The Moanalua High School girls wrestling team has won five state titles in a row. That is the sort of sentence that usually ends a story. This week it begins one.

Sean Sakaida coached that team through four of those titles. He is

, accused of producing child pornography with one of his wrestlers. Court records say he began dating the girl when she was in ninth grade.

Within a day of the FBI posting a tip form, two more possible victims came forward.

The morning after Sakaida’s arrest, the mother of his three children walked into Family Court with a handwritten petition for a protective order. She alleged that he abused her children, and she asked the court to keep him away for 20 years.

The courts have not yet ruled. But the public record is already heavy enough to ask: How did he get here?

The wrestlers were children. Their parents signed the permission slips and drove them to practice and trusted a man — and the school that hired him — to help form their daughters.

That formation is what a coach is for. A parent lends a child to a coach for a few hours a day so the child can learn to work hard, compete well, and get up off the mat.

Sakaida, by his own account, made himself available at all hours. In 2012, at Roosevelt High School, a parent accused him of kissing a 13-year-old wrestler and texting other girls as late as 3 a.m. He denied the kiss. He did not deny the texts. He told the Star-Advertiser he was only helping students with their problems, and that former students still called him “because he was always available.”

Every parent should hear alarm bells in that sentence. A 30-year-old man texting other people’s teenage daughters at 3 a.m. is not “available.” He is a threat. Teens have problems, and they should carry those problems to their parents. A coach who becomes the person they carry them to instead has not added something to a family. He has taken something from it. The best-friend coach is a type we have learned to admire. It is a type we should learn to resist.

The Department of Education investigated in 2012. But it never called the police. Sakaida was placed on leave. The next year Moanalua hired him. Moanalua’s athletic director has

whether the school knew about the 2012 allegations.

, and anyone with a search engine could have found it in under a minute. If Moanalua knew, that is one kind of trouble. If Moanalua did not check, that is another.

Then Sakaida won: First a few individual champions, then four state titles in a row. In 2025 the school received a complaint that he was in a relationship with a 17-year-old wrestler. The school investigated. Again, no one called the police.

Sakaida was placed on leave, his contract lapsed, and his name went into a confidential registry. According to federal prosecutors, the relationship continued for months afterward. It took a private citizen tipping the FBI in January to bring in anyone with a badge.

Wrestling is a fine sport. It builds tough, hard-working people, because the mat does not lie. It teaches responsibility, because a wrestler who loses cannot blame a teammate.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to win, and nothing wrong with winning. But the desire to win is like fire: useful in the hearth, ruinous in the curtains.

We know what that desire looks like when it gets loose. Students who live in the weight room and skip the classroom. Teenagers taking steroids to gain an edge. Schools that hire a coach with a complaint already on file because his teams bring home hardware.

The desire to win at any cost is idolatry, pure and simple, and idols always want to be fed. In this case, it appears, girls were the offering.

Here is what happens next if nothing changes. The victims will rightly sue. The DOE will settle out of court to avoid the headlines. The settlement will be sealed, and the public will pay the bill without ever learning who knew what. Records requests will die under “pending litigation.” The criminal trial will produce details, and we will consume them the way we consume cold-case podcasts, and then we will forget.

We should not. Every detail that emerges should be read as a specification for reform. A school is not a police department. When a complaint involves a possible sex crime against a child, the school’s first call should be to the people whose job is investigating crimes.

That is already the law. Hawaiʻi makes every school employee a mandated reporter, required to report suspected abuse immediately to Child Welfare Services or the police. It’s not clear that the schools did. The Legislature should ask why, in public, before the settlements seal the answer.

A coaching hire should require a check of past complaints across the whole system, not just a clean criminal record. Parents should ask who is texting their daughter at midnight, and a coach should be dismissed if the answer is him.

Moanalua has a case filled with trophies. At what cost?

Craig Stutzmann was born in Hilo, but O‘ahu is where his family planted their roots.

The Stutzmann family moved to Varsity Circle when Craig Stutzmann was a year old. The University of Hawai‘i's lower campus just a few hundred feet away became young Craig's sanctuary.

Cooke Field is where he learned how to throw a football. He'd swim at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex. He'd play catch at Rainbow Stadium with his cousins. The pond near the football team's grass practice fields is where his grandfather taught him how to fish.

"I grew up in Varsity Circle," Stutzmann said in a Monday morning Zoom call. "That lower campus was like my playground."

After a standout prep football career at Saint Louis, Stutzmann chose to play for his childhood team despite interest from half a dozen Mainland schools. A three-year starter at slot receiver, his final play as a Warrior was a touchdown reception in a 72-45 blowout of rival BYU to end the 2001 season. Stuzmann punted the ball into the crowd out of celebration and was ejected, a decision he still has no regrets about 25 years later.

Following a brief stint with the CFL's BC Lions, Sutzmann began his coaching career, which has included nine college teams in the past 17 years. The 2014 season was the first time he was named an offensive coordinator at the collegiate level at Division III Emory & Henry, which ran Stutzmann's Spread & Shred offense.

Since then, Stutzmann has been viewed as one of the offensive masterminds at each school he's coached for, which included a stint at his alma mater from 2016 to 2019. After former head coach Nick Rolovich departed for Washington State, Stutzmann was passed over for the head coaching job by former UH athletics director David Matlin in favor of Todd Graham. Stutzmann followed Rolovich to Pullman, and both were removed from their roles in 2021 after not complying with the state's vaccine mandate.

landed the San Jose State job in 2024 and knew exactly who he wanted to run the team's offense, offering Stutzmann the offensive coordinator job. The Spartans and Rainbow Warriors did not play each other in 2024, but when Stutzmann got the opportunity to coach against his alma mater for the first time on Nov. 1, 2025, he called the plays as the Spartans gashed UH for 630 yards in a 45-38 victory.

Things have changed around Mānoa since Stutzmann's hanabata days. Rainbow Stadium was renamed Les Murakami Stadium in 2001. And Cooke Field is now known as the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex, UH football's temporary location for home games since 2021 as the

. Niumatalolo and Stutzmann both coached the Spartans in Mānoa in the 2024 Hawai‘i Bowl, but that contest was against the University of South Florida.

For Stutzmann, the opportunity to coach against Hawai‘i in Hawai‘i will finally come on Saturday, Oct. 3, when the Spartans and Rainbow Warriors will battle for the Dick Tomey Legacy Trophy at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex at 6 p..m. The opportunity for Stutzmann to coach against the 'Bows in his old stomping grounds promises to bring a new set of emotions.

"I can't wait to play on Saturday against the University of Hawai‘i," Stutzmann said, "It's going to be surreal. It's going to be fun. It's going to be a whole lot of different emotions, but we're going to put on a good show."

Stutzmann, of course, is far from the only Hawai‘i connection in San Jose State's football program. It starts at the top with the team's head coach in Niumatalolo, a UH alumnus who owns a house in Mānoa. When the Spartans were idle last weekend, Niumatalolo was on Island to celebrate his granddaughter's birthday. Does he have a favorite spot to hit when he's back home?

"My problem is I have too many of them," Niumatalolo said. "That's why I always gain weight when I come home."

San Jose State's roster features multiple Hawai‘i high school graduates in slot receiver Tama Amisone (Kapolei), linebacker Aizik Mahuka (Mililani), safety Tuli Tagovailoa-Amosa (Kahuku), tight end Kama

(Campbell) and offensive lineman Kamuela Wilhelm (Punahou). Additionally, the coaching staff includes Hawai‘i alums in tight ends coach Kolney Cassel, defensive pass game coordinator/cornerbacks coach Brian Norwood and receivers coach/passing game coordinator Billy Ray Stutzmann, Craig's younger brother. Additionally, offensive line coach Ramsen Golpashin coached UH's offensive line in 2015.

Despite all the Hawai‘i ties, no name will ring a bell to UH football fans more than San Jose State starting quarterback

. As Hawai‘i's backup in 2025, he went 2-0 as a starter and delivered the winning touchdown throw in UH's

thrilling Hawai‘i Bowl victory over Cal

Weaver's heroics instantly caught the eye of SJSU's coaches, who were in the market for a new quarterback after Walker Eget departed for Duke. Once Weaver entered the transfer portal seeking more playing time, the Spartans moved quickly to gain his commitment.

The Spartans are 2-2 heading into Saturday's matchup, their most recent game a 26-10 loss to Fresno State on Sept. 19. Weaver threw an uncharacteristic four interceptions; the most he had previously thrown in a game at the FBS level was two. Niumatalolo believes Weaver, who had nothing ill to say about Hawai‘i on his way out, is more motivated by wanting to bounce back rather than earning a victory against his former team.

"Luke had played really well the first three games. I mean, Luke was good as anybody. Fresno wasn't one of his better games. I know he wants to bounce back, and so I know that's a big priority for him," Niumatalolo said. "And I know he will. I have all the faith and confidence in him. Luke hasn't had anything bad to say about Timmy (Chang), the coaching staff, just everybody there.

"He loved his time there, and it was a great experience. He wanted a chance to play, and that's why he's here. Just had great things to say. But I haven't sensed the motivation to beat Hawai‘i. I think more than anything, I think he wants to bounce back because, like I said, he's been playing really good and two weeks ago, kind of stumbled. I know he wants to get back on track."

Meanwhile, the Hawai‘i team the Spartans are facing on Saturday will be desperate after a 1-3 start, its most recent outing a

. Stutzmann is wary of UH's desperation and is challenging his team to surpass it.

"The Hawai‘i defense, they play hard. Coach (

) does a really good job there, and I think they play hard. They're physical. They fly around, play with their hair on fire, and so we got to make sure that we're ready to go off the bat and not just meet the same intensity, but we got to exceed it," Stutzmann said. "We got to play harder than those guys. We got to play clean. But I think overall, there's a lot of different things that they do. A lot of different fronts. A lot of different pressure packages. They try to confuse the line. They try to confuse the quarterback. We got to be good with our eyes, and then when it's all said and done, just play harder than they do."

With the advantage of a bye week prior to Saturday's matchup, Stutzmann says a lot of his recent time went toward the team's upcoming contests at Hawai‘i and against Wyoming on Oct. 9.

"I would say probably about 10 to 15% of that was was making sure that we clean up the self-inflicted wounds, but about 85 to maybe 80% of that was getting ready for the University of Hawai‘i and also getting ready a little bit for Wyoming because we play Wyoming on a short week when we get back from Hawai‘i," Stutzmann said. "Getting a head start on Wyoming was a little bit, maybe another 10%. So, I know that adds up to more than 100%, but I went to Saint Louis, so my math isn't the greatest."

A 24-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with last weekend’s fatal shooting in Kailua.

The Honolulu Police Department announced late Monday that homicide detectives identified a suspect who was arrested for second-degree murder and firearm offenses just before 11 p.m. Monday night. HPD arrest logs

 Hilinaikailimakualopali Keeno as the suspect.

Keeno’s was possible through the assistance of the HPD’s Criminal Investigation Division’s Forensic Video Unit. HPD had previously requested that members of the public submit photos or videos of the Kailua Fall Festival, which was ongoing at the time of the shooting, that could help identify the suspect, who at the time was described as “a local male in his late 20s.”

HPD’s announcement also identified the victim: 30-year-old Thomas Malone, the son of Michael Buntenbah, who owns the

Friends and family of Malone gathered at the Kailua Target parking lot Tuesday to commemorate him with flowers, candles and memorabilia. Also in attendance were Malone’s old soccer coach and former teammates.

Malone their Offensive Player of the Year for the 2013 football season, saying that Malone — then a senior going by the name Buntenbah-Leong — accumulated 149 points over 12 games.

Aloha State Daily's Christian Shimabuku and Kelsey Kukaua Medeiros contributed to this article.

The Honolulu Police Department is seeking photos and videos of the Kailua Fall Festival that can shed light on the shooting death of a 30-year-old man.

On Sept. 26, shortly after 8:30 p.m., a gunshot was reported in the parking lot of the Target in Kailua, where a 30-year-old man was found with a fatal gunshot wound and was declared dead at the scene.

Initial investigations by HPD determined that two groups of people got into an argument at the Kailua Fall Festival, which was adjacent to the parking lot. That argument spilled into the lot, where somebody pulled out a gun and shot the victim.

The shooter, however, was unidentified beyond the description: “a local male in his late 20s, wearing a black sweater and his hair in two braids.”

HPD has initiated a murder investigation and has received surveillance footage and other pictures from the festival. However, detectives are requesting additional photos from the event that could help identify the shooter. Even photos that don’t explicitly show the shooting can still contain relevant information, HPD has stated.

People with information or recordings regarding the incident are asked to call 911 or CrimeStoppers at 808-955-8300.

[{"type":"text","text":"The Kula Hospital on Maui will reopen, announced Gov. Josh Green Tuesday."}]

The historic Kula Hospital was closed indefinitely in March after sustaining extensive damage during the Kona Low storms. At the time, it was unclear if the 116-year-old building could be reopened, as stormwater intrusion was evident throughout the facility.

But on Tuesday, Green announced that the state and Kaiser Permanente will commit more than $60 million to reopen the hospital.

Hawai‘i will contribute $42 million, with Kaiser investing another $23 million, although Green’s office noted that the actual project costs might change as the plans take shape.

“Restoring Kula Hospital is essential to protecting access to emergency, inpatient and long-term care for Upcountry Maui,” said Ed Chu, President and CEO of Hawai‘i Health Systems Corp.. “This investment will rebuild a stronger, more resilient facility … while helping Maui’s health care system withstand future emergencies.”

The project will replace the hospital’s exterior windows and doors with custom weather-protective units that will better shield the facility from future weather events. Furthermore, interior spaces and systems will be repaired and modernized.

However, a time frame for the project has not yet been determined, as the planning process is still underway.

In the meantime, the closure of Kula Hospital has left a gap in Maui’s emergency health coverage. The next nearest emergency room is at Maui Memorial Medical Center, about 22 miles away.

Residents at the Hale Makamae facility — an intermediate care ward for developmentally disabled patients that was also damaged during the Kona Lows — have been relocated to the Maui Memorial Center. The planned repairs to the hospital will also include repairs to Hale Makamae, and the patients will be able to return to the facility when the project is complete.

In the meantime, Kula Clinic remains open as an option for Upcountry residents.

is almost one year old; the business opened on Aug. 8, 2025, in the former Ba-le space, next to the Don Quijote Pearl City food court.

According to business owner Nathan Wu, the cafe's name is inspired by his family.

“It stands for Nathan, Ava, Katy and Sheldon,” Wu says. “Ava is my daughter and Sheldon is my younger son.”

Wu has worked in the restaurant industry for the past 25 years; his previous culinary experience includes roles at Hau Tree

when the property was still called The New Otani Kaimana Beach Hotel

“The chef (from Le Bistro) was really talented,” Wu says. “I learned a lot from him; I got a lot of inspiration from him. I was there (at Le Bistro) for around 10 years.”

Wu always wanted to open his own restaurant; he currently operates Mezzo Bistro & Bar, which is in Market City Shopping Center.

“That restaurant is American-Italian fusion,” he says. “It’s been open for five years.”

He wasn’t necessarily looking to open a new concept in Pearl City, but once he learned about the space, he thought it was a good fit.

“In Hawaiʻi, everybody is so busy,” Wu says. “After work, maybe people just want to go home and enjoy a good meal. I wanted to have upscale takeout for busy people; they can still get takeout with restaurant-quality food.”

Wu describes Naks Cafe's cuisine as “international fusion.” He says many of the featured dishes are personal favorites.

“I’ve been putting more wagyu items on the menu,” he says. “We have a supplier directly from Japan, we are getting A5 Toriyama wagyu directly from their farm. We are trying to introduce more wagyu items to the Pearl City area.”

When Naks Cafe first opened, the biz only had ramen on the menu. Now, the menu offers a variety of sandwiches, pastas, wagyu dishes and specials.

“We now have the wagyu beef burger, wagyu loco moco and wagyu beef curry,” Wu says. “I’m thinking we’ll have more wagyu items in the future.”

The wagyu beef burger ($18.85) is one of the most popular dishes. It features a wagyu beef patty with caramelized onions, cheese, arugula and wasabi aioli. The burger comes with fries and mixed greens.

“The salad comes with our housemade dressing, which is a raspberry vinaigrette,” Wu says.

The cafe also offers specials like the Cajun shrimp plate ($17.85) and barbecue chicken and shrimp mix plate ($19.85). The Cajun shrimp plate comes with fresh greens and rice; the shrimp boasts a slight spice.

The fettuccine al funghi ($16.85) and The Naks ($16.85) — which is a bite-sized French toast — are also customer favorites, according to Wu. The latter features crispy, deep-fried French toast bites, tossed in cinnamon sugar and served with a housemade cream cheese whip.

“Kids love it; our homemade cream cheese whip is really good,” Wu says.

Customers can also choose from drinks like Oreo milk with Nutella cloud ($6.85), and mango or strawberry matcha lattes ($6.85). While most customers order their meals to-go, they can also enjoy their meals in the adjacent food court area, which offers seating.

Naks Cafe is celebrating its first anniversary this Saturday, Aug. 8. The biz will be offering a 16% discount on food, along with a buy-one-get-one-free special for drinks.

“We’re offering 16% percent off because Aug. 8 is like 8 plus 8,” Wu says. “We want to make it memorable.”

Open from 11 am. to 7 p.m. Sundays to Thursdays; 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays

Hawaiian Electric customers be warned — higher bills are headed your way.

The utility this week said it anticipates that typical residential bills may rise between 20% and 30% in the coming months. The increases are driven by rising global oil prices linked to "escalating geopolitical tensions," including the current conflict in Iran, an

"As an island state that relies heavily on imported fuel for electricity generation and transportation, Hawai‘i is particularly sensitive to global fossil fuel price fluctuations," HECO says. "These increases will affect electric bills, fuel prices and other commodities."

Customers on O‘ahu will begin seeing higher bills in April, while Hawai‘i Island and Maui County customers will see increases in May and June, the announcement noted.

The formula for rates is regulated by the Public Utilities Commission, and "includes fuel costs that fluctuate with world markets," according to the utility, which also notes that it makes no profit on the fuel used to generate electricity.

A HECO spokesperson told Aloha State Daily that increases for commercial customers are expected to be in the same ballpark as residential customers.

"Retailers operate on very thin margins, so rising energy costs remain a key concern," Dave Erdman, interim president and CEO of Retail Merchants of Hawai‘i, told Aloha State Daily in an email. "Our members are sharing practical suggestions to reduce in-store energy use and manage higher electric bills, such as using LED lighting, adjusting air-conditioning settings, turning off lights when not in use, and maintaining refrigeration and air filters for efficiency.

"We will continue to monitor the situation, and gain and share feedback from members on impacts to their retail businesses, shopping centers/malls, dining establishments [and] our allied businesses in professional services and logistics," he continued.
