In its third elimination game in less than a week, the University of Hawai‘i baseball team stayed alive with a 16-4 rout over host Cal State Fullerton on Friday night. The Rainbow Warriors (35-20) move on to Saturday, while Cal State Fullerton's season ends at 29-27.

Hawai‘i will take on Cal Poly in another elimination game at noon HST. The winner of that game would have to defeat top-seeded UC Irvine twice to win the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. 

, led 5-2 through six innings on Friday, but erupted for 11 runs in the final three innings. Jordan Donahue hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning, while Kamana Nahaku added a solo shot in the next at-bat. 

"We're playing free and easy," Hawai‘i head coach Rich Hill said after the game. "We're a scary team to deal with right now."

In all, the 'Bows totaled 19 hits. On the mound, Sebastian Gonzalez got the start and held the Titans to one run in four innings, while Cory Ronan got the win after recording four outs. From there, All-Big West closer Isaiah Magdaleno did the rest of the pitching, striking out three in 3.2 innings of work. 

"Not a lot of adjectives that can describe our performance in every facet today," Hill said. "I thought it all started with (Gonzalez). He's a fiery competitor and handed it off to Cory. He was a little tired but was able to throw the breaking ball for a strike and get us to the situation where our MVP, Magdaleno, took control. 

"On the bases, I thought we did a great job, our dugout was electric and offensively, that's 19 hits, 16 runs, home runs, clutch hitting, two-out hitting, just an overall great performance."

Despite the team's large 16-4 lead in the ninth inning, Hill decided not to conserve Magdaleno, who finished with a total of 59 pitches. That workload does not put Magdaleno's availability for Saturday in doubt, according to Hill. 

"We'll see how he feels tomorrow," Hill said of Magdaleno. "I'm sure he'll want the ball at some point."

In Friday's previous Big West tournament game, UC Irvine defeated Cal Poly 15-3 via the run rule in seven innings, setting up Saturday's elimination game between the Rainbow Warriors and Mustangs.

"The message is not to make it too big," Donahue said. "We all know what needs to get done but ultimately slowing it down and taking it pitch by pitch, not getting caught up in the bigger picture."

Why did the pedestrian cross the road? Because a newly opened bridge in Kaka‘ako makes it easier and safer to do so.

The $17.8 million elevated walkway, located on Ala Moana Boulevard between Ward Avenue and Kamake‘e Street, opened Thursday, a little more than three years after 

It spans six lanes of traffic, more easily and safely connecting Kaka‘ako to Ala Moana Beach Park and Kewalo Basin, the state Department of Transportation said in a May 22 announcement.

When construction started in May 2022, the DOT gave an estimated completion date of October 2023.

A department spokesperson told Aloha State Daily in an email Friday that unforeseen site conditions, mainly on the makai side of the street, led to a revised completion schedule.

These challenges included a communications line that was in a different location from as-built plans and reinforcing an old box culvert not in initial plans, and others, they said. A concrete shortage in 2022 also affected the time frame.

DOT Director Ed Sniffen said in the announcement Thursday that the bridge has been "eagerly anticipated by many."

"Our partners in this project have done a fantastic job of building a walkway that will not only serve as a pedestrian and bike safety measure but as an aesthetic addition to the corridor."

The spokesperson said the pedestrian bridge bridge reduces the potential of "vehicle-pedestrian conflict" for those crossing the busy roadway to reach Ala Moana Beach Park and Kewalo Basin

"One of HDOT's goals recently has been to improve pedestrian safety, especially on roads more than six lanes wide," the spokesperson said, noting that a pedestrian bridge can reduce the number of people using the street crosswalks and therefore the potential for vehicle-pedestrian collisions.

That stretch of Ala Moana Boulevard sees an average of about 49,000 vehicles per day, according to traffic counts from the DOT, which can be

According to the DOT, the project was funded through the U.S. Department of Transportation's Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development, or BUILD, discretionary grant program and state highway funds — 80% of which was covered by federal funding and 20%, or about $4 million, was covered by the state — with other contributions from Victoria Ward Limited for land, design and environmental fees.

The bridge connects to Ward Village's Victoria Ward Park Makai, which 

. It's the first phase of the park named in honor of Victoria Ward, born in 1846. Ward Village is Howard Hughes' 60-acre master-planned community located between Downtown Honolulu and Waikīkī.

"Creating a walkable, connected neighborhood is central to our vision for Ward Village, which is why the new elevated walkway is such a meaningful addition," Ward Village said in a statement emailed to Aloha State Daily Friday. "In partnership with the state DOT and the Federal Highway Administration, the project enhances safe, direct access from mauka to makai, linking residents and visitors to nearby parks, open spaces and the waterfront. We look forward to expanding the neighborhood experience with upcoming improvements to Victoria Ward Park and other public spaces next year."

As a kid, Mark Ellis saw the Hōkūleʻa, a double-hulled voyaging canoe. It sparked his imagination and inspired him to build a mini version of the vessel as a school project. Eventually, he joined the Polynesian Voyaging Society, which operates the Hōkūleʻa.

Today, he is training the next generation of navigators aboard the Iosepa, a traditional double-hulled sailing canoe, which sets out on a 31-day voyage of the Hawaiian islands on Saturday, May 24.

Ellis grew up “in the water” and “on the water,” he told Aloha State Daily. When he was seven years old, he saw 

coming home from a voyage to Tahiti and told his parents he wanted to sail on that vessel.

“That ʻboat’ is what I was called it, but now I know it's a canoe,” Ellis said. “Everything I did in my class projects was always to do with Hōkūleʻa and voyaging.”

 Kāne’s books and Ellis used to look through the pictures, he said. At around nine years old, his teacher asked students to make boats as part of studying density. Ellis decided to create a mini version of the Hōkūleʻa.

He asked his parents to take him to see the double-hulled voyaging canoe and remembers the crew explaining things.

Eventually, he started volunteering for dry dock work with the Polynesian Voyaging Society, which operates the Hōkūleʻa and its sister vessel, Hikianalia. The duo are named after sister stars that “break the horizon together at the latitude of the Hawaiian islands,” according to website for PVS.

“And then, it wasn't until after college that I was invited to sail on Hōkūleʻa,” he said. “And after that, I just started constantly sailing.”

Weather permitting, Iosepa’s voyage includes landings at Lāʻie, Pōkaʻī Bay, Haleʻiwa and Mauliola on Oʻahu; Lahaina on Maui, and Kaunakakai on Molokaʻi. Iosepa was built in 2001. It was designed as a working classroom to teach navigation and seamanship, as well as Hawaiian values, according to representatives of the Polynesian Cultural Center, which is where the canoe is housed when it is not on the water.

Ellis worked his way through the ranks as a crew member and watch captain.

“It was never my desire to become a captain,” he said. “It was just at one point that they said, ʻHey, we need help. Can you be a captain?’ ”

 has been part of legs of voyages across the world, including to California and the Galapagos Islands as well as legs from New York to Virginia, Florida to Virginia and Samoa to Aotearoa, according to the PVS website.

across the Pacific, according to the website for PVS. On May 30, the Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia are scheduled to depart Hilo for French Polynesia to resume the Moananuiākea Voyage, which is a four-year circumnavigation of the Pacific Ocean.

At any time, the crew for Iosepa is usually 12 to 16 people, Ellis said. But different people will be part of the crew for each leg of the voyage. The crew will likely consist of about 70 or more people over the entire voyage, he said.   

“I’m grateful for my family for supporting me and allowing me to follow my dream and my passion,” he said. “And now we’re on Iosepa and we’re training the next generation and getting them all excited.”

A collection of environmental organizations sued the Trump administration this week to protect the Pacific Islands Heritage Marine National Monument from commercial fishing.

In April, President Donald Trump issued a 

 titled “Unleashing American Commercial Fishing in the Pacific,” declaring that commercial fishing shall be permitted by U.S. vessels within most waters of the Marine National Monument (formerly called the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument), a series of protected waters surrounding Wake Island, Johnson Atoll, Jarvis Island and other islands south and west of Hawai‘i.

Collectively, the PIHMNM covers about 490,000 square miles of ocean. Trump’s proclamation would open the vast majority of that area to fishing, save for the area within 50 nautical miles of each of the islands within the Monument.

California organization Earthjustice filed a 

 on Thursday on behalf of Hawai‘i groups Kāpa‘a, the Conservation Council for Hawai‘i and the Center for Biological Diversity. The lawsuit names as defendants Trump, Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, acting administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Laura Grimm, NOAA Fisheries administrator Eugenio Piñero, and Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum.

David Henkin, Deputy Managing Attorney for Earthjustice’s Mid-Pacific office, told Aloha State Daily that Trump’s proclamation has no legal standing.

In 2009, Henkin explained, then-president George W. Bush established the PIHMNM via the powers established in the 

 (or the Act for the Preservation of American Activities), which allows for legal protection of cultural and natural resources. Then-president Barack Obama expanded the PIHMNM in 2014 using the same powers.

Trump also purported to use the Antiquities Act in his April proclamation, but Henkin said that isn’t legally possible.

“The Antiquities Act is a one-way ratchet,” Henkin said. “It can create, but it can’t destroy.”

Specifically, the lawsuit argues, the Antiquities act authorizes the president to designate national monuments or reserve areas for protection, but does not authorize the president to undo those actions.

Any effort to remove legal protections from federal land would have to go through Congress, Henkin said, and can’t be unilaterally enacted with a single stroke of the president’s pen.

Furthermore, Henkin said, the U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service published on April 25 

 stating that, pursuant to Trump’s proclamation, commercial fishing is no longer prohibited in certain areas of the Monument.

This, Henkin said, is also illegal, violating the 

, which requires the NMFS to follow a standard public comment rulemaking process before making any fishery management changes.

The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court, requests that the court declare that the proclamation exceeds the scope of his authority and issue injunctive relief barring the implementation of the proclamation.

Beyond the legal questions, Henkin said Trump’s justifications for the proclamation don’t hold up.

“As a result of the prohibitions on commercial fishing, American fishing fleets have lost access to nearly half of the United States’ Exclusive Economic Zone in the Pacific Islands,” the proclamation reads. “This has driven American fishermen to fish further offshore in international waters to compete against poorly regulated and highly subsidized foreign fleets.”

But Henkin said Monument waters were not heavily fished even before 2009, and that commercial fishers are easily able to reach federally mandated take limits very quickly each year.

“We’ve got to wonder why Trump though it was important to remove these protections,” Henkin said. “There have been economic studies done that show that, when you protect an area, abundance overflows.”

Pelagic tuna, which Henkin said would be the primary fish sought in Monument waters, are not bound by the invisible boundaries of the Monument. In protected waters, Henkin said, tuna populations build and expand outward beyond those boundaries, where fishers can freely take them.

“It’s just not necessary,” Henkin said. “It reflects a poor understanding of the ecosystem.”

At the same time, tuna are not the only fish within the Monument. Those waters are home to a wide variety of sealife, including endangered leatherback sea turtles, whose populations could be irrevocably impacted by commercial fishing: “If you let a bull into a china shop even just once in a while, it has a devastating impact,” Henkin said.

In April, the Hawai‘i Longline Association published 

 in Aloha State Daily in support of the proclamation, with executive director Eric Kingma writing that Hawai‘i's fishers have to compete with nationally subsidized foreign fishing fleets in international waters, while the United Nations has implemented further regulations on protected waters since the Monument was established.

"Hawai‘i residents consume seafood at twice the national average. Hawai‘i residents should support actions that support locally produced seafood — the alternative is foreign imported, low quality ‘ahi that is unregulated and unmonitored, bad for consumers and the environment," Kingma wrote.

Trump’s proclamation claims that existing conservation laws make up sufficient protection for endangered sea life within the Monument.

An All-ILH second team selection at Maryknoll, Quinn was ready to walk away from the game, content with being a good high school ballplayer that chose not to take the journey any further.  

Quinn was scheduled to compete at a showcase event at Hans L'Orange Field but was determined to ditch. 

"I remember vividly calling my father and saying, 'Hey, Dad, I'm good.' But my dad was like, 'It's $180, just go,'" Quinn recently recalled to Aloha State Daily.

Quinn reluctantly showed up to the field, a decision that extended his baseball career by six years, the last two as a starter at the University of Utah. 

When Quinn halfheartedly showed up to Hans L'Orange Field with his catcher's gear and the rest of his equipment, perhaps he played with the freedom of having nothing to lose. His 60-yard dash time was officially clocked at 6.8 seconds, while his catcher pop time registered well under two seconds, both elite metrics for a high schooler hoping to play college ball. 

Aided by the nudging of future teammate Jordan Hara, Quinn decided to go to the only college that offered him a spot on the team: Pacific University, an NCAA Division III school in Forest Grove, Ore. that also features the 

largest population of students from Hawai‘i for a school located outside the state

"I got a chance," Quinn said. "I kind of went in there knowing that I was going to be a backup catcher at best."

Pacific's starting catcher in 2019, Jacob Igawa, leveled up to Division II Hawai‘i-Hilo before eventually becoming a two-year starter at Hawai‘i. Quinn earned immediate playing time, hitting .413 with two home runs as a freshman in 2020. After his season was cut short due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Quinn stayed home in Mililani for the remainder of the year. It was during that period that he bulked up by eating more often and working out frequently at a friend's house nearby, going from "140 soaking wet to 175 pounds."

The 5-foot-9 Quinn continued to produce for the rest of his Pacific career, hitting .412 in 2023 with a total of 20 home runs. In between college seasons, he got to test his ability in summer ball, where he swung a wooden bat and competed against Division I players. In 2022, he was 

 for the Corvallis Knights of the West Coast League. 

Making the jump from Pacific to Division I baseball is rare but not unprecedented. Quinn noted that a former teammate of his in Chase Anderson was the first to go from Pacific to Utah, while Leilehua alumnus Ty Yukumoto made the jump from Pacific to Gonzaga in 2025, hitting .291 in 50 starts.

At the end of the 2023 season, Quinn played four seasons at Pacific but still had two more years of collegiate eligibility. He initially committed to Portland in the transfer portal but the paperwork never arrived. Instead, it was former Hawai‘i assistant coach and current Utah assistant Mike Brown that convinced Quinn to sign with the Utes. 

Quinn admits there was an adjustment to Division I ball. All the skills pitchers possessed in Division III were amplified at the DI level. 

"It became a lot of harder, more spin on their pitches, stuff like that," Quinn said. "I struggled basically the first half of the year, and so the stats aren't great for that first year at Utah, but it was a learning experience for sure. We had to come up with different plans in order to be successful at the Division I level."

Quinn started 27 games at third base and 14 at catcher for the Utes in 2024, hitting .214. His tore his ACL after hitting his fourth home run of the year against Oregon. 

"I came in for the celebration, jumped up and I tore my ACL, my meniscus," Quinn recalled. "They were basically like, alright, if we get surgery soon, we can get you ready to go for this year."

Quinn's hitting numbers improved across the board in 2025, hitting .316 with five home runs in 50 games. He was used as a utility player, starting 25 games at first base, five at third and 17 at designated hitter. 

The Utes went 21-29 overall and 8-22 in Big 12 Conference play, their season ending last week.

"It's just been a blast. Obviously, there's been some some good and some bad," Quinn said of his time at Utah, where he majored in applied positive psychology as a graduate student. "(Playing for a Power Four school) is about as glamorous as you can imagine and you get a bunch of free stuff which is nice, and managers help clean up. That wasn't a thing at Division III, but it's a nice life. 

"Obviously there's a lot of work that's involved. You have to continually improve each and every day, and the game doesn't change. It's so unbelievable how similar the game is, but yet how different it is at the same time. It's all 90 feet (between bases)."

For someone who was ready to leave the game behind, six years of college ball was not on Quinn's radar at first. When asked about kids from Hawai‘i who aspire to follow in his footsteps, he says: "One piece of advice would be just to not worry about what others are doing. I think a lot of people get wrapped up in a bunch of nonsense. It's not about this, that or the other thing. I look like your average person. It's more about consistency every day, and not looking too far ahead. I never thought that I would end up here at the end of the day. That was not in my head.

"And don't focus on others. Just focus on you. Focus on things that you can get better at and just develop from there."

With only 20 rounds in the MLB Draft, Quinn has accepted that his pro prospects are thin. He has given thought to life after baseball. 

"For me personally, I'm not expecting to get my name called by any means," he said. "If opportunity arrives, I would love to take it, but as of right now, I'm just going to go through the entrepreneur route. I don't know what it is yet, not really sure either.

"If (pro baseball) doesn't happen, I'm not losing any sleep over it. I've had a great career. I've got two extra years thanks to COVID. It's been an unbelievable experience. I'm just very thankful for my opportunities that I've gotten, the people I've met, some of the lifelong friends baseball brought  to my life."

Without his father's encouragement, Quinn says his college experience would've been spent "as a frat guy, that's for sure." 

After six more years of baseball, Quinn's next beach outing won't be spent wondering what could have been on the diamond. 

"A lot of luck was definitely involved but, hey, I'm glad I did it," he said. "It's been an awesome journey."

i’s Poke Fest, and it’s celebrating the grand opening of its new Kapahulu location tomorrow. You can find the business, called HanaPa’a 2, inside Hawai

HanaPa’a Market originally opened in Hawai‘i Kai about three years ago, and it’s been open for three weeks in its new Kapahulu store, according to business owner Michael Leslie. The biz is known for its poke, which features your choice of protein — ‘ahi, salmon, shrimp, tako or tofu — and style (Hawaiian, sweet ginger shoyu, spicy ‘ahi, miso or oyster ginger scallion).

“Our recipes are unique; we mix it (our poke) to order,” he says. “We don’t mix anything ahead of time.”

Poke bowls come with your choice of poke and white, brown or sushi rice; customers can also opt for half salad and half rice for $1 more. The spicy mayo is the most popular poke style, according to Leslie.

“At the store in Hawai‘i Kai, we do about eight gallons of spicy mayo a week,” he says. “Everybody eats spicy mayo. Our Hawaiian style is probably right (up there) next to that. Garlic shoyu is something that we do well; that’s pretty popular. If you like spicy, garlic chili crunch is the way to go. It all depends on what your preference is.”

All poke bowls come with cucumber wakame salad and pickled takuan that’s made in house. You can take your poke bowl to the next level with toppings like tempura puffs and bubu arare ($1 more).

The menu at the Kapahulu store is mostly the same as the one at the business’s Hawai‘i Kai location, according to Leslie.

“In Hawai‘i Kai, we were (selling) 95% poke bowls, but then we started adding the plate lunches,” he says.

“Hawai‘i Kai is really set in the menu; it’s not changing,” Leslie says. “Here, there might be a heavier influence of local food like pastele stew, beef luau and lau lau. There’s only one bento there; we have three here.”

The business’s ‘ahi fever plate ($22) is one of the most popular options, according to Leslie.

The plate includes spicy mayo poke, seared furikake ‘ahi, a kimchi ‘ahi patty, rice, greens, mac salad and pickled vegetables. The spicy ‘ahi poke is flavorful — the right amount of kick, and not too strong on the mayo — and the creamy texture is a nice contrast to the seared ‘ahi and cooked patty.

It’s easy to be overwhelmed by the selection of bentos and plates — just because all the combos sound delicious. Bentos include popular selections like the Kanak ($18) — kalua pork, Hawaiian-style ‘ahi poke, poi, lomi tomato, and chili pepper water — and the Shacho ($18). The latter is a customer favorite, and is a mix of misoyaki salmon, shoyu pork belly, shrimp tempura and yuzu tartar sauce.

“I named it (the Shacho) after our landlord,” Leslie says. “It’s a long story; I’ve known him for years.”

Meanwhile, the plate lunch selection includes options like garlic parmesan crusted ‘ahi ($22), shoyu braised pork belly ($20).

HanaPa’a is celebrating the grand opening of the Kapahulu store tomorrow, May 24 from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Customers can look forward to giveaways and prizes, according to Leslie.
