I was on an airplane flying into the Big Island and the way the light streamed across the water and drew a line across the clouds with the darkened sky above, was striking!!!

My wife and I were on Maui for our annual vacation and the property (Westin Ocean Resort Villas) we were staying at had an outrigger canoe company on site. As we were getting ready for the paddle to begin the double rainbow appeared. I told my wife this was an excellent sign and we ended up with an up close and personal whale encounter about half way into our paddle session. Great day on the ocean and brought back fond memories of being in a canoe. I used to live on Oahu and paddled on a team for about 10 years.

This photo was taken from the ocean side of the Ala Wai Canal on Oct. 19, 2025, at 4:45 p.m. I found it striking because the rainbow's perfect emergence from the cloud line beautifully illustrates atmospheric moisture in action.

I liked the purple and orange colors, with the small clouds in the foreground giving it a feeling of depth. It made me feel energetic and hopeful for the beginning of a new day. I think this photo is special because of its color and complexity.

The clouds were so vibrant that I stopped in my tracks and snapped a ridiculous amount of photos of them. I also loved the silhouetted palm trees. I felt grateful to live in a place where you get to experience lovely views like that on a regular basis.

The sunsets at Kona are legendary of course, and this particular evening was spectacular after a day of golf, yard work and grilling out. We lost our Florida home back in 2004 to Hurricane Ivan, and we moved to Kona in 2007. We are so blessed to have found our piece of paradise here and every Kona sunset reminds us how fortunate we are to be living in Hawaiʻi. We live with our beloved dogs and cat, our stairway to heaven.

I was enjoying a lovely evening at Waimea Bay with my husband and our puppy, and I had to snap a photo of this gorgeous sunset! I had been watching our puppy race across the sand and we we were completely in the moment. As a weeknight after a full day of work, being able to end the evening at Waimea Bay was a reminder of how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful place.

We were out sailing with some friends. … Everyone was wearing polarized sunglasses so it took a while for us to even notice and then suddenly as soon as we took off, the glasses were amazed at the complete rainbow and it’s brightness. It stayed across the city like that for a very long time and it was just the perfect Hawaiʻi rainbow and afternoon sailing.

We are so blessed to live in Hawaiʻi and sometimes we just need to take time to enjoy it. When asked what restaurant I want to go to celebrate Mother’s Day, I responded with a simple picnic at the beach watching the sunset. It was so beautiful and relaxing!
