect year but it finished in a perfect way," head coach Charlie Wade said in his postmatch interview. 

On Wednesday, May 13, the University of Hawai‘i will hold a free national championship celebration at the Stan Sheriff Center. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., while the event begins at 6. Parking will cost $10 at the UH-Mānoa structure and concessions will not be open.

Kamohai and Tristyn Kalama owe the City and County of Honolulu 

 for two illegal short-term rentals. One is a waterfront property in Kāneʻohe, listed at $1,000 a night with a three-night minimum.

After Civil Beat called the property owner for comment, the listing was quietly changed to a 30-day minimum. The fines remain unpaid.

Readers new to the Kalamas may need a brief introduction. Alongside their rental properties, they run three businesses. The first is fixing and flipping: they buy old houses, renovate them, and sell them. The second is a television show on HGTV, "Renovation Aloha," which shows the work. The third is a learning group called Flip Tribe, where they teach their methods through workshops, mentorship, and conferences.

Kamohai handles the numbers — purchase analysis and contractor management. Tristyn handles the design. They are husband and wife, and their "Renovation Aloha" episodes make for compelling viewing.

The Kalamas say they create jobs for locals, support the skilled trades, and keep families housed. There is truth in this. Old houses need renovating. Their work creates real jobs for contractors and tradespeople. Most homeowners cannot manage routine upkeep on their own house. That is part of why these properties fall into disrepair. Renovating a home requires financing, contractor management, and a tolerance for risk. It is real work.

There is a difference between running a business and teaching others how to run one. Competence is enough for the first. The second asks for mastery, the kind that earns the right to teach.

The Le family bought one of the show’s first houses — a Kalihi home with a 

. The renovation, as televised, cost $425,000. It involved major structural work. One house was jacked up and joined to a second to create a single-level home. The permits filed with the city only covered some windows and a carport, with a value of $80,000.

After moving in, the Le family noticed mold in their son’s room. When they ripped off the drywall, they found cracks in the concrete siding wide enough for daylight to pass through.

Civil Beat reporter Christina Jedra found the same pattern on 

 in the show’s first season: Construction began before a permit was issued. The fines totaled about $20,000 across four projects. The show claimed $1.3 million in profits. Season 2 

Some business models start work before permits issue and treat the resulting fines as a budget line. The people running these businesses may not be ready to teach others. The fines, in that arrangement, are not overhead, they are the cost of not yet knowing the trade.

The Kalamas, in this, are part of something larger. A popular television show and a few hundred thousand Instagram followers do not, by themselves, demonstrate competence. They demonstrate celebrity. We have begun to confuse the two. A whole industry has grown up around the confusion. The Kalamas sell three-day workshops at 

. They also sell membership in a mentorship community, promising students their first flip in six months.

There used to be a clearer line between apprentice and master. You learned a trade by serving under someone who had practiced it. Mastery was slow and quiet, and it was the only kind of mastery there was. We have replaced it, in much of life, with a short course — three days, six months, your first flip. It promises the result without the formation.

The appetite is common to all of us. We prefer to be slightly more than we are, slightly sooner — and we prefer not to wait. The writer of Proverbs saw the pattern long ago: wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers little by little will increase it.

The Kalamas do not put their faith forward on air the way Chip and Joanna Gaines do. But they do mention it often on their social media. Their company is named Stand Firm Developments. The phrase is one of Paul’s recurring themes, a call to endure, to hold one’s ground.

A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, the Proverbs say. The question is not whether renovating old homes has value. It does. The question is whether the people most visible doing the work are the right people to teach it — and what the rest of us are buying when we sign up for the course.

, known for its all-you-can-eat wagyu shabu shabu dinner experience, just opened its second location in Kapahulu Shopping Center.

The new Kapahulu restaurant space is in the former place of Central Pacific Bank. Mikiya Honolulu 

The menu at the Kapahulu eatery is mostly the same as the one at the Kapiʻolani location. The gold wagyu set is popular and costs $88 per person. All individuals in the same dining party must order the same dinner set. 

There’s a 90-minute dine-in time limit. Customers can order from their tables using a digital touchscreen system.

Hot pot broths range from sukiyaki and house (ponzu) broth to spicy miso. The meat selection includes Japanese A5 wagyu brisket, chuck rib-eye and shoulder cut. Other options include Australian wagyu, American wagyu, Kurobuta pork and more.

The AYCE experience also includes unlimited veggies and noodles, tea, seasonal fruit and soft serve ice cream.

The self-serve veggie bar is a new feature at this location; the Kapiʻolani eatery has pre-set vegetable platters. Customers can take their pick from the variety at the self-serve bar. Options include mushrooms, lettuce, corn, tofu, noodles and more.

Customers can also choose from a variety of sauces and condiments, including garlic, ponzu sauce, sesame sauce, green onions and more.

The Kapahulu location also features an automatic rice dispenser, allowing customers to choose from small, medium or large bowls of rice.

The AYCE experience also includes a seasonal seafood platter and choice of a specialty dish (one per person).

The seafood platter’s selection can include crab, mussels, scallops and prawns, depending on availability. Meanwhile, specialty dishes include wagyu bone marrow, wagyu nigiri, sweet shrimp sashimi and wagyu tartare. The wagyu bone marrow and wagyu nigiri come highly recommended.

Customers can conclude their meal with complimentary milk tea or hot tea, along with self-serve vanilla or Dole Whip pineapple soft serve.

Mikiya’s Kapahulu location is open nightly from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. Customers can look forward to a happy hour menu coming soon.

The rhetoric on Friday when the Legislature passed SB2471, was 

. All but one of the legislators voted for this attempt to nullify the Citizen’s United decision for Hawai‘i, and did so with bold claims. We’re standing up for Hawai‘i! We’re standing against dark money! We’re making history! We’re protecting democracy!

These people are acting like they personally threw Sauron’s ring into Mauna Kea and are just waiting for the eagles to carry them away now that Hawai‘i is free of Corporate Mordor’s dark money.

Bain Capital. The United Arab Emirates. Walmart. Citigroup. Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America. Silicon Valley Community Foundation. Chan Zuckerberg. Bill & Melinda Gates. Service Employees International Union. Mitsubishi. Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office.

Tens of millions of dollars in donations from corporate interests, from foreign entities, from Silicon Valley, from Wall Street, from billionaires and their foundations, from the biggest unions in America.

Am I talking about the sources of dark money that ruined America’s democracy, drowning out the voices of everyday citizens in a flood of corporate spending?

No. I’m talking some of the many donors, over the years, who have funded the Center for American Progress, according to 

The same Center for American Progress that was credited again and again by Hawai‘i state legislators as they passed SB2471 on Friday. The same Center for American Progress mentioned directly to me by lawmakers I interviewed.

“We’re the little state that could,” said Rep. Della Au Belatti on Friday as she urged the Legislature to pass the bill. She described CAP’s Tom Moore as “the legal mastermind behind this effort” and said “this state shouldn’t turn away the experts like CAP.”

This isn’t some disinterested, academic public policy institute. 

, the White House chief of Staff for Pres. Bill Clinton from 1998 to 2001, 

This is an organization described, sometimes admiringly, as Bill Clinton’s post-defeat shadow government, as Hillary Clinton’s government-in-waiting, as the brains of the Obama administration, as the adults actually in charge of the Biden administration while the 

 through his duties. Its staff and board of directors are, and always have been, a revolving door of people in and out various 21st-century Democrat administrations.

CAP, on its website, currently conceals its list of top donors, claiming this is to protect them from retribution by the Trump administration but in fact, as the 

 reported in 2015, the organization has a long and controversial history of hiding the names of its supporters.

At that time in 2015, as the Washington Post reported, Podesta was “set to run [Hillary] Clinton’s presidential campaign,” and the group’s then president 

 was “a longtime Clinton confidante and adviser.”

Just a reminder, folks: The group Citizens United won its Supreme Court case in pursuit of showing a documentary critical of Hillary Clinton. CAP has been avenging this insult to her honor ever since.

That’s the Center for American Progress. Capital Research Center calls it, “

Oh, and it has a fundraising arm, as well, the Center for American Progress Action Fund. In 2024, it donated $147,332 directly to leftwing candidates and causes, from Kamala Harris to 

With all that in mind,  think of the power plays being made here. Sen. Jarrett Keohokalole and Rep. Della Au Belatti stood out as fervent champions of this bill. And are both 

This move burnishes their credentials with the DC power players. This bill doesn’t move the needle on corruption in Hawai‘i but it does a lot for for these two. When Belatti praises CAP, she’s reminding them she did them a favor.

So now SB2471 awaits the signature of Gov. Josh Green. Do you think the heavyweights who back CAP are white-knuckled in fear that their influence will be silenced?

As far as I know, the only Legislator sounding a cautionary note on Friday was Rep. Scot Matayoshi who, while praising it, also said, “We spent an inordinate amount of time trying to pass this bill in a responsible way, in a way that would ensure that Hawai‘i interests are not harmed at the expense of Mainland interests coming in to spend money here. … My fear is that bill will work a little too well.”

You see, SB2471 restricts Hawai‘i-based corporations and other entities from spending on elections, either locally or on the Mainland. But it also says that corporations based in other states are bound by the same restrictions if they do business here. That, he says, it likely to get challenged and he seems to believe it’s a challenge we’re likely to lose.

So the bill contains what Matayoshi calls a fail-safe. Others might call it a poison pill. If a single court anywhere decides a case against any part of SB2471, its fail-safe language says that all of SB2471 self-destructs. It will be null and void, in its entirety.

Maybe that’s what will happen, if Green signs this into law and it takes effect Jan. 1, 2027. There are  other reasons it could be challenged that I 

The legislators pushing this clearly believe, for some reason, that this bill will not put them out of office or harm their ability to gain financial support. They seem pretty self-assured that they’ll remain in power after this passes, maybe win their runs for bigger and better offices. Now why might that be? 

Maybe, at heart, this bill isn’t revolutionary at all. Maybe it just preserves the status quo.

When you get right down it, SB2471 doesn’t change anything about the influence of money on politics in Hawai‘i. Note the bill’s emphasis: Electioneering. It seeks to remove a corporation’s ability to spend money in any way, for or against candidates running for office, or for or against initiatives put on ballots.

It does not otherwise remove any ability to spend money on 

Big money groups can still spend millions all year long on high-priced lobbyists who meet with legislators. They just can’t spend any money to speak directly to voters.

Big money groups, including Mainland interests, could still do what CAP has done here and simply write legislation for Hawai‘i lawmakers and hand it over to them to introduce.

 in front of politicians, promising a cushy life after office. None of that changes.

On Friday, Sen. Karl Rhoads, who introduced the bill, described the growth of so-called “dark money” spending in elections, from mere millions before Citizens United to tens of billions in the last presidential election.

 last week that bills like this do nothing to stop billionaires who simply spend their money on elections as individuals, rather than as corporations.

Hawai‘i legislators have said they needed to pass this legislation to “restore people’s trust in elections.”

But is corporate spending really the reason people in Hawai‘i don’t trust elections and 

, with no meaningful check on voter IDs, no default to the privacy and safety of the ballot booth. Legislators could fix this any time but won’t, in fact, they’re the ones who instituted this weak imitation of true elections. This session, they further weakened election integrity by passing a law that automatically opts-in to voter registration anyone who gets a Hawai‘i driver’s license.

3. Their poor results once in office. This very bill being a case in point. Think of all the time spent on this Mainland crusade — an “inordinate amount of time,” Matayoshi said —  when it could have been spent solving Hawai‘i's real problems.

<title>Pipikaula Corner: How the Clinton White House just bamboozled Hawai‘i</title>

The Legislature was jubilant as it passed SB2471 on Friday, seeking to overturn the effects of the Citizens United decision in Hawai‘i and get big money and outside influences out of our elections. The irony is, Mainland power players were pulling our strings the whole time.

Pipikaula Corner: How the Clinton White House just bamboozled Hawai‘i

, owned by chef Adam Gilbert and business partner Chris Natale, has been a project that’s been years in the making — specifically since 2019, Gilbert says. The eatery is located at the ʻEwa Villages Golf Course, which is a municipal golf course, but the restaurant is open to the public.

“There’s a big push to put local businesses to occupy concessions for the City and County,” Gilbert says. “I’ve been working on this project since 2019, and then it got put on the backburner during the Covid-19 pandemic.”

In the meantime, Gilbert sold his Kapolei-based restaurant, Plantation Tavern, in 2020 — the eatery was open for about six years — and opened Monarch Poke shop in Pearl Kai Shopping Center in 2021.

“The poke shop was really just to go back in the community and see what’s going on,” he says. “It was almost an experimental thing. We really lived on catering there.”

Fairway Tavern’s current space was vacant since 2019, according to Gilbert.

“For the last six to seven years, it was called The Ville; everybody in ʻEwa knows The Ville,” he says. “The bid (for this space) went out about two years ago and we won it.”

Since December 2024, Gilbert and Natale worked on renovating the restaurant — “We did the floor, we repainted the whole place,” Gilbert says — and the eatery’s tables and chairs came from now-closed Sansei and D.K. Steakhouse.

The eatery is called Fairway Tavern to pay homage to both, its golf course location and Gilbert’s former Plantation Tavern.

“If you look at our logo compared to Plantation Tavern, it’s very similar,” he says. “The intent is to remember — subconsciously or not — that we’re the same ownership, same business and same food.

“The whole concept of the tavern almost fits in better here than it did in Kapolei,” he adds. “You’re on the plantation here. When you pull in off Renton Road, those are all original plantation buildings.”

Gilbert sold the Monarch Poke space in Pearl Kai a few weeks ago, and announced its closing on social media.

“I was going to run them both, but at the end of the day, I couldn’t figure out how to do both,” he says.

The eatery’s grab-and-go section — open from 7 a.m. — is designed with golfers in mind, as it features musubis, croissant breakfast sandwiches, breakfast burritos and breakfast bentos, according to Gilbert.

“We have five different breakfast bentos, which have white rice, scrambled eggs, and meats like Portuguese sausage, Spam, corned beef, and Little Smokies,” Gilbert says. “We run musubis and hot dogs all day for the golfers with a fast turnaround on the ninth hole.”

The lunch menu, which is served from 11 a.m., features a similar style to Plantation Tavern, Gilbert notes. Many dishes feature larger portions, designed to be shared family-style.

“We put pride and care into what we do; we make everything from scratch,” Gilbert says. “We do a lot of upscale local food — Hawaiian, Chinese, Filipino, Japanese and Korean — and we use French techniques, but not to be pretentious. It’s just to add more flavor and depth in what we do.”

Several dishes feature the same recipes from the Plantation Tavern days — including the eatery’s signature poke nachos — but some dishes are new creations.

“I tried not to do too many similar dishes because I feel like I’ve grown a lot in seven years,” Gilbert says. “At the same time, there’s stuff the community won’t accept that we don’t have.”

The poke nachos have been a longtime customer favorite, both at Plantation Tavern and at Monarch Poke. They feature a bed of crispy wonton chips topped with your choice of spicy or shoyu poke, chopped tomato and avocado; they’re drizzled with homemade unagi sauce and Sriracha aioli.

“We do spicy and shoyu poke only,” Gilbert says. “It’s the same recipe as Plantation Tavern; the first one (poke nachos) we did was in 2012.”

The sizzling sisig ($16) features crispy pork belly that’s chopped and mixed with red onions, garlic, ginger and Thai chili.

“We put a calamansi dashi aioli on it, and a fried egg,” Gilbert says. “We’ve never done that dish before; it’s super good.”

He explains that certain dishes on the menu — including miso yakitori chicken ($12), crispy chicken wings ($14 for six, $21 for 12), garlic chicken ($14) and Kochujang beef skewers ($21) — are specifically included as affordable options for golfers.

“There are some very intentionally selected items for the golf community to find value,” Gilbert says. “The chicken yakitori is new; it’s five chicken sticks with 12 ounces of chicken. You can get that for $12, you can get a scoop of rice for $2; for $14, you have a whole plate.

“Everything’s homemade,” he adds. “We cut the chicken, marinade it for three days in a miso marinade, then skewer and grill it.”

The Korean-style beef skewers are made with rib-eye and come with cucumber kimchi. Meanwhile, the garlic chicken features the same recipe from Plantation Tavern.

If you want something lighter, options range from fresh sashimi-grade ahi (market price) — “We get fish from the auction,” Gilbert says — to watercress, tofu and tomato salad ($16). The latter features watercress from Sumida Farm; the salad is topped with baked tofu and served with a slightly spicy patis (fish sauce) dressing.

The menu also features several creative dishes, each with a story behind it. The smoked crab and kimchi dip ($14) with wonton chips used to be a special at Plantation Tavern. It was also on the menu in a takeout deli container at Monarch Poke, Gilbert says. The current rendition comes in a ramekin and it’s baked.

“It’s almost like a crab artichoke dip, but it’s a smoked crab and kimchi dip,” he says. “It’s got some spice; it’s a good appetizer or shared item.”

Gilbert also explains that the scallop noodles ($17) on the menu have been a long time coming. He made a crispy garlic chili oil poke at Monarch Poke; the Fairway Tavern dish features sauteed garlic bay scallops that are seasoned with salt and pepper, and added to a garlic compote butter mixture.

“Once that (the garlic compote butter) melts down, we throw in an egg noodle and then we add the crispy garlic chili oil sauce that we used to make poke with,” Gilbert says. “It’s super addictive; I’ve been working on it for a long time.

“When I wrote the menu to open dinner at Monarch Poke — which we never pulled off — it was on the menu there,” he adds. “I was experimenting with it there, and it just never got to the table. So it’s like a two-year-in-the-making situation that’s never happened, but it’s like a three-recipe variation to make one (of these).”

Other menu items include the Tavern burger ($11), lilikoʻi barbecue kalua pork sandwich ($15) and the mahi mahi sandwich (market price). Customers can make their sandwich a combo by adding shoestring French fries or a green salad (additional $3.50). Gilbert says they’re especially proud of the Italian meatball sub ($18) and the Philly special ($18). Both are inspired by his business partner, Chris Natale.

“I’m from Philly originally, but I’ve been here for more than 31 years,” Natale says. “I’ve had people ask me for years, ‘What makes a Philly cheesesteak so good?’ To tell you the truth, 

a lot of it is the roll; 70% is the roll. There’s something about East Coast bread — the water makes really good bread; that’s what makes a good sandwich."

When looking for a good Philly cheesesteak, Natale adds that the “diced onions gotta be in there already; you shouldn’t have to ask for it” and that the cheese should be “incorporated with the meats as it’s cooked, not just put on top.”

Speaking of cheese, the business special orders Cooper Sharp Cheese from Philadelphia, along with bread from New York, to make this sandwich.

“The Cooper Sharp cheese is a thing back in Philly,” Natale says. “It has a nice bite to it; it’s really good. It’s (the bread) a good Italian roll and it helps to make the sandwich that much better.”

The meatball sub features a combination of recipes, but also pays homage to Natale’s brief gig selling meatballs during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Everything was shut down, and one of my friends started selling margaritas,” he remembers. “He said, ‘You should sell something.’ I am Italian; I started selling meatballs by the dozen with my homemade sauce. It became a little business for a minute there; I stopped and people still ask me, ‘Are you doing more meatballs?’ A meatball sub is hard to find on this island.”

Gilbert encourages customers to save room for desserts like the housemade ube cheesecake with coconut cream sauce ($9) — which was featured at Plantation Tavern and Monarch Poke — banana cream pie, served with sliced bananas and crème anglaise ($7) and chocolate dobash cake with a raspberry coulis ($12).

The banana cream pie pays homage to one of the beloved desserts at former ‘Ewa plantation restaurant Tenney Tavern, according to Gilbert.

“It burned down and never reopened,” he says. “But there a lot of people in this community that still remember it. It had very specific things — it had a juke box; it was known for its veal cutlet, Green River drink and their pies. They specifically had a banana cream pie; we threw a pie back (on the menu) for that.”

In the coming months, customers can look forward to weekend brunch — before football season starts, Gilbert says — and dinner service. The eatery also offers catering and features a space for weddings, according to Gilbert, who says the eatery has around 135 seats.

“We’re going to be open for dinner, but we’re going to let the staff settle, learn the lunch menu and get a groove,” he says. “We have a bunch of catering for events coming up for graduations.

“The kitchen’s huge here; we have way more ability to do more,” he adds.

The eatery is owned by chef Adam Gilbert, previously of Monarch Poke and Plantation Tavern, and business partner Chris Natale. The eatery strives to offer local-style dishes — including its signature poke nachos — at affordable prices, and also features a grab-and-go section for golfers.
