Mauna Kea is the only possible site for the controversial Thirty Meter Telescope, after an alternate site in the Canary Islands has reportedly been nixed.

, sources within Spain’s Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities confirmed that the TMT International Observatory has rejected a bid by the Spanish government to have the long-planned telescope built on the island of La Palma in the Canary Islands.

The news comes little more than a month after TMT itself 

 that Spain had proposed a “financial framework” to build the observatory on La Palma, a proposal involving multiple Spanish government agencies and the European Investment Bank. That proposed framework 

 up to €1 billion (about $1.1 billion) for the project. 

, the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities announced the rejection on Friday, but the reasons for that rejection were not publicly disclosed.

While Mauna Kea has always been the primary site planned for TMT, La Palma had been proposed as a potential alternative. The island hosts several telescopes at its Roque de los Muchachos Observatory, as its height and equatorial position makes it well-suited for astronomy in the same way that Mauna Kea is.

 of TMT by the National Science Foundation noted that the La Palma contingency was not developed to the same level of detail as the Mauna Kea plan. 

With La Palma seemingly out of the picture, TMT’s only remaining potential site is, once again, Mauna Kea. 

But the future of the project remains murky. In 2024, the NSF named both TMT and the Giant Magellan Telescope in Chile as potential linchpins of a “U.S. Extremely Large Telescope” project, but also that only one could feasibly be funded, putting the two telescopes in competition with each other. 

 a budget request that mentioned that it was no longer considering TMT for the Extremely Large Telescope project, wiping about $1.6 billion in federal funding off the table for TMT.

 earlier this year stipulating that NSF continue to consider both TMT and the Giant Magellan Telescope through its final review process, although no funding for either project was guaranteed in that bill. 

Meanwhile, Gov. Josh Green and the state’s Congressional delegation have 

 TMT to consider building the observatory in the footprint of a previously existing telescope on Mauna Kea, rather than on untouched summit land. TMT project manager Fengchuan Liu told the Mauna Kea Stewardship and Oversight Authority in April that this could be feasible.

Diamond Head Market & Grill launched its new shave ice concept earlier this month, according to chef Kelvin Ro. The artisan shave ice stand is on the corner of Monsarrat and Campbell Avenues.

Ro explains that the business actually had shave ice in that very corner 20 years ago.

“We had a coffee bar with shave ice about 20 years ago,” he says, noting that when a coffee shop opened across the street from the business, Diamond Head Market closed its coffee bar.

“This shave ice machine is old; it’s a really expensive machine from Japan,” he adds. “The ice is really fine and fluffy. There seems to be a resurgence of shave ice now, but we’ve had the machine for so long. I decided to just try it (to do shave ice).”

Prior to the corner spot becoming a shave ice stand, it was used as a storage space for the business. As a chef, though, Ro knew he had to bring a unique spin to his shave ice concept. He explains the signature desserts feature housemade fruit coulis, slow-simmered compotes and premium ice cream, along with distinctive flavors inspired by some of the market’s signature creations.

The business offers classic flavors — ranging from blue vanilla and blueberry to lychee and mango — which are more “traditional;” guests can choose from keiki ($7) or regular ($9) sizes. Customers can choose up to three flavors per dessert.

Meanwhile, the signature desserts ($12-$15) feature the business’s specialty flavors and are more elaborate. Instead of shave ice bowls, the signature creations are served in trays.

“I didn’t want it (the shave ice) to be too high for several reasons,” Ro explains. “The ice is so fine; it’ll melt so fast. I wanted it more wide so we could put in all the ingredients without putting it all on one mound.”

“I do it in two steps because I don’t want the top to be too fluffy,” he says. “I want flavor on the bottom half, too. I put the toppings on twice.”

Reminiscent of the market’s signature cake, the lemon crunch shave ice ($12) features lemon curd, toffee crunch, lemon icing and vanilla ice cream.

“We have the lemon curd from the lemon crunch cake; we made it into a creamier sauce so it’s pourable,” Ro says. “The lemon syrup is actually lemon icing.”

He explains the tart lemon curd balances the subtly sweet icing, while the toffee crunch adds texture.

Meanwhile, the strawberry daifuku ($15) — inspired by the popular Japanese dessert — includes strawberry compote, azuki beans, housemade butter mochi and vanilla ice cream.

“We’re making our own mochi,” he says. “All the components for daifuku — mochi, azuki beans — are already kind of in a shave ice. You’re getting so many textures and components in that, and it tastes really good.

“Instead of putting the mochi and ice cream on the bottom, I’m deconstructing it,” he adds, noting that the ice cream and butter mochi are on top of the shave ice.”

The blueberry cream cheese crush ($12) comprises blueberry compote, cream cheese drizzle and vanilla ice cream. Ro says Hawaiian Da Kine ($12) — haupia cream, pineapple compote and vanilla ice cream — is his personal favorite, but he anticipates the Pīkake (jasmine) flavor ($15) will be the signature dessert.

“There’s a story behind it,” he says, explaining that the flavor features pīkake syrup made from flowers from Diamond Head Market & Grill’s Maunalua farm. “We had the opportunity of having pīkake fields when we acquired the farm about four years ago. We started making lei — we became more than farm to table — and we did not want to discard them (the extra flowers).”

“There are going to be times when the flower is not picked, and it’s still so beautiful; I didn’t want to waste it, so I turned it into a syrup,” he says. “I used pīkake syrup in the past for other things like sorbet, or for intermezzo for a finer dinner.

“When they eat the sorbet, people can’t believe that they’re actually smelling pīkake,” he adds. “I decided to take the concept of the syrup with the sorbet, and do it for shave ice.”

Ro says he will let the pīkake bloom, and he worked with farmers to create the jasmine syrup.

“The oils are stronger if you let it naturally come out in the sun,” he says. “My farmer made the pīkake syrup with me. We’re taking it and adding value to a farm product.”

The pīkake dessert is topped with fresh fruit, including strawberries, blueberries and pineapple. Ro notes the jasmine is more of an essence, much like lavender or rose.

“When you taste it, you’re going to see what I mean,” he says. “Hopefully, I’ll get more stuff directly from the farm (to make syrups), because we have guavas, mangoes, coconuts and bananas.

“I wanted to do a bananas foster (flavor) with the ice cream, but we had too many ideas,” he chuckles. “I also wanted to do a Filipino halo halo (flavor); I wanted to do sticky rice and mango, tapioca and mango with ice cream.”

The shave ice stand is more than just another dessert option to Ro. He explains the shave ice concept is another outlet “to show the next generation the viability of farm to table.”

“It’s also about being unique and creating something out of the box,” he says. “Hopefully, we can use this and the farm as a training ground for the next generation. That’s my personal goal.

“We’re considered a one-stop shop,” he adds. “You can get your cake, lei, ice cream and food, and while you’re waiting for everything, you can order shave ice. In a little space like this, we have a bakery, the market, the grill, and now this.”

Scores of people, students and state and county officials gathered in the Hawai‘i State Capitol Friday to commemorate former Gov. George Ariyoshi.

Ariyoshi, the longest-serving governor in state history and the first Asian-American elected governor in the United States, 

 April 19 at the age of 100. His casket, draped in a U.S. flag, was laid in state at the state Capitol Friday, where it will remain until noon Saturday.

At the public visitation on Friday, a procession of people including Gov. Josh Green paid their respects to Ariyoshi and his family, while students from McKinley High School — his alma mater — other schools performed songs, dances and recitations in his honor.

McKinley High School principal Ron Okamura said Ariyoshi’s legacy looms large both at the school itself and in his own career. When Ariyoshi was first campaigning for governor in 1974, Okamura said the gubernatorial candidate emphasized the word “integrity,” which Okamura defined as: “What you say, is what you do.”

Okamura added that Ariyoshi was a fan of dancing the jitterbug, and presented McKinley students swing dancing to a performance by the McKinley High School Jazz Band.

Other dignitaries in attendance included Hawai‘i County Mayor Kimo Alameda, who told Aloha State Daily the former governor was a model for his own leadership.

“He did a lot of connecting,” Alameda said. “He was good with building relationships, and that’s something I try to do.”

Alameda added that Ariyoshi’s longevity was also something he aspires to; previous Hawai‘i County mayors, including his immediate predecessors Mitch Roth and Harry Kim, had heart attacks in office, which led Alameda to worry about his own health.

“But [Ariyoshi] lived to 100, so he had to have done something right,” Alameda said.

Others agreed with Ariyoshi’s ability to build relationships. Ken Takemoto said Ariyoshi was “the perfect bridge between Hawaiian and Japanese culture.

“He was a transition from older Japanese cultural values into modern Hawai‘i,” Takemoto continued. “But without discarding them.”

Takemoto, himself a McKinley graduate, said he never knew Ariyoshi personally — although Ariyoshi, then a Hawai‘i State Senator, delivered the commencement address at Takemoto’s graduation in 1966, Takemoto said ruefully that he didn’t remember a word of it. But, he said Ariyoshi was a perennial role model for the Japanese community in Hawai‘i, lauded for leading the state through “a transformative period” in the state’s history.

Ariyoshi is survived by his wife, Jean Ariyoshi, daughter Lynn and sons Ryozo and Donn.

After Ariyoshi’s lie in state ends Saturday, there will be a public visitation at Kawaiaha‘o Church from 2-4 p.m., followed by a celebration of life from 4-5 p.m. Public seating will be available only on a first-come, first-served basis.

Ariyoshi will be buried Monday at the National Memorial Center of the Pacific in a private service for immediate family only.

Running in a straight line, slot receiver Tama Uiliata dove for Alejado's pass and moved the chains for a first down. As he got up, he briefly covered his face with his hands before moving on to the next play.

, the dagger in a 29-19 victory for the Rainbow Warriors on Sept. 12. 

As the 'Bows continue to await the return of star receiver Pofele Ashlock, Uiliata has emerged as one of Alejado's top targets in the meantime. Through three games, he's hauled in a team-high 18 receptions for 169 yards and a touchdown. Each time Uiliata makes a big play, such as the crucial catch against New Mexico State, he resorts to the same celebration. 

"It's just peekaboo. I play peekaboo with my daughters," 

Uiliata recently explained to Aloha State Daily. His two daughters, Zaylani and Xaydria, are aged 1 and 2. "

It's a celebration I kind of came up with just because I always love my daughters and just having that in the back of my head while I'm playing, that's who I play for, really."

An all-around star player for Waipahu, Uiliata racked up 28 touchdowns as a senior for the Marauders in 2022, lining up at quarterback, receiver and running back. As a defensive back, he had four interceptions, including one for a touchdown. 

Overlooked by other FBS schools during the recruiting process, Hawai‘i was the only offer for the 5-foot-11 Uiliata. He grayshirted before arriving to campus, then redshirted the 2024 season. As a redshirt freshman in 2025, he caught 28 passes for 231 yards and also won the starting punt returner job, returning 12 punts for 77 yards. 

The 2026 season has been Uiliata's breakout year thus far, earning one of two starting nods at slot receiver for the team's season opener at Stanford alongside Blaze Kamoku. Uiliata's first collegiate touchdown came in the fourth quarter of the opener, hauling in an 11-yard pass from Alejado. 

In the 2026 season, Uiliata and Nebraska offensive lineman Preston Taumua are the only Waipahu High School graduates on FBS rosters, a fact Uiliata doesn't take lightly.

"I seen the good side and the bad side of Waipahu" Uiliata says. "So, kind of just showing the young generation that there's other ways to make it and just showing love to my city and showing love to the boys."

In considering Uiliata's versatility, particularly his highlight tape as a Waipahu quarterback, UH coaches understand they have a unique weapon. It's why assistant offensive line coach Winterhawk Leighton is wont to scheming up plays utilizing Uiliata, including the touchdown pass he threw to Abreu. Another instance was a 

 in which Uiliata reached the end zone on a reverse.

"He's a ballplayer," Leighton says of Uiliata. "You can put him in the backfield, at receiver, at quarterback. The guy's special, and there's not a lot of football players like Tama in college football. He can just be an athlete out there and affect a football game in multiple ways. He's one of a kind."

Following a bye week, the Rainbow Warriors are preparing for a Sept. 26 contest at rival Wyoming in the annual battle for the Paniolo Trophy. Come game time, the 'Bows will welcome as many peekaboos as Uiliata can accumulate. 

"It's great," Uiliata said of fatherhood and raising his family with his high school sweetheart, Serenity. "At first it was kind of like pressure, feeling like you have so much on your shoulders just because you have to provide for not only yourself for two other kids, but these coaches helped me a lot. Just making everything simple and just coming back to the basics, staying where my feet are, not only on the field."

 in Civil Beat this week about the tune of “Hawaiʻi Ponoʻī.” He learned that the melody served the British and the Germans, and perhaps the French, before it reached Honolulu. He felt some angst about it.

I can’t share the angst. A tune is like a coin. It passes through many hands and is no worse for the trip.

Words are different. Anthem lyrics are where a nation says what it means, and the words of "Hawaiʻi Ponoʻī" pushed out other words. Olin mentions the older anthem twice and moves on. But it’s worth more than a moment. The king’s sister wrote it, and it is the better song.

On Feb. 20, 1875, King Kalākaua stood in Kawaiahaʻo Church, five days home from a trip to America. His 

 was read in Hawaiian and in English. He told his people that idleness had thinned the nation since the days of Kamehameha. The cure, he said, was “material and social progress.” He wanted enough of it that the powerful governments then friendly to Hawaiʻi would think the kingdom worth keeping. The king placed the nation’s safety in its own industry and in the favor of stronger nations.

Then the choir rose and sang the national song, written by Princess Liliʻuokalani nine years before. It places the nation’s safety in the care of God.

Liliʻuokalani wrote the song in 1866 because Kamehameha V wanted a national air of Hawaiʻi’s own in place of “God Save the Queen.” Her 

 is a prayer to the Almighty Father. The most powerful man in the Islands appears in his own anthem as someone who needs looking after.

The English translation sings well, though it hides some of what the Hawaiian chorus says.

We recognize these words from our state motto: 

, commonly translated as “the life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness.”

That motto was spoken by Kamehameha III in 1843 after the Paulet affair. But Liliʻuokalani turns it from a declaration into a petition.

, in thy enduring righteousness. May the life of the land endure through thy everlasting righteousness. The motto never says whose righteousness it means, but Liliʻuokalani’s chorus does.

Liliʻuokalani’s anthem looks to God for every blessing on the nation. The first constitution, in 1840, said the same in prose: “God must be our aid, for it is His province alone to give perfect protection and prosperity.”

By the time she wrote, that sentence was gone from the law. The constitutions of 1852 and 1864 spoke of a God who gives men their rights and may be freely worshipped. That is good law, but it is not a confession. So for 10 years Liliʻuokalani’s anthem carried the faith that the constitution had dropped. At the opening of a legislature or on the birthday of a king, the kingdom stood and told God that its hope was all in him. It was the last place where the nation still said so with one voice.

Kalākaua wrote his own words in 1874. They were first sung at Kawaiahaʻo on his birthday, the day before he sailed for America. The tune was one the royal bandmaster had arranged two years earlier as a hymn to Kamehameha. For more than a year the kingdom had two songs. In 1876 the king kept 

The reasons for Kalākaua invoking Kamehameha are not hard to find. The legislature had elected him over a beloved queen, and a riot followed. He was not of Kamehameha’s line, and everyone knew it.

A shaky throne wants a song that ties it to something solid, and Kalākaua reached for the great king. But Kamehameha died before the first missionaries landed. He kept the kapu to the end, with Puʻukoholā heiau dedicated with human sacrifice. Kamehameha was a great king, but he is an odd father for a Christian nation to sing to.

Kalākaua’s mele is a different creed from his sister’s. Her song speaks to God about the king. His speaks to the people about the king, and God is not addressed at all. Hers gives the name Father to the Almighty, and his gives it to Kamehameha. She asks for peace from God. The only defense his song names is the spear. The psalmist cautioned against relying on arms for defense: “Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the Lord our God.”

With the old song went the last public words that rested the nation on God. They went at the king’s whim, in favor of his own verses. 

But spears could not defend that king. Eleven years later he signed a constitution at the point of other men’s bayonets. Six years after that the throne fell, and no spear was strong enough to defend it. His sister, a prisoner in her own palace, wrote another hymn, the “Queen’s Prayer.” She asked again for peace from God.

Hawaiʻi Ponoʻī is still sung at ball games and graduations, and with special feeling at sovereignty rallies. Most of us learned it before we could ask what its lyrics said, or what they replaced.

But “He Mele Lāhui Hawaiʻi” is the better song, and Liliʻuokalani’s anthem is still worth hearing.

A Bishop Street lawyer once invited me to present a Broker Opinion of Value to a local Hawaiʻi family at the Pacific Club. I delivered Sales Comparables and Income Approach analyses for a warehouse and a shopping mall.

After my BOV presentation, several siblings asked valuation questions — in plain English: "What are the properties worth?" I gave out some numbers.

Then the patriarch, an elderly Chinese man with a cane, smiled and said: "

Under the ornate table, the lawyer kicked me on my shin.

I left frustrated. I had come prepared to talk about value. The patriarch was talking about something else.

It took me years to understand that I had been looking at the problem through the wrong lens.

The issue was not simply what the properties were worth. It was how a family manages wealth when much of that wealth is tied up in real estate — and how that wealth can be managed in a three-generation family.

That is becoming an increasingly important question for Hawaiʻi.

For generations, local families accumulated wealth differently from many families on the Mainland. Their balance sheets often contain land, apartment buildings, commercial properties, hotels, agricultural property, long-term leases, and family businesses rather than primarily stocks and bonds.

Many of those assets have appreciated enormously.

But appreciation creates a new challenge: Wealth becomes more valuable, more complicated, and harder for one person to manage.

The question is no longer simply, "What do we own?"

Who is making the decisions about what we own?

This is where the family office concept becomes relevant.

The idea is not new. Wealthy families in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East have used various forms of family offices for generations. What is new in Hawaiʻi is the recognition that some local families are already performing family-office functions without necessarily calling themselves a family office.

A family may have an attorney, CPA, banker, investment advisor, property manager, and real estate broker. Each may be excellent at what they do.

But who is looking at the entire picture?

Who understands the family's real estate portfolio, liquidity, taxes, insurance, debt, estate structure, investment objectives, and succession plans — and helps the family make decisions that connect all of those pieces?

That is one of the fundamental roles of a “family office.”

I saw this firsthand when I lectured at an Ivy League executive program on family offices. The attendees included representatives of major European, Asian, and Middle Eastern fortunes.

One lesson was striking: Sophisticated family offices are not simply investment offices. They coordinate investments, taxes, legal structures, risk, philanthropy and, most importantly, family decision-making.

One Dubai family, with assets larger than Bank of Hawaiʻi, deliberately brought outsiders into the organization as checks and balances: a British executive as COO, a Lebanese lawyer, and an American banker.

Another family kept investment decisions entirely within the family, with two daughters working alongside the patriarch.

Different structures. Different cultures. Similar questions.

Who decides? Who advises? Who has authority? And who is being prepared to take over?

Those questions can become especially difficult when the wealth consists of real estate.

I once advised a Maui family whose siblings were geographically dispersed. Some believed they did the heavy lifting managing the family's retail properties. A Mainland sibling argued that the family should sell the Hawaiʻi properties, conduct 1031 exchanges, and pursue higher returns elsewhere.

The disagreement was not simply about real estate.

Who had the authority to propose a new strategy? Who would evaluate the replacement investments? How would the family decide whether maximizing financial return was actually its objective?

These questions rarely appear on a property valuation.

There is an old saying in family wealth circles: "Shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves in three generations."

The first generation creates the wealth. The second manages it. By the third, the connection between the family and the source of the wealth can weaken.

For Hawaiʻi families, succession can be particularly complicated because the inheritance may consist of real estate that require active management.

A founder, like the patriarch with the cane, may know every tenant, every lease, every parcel, and every banker.

That does not mean the next generation is incapable of managing the wealth. It means the family needs a system for transferring knowledge, responsibility, and decision-making authority, not simply assets.

That system does not necessarily require a large staff or a Bishop Street office. A family might establish a single-family office. It might use a multi-family office. Or it might appoint one trusted executive or advisor to coordinate a network of attorneys, CPAs, bankers, investment managers, and real estate professionals.

There is no single formula. What matters is that the family has a structure.

That structure should answer some basic questions:

What do we owe, and what risks do we face?

What is the family's investment strategy?

For Hawaiʻi, this may represent a new stage in the evolution of family wealth.

The traditional model was simple and effective: acquire property, maintain it, generate income, and pass it to the next generation.

But the environment has changed. Property values are higher. Ownership structures are more complicated. Insurance, operating, and construction costs have risen. Family members increasingly live thousands of miles apart. And younger generations may have vastly different ideas about risk, liquidity, and investment.

The challenge is no longer simply preserving the family's assets.

That is the real meaning of family wealth stewardship.

A family needs to become intentional about how decisions are made, how knowledge is transferred and how the next generation is prepared – it is beyond holding the land, it is about building the institution around it.
